[BOOT ANIMATIONS](UPDATED)Doctor Who 4th, 10th, 11th Doctors

The animation is the beginning of the 11th Doctors Episodes. It displays the TARDIS swirling through a vortex of time and space. In fact, I took the snapshots during the newest "A Christmas Carol" Episode that aired on Christmas day of this year.

Connect USB > Copy and Paste bootanimation.zip (and/or SPC_animation_final.mp3) to your android-sdk-windows\tools directory. > Click start > run > cmd *enter*
Type: cd (directory of your android-sdk-windows\tools directory) *enter*
adb remount *enter*
adb push bootanimation.zip /system/media *enter* (AOSP/CM6.1.1)
adb push SPC_animation_final.mp3 /system/media *enter* (AOSP/CM6.1.1)
adb push bootanimation.zip /system/customize/resource *enter* (Sense)
adb push SPC_animation_final.mp3 /system/customize/resource *enter* (Sense)
adb shell bootanimation *enter
Make sure your screen is on when you do this to watch the animation.
To get out of the preview Hold CTRL then hit C.
This DOES overwrite your current bootanimation when testing it.
Comment it. Please no bashing Doctor Who or my work. This is my first release.
I do take constructive criticism though. Bring It.

BTW, I will take a few requests for bootanimations pertaining to Doctor Who. The reason is because I have every episode in existence (that I know of). So if you want a bootanimation from the startup of any of the doctor whos, you have to give me the episode name. For instance, you could say "I want Tom Baker's startup" But he has at least two different beginnings. So you need to specify from which episode, or describe the animation.

I am attaching a couple of MP3 that can be used as boot sounds or ring tones to go with your Doctor Who boot animation
to use as boot sounds put the file in
adb remount
adb push Doctor_Who.mp3 /system/customize/resource/SPC_animation_final.mp3
for ringtone
adb mkdir /sdcard/ringtones
adb push tardis.mp3 /sdcard/ringtones/tardis.mp3

Well our screens are 480 x 800 and I could resize the images smaller but they are already at 624 x 352. I know with an older boot animation I had the animation was choppy and blurry if I resized them down. I heard .jpgs should work...and they are smaller sized then pngs but I heard some phones are picky.

I know, dont get me wrong. The animation is crazy, would love to see it happen in my phone, but compared to CM boot-animation which is less that 2mb, this is a huge jump. This would take 20mb of my internal memory.
I mean just look at the attached file. That is the Droid. It barely reaches 1mb.
Anyways, good job with this new style. I was asking around if that was part of a movie. Is it??

Excellent work!
I would like to see a Doctor Who theme for our Evos. I build a WM6.1 Rom based of the 10th Doctor Who and Rose, but i have no clue where to start with Android (or time for that matter).
Now all we need is an app that will flash the LEDS when you get a notification, just like a Tardis. Possibly with an adjustable amount of flashes, like a text is a simple flash or two and several for a call.
Anyways great work, look forward to updates.

I like this. Landscape makes it look so much better. Like the boot sound and everything.
However is seems that I'm stuck in a bootloop. I flashed the .zip, cleared the delv-cache, and cache............nvm it just loaded. Its possible that it was due to Fresh 3.5xx, after wiping his roms seem to take longer to load.. No worries..
Also if you need a beta/update tester I would be more than willing. Im not a developer but I can test the crap out of something to find any bugs.

Also, here is an signed flash-able zip for those who wants the Dr Who sound in CM ROMS . Notice that CM has not boot sound enable but this will enable it.

A bit to LOUD
I dont know about the rest of you, but I think the sound on this is a bit loud,
I lowered the volume a bit and have attached the updated mp3
adb remount
adb push SPC_animation_final.mp3.zip /system/customize/resource/SPC_animation_final.mp3
Note the file extension .zip is only there because this side will not accept an MP3
just rename the file it is NOT A ZIP file

You must have flashed the audio file.zip posted for CM roms. I just opened it and only found the sound files. I will update it WITH the bootanimation here in the next hour or two.

