g tablet owners vs ex-owners - G Tablet General

After reading many posts, some are deciding to keep it and some don't. Let's start a poll!

You might not get too many ex-owners as they won't be on this forum anymore.
Still, I'd love to get a poll of just how many users are out there, and how many have modded it. I can't go on firmware downloads as there could be multiple downloads from the same person.

Good point! As long as you are not a ex-owner, we are good!

I was an owner, then became an ex-owner, then an owner again.
I got my first one in November when Sears first had them. This was before there was really any mods going on. I kept it about a week and liked it except the WiFi would error out most of the time. I returned it and got a Hauwei S7. The S7 was actually pretty nice as it had a good out-of-the-box experience (full market, gapps, etc...), but in the end the terrible battery life got me to return it.
So I got another gtab after monitoring these forums and seeing such good progress with the mods. I got it home and the touch screen just didn't work right (top half hardly responded to touch). I exchanged it the next day and everything worked on this one except it would not wake from sleep. I tried all of the various ROMs on it and was happy, but after a week or two the sleep issue just got too annoying for me so I returned it again. Finally I seem to have one where everything works - no Wifi, sleep, or touch screen issues so far.
Right now I've just side loaded some apps I like to use, but otherwise it's completely stock. I was planning to put the VegaN ROM on it after the OTA update on Dec 19th or 20th comes out just so I can check it out on a stock tab, but I don't think I can wait and will probably update it this weekend.

Owner here then after the new tegra devices...I'll be an ex owner but then my son will be a new owner.

Man! I'm disappointed! With the title I was hoping we were gonna have a rumble!
WWE presents! The Tablet Wars!
Me, I will be in the audience watching. I'm too old to rumble anymore

In case you haven't seen it there's a thread on a fix for 'touch sensitivity' in this forum.
Jim

I'm a big fan of CM, so I'm hoping to see improvements.. That said, I'm a total VEGAn. The only thing that'll get me to replace it.. is new better equipment... easier said than done just yet.

Still own it ...
The hardware is good, the only issue is the software part. I'm
in for the long run ... most likely Viewsonic or others will release
a update that will make the gtab run better ..
Now it's a waiting game.

I am in the in between keeping it and taking it back. I am going out of town tomorrow, and the battery life on this will keep me occupied on the plane. Wish it would play x264 to make up for the lack of quality of the screen but an optimized rom wont be out by tomorrow. I am going to be buying a nook color soon in a few weeks because I think I am more into 7" tablets after playing with it in the store.

As long as it is not a hardware defect, I am definitely keeping it as I am not a big fan of ipad
I am happy with the the vegan rom and the screen issue doesn't bother much anyways.

Brought it home and loaded "XDA special ROMs" right after charge hit 100%. No looking back since.
Thinking of selling my dell XT 12" laptop to buy 2nd GTab.

i'm keeping mine until there are better ones. probably a couple months from now when the android tablets start to stabilize and there's good competition, prices will drop and should see some really good hardware. then i'll probably pass this one off to someone else in the family.

+1. Was pretty much always my plan. But this has been a lot more fun in the meantime than I had been expecting!

Planning on keeping mine. Still on TnT Lite 2.0. Wondering which ROM to do next.

I had one but returned it to Sears after a week. The screen would not respond quickly to input. I ran Vegan with Launcher Pro. I'm picking up the B&N nook color since I see Froyo is coming in January. The 7" form seems to be best for my household.

I might be returning mine tomorrow office depot up the street from my house where I bought it pulled it for a manufacters recall and offered me my money back, which makes me think that this is more than a software issue that an update can't fix.

There is a thread with a fix for those having that issue. Basically, add an empty text file named calibration.ini to the root of sdcard2 (your micro SD card) then reboot and don't touch the screen while it boots. You should see great improvement. Then delete the file or add a .bak to the file name so calibration does not run again unless you need it after a rom flash.

