[Q] Ugly folder icons - Hero CDMA Themes and Apps

How can I change the ugly folder icons on my phone. I'm using ADW and when I long click on my home...custom shortcut....there's no option for replacing folder icons, only apps, shortcuts, and widgets. I'd rather not download another app (like app organizer), is their a simple work-a-round?.....Waited till I was out of warranty before rooting, so I'm new to the whole custom rom / theming thing.

You can get an ADW theme on the market for free, lots of colors, lots of icons, lots of folders. You just DL the pack, and you can either apply the theme which will automatically change your icons and folders in most cases, OR you can not apply the theme and choose a custom icon from the adw theme icon pack. Also, there are free icon packs all over xda, my favorite thread is the "icon collection - more than 425 icon packs". Search away.

You could try Desktop Visualizer from the Market...that would do what you want but obviously it would be another app.

Just long press your folder icon, tap the pic in the corner, and select a different one. Either from an icon pack from the market, or from your gallery.

Using that adw method, I like to change them to no icon at all. Invisible "hot spots" instead of icon clutter.
Sent phrom my fone.

Thanks for all of the help!!! I've been reading threads like crazy for the past month, playing with different themes and even making some of my own icons. I never got this involved in my phone before, but thanks to Sprint's new upgrade policies I've get several more months left with this phone to explore the possibilities. LOL

[THEME} Classy Grayscale

Been browsing around here and following the skyraider and all of ID's threads and there was something I felt was missing from both the sense and vanilla roms. I spent a bunch of time on the regular android theming threads, and this is what I have created so far.
It's in no way a fully polished, and easily flashed or MM'd theme (i don't like the idea of using MM)
See the pictures below for what I've gotten to.
What it consists of:
LauncherPro Plus
Apps Organizer
SwitchPro
TAJM
BattStatt
Pure Calendar
Desktop Visualizer
MinimalText icons
LauncherPro icons (from their website)
Zegoe Font
Sweet Chicago skyline background
I used LauncherPro to get a more customizable screen layout and remove the notification bar. I also love that it lets me change the icons for the dock (and the swipe gestures are nice)
Apps Organizer condenses a lot of my used apps, and Apps Organizer lets you pick custom icons as well
I used to use extended controls and SMODA widget but i didnt like SMODA's colors, so i switched to SwitchPro because of its working 3g on/off (a must since I need my battery to last a full day while I'm on campus). You cant clearly make the buttons out on the bottom, but they are nearly invisible until i touch them and they become white. Might not be everyone's liking but I dont need to see them.
Pure Calendar was used since I rely on my calendar and gtasks, and it was transparent which is what I really wanted.
Here's where I could use some help
I would like to be able to change all app icons to grayscale without using MM. I realize this might mean replacing files within apks for programs which wont be entirely possible
I wish the text size for TAJM was customizable, its too small and I would like BattStatt and TAJM to better use the home screen real estate
Package this into something more people can use/ customize without having to download all of the apps seperately or even use the apps (flashable?)
Still need a new lock screen. I liked the rotary one but I dont think that will look as nice since it uses a gray transparent bg. If it could be fully transparent, just leaving the two buttons, and the music controls either be light gray for off and white for on, that would be awesome.
I'm open to ideas and criticisms, just spent a few hours this weekend trying to gather all I needed but if someone knows a better way I'd love to know.
If there is any interest in this, I could package up the icons and fonts (sorry can't do the apks since most are paid apps). Just need to collect the info for the creators so credit can be given.

Applying icons to LauncherPro in CM

I am a pretty big noob when it comes to tweaking the system myself and stuff so I was hoping someone could help me out with this. I was using a theme on MIUI that I really liked, but left MIUI to go to CM for a couple reasons. I didn't like ADW so am using launcherpro which I really like so far, but I'm not a fan of the stock icons. I downloaded the theme I really like from MIUI and extracted the icon folder so that I would have the icons saved locally on my SD. It's essentially just a folder of .pngs. Can anyone tell me how to apply the icons I want to launcherpro directly through the system? I know with MIUI you just have to go in to a folder, paste the icon, and name it as the process. Was wondering if this was even possible on CM.
Thanks for any input someone might have!
Where do you want to put the icons in LP? in the dock or on the homescreens?
Dock: Long press on the dock spot - choose change Icon - Custom Icon and pick the icon you want from wherever you saved them on your SD card..
Homescreen: Long press on the homescreen - choose Shortcuts - pick application you want the shortcut for and then when the Edit Shortcut menu comes up - touch the icon and then select whatever icon you want from wherever you saved it on your phone.
Hope this helps...

Yeah, thanks a bunch for the response. I actually knew about that feature, but the reason I was asking was because that would take some time for like the 50 icons I wanted to change so I was wondering if there was a folder I could just make the edit in to be quicker.
Ahh ok
nope nothing I'm aware of
Extract all the folders from the apk onto your desktop or elsewhere to double check, but I'm pretty sure they are in the drawable-hdpi-v4 folder. All you would have to do is rename your icons to the names already existing in that folder and insert, recompile and boom, you're set.
Or if you'd rather not use apktool, you may be able to do it through an archiver as a shortcut. The phone might reject the apk if you try to install it though, but it should work.