I will try rezipping the audio for CM and Bootanimation (I have to add that) and sign/flash myself. UNLESS you are talking about the Sense version which I did make.
FYI: IF I adb push the SPC_animation_final.mp3 to the resource folder...I do get horribly loud sound. The Sense flashable zip that I created myself with Script Maker isn't nearly as loud. I think it is because Script Maker compresses it when you make the flashable zip. I will try ripping the audio from the previous CM audio link, add the boot animation, rezip/sign/test and if I get it in the next hour ill update the link. It is my fault...I didn't read the post enough I just updated the OP to reflect a flashable zip for Animation WITH sound...only to find out its sound only....This is my current project. Hold onto your butts (Yes, Jurassic Park).
(EDIT): I tested my bootanimation with sound for CM....really loud sound. Will try with the new boot animation sound with lower volume and if it is right for me, ill upload it.
(EDIT): I tried with the lower volume .mp3 version and I still get the loud volume. I don't get it to be honest.

Would this work with an Incredible? I don't really see a reason as to why it wouldn't, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

Be specific. Do you want the bootanimation AND sound? Do you want it in a flashable.zip to flash in recovery? I have no idea what recovery your phone uses, but i could find the Incredibles screen res, then resize or change the .desc file then post it in the Incredible theme section for you. BTW next time, pm me to try to keep it on topic for the EVO. I can make it work for the Incredible as long as the incredibles boot animation contains a part0, part1 folders and a desc.txt file. I'm sure we could work it out.
(EDIT):The screen res are the same between the Evo and Incredible. Assuming in your rooted Incredible you put the bootanimation.zip in /system/customize/resource (SENSE rom), or /system/media (AOSP/Cyanogenmod rom). I will post it in the incredible section in a few.

It won't flash for me. Says something about an update script.
Edit - just read your instructions. Should I assume this isn't actually flashable? I'd rather not mess with that pushboot business.

Pushboot WAY too complicated...try this, it's what I did:
After downloading it to my computer, I renamed it Bootanimation.zip. I set my phone to Disk Drive and slid the file over to sdcard/zips (you can move it anywhere on the card, that just happens to be where I keep my zip files). Set the phone back to Charge Only.
Went in Root Explorer, set it to R/W, went to sd card/Zips,and moved bootanimation.zip to system/customize/resource. I left my sound file in place (I like to hear the reboot process...it makes me aware when the phone does randoms...).
Backed out of RE, rebooted and VOILA!!!!
Sounds difficult, but it took 2 minutes and was quite simple.
Nice boot animation, too!!!

Ok, not sure what's happening but I downloaded both animations, put them in my resource file. All I got with each one was the word "Android" animated. I put the old animation file from Myn's and it was back to the original. What's up?
I put one in, then tried the other by the way.

Alright, solved my own issue, it was a capitalization issue I think. All good now.

Is there any way to skip the small (1 second?) blank screen before the beging of the boot appears with the Evo text?
That would be awesome if it went right from the reversed splash screen to the cube boot without seeing the transition.

The black screen your talking about isn't in the animation. I have no idea what it would take to fix it.

Here is the official CM10 boot animation that many of us have been waiting for! I've tested it and it works beautifully on the Infuse.

Instructions:
1. Download to your phone's SD card
2. Flash in recovery
3. Allow the device to reboot itself. It will reboot back into recovery (this is normal)
4. Reboot manually from recovery. The Samsung and CyanogenMod boot logos may seem to appear longer than usual. This is normal when you change the boot animation and adds only a couple of extra seconds. Please be patient.
5. Behold the glory of the official CM10 boot animation
Please note: I take no responsibility for the work done on this animation. I'm just simply passing it down to the Infuse community. All credit goes to the CyanogenMod team and Cameron Behzadpour. This is the 480x800 version that is compatible with our device.

You should be able to but I haven't tested it. Make sure you download the zip. Extract bootanimation.zip from /system/media/. Copy the file then mount /system as writable. Finally go to /data/local and paste. (Can anyone confirm this? I haven't done it in a long time)

The boot animation zip on my phone is in system/media. The reason I ask is because the cm9 one is like 200 JPEG split between the 2 folders an the new cm10 one is like 100. I was nervous something might look for those other files.

Ah this was useful "In ALL versions of Android since version 2.0, the use of /data/local is recommended as it is the first place the OS looks for the animation. If it cannot find one there, it defaults to /system/media. /data/local has at least 2 advantages: 1) the file size is not as limited as s/m allowing for larger animations or larger image sizes in them & 2) if you put it there and it is a bad download or any other reason it may boot loop, it is easier to remove from /data/local with a simple adb line and your device defaults back to the default one in /system/media."

