[Q] ADW Theming help! - Droid X Themes and Apps

So, I've started making an ADW theme - and I have NO idea how these things work. There seems to be no documentation anywhere, and the template apk doesnt have the stock images that base theme has. Is there any thread that can at least get me started with making a custom dock background theme, or does anyone know where to start?
Thanks,
-Dave

I love ADW, but customizing the dock is a pain in the ass compared to other launchers. I'm currently using ADW with no dock background image, and some custom icons from the TallMin icon set.
I spent some time trying to theme the dock, and was able to do some image replacement via Metamorph/Ninjamorph or by ADB pulling the ADW APK, replacing images and ADB pushing it back. Using this method, I was able to replace the left, right and center icon backgrounds. Unfortunately, this is when I discovered that the stock theme uses the same center icon background for the three center icons.
This left me with a dock backgrounds like this: LEFT CENTER CENTER CENTER RIGHT
Close, but not what I wanted. I eventually gave up, after deciding I was spending far too much time messing with it. Your best bet will be to find an ADW theme, and modify the dock backgrounds via Meta/Ninjamorph or editing the ADW apk.
BUT
If you are feeling adventurous, here is the complete ADW guide. The link will take you right to the Theming section.
http://code.google.com/p/adw-launch...ToADW#Chapter_3_-_ADW.Launcher_Theme_Creation
You will be installing and using the Android SDK, Java JDK, editing XML, and creating signed packages. Good luck! It was far more than I wanted to get into, personally.

Thanks a ton - Thats exactly what I was looking for. I'm fine with eclipse and all that, I just got the template and had NO documentation for it. Should Pump out a theme sometime soon

So when we get 2.1 .. Will we have Motorola Droid icons?

Or are those icons exclusive to the device?
I know I can change the look of shortcuts on the home screen, but I think the application icons (when you pull up the application list) are just so incoherent like designed by many different developers ... I prefer the way the icons look on the droid.
Is there a way to change them without open home? Or will 2.1 change the look of the icons?
2.1 for the Hero will probably have HTC or Android specific icons.
Well that blows, every time I pull up my application menu ... I cringe from the incoherency of the icons ... Some are flat, some a pseudo-3D, some go for that angled look.
They're not easy on the eyes. I've looked passed it of course but if there's a way to get a coherent batch of application icons (not shortcuts) without using open home or some 3rd party application, I would appreciate it if I could be told how.
While on the subject ... So it's Motorola that is responsible for that beautiful set of icons on the droid? I thought those icons came with 2.0.

An application's icon is set by a png inside of the apk itself. Just like an icon on a program on your computer. Microsoft doesn't make those icons, the software maker does. So HTC's icons will look different from Sprint which look different from stock Android which look different from Jim Bob's Tractor App. If it makes you cringe then you could remake all the icons.

I see.
So the Droid has a coherent set of stock icons because neither Motorola nor Verizon decided to make any proprietary apps for the phone. Those are all Android applications?
As for remaking the icons ... Surely that's beyond my experience, but is it something that is technically possible? You know, just replacing the png file in the apk?

flashable clear taskbar

Stock clear taskbar by Rujelus on first page. If you are themed this will revert lockscreen, notification window etc
--
Hi, I was wondering if anyone can make a flashable clear/100% transparent taskbar and clear/100% transparent sense bottom bar launcher.
Ideally, the bottom bar launcher would be something like
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=385691&d=1282488980
in burst's plurstaralpha theme, which is transparent but with visible interactive buttons
The taskbar would be similar to riptide's current
http://www.johnwishon.com/themes/riptide9.png
In similar threads i've seen at least half a dozen people ask for these things, so i wouldn't be alone in using these.
Anyone who can help, it would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

I've been wanting JUST a clear taskbar for a while now. I don't want 4 million changes in a theme package, it's always one or two things I want. Wish they'd do a lot more splitting up of the mods so you can pick and choose what all you want.
I really want the clear bottom bar launcher. And the 3d app drawer.
What would it take to get all the devs together to create a Theme Kitchen?
Or maybe just the top 5 devs or something. Because there are some really nice themes out there, and like jlechner says, the ability to pick and choose parts out of themes would be really nice.

you can get that stuff using launcher pro. but you want to keep the htc sense also right?
pretty sure konikub made one, as I have flashed it. I dont know if I have the zip but im pretty sure if you searched konikubs posts you will find what you are looking for. Here is his 2.2 theme post, not sure if its in here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=746689
EDIT: I have something called DC-FRESH_AloysiusClearTaskbar-signed, search the forum for it if that is what you are looking for
Here you go, this is completely stock except the two things that you wanted. As far as making a kitchen, I have no clue on that.
RUJELUS22_Clear.zip
How do I remove this? I flashed it and it looks horrible. It's messed up when I swype down to see my notifications. I'm using Fresh 3.1.0.1

