If you're one of the few people that miss having an 'answer button' on the Nexus One, you're in for a treat. Unless you're using a Sense-based ROM
I created over the weekend a 'Trackball Answer' Phone apk forked straight from CM 6.1.1's Phone app.
For Froyo: Mirror 1. Mirror 2. MD5Sum: 36816def87f3c23ffd42f37a3b70e51b
For Gingerbread: Just get a recent Nightly. All CyanogenMod-based Gingerbread roms have my modifications and much, much more.
Flash the zip file from Recovery.
Source code is at my github, here.
I've tested this on both the G1 and the N1. Please report back if your phone isn't working, or this app makes your phone force close for whatever reason.
It's currently set to only listen to trackball events, but I know some phones don't have that and use a weird d-pad instead. If you'd like me to enable it through the d-pad, lemme know in the thread.
Package contains English, Spanish, German, Italian and French translations.
Finally, Trackball answer isn't on by default. To enable it, go to Settings -> Call Settings, and check the "Trackball Answer" options. I recommend "Double Tap to answer".
Changelog:
v5b a.k.a. Ye Olde Phone for Froyo
* Fixed and added Trackball Hangup options.
* Updated Spanish and German translations. (Huge thanks to xpatriick for the german translation and jrsoft for the spanish one)
v4 a.k.a. Rule 2.
* Added Double-Tap to Answer.
* Removed Hold-one-second-to-answer. It was annoying.
* Removed Tap to Answer. Current "Tap to Answer" means "Hold 350ms to Answer".
* Updated Eng, Spa, Fre, Ita and Ger translations.
This looks really interesting, I'm going to give it a try and report back.
Thanks. Due to some feedback, I'm adding an option to "hold trackball to answer" so you'd have to hold it half a second before it answers.
Should prevent accidentally answering your phone.
I'm also gonna add later an option to reject call & send sms.
when i try to download, ill get

It doesn't interfere. It goes active when you receive a call, and when you do, the screen wakes up anyway. If you press the power button (Which normally turns off the screen but doesn't end the call) and press the trackball, i *think* it answers the call, but I'll get back to you on this particular situation as I haven't tested. You could still wake the screen by pressing the power button again.
Very nice, this will help in those cases when the accept-call slider refuses to slide.
Also enables one-handed call pickup
how do you choose between the different settings?

Anyway, I use Resco Keyboard Pro 6 and I have modified the keys for my use.
So these sub-symbols on the keys over the nominal letters are as I wanted it to be
and that is really coool
This keyboard is not free, but it is definitely worth giving that 9,94$, cause
it is very convenient + configurable

But I want ask you some question:
1) how can delete the xt9 button?
2) I want delete some useless symbol, and instert the symbols €,<,>,^ when I pressing the button. How can I do?
Come posso fare?

1st You have to edit the png files.
2nd You have to edit the 0D09.xml (for portrait) or/and 0C09.xml (for landscape) file.
In these files You have something like this:

Yeh, GO keyboard sure is a nice keyboard.. tho i have a few questions/requests.
as im from sweden i would like to use the downloadable swedish dictionary BUT use English as the keyboard layout ( ie not have åäö on the keyboard as i can just longpress a and o to get them.) is this possible? it is in Smart Keyboard but i like the overal-look of GO Keyboard better.
anotherthing that would be nice is if i would hold "V" i would get ":" and if i would hold "S" i would get "#" etc
I am having trouble with the go keyboard dictionary. It wont save my words. It would be nice if we could edit the distionary like the HTC dictionary. Does anyone know how to edit the dictionary for go keyboard or where the dictionary is stored? Also It would be nice if there was a way to remove the top menu bar, is there a way? I am on Version 1.2.1
Is there a way to hide that whole bar above the top row of letters.. Where it shows English, etc..?
I'm using polish language on my chacha. When i write sms i see in notification bar information that xt9 En is enabled. So that everything i write in polish is underlined. I just hate it. Is there any possibility to remove that spell checking? or somehow use polish one? there is no configuration for this under menus i guess. Or I'm just serching in wrong one ;/
i'm on 1.52 with s-off and @fullbring_v2_eu
go to settings -> language & keyboard -> touch input -> hardware keyboard settings -> prediction (un-check this option)
Nah, i'm not talking about text prediction.
What i mean is that i have prediction off but english spellcheck is on underlining my polish words, as they don't exist in english dictionary. And under menu you mentioned, there is no option to disable it, or change dict language.
Yea, im having similar issue. Im using EU global rom.
Until today my language for typing messages was "Eng" (when you start typing message you will see small square on right side in notification bar, next to clock saying "Eng") and i was typing normally, without any issues.
Today i had OTA update of my ChaCha and my typing settings changed to "Eng xT9." Since im using Serbian language to type my messages it pointless to say that my every word gets underlined in red as incorrect word since it was not in english dictionary.
Its pretty much annoying to see your complete message underlined in red, and its lowering visibility of letters. Is there any way to disable "xt9" or change to normal "Eng?"
I found semi-solution. I installed Smart Keyboard from market and used it as default input method, and disabled all predictions spell corrections etc. it is not showing up with touch buttons and running in background so you can use your hardware keyboard as usuall.
hope it helped
I have the same problem, Azerty hardware keyboard and my language is installed in Dutch really annoying that every word is underlined!
so i have this problem too...i am coming from austria and we are using the htc chachas frequently for email checking and answering...
is there any solution now to solve this problem...i have also showing up the xt9 EN logo on the notification bar and i can't get away the red underline on each word.
i am using 1.54 with S-OFF
Can you guys perform a small check?
Set your phone's language to your country and start typing again. I have a hunch that xt9 is activated automatically by the ROM in the phone's language.

nope, already tried this...
switched from german (doesn't matter if i choose austrian, german or swiss version) to english and back again....
i think only in the original s-on country locked 1.18 version was a spellcheck for german, this was also the only version which hast the right qwertz keyboard.
now with cid 1111111 and original 1.54 there is no qwertz keyboard (even if i choose german language) and also no german spellcheck...
ok i can deactivate the dictionary funktion, but the spellcheck which underlines every word in red, i can't....
can you find out, which file does this spellcheck, so i just can delete it or do whatever it takes, to stop working.... i don't want a german spellcheck or a dictionary, i just want it to stop underlining f#####g words P
Is this available on the stock ROM?
Menu -> Settings -> Locale and text -> keypad -> XT9 [ ]
Tick XT9 for predictive text. Then go into XT9 advanced settings and fiddle about. There are tick boxes for Spell correction and so on.

nope... we only have to edit dictionary or to sync it , under keyboard settings (
no xt9 mentioned
I have the same problem
Alex, i don't have that section under settings..
running 1.52
HEUREKAAAA... i have the solution
it couldn't be easier...i am so dumb, really...!
to change the language of xt9 from EN to any other (in my case DE) just press FN + Spacebar to open a menu, where you an choose the XT9 language...
now i do not have anymore red underlines when i am typing an email or any other text in german...yihaaa!!!
update: now the dictionary is also in the right language...awesome-oooo
update2: for all those people who have keylayout problems after s-off and thinking this could ix it....it won't...this is for spellcheck and dictionary only...the keylayout files have to be edited by hand like we know it

i see...you can only change it but not disable it...how dumb is that?...
Exactly the same problem for me
xt9 came with the 1.52 update, and I didn't find how to disable it yet.