Nice! For me, I found that clearing the caches, flashing the boot animation, then fixing permissions just to be safe made the boot-up process faster, for those of you who are impatient like me.

I like it also but is there a way to add a Flashing 10 in the Center for the CM 10
i am not a Photoshop person to do such a design

There is definitely a way to add a flashing 10. I have a lot of work to do now that I'm back at school, but you can find custom numbers and use Paint.NET as a substitute for Photoshop, and it's free.

This process is not as hard as it seems. Download the zip in the OP and extract it. In the extracted folder, you'll navigate to system>media>bootanimation where you'll find yet ANOTHER zip. Extract that and inside is the magic of the boot animation. About 100 different pictures in two folders that make up the boot animation. Edit each one to your liking in Paint.NET and add whatever effects you want. Repackage the boot animation zip file with the program of your choice, then repackage the WHOLE thing so that it can be flashed within recovery.
Use Boot Animation factory to preview your new boot animation and make it usable on your phone. It's just a tedious process. When editing the images, just make sure that you don't change the size of the image on accident.

Kudos for having the patience! I'm glad it turned out for you. If you want to really get adventurous you can make your boot animation completely custom with that method. Maybe you can start making a glowing Fallout logo boot animation for multiple devices and post.

Hmm...good idea. I made up a quick & dirty Aperture Laboratories (from Portal) startup screen a while back, so I know I can pull off at least SOMETHING...assuming I can stick with a ROM for more than a day

This is what I do for bootanimations, j use gimp (free...but you can use,any software...paint-lol, or just any image) to get the basic single image made at,480x800
Then I get a video editor...I use one on linux called lives (free)
I create a clip using the picture...usually picking 100-150 frames...at 25fps that's 4-6 seconds
I then mess around with the video effects...add swirls, spins, color changes, zooming in/out...etc
When done all the images are kept ins folder so I take that folder and copy it to windows...I boot into windows and use bootanimation factory to turn it into a proper bootanimation zip (can never get it when I do it myself)
If you can't locate the folder the images are saved you can save it into a video...you can then use software to extract the frames...anyways that's just a quick way to make boot animations instead of manually changing each image...

[GUIDE] Custom Boot Animations for SGR [ICS]

Friends,
This thread guides about the process of Changing the boot animation in ICS.
STEP 1
Make a backup of bootsamsung.qmg and bootsamsungloop.qmg from /system/media and remove them.
Now make a backup of samsungani and bootanimation from /system/bin
Download the modded samsungani and bootanimation files from this LINK.
Copy these files and paste it into /system/bin. It will overwrite the existing files.
Change the permission of both these files to rwx r-x r-x
STEP 2
Now you can get any of the custom bootanimation file. The name shud be bootanimation.zip.
Place the file in /system/media
A Collection of Boot Animations will be made available in the second post. You can download them and use it.
STEP 3
Download and Flash Ardatdat's kernel (either 4.1 or 4.2 beta 6) from this LINK
These kernels are modded to support Custom Boot animation
Reboot to CWM and flash the kernel
Reboot the mobile. Now u will have new custom bootanimation

Hey btw, I found an article last night on SIII forum where the developer(freeza) says that interchanging bootanimation and samsungani(I am guessing wanansmile used this hack) had a side effect, atleast in SIII. His solution seems a lot better and cleaner. It doesn't require any changes to bootanimation or samsungani. He just handles it with init script changes. I tested it last night, it works perfect on MIUI rom. Ofcourse we need to add 'stop bootanimation service on boot_complete' to the init script. He did not mention that in his guide but maybe its not required for SIII.