Loaded tnt lite... then vegan....have had no problems, so I'm keeping it.

played with the viewsonic g tab at office depot

I have to say after doing the updating in the store from my nexus i am very much unimpressed, if this is what dual core tegra phones are gonna be a like count me out. The screen looks great the ui is horrible and the thing is extremely slow and the touch screen is very unresponsive. The design seems different from the 1 I see on the sears website so I'm assuming there is a difference between the 2 for the screen. Any further input would be you wonderful though as I can't see spending 399 dollars on thhis. I have been thing is getting a galaxy tab but it seems like development is awfully slow on it

well... there aren't many people here that are going to disagree with you at face value. the UI is crap and it hinders this from greatness out of the box. The ad pictured in Sears is the wrong picture, Sears, Office Depot, and Staples are all carrying the same thing.
hopefully based on your post count and the fact that you own an N1 I'm sure you know why you are here. This is a solid device, just not out of the box. Go through the threads and you will hear the same thing.
If you don't mind (or actually enjoy) a little flashing then you will be good to go. the are instructions that have covered pretty much every issue that Viewsonic screwed up here.
Most of us went into it knowing we had a 30 day return policy and majority of us aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
Good luck and as you probably know, don't hesitate to ask.
Once you flash it is speed it up tremendously or really not a very noticeable difference? Vs The galaxy tab what do you think is the better device. Can you install stock firmware
Most of the mods remove the TapNTap UI and replace it with a more familiar Android interface. And the latest mods have the newer Tegra drivers which boosts performance.
I would not go on what you see in the store. It's night and day with what the mods give you. But, the device still has flaws - some games don't work properly and the screen angles are not very good versus a Galaxy Tab.

If your feeling adventurous you could always bring a microSD loaded with TnTlite 2.2 and flash the floor model. Then you can see for yourself how good it really is

funny you should mention that. I actually had mine flashed before I was out the door of sears that first week it came out
But YES... the difference is night and day. I am a proud Galaxy 'S' Vibrant owner (AXURA 2.1, FROYO, with Front Facing Camera) and just didn't see the benefit of a 7" tablet over my phone for the money; had Samsung gone with a 10" it might be a different story. Paying for an additional data plan wasn't my cup of tea either seeing I can tether my tab wirelessly to my phone and I also have a ClearSpot MiFi router, I decided to try this route and I am very happy that I did.
Again, with a return policy you really have nothing to lose (except time well spent).
I never even tried to use it with the stock firmware. I flashed mine as soon as I got home. I saw the videos and knew I didn't even care about it at stock. I also enjoy flashing my devices. It is fun to kill some time. I am currently using the latest TNT lite. I love mine.
Well, the UI is fast and responsive once you install one of the modified ROMs. Stock TNT definitely sucks. The hardware itself is good - if you don't mind the moderately crappy LCD. That we can't improve in software.
Lots of hacking and alternate ROMs out in the less than a month this device has been on shelves. When we get source code from Viewsonic, expect even more.

Try searsoutlet as lots of people got a return for @ $279.
I got one at that price (now I own two now)
Ok thanks called and its a no go when did you find it online or store

G-tablets are $100 off at woot.com today

Time to pick up a second? Plus the description comparing it vs. the iPad is pretty hilarious.
WOOT! I just bought one too.
I have a feeling that after today, there will be like twice as many gtablet owners. I can't wait til honeycomb!
lol not again. In b4 closed
I bought! Very happy.
Just bought one for my wife Let's see how long it takes to arrive here in Sunny South Texas.
Picked one up.
I've been waiting to get a Xoom, but with the price so cheap, I couldn't resist. It will be my first tablet.
Just got one today, i'm so psyched, this subforum is going to get a FLOOD of new users
In for one. On a unrelated note, I now have a Nook Color for sale.
So if these threads keep getting deleted because they are duplicates, where is the first thread?