[Q] ADW Launcher Ex icons doesn't change with theme

Hi
When I change the theme on ADW Launcher Ex, some of the icons does not change to the current theme, most notably the ones on the dock bar like the phone, contacts and messages icon. Weirdly though, others do change like the internet, calculator and maps icons.
I can manually create a new shortcut and choose the right icons from the theme icon packs. The missing icons is available in these theme packs but it will not change them automatically when I change the theme.
I also have GO Launcher Ex installed and when I change the theme on that, all the icons bow down to the power of my superiority and change to the current theme. No problems there...
Please let me know if there is anything I can do to fix this.
Not all ADW themers theme the same icons. So when you install a new theme some of the icons don't change.
I would think that the contacts icon would change though for instance because all the theme packs that I have installed have an icon for contacts but none of them updates it with their icon when I change the theme. I know that I'm not the only person with this problem but I can't find a solution. I found a similar thread on samsunggalaxysforum but with no solution.
for the app's icons that should change, i've had to delete the shortcut and put it back, then it changes. otherwise, the icon hasn't been themed.
ok thanks. it doesn't work for me though. if i have york's blue theme active for instance and i create a new icon for internet, it uses the internet icon from york's blue theme but when i create a new icon for messaging, it uses the default samsung touchwiz icon. i can manually change it to use york's blue icon but when i then change the theme again, it still shows the york's blue theme icon and not the new one.
i just installed the same theme on my DInc2 and i get the same results as you. i suppose the switch was overlooked by the author, or it wasn't themed. i do see a couple "message" looking icons, but they could be for other services. i don't really know. but i don't use themes, so i am unfamiliar with alt icons. i like my ADW plain-jane. sorry i couldn't be more help.
you can download icon packs from android market and change icons manualy by clicking on them..there are tons of them on market if i remember correctly.
click on app on your screen > edit > change icon > from adw pack > solved!
thanks guys. i guess thats my only option then. i think i'll use go launcher ex instead because there the themes automatically change the icons and as i like to change the phone theme to suit my mood, it's just too much hassle to change all the icons manually. it's a shame though because adw seems to be smoother and quicker.
adw is preety neat...but i had same problem even when i was trying to instal some themes...most of the icons normaly changed...but a few system apps havent :/ i can recomend MIUI if u're willing to try it
.
Thread moved to Q&A due to it being a question. Would advise you to read forum rules and post in correct section.
Failure to comply with forum rules will result in an infraction and/or ban depending on severity of rule break.
i have actually already downloaded cyanogenmod so i'll give that a try first and when i'm tired of it i'll try miui.
Thanks. I installed MIUI v 4 based on ICS and been playing around with it for a couple of days. I like it a lot.
ADW Launcher did exactly the same thing on MIUI so it seems to be something that the developer needs to address.

Transparent Backgroud for Icons Label

Hey guys, I'm wondering whether there is a way to get rid of the icon labels background on the home screen and make it transparent. IMO it looks ugly. I tried looking for a thread that has a solution for this already but I could not find one, if such thread exist, please help direct me to it.
And anyone who might know the trick to achieve this, please share. Thanks!
If you mean riddance of the black background for the white text for the the icons...

There are 2 ways I can think of (and have tried).
===== If you are on stock TouchWiz: =====
Try the app "Desktop VisualizeR" (spelt exactly like that).
Market Link
Do note it's not the most "efficient" way of making transparent icon label backgrounds so it might be too inefficient for people that change homescreen icons on a regular basis. As in it takes awhile to setup all the icons but it works.
Steps:
1. Go to home screen > add widget > Desktop VisualizeR (1x1 SS).
then...
2. Click on the widget > select icon and action (in this instance you can just use an app "Icon" as the "icon" and the "Launch" action as "launch the app" > fill or leave "Label" > set "Label Color" as "Transparent".
Another thing you can do if you want all your future icons to follow a "template" of your choosing (e.g. I want all my future icons created using this widget / icon to have white text on transparent background), then go into your Applications > launch Desktop VisualizeR program > click "Menu" button on your phone > Settings > and now you can play around with the settings.
===== Use another launcher (such as Launcher Pro or ADW etc.) =====
I'm pretty sure there is a setting in the launcher settings that allows all created homescreen shortcuts to have a transparent label background.
I use the GO Launcher App. It solves the problem easily and shows the switch of the homescreens smoothly ;-)
My favourite launcher @ Maket
Thanks guys for your responses. I really wanted to achieve this while keeping the stock TW launcher but there just really isn't an actual mod or anything for this. Since I also wanted to be able to rename the labels, I ended up using GoLauncher EX instead. It's a very good alternative and yes, it is very smooth, especially with a kernel running at 1.7 Ghz.
If you use GoLauncher, you probably noticed that the icons on the dock are much smaller than the ones on your home screen. To make them similar, or in some, equal in size, I had to extract the icons I use on my dock from those .apk's and re-sized them from edge to edge to get rid of the margins because that is what's making them appear small on the dock. I saved the edited icons and put them on my sd card and just used the "Change Icon" option from GoLauncher to use the ones I edited. I also went ahead and made custom icons from folders so that they'll look better at least.
I have a screen shot of my home screen below for you guys to check out. Btw, I'm loving the G-Note! This device is just epic!

Sure. Just download the attachment below. Make sure when you select the icons for use, that you press "No Crop" so that they will display properly.
Thanks a lot, you save me much big time.

How to edit icon packs?

Hi
I wanted to ask of something, i couldn't find it proper category here in XDA. I apologize for putting it under "general" category.
I use Dodol launcher and have installed some icon packs. The problem is that these icon packs contains 1000+ icons of those apps which i don't use and will never install. I know they are made for everyone so that it fits to everyone. I wanted to ask of some way that i be able to edit these icon packs and delete the unnecessary icons from these packs (icon packs are in .apk format) and keep those only which i need. This will reduce the load and also one major problem. When i am finding some icon for an app, i have to scroll so much and it takes time, and also icon loads with some few seconds gap. This becomes a painful process.
In Short, i am asking for helping me to edit these icon packs so that i can reduce them to those icons only which i need and delete the others which i don't need. Is there any way to do it in Android or even in PC.
I will be very thankful to you for helping me.
Awais.
