Hi everyone. I went thru quite some posts but am still unsure because of the many different devices & models (I'm not sure if mine will work or not and I'm scared that I will brick it).
I hope someone can give more general advises like:
1. How do I know if I can root my device or not (be it 2.1 or 2.2 and etc...)?
(eg. a tool/app that we can download and run to get detail version/system info?)
2. How do I know if my device can be upgraded to 2.2 or not?
My device ... http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.47008
All I know is its 2.1. I would like to root it (so I can safely back it up b4 playing around with it) and to install apps in the SD card. Help?
I saw quite some threads on the how-to for the above but am not sure if my device is compatible with the methods. Thanks.

Information on my phone (this is information i found under Settings > About Phone)
Model Number: T-Mobile myTouch 3G
Firmware Version: 1.6
Kernal Version: [email protected] #19
Build Number: DRC92
I recently got this phone and have found out that, because I'm with T-Mobile, I will not be receiving a SenseUI update. I've breifly skimmed over threads about rooting, custom roms, etc, and it's all left me abit confused. So I'm hopeing someone can help claify something for me
1)What are the advantages to rooting your phone.
2) I'm concerned mostly about the speed of my phone. I hate it when I'm using the browser, then i back out to the homescreen and it takes like 5-10 secs to load the homescreen one icon at a time b/c it's lagging. What custom roms are there that are lightweight and speedy, but still provide great functionality
3) Can my phone be rooted? I've seen so many discussions saying the myTouch 3G cannot be rooted, and so many saying it could be. Then the ones saying it can be tell me that it should be the 1.5 firmware and I updated OTA to 1.6.
4) If i can root my phone, are there any easy to follow guides about this?
5) If I root my phone and it fails in the process, am I screwed (will i have a bricked phone)? Alternatlivly, if I root my phone and I don't like the changes and want to switch back to the original firmware, is this possible (will a backup be made of the original during the rooting process)?
6) If I can root my phone, is there a custom rom I can use with it that will have the SenseUI?
Thank you all for you time in advance. I apologize if these questions have been answered elsewhere and I missed them.
I suggest you read more on a basic forum if you are in the us go to
http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/Operating-System-Software/bd-p/AndroidDev
and read the stickies as they are easy to notice read those and the big read discretion notive and you'll be fine to ask questions after you use search that forum is easy to use nad has olt of people that are willing to help out... you posted this in the wrong area on this forum technically and will get flamed and laughed at for posting this lol
hi Dartvalince,
welcome. Your questions are actually all answered. Some are very easy to find here in this resourceful forum others are more or less scattered and kind a hard to figure out (especially if your are not a native english speaking person)...
1. with root you can do lots of things you cant while unrooted, like wifi tether full access to the filesystem and other more advanced stuff.
2. I only flashed cyanogen until now and its pretty fast and stable (faster than the stock rom). There are lots of other roms out there. Try them out to find one which suits you best.
3. Yes it can. However, there are more than one way to root and flash your device. It also depends on your spl (perfect spl?) how to do it. You can find out what spl you have if you enter fastboot (turn off device then press power and home to enter fastboot). You can also see if you have a magic 32a or 32b, which is needed for choosing a correct rom.
4. Jepp, there are lots of useful and easy to follow step by step tutorials here. Like this one for example:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=579328
5. Yes, there is a chance to brick your phone if you do something that you are not supposed to do like flashing a wrong radio or rom. If everything goes fine you can of course go back to the initial state (stock rom, spl. aso).
6. Yes, there are lots of custom roms with sense ui for magic. Just take a look into the rom development section of this forum...
That link is pretty much what i was looking for, thanks
Sorry for posting in the wrong section
Hi
I see alot of unanswered questions out there with regards to rooting the G1... as a last resort a new thread.
I have rooted my G1 (or so I thought) and some root apps work and others do not (do not have access) etc. I have followed all the instructions successfully from forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
Is there a definitive way of checking that root is applied? Do you have to follow the telnet instructions each time the phone is restarted?
I want to upgrade my g1 back to the latest version 1.6 . All I can find is RC8 modded (UK) which seems to be 1.4 or 1.5? Will I loose root access by upgrading and does someone have a link to a modded RC<latest version> update.zip ? Seems impossible to find anything newer that May last year but I had an update in Nov/Dec 09.
Some forums are saying that you can then store your apps on your SD card but do not have the instructions.. can someone point me in the right direction?
Help on any of the questions would great...
Thanks
Sorry for what must seem like stupid question, but haven't found this answered anywhere.