My sentiments exactly! Although I was also kind of waiting for a firm price and release date for the Acer EEE Slider, but for $285 I couldn't pass it up. I initially bought a gtab when sears first started selling them, but after using it for a week or so, I came to the conclusion that I wanted to keep it, but not for $420(after tax). I ended up returning the Gtab. Does anyone know of any good tips/tricks to improve the viewing angle? Also are there any nice speedy 2.2/2.3 roms that allow you to disable the hardware buttons on the face of the gtab and assign a hardware button for home or back?
So I'm early at the movies and I'm poking around on my droidx and I spot this post. I cruise over to wootand sure enough there it is. Do I need asecond tablet? Well, I think, then I can experiment without messing up my vegan that I'm now accustomed to using. Makes sense eh? A quick check revealed nothing close to this price elsewhere so I did the transaction all on my Droid and soon the fun will begin in earnest,. A little sting when the CC bill arrives but so many hours of interesting problem solving to look forward to. My geek factor really spiked tonight! Thanks for the heads up!
haha first time tablet owner too!!! just bought one impulse buy! hope i dont regret it!
I had to pick one up too. Ive been looking a all sorts of tablets and waiting for a good deal... well $279 was too good to pass up. I look forward to customizing the hell out of it like I did with my Captivate.
OMG!!!!
I got 1 too.
That takes the fear out of ruining my original.
I've been looking for a good case/stand with keyboard for the last hour or so and just found this:
http://www.amazon.com/Viewsonic-G-T...3LRLVE&s=merchant-items&qid=1300939884&sr=1-1
Hopefully I can save some new owners a bit of time, it was hard to find a case that would fit.
Looks almost like the one I have, but the previous (i.e. messed up one) if the picture is 100% correct.
The one with 2 tabs (left), 1 tab (top + bottom) holds it fine, but the one pictured does not (2 tabs bottom 1 left/right).
Everything else is the same though, and people moved the tabs on those so it might work for you. Look back in past threads, and you should find it. WitGlobal I think is the company if they still make/sell them.
Ordered one up for myself. After taking back the NC last week because it was an impulse buy! Can't beat that price!
Lol I got one. Woot...... 280

I got one too!!!