Reapply whatever previous theme you had to replace the framework-res package that made these changes i think.
It looks good, and I do appreciate the work you put into this Rujelus, thank you
unfortunately, since I had manup's theming, it reverted my clear lockscreen, clear notification bar, clear calendar widget back to stock and left black bordering around some of the smooth revolution battery, signal etc icons.
I thought framework theming was seperate lines that were added/removed but looks like its more complicated than i thought : /

Like I said this is completely default except the 2 edits. These edits are just pictures inside framework-res and com.htc.resources there is no way that I know of to add something like this to the theme you already using unless you do the edits to the files that you are using right now. When you do an update.zip it will replace the whole file not just the edited parts.
Oh : (
Thank you for your efforts

[MOD][HOW TO] Transparent notification bar.

In this thread ill show you how to make that notification bar transparent.
1. take the png's ive attached to this post and place them on your SD card in the folder entitled "android themes"
take note of these file names.
2.open ninjamorph select new project
navigate through: system/framework/framework-res.apk. it will then extract all the files.
then navigate through res/drawable-hdpi.
scroll down to "status_bar_background.png" click it and change it out with the "status_bar_background.png" you placed on your SD card that has the exact same file name....then continue to replace the other 6 png's the same way.
If one of the existing png's in your framework does not match the one Ive provided (for example the existing file on your phone ends in " .9 " ) then rename it to match...not all themes are exactly the same.
3. when your done replacing all 7 png's press the blue back button in ninjamorph, select finish project, select the one that says "framework-resapk"
then just keep clicking "yes" ("yes/yes/ok/yes") then ninjamorph will tell you "ALL DONE!" and your phone will automatically reboot.
this will work fine with "launcher 2" and will most likley work with whatever default launcher that came with whatever ROM you mught be using. BUT...
...!!! when using this mod with ADW launcher, launcher pro
or any home replacement app you will need to use a live wallpaper (I use "shake em all" and then just set my own wallpaper) if you want the notification bar to stay transparent. the pulldown will allways be transparent though. (you can also use a live wallpaper called "multiple wallpapers" )

Do you have to root? Stock launchers work? Very nice work.

it does look good.
Will this work with gummyjar 2.5?
Root is required to run ninjamorph. This will work on any ROM. Be sure to put pngs in Android Theme folder (imperative). Works best with stock launchers.
update: tried my LWP again and this time it worked. will update after a few re-boots if it changes back to black, but otherwise it worked this time.
been trying to get this to work but the best I can get is my lock screen to work, but when I unlock to any other home screen or if I go to my app drawer, just a black status bar.
I am running Apex 1.3.1, and additionally have changed out my status bar icons. so not sure if that has anything to do with it, does anyone have any thought on that?
thanks for any thoughts/responses.

ps. a lot of my .png's in framwork-res.apk are 9.png's if that matters, and to get to at least where I am (running and clear status bar in lock screen only) I have replaced those with the new ones. When I finish the project in ninja and reboot, it force closes once, I pull the battery and it reboots. Like I say, after that I reboot after the fc and it loads without an error, but does not give me a full transparent status bar.
thanks again for looking and any help.

I was able to navigate to the folder irregardless of location. Metamorph forces you to use Android Theme folder.
I was able to get this to work but as stated in op you must have a lwp for it to work. I thought this would be acceptable but can't find a lwp that doesn't suck battery, and look decent. I purchased the light grid pro and am ok with it. Shakem up wouldnt display my wallpapers right.
Is there no way to get it to work with a static wallpaper? And in the browser its white. Though it could be transparent and white behind it.
Edit: the browser notification bar is white. Where to change? Is possible?

UPDATED.....
some people brought to my attention that, on other themes, some of the png's end in " .9 " so if you run in to a png on your existing framework that does not match the one ive attched to the OP just rename it to match (usually you will just need to add/remove " .9 ")
so i updated the attached files and added a read me to both zips.
Enjoy!

