Hi everyone - long time lurker, first time poster here. Anyway, I've been wracking my brain over this for some time and haven't been able to find an answer at all, so I apologize if my search skills aren't up to par.
Anyway, I've got a samsung captivate and I've successfully rooted and installed a few Froyo ROMs without issue (Cognition, Axura, etc). The problem Im encountering is that whenever I try to connect to my PC (4 different PC's actually - all some variant of windows 7 32 or 64 bit) in MTP mode, the Captivate shows up in the device manager as SAMSUNG_ANDROID with an exclamation point saying that the device could not be started.
My ultimate goal here is to sync the items with Windows Media center, because I create and update a lot of playlists and such on my HTPC, of which I'd like to keep up to date on my phone.
When I use the stock ROM, it works flawlessly - no issues at all
I've tried the following:
1. Search for files with extensions over 16 digits - nada
2. Tried using Kies, no luck at all there.
3. Various driver updates from various sources
4. Removing / unmounting my external SD card
Copying the files over manually works, but that doesn't give me playlists
Doubletwist really isnt an option, because it will only sync with the internal card, not the 32 gb external.
If anyone has ever gotten this to work, I'd be forever grateful.

You have a few different issues listed:
1. Playlist sync support doesn't work with the native player. Period. It stores all playlists in a database - Even Kies doesn't sync playlists.
2. Internal vs. External storage sync is dependent on software - some apps have no idea that there are 2 storage locations and pick the first.
As for getting MPT to work - I have had driver issues, and the solution was to uninstall everything - drivers and Kies, reboot and only install one driver. Since Froyo is not official - you have a 50/50 chance - either Captivate, or generic Samsung for all phones. I would try the captivate driver.
One other thing to look at - media monkey - it will sync to any SD card - you can pick the one - so you don't need MPT mode.
Yeah, I use the doubletwist App as my player - that reads WMP's playlists perfectly. As for the syncing, it's pretty much gotta be windows media center or nothing. I just love plugging it in and letting it auto-sync. Like I said, the stock firmware works perfectly for this (But sucks otherwise - hence why I root & update).
OK, I misunderstood - I was thinking Doublestwist desktop. I can't remember if MediaMonkey supports autosync - I think it does, but like I said it can do MTP or direct to SD - so very flexible. I bet it uses the same playlists (m3u i think).
Actually, I just tried your advice and uninstalled samsungs drivers completely and rebooted. It worked flawlessly, Im syncing now. Who'da thunk samsung's drivers would turn out to be the issue? Thanks so much dude, you rock.
Glad to help... I ran into wierd issues with Kies, Kies mini, and 3 sets of drivers installed... that fixed it for me, so it couldnt hurt you.