A Wooter's first impression

The tablet arrived yesterday. I dropped, of coarse, everything I was doing and opened the box. First thing I though when I had it in my hand was ‘it’s heavy’. I don’t know why I thought it would be lighter. It weighs 811gr or 28.6oz or 1.78lb.
Turned it on and started to look around. No dead pixels on the screen. Found the WiFi icon and connected it, no problem. Soon it asked me to update and I let it do it. Once back up and running I started to play Angry Birds. This game should be outlawed. It’s to highly addictive. My thumb is hurting today.
I charged the batteries until the green light came on.
After a few hours of playing around and exploring it was time to mod it. First came ClockWorkMod. I had read for days all that I could about moding, bricking and recovering and was ready. Next came VEGAn 5.1 and then the upgrade and last I installed the Clemsyn’s kernel. Try as I can, I couldn’t brick it. It all went smooth. I guess those who brick it just don’t read the instructions. It really was no problem at all.
By the time I was finished with all this my hands were tired from holding the weight of the tablet and I got to see why people complain about the screen. You just can not hold the unit constantly in front of you. It’s too heavy and when you slack, you drop it a bit and the viewing angle changes and you don’t see as well. I most definitely will upgrade the screen if a new screen comes out, like they are talking about in a thread or two in this forum.
Once VEGAn was running I tried to connect to the net but it wouldn’t. I saw no WiFi icon, like in the original software. After looking around for a while, getting frustrated about not being able to connect to the net, I found the icon in ‘setting’ and connected to the net again.
I kept the unit active for a few hours, playing around with it. After about 6 or 6.5 hours the batteries where down to about 8%. It was advertised as having eight to ten hours battery life. I’m not happy with this short fall.
To sum it all up I have three caveat with this unit. The weight, the screen and the short battery life. Still, I’m content with the unit. Couldn’t have done better for this price.
I agree on the screen but the weight doesn't seem to bother me too much and I'm getting awesome battery life on TnT lite 4.4. You may want to let it charge fully and then run it down a couple of times to see of that helps. If those modders can replace the gtab screen fairly easily and it's not too expensive, I might think about making a change too. In the mean time, I just remind myself that I got a really good deal on some decent hardware overall.
Sent from my GTablet-TnT-Lite using Tapatalk
I took mine to work today, playing with it off and on over the course of an 8 hour work day, connected to my Evo's hotspot, and I had around 40% when I got home. I guess it all depends on what you're doing with it.
And the screen ... yeah, the angles are horrid, but I've gotten used to it. When it's good, it's really good though -- showed the gf her competition for the first time tonight, and she marveled at how bright and clear the screen was. She didn't even notice the angles until I demoed that aspect for her.
So far, the angles are the only complaint I have left. Can't believe I got this for $300, especially since I was days away from buying a Xoom for twice that.
Another wooter's impression....
My tablet arrived on time, in perfect condition and no dead pixels. My research between buying and getting the tablet, paid off, I CWM ed it and installed TNT Lite 4.4 on it. Was a tossup between Vegan and TNT Lite, chose the latter due to Roebeet's putting in the CWM to stock recovery switching scripts in TNT Lite 4.4. This is just in case Viewsonic releases a stable HoneyComb based ROM in the next few weeks. The performance is better than I expected, battery life is great, and have relatively very few FCs.
It does seem a bit too heavy to hold for extended periods, so ordered a compact stand for it. Regarding the screen, inverting the tablet does seem to get better horizontal screen quality, especially when lying flat on the table, so I am using it a good bit inverted. Softkeys in the wrong position, but can get used to that.
One thing I miss is the notification LED colors, for different mail apps which I have on my phone running Cyanogen Mod 6.0. Also cannot seem to play flash from Dolphin or Firefox (needs plugins??). So am using the stock browser for now. Maybe it is time to look at the app forums
Overall, pretty happy with the unit, thanks to all the help from XDAers.
Got my tablet today too. While I did hit a snag using NvFlash, I was able to resolved it and now running TnT lite 4.4. Hah, love the honeycomb boot screen on this one. LOL.
Anyway, it's no secret the screen sucks, and the one I got also suck. At least it has more "pop" than my xoom. The screen resolution also too small for the size of the tablet. I tried beautiful widget tablet edition, and the things covers the whole screen. Compare that to my xoom, the widget (4x1) only covers about 1/3 of my screen, which is perfect.
I don't mind the weight, especially compare to my xoom, and even to my iPad with cover, the Gtab feels lighter.
I still haven't get the chance to test the battery. I didn't even wait for it to charge fully before doing the rooting/flashing. I just plug in the power cord, and started flashing. Something I'm too afraid to do with the xoom. LOL.
The screen is both good and bad for me. I think my neck might be stiff from looking at the screen. However, I love it that no one but me can see the screen when I'm at work.
The weight is fine. I expected it to be thick as well, and it doesn't really feel that thick.
The battery life is a bit sucky. I might have a slight lemon, but it's still very useable.
I like the UI in tnt, so I'm spending more time in TNT lite.
Having android market is a must:-D
USB port is awesome!
I tried to stick my microsd card from my BB into the slot and it wouldn't take it without reformating, so I'm still without a microsd.
This forum is absolutely the best. Thanks guys!
That's my observation for the week.
rooted and flashed with newest version of TnT yesterday, everything worked perfectly... for about 24 hours. I booted it up this morning and now I was getting a force close message saying "The process android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." This popped up about every 5 secs and the keyboard wouldn't work, most of the Apps wouldn't work, market wouldnt work, and you couldn't access the "settings" to do a factory reset. I did EVERYTHING exactly as I was supposed to for the Root and Rom flash and didn't skip a thing.
Ended up reflashing the Vanilla Rom, reflashing TnT, rebooting a dozen times, trying to wipe the unit, NONE of that fixed it. After spending my entire day searching on how to basically "unbrick" my brand new Gtab, turns out it wasn't anything I did wrong. If you have any unnamed contacts in your contacts list, for some reason the file becomes corrupted while trying to sync. With the file corrupted it causes a FC, and tries again, every few seconds. Link below to how I fixed it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853537&page=2
Mine came this week and my 12 year old called every 15 minutes...
asking when I was coming home.
Day 1 - recharged it...green light went on about 10:30 pm and my 12 year old jumped out a bed and we started playing around with the machine. Got wireless working and messed around for 20 minutes or so and then quit for the night.
Day 2 - I came home from work early and we got out three sets of instructions and cross compared and with a little help from Steve...started the process, mostly following this VEGAN process.
http://www.blendblog.net/Default.aspx?tabid=36&EntryID=67
Worked like a charm! Best thing that I wasn't expecting...it looks just like my DROID phone. Even the market works the same and...to my surprise...all of the software I had purchased on my DROID phone was still listed as PURCHASED on my TAB and cost nothing to install. WHOOHOO!
After a couple hours we decided to clean it off and put on the Skinomi screen protector. Wish I had one to practice with and one to put on for good. :/
Didn't put enough solution on it and it kept sticking and I had to pull it off...finally put some more solution on it, tried to clean off the dried stuff on the screen and reapply...worked like a charm. Didn't keep sticking and I was able to move it into position just like I wanted and then let it dry. Unfortunately, I was a bit impatient thinking I was ruining it and didn't clean the screen the best the second time. I have a couple tiny peices of green lint from my "lint free" cloth under the screen and one little fingerprint smear. Not perfect, but worked great once I knew what I was doing. The screen definitely is a finger print magnet and a screen protector is really necessary.
Got up this morning and my three youngest played games while I got ready and then I stole it back to bring to work.
Next up - figuring how to add swype! Oh yeah, and waiting for my CLIP to arrive!