I've heard that OTA updates can block root avenues, so that means I should root as soon as I can, right?
But what I'm wondering is: Is Froyo a finished product, ready to use on any phone it is installed on (right specs of course)? Or does each phone manufacturer need to customize Froyo for their specific phone?
I can go to a computer parts store, and as long as I buy everything I need, I know I can install and run windows on it. Is Android the same way? Or do the manufacturers need to take "virgin" Android and plug it into their hardware?
I have an Epic, and while waiting for Cyanogen, I would like to install stock 2.2 right now. Can I do that? And have a fully functional phone?
Thanks to everyone here.
If you are upgrading to 2.2 from the manufacturer, you should be fine. There are still methods to root that. If it is a 2.2.1 upgrade I would hold out and wait for a 2.2[.1] ROM to be created for your device.
To answer your other question. There is the 2.2 user interface which is pretty portable and should work on any device. The KERNEL is NOT. And that is what needs to be developed for your device by the community before you can get real custom ROMs. Unfortunately these two things come hand in hand so you can't just put any 2.2 rom on your device. It needs to be "fitted" (as you put it) with the right Kernel (among other things). Because of the nature of that, some of the UI and other System code may also need to be changed for the device to function properly. Do NOT flash a ROM not listed for your device. If the ROM flashes both the recovery partition and the normal boot partition, your phone will most likely be bricked. Even if it doesn't it can still brick your phone.
what about apps to SD card
(Dcow90, thanks for the quick response )
I read that rooted 2.1 would allow this, is this correct? Rooting won't change anything on my phone, just the permissions, right? So I could root now and move my apps, and then upgrade once the kernal is out, yes?
Is there a tutorial on rooting anywhere on the site? A clear explanation of what it is and what it does? If not, there should be, I wouldn't have needed to post if there was.
Thanks again for all your help guys.
Good day to all,
First of all I don't know if it is legal for someone to pay someone for some help in these forums.
I apologize in advance if I happen to break any of the forum rules...
Well I'll get straight to the point.
I have a Coby Kyros 8042 running in 4.0.3 ICS
and all I want is to have Google Play running on my device.
As long as it is possible, is there a way to get GPlay running without installing custom ROM?
I do understand a bit of programmers language but I really don't understand how to use that ADB thing.
And besides, I don't want to brick my device.
I once had a tablet running in Froyo and successfully Rooted it with SuperOneClick.
But I have read that SuperoneOneClick ruins ICS. I have also read that LiveSuit destroys the device port
so I do not dare follow any processes that requires LiveSuit.
SO HERE'S THE GIST...
I will be willing to pay for someones services in helping me in finding
the safest and shortest way of getting GPlay running on my device.
If possible, without installing custom ROM.
Please leave full instructions and download links of anything that is needed in the process
and please post it here so that other people that have the same problem as mine could benefit from it.
And one more thing, the 8042 recognizes my SDcard as an EXTSD.
I want my device to recognize my SDcard as the SDcard not the external sdcard.
please spare me that info.
I am looking forward for your help guys, more power to XDA...
Hello!
I'm well aware that there are plenty of threads around which touch this topic. However, in my case many of them are unsatisfying. (I can't say all of them since there are too many!)
I've got a SWITEL S57D Samba running Android 4.2.2. There's almost nothing on XDA about my phone. I desperately want to have root on it and already tried some of the tools which are supposed to root "(almost) any" device, such as Framaroot and Towelroot... but with no success. I'm yet to try Kingo Android Root or some of the countless other tools but I somehow feels as if I'm wasting my time if I don't properly know what to look for.
Have I missed a tool which can root literally ANY device?
How to determine which tool/method will root my device? (for a device that is never listed in any compatibility list since it's uncommon)
What could be indicators? (Android version, HW chip, Stock ROM, ...?)
If there are no FAQs or Tools available for my device, how can I get around to rooting my phone by myself?
What do I need to achieve in general? (run process as root? add user to group? set file permissions? ...?)
What reading material is out there?
What is the expected amount of time needed for a tech-savvy person which knows how to hack Linux?
Are there devices which can't be rooted?
I'm looking forward to insightful answers. Cheers!
So it turns out that Kingo Root was able to root my phone!!! (even though it was displayed as a HTC device)
It went to fastboot and my Win7 didn't recognize my android device anymore... I had to select the driver from the list "ASUS->Composite ADB driver". Then it all went fine.
Still it would be nice to get an answer for the questions I've asked in my previous post!