I haven't found any keyboards for ICS Asus Transformer which allow to switch input language on the dock keyboard, so I hacked standard ICS keyboard to allow russian and english layout to be used on the dock keyboard. Here is the apk, enjoy.
What works:
* All standard features, like soft keyboard and voice input should work correctly.
* Switch between russian and english using Ctrl-Space, or Ctrl+Shift (I can potentially change it to any other key combination)
* Russian and German and a few others layouts on dock keyboard
* NO ROOT required, the keyboard can be installed in addition to standard keyboard.
TODO:
* load kcm files
* add layouts for some other languages if anyone is interested
* pick up a sane name for the keyboard modification
* caps lock is ignored in russian mode
* Ctrl-Space and Ctrl-Shift changes layout, but doesn't update the selected keyboard subtype in list of keyboards.
Changelog:
2012-03-12 - azerty for french, fixed ENTER key to work correctly with search widget.
2012-03-11 - Restored back qwertz for German layout
2012-03-10 - Using TF101 Original KCMs provided by @bouod. German kcm layout uses qwerty instead of qwertz. Is it fine?
2012-03-09 - Added alt-<key> combinations to german layout.
2012-03-06 - added experimental German support (to enable - enable German language in keyboard settings)
there's an app called "Russian Keyboard", it works almost perfect. Just set it to "external qwerty"/

I've just tried the "Russian Keyboard":
* it works
* soft keyboard is pretty crappy (I like ICS keyboard much more, I should probably add a layout switch key to it, which is the one thing I dislike about it)
* Location of 'ё' key is unknown.
My version:
* standard ICS keyboard
* slight changes to switch dock key layouts
sounds good to me
i have been trying for 2 days to get asus keyboard working on Eos and got it but not in the dock part
I would love to write "Arabic" in my doc
appreciate your help
thanks
Ivan, btw, you're my тезка=), can you change language switching method to ctrl-shift or fn-shift? It would be awesome.
For rukeyboard you can assign ё key, but you have to disassemble its apk.

I have taken a look at the arabic keyboard on wikipedia and tried to type arabic on android. It looks much more complicated and I'm not sure I fully understand how it supposed to work. I can give you my modifications if you want to try yourself.
Nice modification mate !
Could you please share the source of your decompiled apk ?
Or even better, a full eclipse project would be nice !
BTW, with what thingy of editor are you reverse engeneering the keyboard apk ?
I would love to see this mod for german users

I could do that if he would give the source to me.
Or if he does by himself .
I could provide the translated layout files.

thank you for looking, indeed it's harder than some others
I can try with your modifications if it's OK
Edit: maybe asus keylayout-keychars could help you doing any lang!
have you done any other modification in your system other than this .apk? It seems doesn't work for me. ctrl+shiift or ctrl+space doesn't change anything.
i just installed it as a normal .apk. Should i push it to /system/apps?

You have to go to settings, languages and input, then select android keyboard+ then the ctrl+shift will work.
thanks a lot. i forgot about it completely - thought it would replace system .apk. Now it works perfect.
Guys, please tell me how you decompiled it or at least share your sources with me as JDGui keeps fc'ing so I don't know antoher way to do it myself.. ...
Ivan, can you post sources? i'd try to port it to Desire Z.
Also, btw, works great with external USB keyboard.

I can make this work for German and Russian. You will just need to enable one of them in keyboard layouts. You just need to give me the keyboard map without and with shift for entire keyboard, like this:
Without shift:
`1234567890-=
qwertyuiop[]\
asdfghjkl;'
zxcvbnm,./
With shift:
[email protected]#$%^&*()_+
QWERTYUIOP{}|
ASDFGHJKL:"
ZXCVBNM<>?
What characters do you use in german?
It looks like de keyboard layout uses key combinations to produce characters like: ¹²ẑâáź...
Do you need them?
I haven't decompiled the keyboard apk, I instead compiled it from source with my modifications, using source.android.com
Sources are attached on the top post.
Is it the right german layout?
Without shift:
^1234567890ẞ´
qwertzuiopü+#
asdfghjklöä
yxcvbnm,.-
With shift:
°!"§$%&/()=?`
QWERTZUIOPÜ*'
ASDFGHJKLÖÄ
YXCVBNM;:_
I can easily add it to the keyboard...

I added the german layout. To use it you should enable German in the Input Languages menu. Try switch to "German (Android Keyboard+)".
Ctrl-Shift, Ctrl-Space should toggle between English/German/Russian(if enabled in input languages).