I've noticed too that the screen looks better upside down. I'll try using it upside down and see how it works. I don't mind the soft keys since I'm not that much used to it yet, what with it being new and me having it only one day.
Got mine Thurs. morning. Played with stock for a few hours, then switched to TnT lite. An already fast machine got faster!
I own a Motorola Droid, which was my introduction to Android and os hacking, and a Pandigital Novel which was my introduction to cheap tablets. This is definitely a fantastic piece of hardware for under 300.
*note: When we say the sucks, please understand that it's bright and sharp- as long as you look at it head-on. Whether or not that will be an issue is a matter of personal preference. It's not a dealbreaker for me and I think the issue is a bit overblown.

I thought I was getting great battery life, until I realized that TNTlite has a bug where the power meter is pegged at 100% no matter how much actual life is in it.
Overall, I'm very happy with it. Any frustratons I'm having are more adjusting to the form factor than anything about this tab specifically.
I agree with the assessments so far. I didn't bother with swype and decided to buy ultra keyboard which works well. Also bought case with USB keyboard and that makes a huge difference when trying to do productive stuff like emails. The biggest surprise for me was that it runs MLB.TV without too much trouble. I think I might be able to use my Evo hotspot and location faker and watch blacked out games. So far I'm really happy and will be selling my nook color on the bay.

If you use ADW Launcher or the paid version of Launcher Pro, you can resize widgets. Both also allow you to change the numbers of rows and columns to give you a larger grid to work with.
Or check out the new tablet-centric launcher that's being developed in the themes and apps subforum. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1017451 Looks really good -- I'd use it if I wasn't so addicted to LP's widgets.
You can easily bend this puppy to suit your needs
That's why you fully charge the battery FIRST...I have been using it for 5 hours and still have 60 percent left.