Thanks for the info buddy. Yeah i added stop boot animation service in init.rc script for preventing the infinite boot loop. Was going thru wanamsmile's modded kernel and checking for mods he done and finally found that he used the stop service to make it work. I will try with the above suggested method too buddy. :highfive:

Hey Selva Buddy,

This is tutorial of HOW TO make your own Custom boot Animations:
Making Android open-source is probably the smartest thing Google has ever done with their platform. Putting control in the hands of thousands of dedicated developers has left us with some fairly spectacular results. If you know what you’re doing, there’s a way to customize just about every part of Android.
Even the boot animation can be changed if you know how. If you’re tired of that boring start-up that came with stock, fret not because it can be changed. This isn’t the most complex hack (we’re not changing how Android handles multitasking). However, it is a nice option to customize another part of your phone. On a purely practical level, we’re a little sick of hearing the noisy boot-up noise for MIUI. This guide can help you change your animation so it’s exactly what you want.
The Android boot animation is stored within one very special file named bootanimation.zip inside the phone’s memory. Change the .zip, change the animation. It’s as simple as that.
What’s not simple is how Android stores bootanimation.zip. For some unknown reason, Android actually keeps two copies of the animation file. One is stored at /data/local and the other at /system/media.
The difference between these locations is minor. The /data/local copy does not require root access. The phone also uses this animation before the other. The other one in /system/media does require root. However, installing a new animation to /system/media means that it will survive a factory reset. It’s a trade-off.
Regardless of which location you decide to use for your new boot animation, be absolutely sure to back up the original files. When replacing bootanimation.zip, keep a copy of the original .zip file saved to your computer. To be absolutely sure, you may want to make a Nandroid backup before doing any modifications.
How It Works
This section is intended to inform those who might wish to make their own start-up animation. If you have no interest in doing so, feel free to skip ahead. Understanding exactly how bootanimation.zip works is not necessary to install a new one.
If you copy bootanimation.zip to your computer and unzip it, inside will be a collection of files. There will be folders labeled part0, part1, part2 and so on. Also included will be desc.txt.
For our MIUI ROM, the boot animation was split into two parts. Part 0 had a huge list of image files which it used for the animation. Part 1 simply held the final screen at the end of the animation.
Desc.txt contains extremely simple instructions telling the phone how to run the animation. The first line lists the width, height, and frame rate of the animation. So 480 800 24 means to run the animation at 480×800 resolution and 24 frames per second.
The next two lines refer to the animation files. “P” invokes a part folder. The next number tells the phone how many times to play that part of the animation. So our second line “p 1 0 part0” means that the animation files in the part0 folder will play once. If we put zero, then the animation will loop until fully booted. The most notable use of looping animations is CyanogenMod 7’s spinning blue arrow.
The second number in that line is the pause time. This tells the phone how long it should pause DURING/BEFORE/AFTER/ the animation. Pause time is measured in frames, so 24 would be 24 frames of pause at 24 frames per second. Thus it pauses for one second. Our 0 means the phone pauses for zero frames (no time).
Creating Your Own Boot Animation
The first step is drawing the animation. Create a series of images which form one continuous animation. The frames must be labeled by increasing numbers, e.g. 000.png and 001.png and so on. Each part of the animation goes into a separate folder, starting with part0 and part1 and so on.
Finally open Notepad and write out a few lines of instructions. The first line should be the resolution and frame rate of the animation. The resolution must match that of your device. If you don’t know what that resolution is, see this page. The frame rate should match the one in the original desc.txt.
The next lines dictate the parts. Each part folder requires one line of instruction. Write out the numbers for each part of the animation. Once finished, save the file as desc.txt.
The final step is creating the .zip file. Select all the part folders and desc.txt. Right click on the files and select Send To > Compressed folder. Windows should quickly create the new file. Be sure to name it bootanimation.zip and nothing else.
Various Methods of Changing the Boot Animation:
1) Installation by ROM
Although there is a universal procedure for changing the animation, certain ROMs and themes come with their own rules for flashing. The MIUI ROM lets you change the boot animation within its Themes app. You can download custom animations within the app, no modifications needed.
2) Installation by Flashing
Other themes come as .zip files which can be flashed within ClockworkMod. This is much easier and definitely recommended. When downloading a theme from XDA or elsewhere, be sure to check the page. It might be a flashable .zip.
To flash a .zip file, simply copy it to the SD card.
Reboot into recovery mode.
Now go to “Install .zip” and choose the file from your card. CWM should run the file.
Reboot once finished.
3) Installation via ADB
Obviously, this method assumes that you have the Android SDK installed. It’s sort of necessary. If you feel the need to change the boot animation in a really cool programmer way, here’s how.
3.1) Download an animation and rename it to bootanimation.zip.
3.2) Copy the .zip file to the directory where the SDK is installed and within the platform-tools folder. So it’s (installation directory)android-sdkplatform-tools. Paste the file here.
3.3) Plug in the phone and turn on USB debugging.
3.4) Open Command Prompt and type “cd (installation directory)android-sdkplatform-tools“.
3.5) Type “adb remount” to mount /system as read-write. You should get a success message.
3.6) Enter in “adb shell” then “su” to double-check that you’re in root mode.
3.7) Navigate to the animation folder by typing “cd /system/customize/resource“.
3.8) Rename the original to the PC by entering “mv bootanimation.zip bootanimation.bak”. Now the original is there if you want to restore it, but the system won’t use it.
3.9) Type “adb push bootanimation.zip /system/customize/resource” to copy the file over. That’s it!
Note: Here we are assuming that the file bootanimation.zip is located at “/system/customize/resource“. In case the file is located at some other location on your phone, replace “/system/customize/resource” by that specific file path.
To change the boot audio:
1) Find an mp3. It should be relatively short as most phones don’t take much time to turn on.
2) Rename the mp3 to bootaudio.mp3.
3) Copy it to the SD card.
4) Now open Super Manager and copy the mp3 to /system/media.
TADAAAAAAAAAAA...now you can make your own bootanimation.zip file.:good:

These bootanimations are for hdpi screens only buddy. Poor quality is because in some bootanimations, the pictures used are not of high clarity. Thats why u may find it bit pixelated in some animations. Will update some more high quailty pic contained boot animations.

Are you sure you didn't missed any step? I did all as in your tutorial, tried Nexus ICS boot animation...it did change to Nexus ICS boot animation but got stuck in boot loop... actually i can hear sounds by pressing on my display and have vibrations but animation is still playing over...

Dude try to Download and Flash Ardatdat's kernel (either 4.1 or 4.2 beta 6) from link whch selva has provided in OP, my self also had the same problem but after flashing the Ardatdat's kernel 4.2 beta 6 it's work like charm..

Yeah, I'm already on Ardatdat's 4.2 beta 6 (1GHz) since it came...lucky for me i made cwm backup... can it be because i'm on TheFrankenstain^MOD 4.0.2? Or is the kernel that Selva supplied modified?

Still need the STOCK LG startup/shutdown sounds if anyone has those. No carrier sounds!
You must be rooted to use these. Tested on a D851 but should work with all G3's.
Replace bootanimation.zip and shutdownanimation.zip in /system/media/ folder with files attached to this post.
Set file permissions on newly added animation files with chmod 644 or in a file editor like the pic below...

You have to delete the poweron.ogg file to get rid of the Att sound.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I can't hear anything when I set this up but can play it on my pc using MPC.

Well my solution was odd. I downloaded from my PC and put the file in to the downloads folder manually through USB. Then from the download folder you do the process outline above and it works fine.
When I downloaded from this site and did the process it didn't work as intended.
I'm slightly confused but I'm not complaining.

Does anyone know if in a future we install an ota update, what happens then? Will we preserve the stock boot animation or the older carrier one will be installed again? Not sure but ota updates are not complete roms, so we should preserve the animation we installed. Can anyone confirm this?

I downloaded this file but any of my players could play it. All others ogg files that I have are playing normally.

I don't do otas while rooted. I use the lg support tool and with that it will reset boot.img recovery.img and unroot you, basically rewrite your whole system.

Anyone know how to get the shutdownanimation working in the Verizon g3? Name is correct and permissions and even in correct directory and still nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

Could you possibly post a tutorial for this I want to use the android l startup and shutdown animations that I downloaded and get rid of the Sprint ones but can't seem to do it the right way

WORKS!
It somewhat works for Verizon's G3 (VS985) but only for the startup (the stock LG startup is still present so I'm not sure if it's supposed to still pop up).
The shutdown doesn't work, though, so any help on that?

Im gonna do a write up in the Sprint Themes section. I've been tinkering with them since day one of root and like a genius I just started deleting stuff. I finally got it right this morning on mine. I rooted my friends G3 and got hers good right away tho. These are the stock anis in /system/media on Sprint, not those ugly yellow spark anis from /carrier/cust