I'm aware of the "grayish white" when in certain apps....to tell you the truth I havent even tried to fix it. sounds like a good thing to try out right now.
shake em all loads my wallpapers just fine.....hmmm,,,you can try "multiple wallpapers"...and see if you like that..i was thinking about making my own live wallpaper that is just blank as can be and doesnt use up memory/battery..and you bet ill post it up in here if i can ever get that accomplished.

you need to rename the png's i provided to match your " .9 " png's..
if you didnt do this im willing to bet thats why ninjamorph force closed and your having issues....try renaming them and going back through to replace.
btw i updated the attached files in the OP.
there are now 2 versions and i added more png's
if you cant remember wich ones were " .9 " then.....
go into...sdcard/android themes/backup/ and youll see a backup of your framework, you can load this backup and start over if necessary.
This will only work on stock launcher and launcher2 with static wallpaper. It seems others have had success using Zeam launcher as well.
I have launcher pro. I've tried both live wallpapers...no success.
How do I change the notifications text to white? I am using a black/glass status bar background and the text isn't readable (black on black)
Hey,
But can you back up it with out the back up of the rom?
I meant if i want to reverse it - can i reverse only what i have done and not to restore the whole ROM?
so ive attempted to do this exactly as your instructions show something like 6 times... nothing is working for me except the transparent drop down menu. also, ive noticed in my /drawable-hdpi folder, i dont have a status_bar_close_on.png to replace your image with in the first place. im running 2.3.3 and im not running a downloaded rom or anything ( i think?) im still using stock everything as far as theming goes.
help!?!??!?!

[Q] Ugly folder icons

How can I change the ugly folder icons on my phone. I'm using ADW and when I long click on my home...custom shortcut....there's no option for replacing folder icons, only apps, shortcuts, and widgets. I'd rather not download another app (like app organizer), is their a simple work-a-round?.....Waited till I was out of warranty before rooting, so I'm new to the whole custom rom / theming thing.
You can get an ADW theme on the market for free, lots of colors, lots of icons, lots of folders. You just DL the pack, and you can either apply the theme which will automatically change your icons and folders in most cases, OR you can not apply the theme and choose a custom icon from the adw theme icon pack. Also, there are free icon packs all over xda, my favorite thread is the "icon collection - more than 425 icon packs". Search away.
You could try Desktop Visualizer from the Market...that would do what you want but obviously it would be another app.
Just long press your folder icon, tap the pic in the corner, and select a different one. Either from an icon pack from the market, or from your gallery.

Sent from my CDMA Hero. I got some hot Ginger-on-Hero action here!
Using that adw method, I like to change them to no icon at all. Invisible "hot spots" instead of icon clutter.
Sent phrom my fone.
Thanks for all of the help!!! I've been reading threads like crazy for the past month, playing with different themes and even making some of my own icons. I never got this involved in my phone before, but thanks to Sprint's new upgrade policies I've get several more months left with this phone to explore the possibilities. LOL

[Theme] Update:02/07/11 Dot-Matrix v2.0 Go-Launcher EX Theme

So this is my first theme Ive ever done. It took the better part of today and wasnt too difficult. I used the Go Launcher Theme Factory to build it. The home screen icons are custom made in either Illustrator or Photoshop. As Im not yet experienced with button layouts and styles, I would really love some feedback on what you think works and what doesnt.
I was really inspired by the Miui widget styles with the dot-matrix look. I havent paid for my dev account with Google Market yet, so please download this theme here. And thanks for all the critiques and what-not!
Update: 2/7/11 Ok so another update here. I added a few more icons for some commonly used apps. Only 7 of them. They are all 72x72 so they should match up with the background ok. Probably not exact but they should work.
Also the dock apps actually have 'twin' app icons in the app drawer that use the stock image. So these icons in the app drawer have the 'common' background image applied to them (blue square). you can replace the dock version icons for these default ones if you like them better. I placed them above the counterparts in the pics below. Other than this I also changed the app drawer tab look to the dot matrix style. makes things a little more cohesive.
I have also included a .zip file with all the dock icons in 60x60 format for you to put on your device and change manually. Just in case the apk leaves them out for some reason. When you change them manually they also tend to be just a little more crisp.
Hope you guys enjoy.
EDIT: I just noticed the app drawer tab icons are getting shrunk by go launcher so they dont match the background. Too tired to change them now. Maybe tomorrow, so.....late......zzzzzz

I was really inspired by the Miui widget styles with the dot-matrix look. However Im having the hardest time to get them to look uniform and not do that weird jumping around thing that small dots tend to do with aliasing and such. Do you think it may have something to do with me designing the icons small rather than starting big and shrinking them?

If you're using photoshop just set the DPI so that 1px = 1 dot. Then just set the canvas size to whatever the icon size is and you can "paint" in each pixel.
Just a thought..

Actually I was planning on giving this one away on the market for free since it is my first attempt. Im gettin the hang of the theme factory a bit now. It can be really confusing to replace some of the images properly. And with no Manual on how to use the dang thing, its all guess work.

Thanks, I was trying to use Illustrator with artboards that were the exacct size of the icons, but i think i was setting the dpi wrong because they would come out bigger. I guess ill stick to photoshop for my next ones. Wondering if icons are usually painted large then shrunk down?

I'm digging this theme. The ICS blue layout, the simple minimalist look is how I like my themes. Unfortunately, the dock icons look a little odd to me. Though I'd gladly use this if you kept improving on this theme.