Nice! Thanks for the link. Looks like I'm playing the Gtab for a while. Sorry, kids. LOL.
I don't mind the screen at all in landscape, but the screen is basically unusable for me in portrait because the viewing angles are so narrow that the left eye sees a very different image from the right eye, which create a weird shimmering effect that makes it very uncomfortable to read.
Mine arrived yesterday. I charged it overnight and saw how weak the stock ROM was. After some mistakes and sweating, I got CWM to properly work and installed TnT. Awesome!

Zeam Launcher is free and will also allow you to resize your widgets. I've tried the other launchers, but Zeam seems to be the best for my G-Tab so far.
Wooter here also. Mine arrived on Wednesday so I've been play a lot with it.
I followed this guide and was able to install ClockWorkMod and TNT 4.4.
As said before, I'm not sure why Viewsonic used this screen with horrible viewing angles. The portrait/vertical mode is also bad as the brightness is a little whacked and hurts your eyes looking at it. The only way to view it perfectly is 90 degree and center in landscape/horizontal mode. The front facing camera is also pretty awful, but that's not an important feature to me. It also sucks that the soft key buttons aren't lit up, its hard to see them when in low light.
But the reason I went with this tablet over the iPad is not only because of the price, but adobe flash support. And after installing the Dolphin Browser HD, which took a while to find and install, flash is running well. I don't consider a full web browsing experience is possible unless there's flash support. And this android tablet does it very well.
Overall, I think this is a decent tablet for the price. I hope future android updates will make it even better, like supporting both cores of Tegra2. And hopefully, there will be a lot more tablet apps as many android apps currently don't work well in tablets.
I've had mine for a few days, and after playing around with the stock ROM became convinced it stunk on ice.
I'm a relative noob (have an Epic and a Galaxy Tab, but never rooted either), but went ahead and with the excellent tutorials made a run at it. Yeah, I made mistakes as well, but now CWM and TNT 4.4 are up and running. Wow! Smooth and soooo much faster than the Viewsonic crapware.
Love the size, the brilliance of the screen, and I have found if I prop the thing on a pillow, the angle of view is just fine.
Thanks, XDA devs!

I have reached the d-day on remorse period. What are you going to do?

I have no idea what to do. I have followed all the experts advice regarding battery life and it has improved, but it is not even close to my HD2. I was really hoping one of the genius devs would have reworked the battery drivers by now. I say that because I have seen them work miracles before.
I use my phone for business and getting emails in a timely matter is also an issue.
So should I hang in and hope Gingerbread or Ice cream fixes the issues or are there deeper problems with this phone?
I am still strongly considering the Sensation. I am not concerned with the locked boot loader because I am a member of XDA and they always figure those things out. Kinda miss the larger screen and build quality of HTC.
Anyone else on the fence about this phone?
I dont have any issues at all with my G2X, but I just went on HTCs website, and looked up the Sensation... Wow.
As long as I can remember I've wanted a phone with sense, now that I have a great phone, the allure of getting one with sense and having everything integrated the way the website shows is AWESOME!
I'm torn, because on one hand, there will be alot of great development for this phone, but on the other hand, I think, that I would much rather keep one of my phones stock, and let updates come naturally...
With this phone I was rooted and installed a custom rom as soon as one was available.
I think I might just return my G2X till the sensation comes out... I still have about 8 hours to make a decision though.
I've about had it with the issues that I am having.. Having returned one G2x for another, both are having the same problems. I have until Friday night to return - I may resort to borrowing an old flip phone until the Sensation comes out.
Random freezes - random reboots - random shutdowns - serious battery life inconsistencies...
What's worse - the same problems are happening with CyanogenMod too.