Hi!
New to this forum and new to the wonderful world of Windows Mobile.
Coming from a palm-world where most things just tend to work, this has been somewhat of a reminder of the early Windows desktop days.
I'm having some issues (One of these issues made me choose this forum, if this was in error, I apologize in advance).
1. Active sync worked once, but never again.
It seems the mp3-files I added (251 of them), makes active sync just time-out in the media stage. I have not found a way to remove media from active sync either to confirm this. I cannot access settings since it times out with the sync. Edit: The media-row in the active-sync window also states that the installation has to be completed first. Which it already has.
2. Media player does not add files to library.
I do the file-search and it finds 251 files on the SD-card, makes a slight paus and finds 4 more files. Then it adds only those 4 files. accessing the storage card in the library and my music only produces an unexpected error. I have not tried to empty and reformat, or a lower file-count just yet. But to me this seems like a bug that not only scans the storage-card but also the device and then only adds what's on the device. What is added is 4 ring-tones.
3. A2DP...
Well, I read the instructions on the two threads dedicated to this, but it does me no good since I find no files in either of them. I am willing to host those files for you if needed by the way. I really want A2DP since I already got the Jabra BT-620s.
4. Not a real important one but, overclocking.
I ran the OMAP_TI_Overclock thingie, but absolutely nothing changes. Still 195 Mhz whatever I do. I find people have fall-backs in a few minutes or after reset, but this is immediate. The utility says it sets the clock and that the current clock has changed, but as soon as I go to the system-info it says 195. And starting the utility again it says it set as 180 (which according to the system obviously equals 195 ).
These are the current obstacles to overcome before I turn to media-control from the headset, and other more daily handling stuff that obviously already works fine (Voice-control, and contacts and stuff)
There was something more, but I forgot. I'll return to that. Now I'm off to the golf course hoping for some good advice to start pouring in...
Best Regards
Bo Eriksson
1. Buy a card-reader. They're cheap and save your nerves as AS 4.1 is EXTREMELY unstable comparing to 3.8 one
2. Dunno.
3. Try reading again. Works just fine
4. In the ABOUT info you'kk never see the change as it's not a monitor of CPU but the info contained like plain TXT. as for the program use action-set clock - and then action-exit. If you do load it before you turn Prophet off you'll see the clock is still in there
About #1:
Yes, I have several. More than I have computers actually, which is a lot!
Not that more helps in this case. I got my S200 Yesterday so I am really only starting out to get things going. This is just my initial small problems. I just find it frustrating that I cannot change what will be synced with Active sync until a sync is successfully completed, which is never. So We'll see how I solve that one...
About #4:
Is there a real system info utility around?
About #3:
I am sure it works fine. I just cannot find the needed files. They're nowhere around for download. At least not in the threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=43992&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=225
And:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=275438#275438
So if you know where they are (Especially the one talked about in the first thread), please direct me towards them.
Best regards

1. I just mean uploading thru AS WAS ALWAYS laggy and still is unles you do upload small files.
4. Why would you want one, you just see it working faster.
3. I attached both files zipped for you.
Ok, I got A2DP working now, Great, and thanks. I didn't realize the files only were visible while logged in , yup real newbie-alert .
And I installed Resco Explorer to do things more easily.
What remains is the problem with my Media library.
I cannot fathom what's going on. It's like this. I have 221 files on the storage card, and the system has 4 on the device itself. It scans both and lists 225 as found, then it takes a good 3 minutes adding files. Then it reports 4 files added. And only the library on my device shows anything (The four ringtones) trying to access the storage card library only results in an error.
Still, I can just click any of the files in the explorer and it plays perfectly (now in glorious wireless stereo!)... So there's nothing wrong with the card and the files. It's just the Library update thingy that fails me.
Best Regards
Bo Eriksson
I solved the Media Library thing.
I started deleting albums and doing new updates, but still no luck even down to one single MP3. So then I remembered something someone said in a thread somewhere about the MSMETADATA folder containing the library, so I simply removed it from the storage card and updated the library again. Voila! Now it works!
From now on I will only add a smaller number of files at a time, doing new library updates...
So now it's only the Active Sync problem remaining.
I just can't get it to work anymore. I tried reinstalling it late yesterday, but no luck...
Best Regards

Start with this for drivers:
http://androidforums.com/samsung-captivate/123644-captivate-usb-drivers-links-here.html
And look through this if you have problems:

[edit]
Oh, and as far as I know there's no "iTunes" for Android so try this:
http://www.simplehelp.net/2009/07/29/how-to-copy-music-to-your-android-phone-from-windows/
thx!!! it helped a lot. Was more complicated than what i thought. Wasnt just download the driver but go to some options on my cell phone, pick usb mass storage the mount option n stuff like that but finally worked! xD
I might come up with some more questions tho.. till then!
i've heard a lot of people talk about double twist.
http://www.doubletwist.com/dt/Home/Index.dt
Id defineatly recommend double twist. Its really easy to use and I love that I can drag and drop videos into it and it will automatically convert it to the correct file type no matter what phone im using.
Also syncing play lists is really easy

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Samsung has an app called Kies. For some reason it's hidden from the US however I was assured that downloading it from here: http://www.samsung.com/ae/consumer/...XSG/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&tab=support
Will work just the same.