That is exactly what i plan to do. I figured out my problem with the dock icon resolution problem too. Go Launcher shrinks the normal icon image from 72x72 down to 60x60 when you place the icon on the dock. I was making the dock icons at a resolution of 72x72. This is why the dots would look weird when they were put there. So im going to try and fix that by creating a template for myself. I will upload it onto a new thread with pixel guides for the various icon sizes and a psd file for people to create their own icons with. After doing all the pixel math I was able to layout all the guides for the home screen grid according to a 5x6 pattern.

Thanks for the explanations. I ended up trying this out on my mom's Fire last night and it looked awesome.
I then went ahead and loaded it up onto my Infuse and I'm definitely liking this theme more. I love the folder icons on this theme especially.
One of the things I noticed is that there was an icon pack when I installed it on the fire (one of them was the facebook icon which had some subtle snowflakes on them) and it doesn't show up on my Infuse (just the standard blue border) and when trying to pick icons from the themes it says there are no images. I was hoping there would be a different icon for music and the browser so that my dock would match more.
I'm attaching some of the images of my phone right now for others to get a good look.
And one more thing, where did you get that lockscreen and clock widget?

Thanks so much for the comments! Im glad you like it. The clock widget is called "Digital Clock Widget" in the market. Its usually the first one to pop up when you search it. I dont think I posted a lock screen. But I cant remember since i removed the pics. I actually usually just change the swipe actions in Go Launcher to hide the dock and status bar. But I now have discovered Statusbar+ and its really awesome! Looks like the windows phone status bar. all the icons will hide after a specified amount of seconds, except for the Clock in the upper right. really love it since its really minimalistic. when you tap the status bar the icons all drop in. Loving it.
I now just use the stock lockscreen. Im not sure why your internet icon didnt show up? I actually removed some of the custom icons that were in the last version. That means the facebook icon along with a few others will now use the original icon with the blue square around them. If you like Ill just upload the dock icons so you can change them manually. and maybe ill make a music icon for ya too!
Excellent. Better than some of the $2 themes I've purchased for Go Launcher. It's tough to find good minimalist themes!

I thought it was contacts, but I can't get the icon to work for it.

Hm, thanks for the new clock widget, it looks awesome. Though it's kind of lame that we can't use hex color codes or set the date and time to have the same color. Unfortunately something went very wrong with my phone after I installed and messed with this app. Random reboots, apps wouldn't load, extreme amounts of lag, home button stopped working, my extended power menu disappeared, you name it and I had it. Due to this, I was forced to send my phone back to stock. Oh well, I'll just stick with official TW now that we've got GB. Plus, TW is sort of nice now that I haven't used it in 6 months haha. I'll jump back to Go Launcher in a week since the TW icons are HUGE.
ANYWAYS, I am going to rock this theme once I can get my phone settled down and Go Launcher on this. A music icon would be awesome since I like having my music in my dock. And uploading all of the icons into the theme would be nice too since it'd give us options on which icons we'd like to use. And if you don't mind me being nitpicky, would you mind making an icon set of the stock icons but with the blue border? That would just be icing on the cake.

Yup, that's for contacts, I was wondering about this the first time I saw this also.
Yes that was for the contacts. Im really not sure why Go theme factory may be screwing up the apk. Im going to repackage a new one with the icons and without. Ill add the blue square to dock icons too as extras. Ill try to upload a zip with all the icons I make so you could just replace the dock ones with pngs if you want. Maybe thats how ill do the music one too is GTF doesnt package it right. Ill be sure to test it out first.
Also im relaly sorry to hear about the widget probs. Ive always had that widget and it never really gave me any problems. Maybe it was a malware app or something. Not sure about it. But Ill definitely add some more cool stuff to this theme since you guys seem to like it so much.
and heres some examples of another direction i want to go in for a theme...
Both were made in photoshop using mainly layer effects. Im leaning more towards the gray one. But the black one is inspired by my new Logitech k750 keyboard. I love the buttons and want something to come out looking like the theme is made of keys from this keyboard. enjoy.
Updated the apk. enjoy.

Thanks alot! I will be using your theme for a very long time.
You have great taste and should consider monetizing your work IMO.

These icons are really good. Very pleasant too. Do you have a zip of these icons?
Hi, id just like to update you on this theme. Im still loving it but i like a consistent look and feel to my phone so I've decided to use parts of this theme and and the ics theme. I love the way you've made the folders, background, and the app drawer look so I've kept those there. Here's some ss of my phone now. Thanks for making my phone look sick!

That looks absolutely rad! I love it. Mixing and matching works best i think. I found myself doing the same thing! Im really glad to see people getting a kick outta this theme.