If you like it, keep it. Not so much? Return it. Simple as that
I like the look of the Sensation, will there be worse battery life on the sensation?

clicked the wrong button.... nobody knows, just wait til it comes out
Ha, well I want to be sure before my 14 days is up, I guess I won't know. I hope my g2x gets better battery life soon
returning another g2x. i have 30 days so when the sensation comes out i will even exchange.
I ordered mine on the 20th so the day the phone was out in the store. I had to order mine online since i am a T-Mobile RSA. I have alittle screen bleed but not much. I will be doing exchanges until i get one with no bleed. Other wise i have had no problems at all. No reboots, lock ups, data problems, nothing the phone is rock solid. I love the phone. Every person that has come into my store with problems i have told them that T-Mobile is going to exchange this for you under the lifetime warranty if you have it for the life of you having the phone. So you have nothing to worry about. The phone is a great phone to have. Do the exchanges until you get a working one. I know i would do it until i did. Even if it meant doing it 100 times. Also my understanding is that sensation is going to be locked down which is the reason why Cyan did not want to get one but got the G2X. So if thats the case have fun trying to get a mods on the phone.

HTC's have a history of poor battery life. Sure you can mod, but then your hoping a dev can pull **** out of a hat for you...

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I have until Friday to return mine. Battery life was the main reason I got the g2x over the sensation, reasoning that htc usually has terrible battery life. However with all the current battery troubles, I'm not so sure I made the right choice. The most confusing thing is the reviews I read (cnet, bgr, engadget) all said the battery life was above average. Did they get different units or something? If the battery life isn't any better on the g2x, and if sense 3.0 isn't so terrible, other things like the qhd screen, more ram, and htc quality make the sensation pretttty appealing. Thoughts?
I really don't have problems with battery life at all. It lasts longer then my HTC Nexus One. I'm able to go from 8am-midnight under my normal usage of several calls, push emails, exchange, twitter widget, facebook widget, Weather widget, Kingdoms live and Word Feud, plus surfing and tweaking through out the day.
I really like the phone. My only gripe is the LCD backlight compared to the AMOLED, but I knew that going in.
HTC is locking their bootloaders like everyone else. Most phones with encrypted/signed bootloaders are still, to this day, locked down and unflashable.
The Samsung Galaxy S2 would be my second choice since the bootloader is unlocked and should be another one that is flashable. But we have absolutely no idea when it is coming out. I'm hearing September. It lacks the Tegra 2... which will burn as more and more Tegra 2 only games/apps start pouring in.
I say stay with the G2x. Aside from the backlight bleed, every other issue is just software. The Official Gingerbread rom will be out very soon and it should hopefully take care of more of our problems.
Aside from the Official build, we already have CM7 hot in the mix and I believe they will have the phone running great within a week or two.
If you are really worried about it, couldn't you just do a return... then pick up another one that has another 14 days?
I returned mine. I only purchased to give the network a try and see if it works for me as I am currently a Verizon customer... so I kinda had to return it regardless.
I'm going to wait it out a bit. I have a Fascinate, and coming from a Galaxy S series phone, this phone was *almost* a lateral switch. There are many advantages this phone has over the original Galaxy S series, but I felt like I needed more. Maybe it was the same 4" screen size?
Overall, it's a nice phone. Build quality is excellent and it functions very well. The reboot issues didn't bother me too much, but the fact that the issues were there really made me a bit uncomfortable. Coming from a Samsung phone that had wacky software, the last thing I wanted was another phone sharing some of the qualities I did not like - bad code.
I think LG is in a position to fix their mistakes and make this phone a contender for long term support. They just have to follow it with their 2.3 update properly... I.E. no bugs!!!