I downloaded kies as u said but its not working with my captivate for some reason. Says "Reconnect the device on Samsung Kies(PC Studio) mode. Kies doesn't support this connect mode"
Don't mess with kies, just use drag and drop for simplicity.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Drag and drop is always easy, but Kies isn't bad for media management (also enables tethering if you select it under Settings->Applications->USB Settings) - you can find it here: http://www.all-samsungphones.com/samsung-wave-s8500-software-kiespc-sync-download.html/
I use Double Twist for my mac (just make sure for windows you have the drivers, you have the USB debugging active, and then you mount the drive) but i loved it. it transfered very easily. I was actually able to port over my itunes play lists and copy my old iphone playlist to my phone.
Ok, so i got my captivate and doubletwist on my mac and for the life of me my playlists in itunes will not show up on the phone. Only the songs show up is there a way to get the playlists in itunes to show up on the phone?
the playlists are in my phone. it is an m3u file, right?
other than that, i have no clue. I really don't have a use for play lists, I only put what songs I want in my playlist and sync it.
yes they are set as m3u and ive placed them in several locations on the phones memory but they will not show up on the phone its self only way i can get a playlist on there is to create one from the phone and thats kinda lame
I just purchased an HTC Titan with mango. This device is incredible but I have a problem when I put a lot of data on it.
Initialy the Titan has 11.5 GB of free space. When I sync it (on Mac OS) with more than ~7.5 GB, the device reboots then the Windows Live and Google profiles (mail) are lost. After that I'm unable to recreate the Live account so I have to format it.
The shop told me that it was because I synchronised it with WP7 Connector on Mac OS. After a couple of days, the guy accepted to replace the faulty device with a new one.
So, I plugged my new Titan on my Windows 7 computer and I had the same problem.
The titan has been updated with the version 7740.16
Anyone of you has an idea to help me ?
I have a Titan which is constantly full of various media and other rubbish. I mean totally full, with 0Mb available (e.g. I have to remove podcasts manually to create space for new editions and often have a queue waiting).
I don't however have your problem. I use Zune on Windows 7 to sync.
Why don't you try syncing on a Windows machine to test whether Mac is a factor with this problem?
@nobut,
I sync my new device exclusively with Windows and I have the same problem. I did a lot of tests and the problem is not a specific file.
In that case all I can think is that it could be a setting on either your device, or in Zune which causes this.
Can you replicate the problem? I mean if you remove all of the files from your device, does this lack of functionality return? If the answer is yes, then there is a problem with your device. If the answer is no, then I honestly have no idea, but this is a weird problem which appears to happen only during, or after the syncing process... hence my thoughts about a setting which is causing the trouble.
It makes no sense to me though.
Yes, I'm able to replicate problem. I also tried to restore it to factory default.
I don't understand why I had this issue on 2 different devices with 2 different OS (Mac and 7).
So, the most logical answer is: the content I put in the device is the problem.
But it sounds crazy as the device doesn't crash every time on the same content.
That is one annoying problem. I can't think of anything you could try other than turning off sync altogether and moving stuff manually using Zune.
I sync stuff manually and subscribe to podcasts from the device, rather than from Zune. I haven't suffered your problem, but I didn't have this problem when I used to allow automatic syncing either.
I had a confirmation from HTC that this kind of problem exists for Mac Users. As my files are shared on a NAS, maybe my stuff is the problem because of the Mac OS hidden files. Anyway, thanx for your help