I agree... I am keeping mine personally... I think this next update to 2.3 will have a nice new batch of drivers, specifically the tegra2 drivers since nvidia are driver freaks so I expect a performance boost via drivers as well as some fixes from LG such as the battery...
employees cant return phones, but i can warranty exchange
which i just did. at first i thought i could deal with the bleeding in the top left corner, but now on CM7 with the black statusbar, it is extremely noticeable even with the dimmest brightness setting. so i caved in and am getting a replacement sent to me.
now i gotta unroot and go back to stock. and theres no guarantee that the replacement will be any better, but it cant get much worse than the bleed on mine. looking at all the pics i seem to have one of the worst on here.
I'm leaning towards keeping it. I purchased two of them and my wife's has been just fine. I had the random reboots and exchanged mine. The new one has virtully no bleed and the reboots are gone. For anyone suffering from random reboots/shutdowns and lock ups, please exchange it. I thought I was just being paranoid, but my first one really had a problem. The new one is running like a champ.
The Sensation is tempting, but having to deal with a locked phone does not sound very fun at all. I know they will hack the loader eventually, but I really dislike having to deal with ads.
Six months from now there will be something cooler than the Sensation or G2x.
I think a lot of people are giving a little too much credit to LG for the Gingerbread update being the "magic wand" that will fix everything. Sure, it could but the cure all, BUT, if they hosed things up in Froyo, who's to say they didn't do the same (OR WORSE!) in Gingerbread?
Just saying!
It's a coin toss at the moment as to whether it's going to fix the problem or stay the same...
Guys, it's really simple. I'm going to the tmobile store the day the Sensation is released, and if it gives me that Nexus One feel in hand, I'm throwing the g2x on Ebay.
That's really all there is to it. Just keep your G2X protected until that point. By that time you could have it rooted with a stable CM7 release, upping the price a bit more. If the Sensation is $499 off contract as rumored, you should be able to get close to that.

Also consider the 02X has the same problems and was out six months before they released the G2X.

An HTC T-Mobile rep confirmed the pricing and the 6/8 launch date on the Sensation forum. They've already scheduled a big pre-launch party on 6/6.

G2X back in stock in mid July? Get Healthy?

I stumbled across this while looking at some other things and I saw on this list that the G2X (the third line) has a "get healthy" date of mid July. Does anyone know if by "get healthy" they mean inventory will be available or could that be an approx. update date?
http://www.tmonews.com/2011/06/t-mobile-g2-about-to-hit-end-of-life/
We have plenty of them in stock at our store.

my guess is once we get a working update, tmobile is going to re-launch the device and advertise it as coming stock with 2.3(.4?) rather than 2.2.2 like we have now... i just hope its sooner rather than later...
Yeah that's the same thing I'm thinking too. All of the tmobile employees that I've spoken to have all confirmed that the G2X does not have any inventory problems and that it was indeed pulled due to quality control issues. So I'm figuring that mid-july date, is when they anticipate having everything corrected and an update ready to go.
Got mine at Amazon. Ordered on Friday and was delivered today. They did raise the price by $50 though. Wasn't pleased but I had to have it.
Sooooo much better than my G2!!! I actually think I might have found the perfect phone.
That article is about the the G2, not the G2x. But I did see the reference to G2x about mid-july. I also see references to the Sidekick also, which is already out too right?
So I don't know what "Get Healthy" means but I don't know if it has anything to do with our actual phones and updates. Perhaps it is just sales classes or something.
I ordered mine on Tuesday night at wirefly. It was suppose to come today except stupid fedex decided to leave it at the hub for a while so hopefully it will be here tomorrow.

So question....even with the bad press about this device, you ordered it anyway. Why? Did the problems not bother you, or, are the problems only on certain or a small % of devices?
I've been around devices for a long time. All devices are problematic. But I have never had a device that was completely unusable, nor have I had a device that was not fixed within a few months.
Why would anyone intentionally order this device now?
...I ask because, I too ordered mine yesterday from Amazon, will be here monday.

The G2X has it's share of issues, but it is far from being unusable. The main issue as I see it is battery life and random reboots. I know from trying to the leaked gingerbread rom that the battery life is greatly improved on that rom, so I'm expecting that to be resolved with the gingerbread update. Hopefully they solve the random reboots also. I have used a few different G2X's and at the most I've had my phone reboot once per day, but usually it happens once every two or three days (which I can live with until it's resolved). As far as screen bleeding, I think that really is people being kind of nitpicky really. It isn't something that you can notice unless you set out to notice it (turn brightness all the way up in a dark room and look at a black screen). So I hardly see that as much of a real issue. Overall, I am pretty happy with the G2X other than the battery life (which will be improved after the update).