mmm, no. a file is a file is a file. if other devices can handle it, your phone should too. pushing 4Gb, 8Gb, or 200Gb should not make the phone restart, ever, no matter where the files come from.
@ohgood, I know that an I totally agree. But as the HTC guy told me, it's an unidentified bug with mac on the titan and I'm not the only one to have it.
(deleted post)
Coming from Windows Mobile (I-Mate PDA2k, HTC Touch Cruise, HTC Diamond2)
I've always been able to
1. Sync my Phone (Contacts, Calender, etc)
2. Access my Storage (Internal and SD Card)
3. Share Internet (Internet Pass-Through)
4. Charge my phone
at the same time.
Now I bought myself the Sensation XE and found out that when I connect the phone to my computer, I can do only one of the first 3 options mentioned at any given time. That is 1, 2 or 3, which isn't as good as what I could do on WM (1, 2 and 3 same time)
So I was wondering if there is anyway to set up the phone or my computer or if there is any program or app I could use to enable all those options at the same time (sync my phone, access the storage and use the internet from my computer)
I hope there is a solution to my problem else I would be pretty disappointed with HTC constant habit to disappoint me and Android on the whole
Off the topic, previously when on Windows Mobile, I had the Windows Media Player which had the "Now Playing" list to which I could ADD songs to it or REMOVE songs from it.
Now on both the default Music Player and the PowerAMP there doesn't seem to be such feature and so I was wondering if there is any music player app available that has a Now Playing list with options to add/enqueue songs to the Now Playing list and also option to remove songs from the list
I am aware that I can create a playlist, however some days I want some specific songs and other days I want only a few of those songs.
can anyone help?

Hi,
I used to have HD2 WinMo,and when I found Android could go on the phone,I never looked back.
Considering how much better Android is than WinMo,you should be able to live with the very few parts of WinMo that are no longer available in Android.
I'm on ARHD ICS 6.0.0,and my stock music player has a "queue" system which you can edit(add music etc.)
HTC Sync is one of the few things that bugs me about Android.
You will find yourself installing/uninstalling it a lot!
While it is synching,it does charge as well, but that's as close as you will get to the original.
Good luck.
I'm not aware of software PC side which does this
regarding sync'ing the easiest solution is to use Google services - that way calendar, email, contacts etc - all sync all the time - usb, wifi, 3G - you simply stop thinking about them frankly as it all happens automatically
hope this helps
Shaun
Thanks for helping out both of you
I guess now I have a different issue
I've started syncing everything with Google and so the Sync part is dealt with
I'm getting an unlimited data plan so the Internet Pass-Through is also dealt with
However now I notice if I mount the SD card into the PC, it becomes unavailable on the phone (if you know any solution to make the SD card available on both places at once, please let me know)
Regarding the music player, I think I will have to wait for the official ICS to release, the phone is less than a month old so I don't want to try weird stunts on it.
anyways thanks once again

Hi,
In terms of the sd card,it can only work in one place at a time.
Hence the option in Settings/storage to unmount the card,so that you can also remove it while the phone is on.
My husband attempted to connect his Tab 2 7.0 to our desktop computer which runs Xubuntu 12 only to find he cannot transfer music or video files to the tab. I ran across the "[GUIDE] How to transfer files in Linux" thread, forwarded it to him, and he followed the directions given. Everything appears to have gone smoothly during the process, however Linux is still not recognizing the tablet or the tablet gives a (vague) error. We never had this trouble using the Samsung Galaxy Player as it would simply connect and we were good to go. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. If I need to give more details, let me know! Sorry if I am not providing enough information to start with.

I would suggest reading this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728486
Since ICS and Jelly Bean no longer support USB Mass Storage for file transfer (replaced by MTP) file transfers between Linux and ICS/JB are a little harder at the moment. I run Fedora 17 and am not able to drag/drop files from my PC to my tablet. Until the kinks are worked out I'm using scp to copy files. I installed "DropBear SSH Serfver" from the market, which is a good SSH server.
There is a tool called 'gmtp' that is a GNU/Linux UI for MTP-Filetransfer. It does not always connect to the tablet, though. But when it does, it works like a charm.
Ah... if you disable ADB, gmtp should more realibly connect to the tablet.
I'm currently trying out ADBFS.
I'm a little disappointed with the decision to move to MTP, but I understand why they did it. In order to allow you to mount as mass storage, it has to first unmount the flash, which can cause issues if events come in and sounds (which exist on the flash) need to be played, etc.
Honestly, I just use a cheap NAS at home and use Astro to transfer files to and from it. I don't need to worry about cables this way.
