[Q] Safe way to update to 2.2 in Galaxy S? - General Questions and Answers

Hi all,
Please excuse lack of knowledge/understanding, very new to all this. I have a samsung galaxy S i9000 (in Australia, with Optus). They've notified us all that we can update to Android 2.2 through Kies. However I'm reading a lot of reports about people connecting their phones to Kies, running the update and coming out with bricked phones. Does anyone know why this happens and if there's anything that can be done (other than not running the update) to prevent this? Are there some settings I nee to change on my phone before running it?
Thanks,
Sarah

Hello,
I have flashed my phone about a week ago and all is OK! Just do what Kies says and don't disconnect anything or turn ON/OFF while flashing Kies will do all the things for you. So don't be afraid and just hold your phone stronger in your hand and all would be just fine

Thanks for the reply mrwadim - so do you think the people who have had bricked phones out of it have done something like turn them on/off or something?
Did you have anything other than the default optus software on your phone when you updated through kies?

Diamond_dawg, what does OTA mean? How can I avoid bricking when upgrading?

OTA == Over The Air

Know I know in canada, that same phone models froyo update has been pulled off of kies because it was causing inaccessible internal storage errors. The model is the i9000m

Uhhh, you are about 1 week to late for this information. Thanks though.
I was rooted, no lagfix when I tried to update. It got to 100% then it said failed. My baseband says I897UCJH7. Kernel 2.6.29 [email protected] #2.
Did the update work or not?
Flashman, how did your OTA update go? Any issues us rooted/unlocked folks should be worried about?
My instinct is to delay the update until I stop seeing posts about hot it F'd up people's phones.

If you rooted and removed anything from stock rom, you're pretty much guaranteed to fail on OTA update. In order to make the OTA download package as small as possible, Samsung uses a diff patch based on the bit differences between stock JF6 image and new JH7 image. So, if you touched the JF6 in any unauthorized way, the patch won't work.
Luckily, you can now use the newly released Kies Mini to do a full ROM update which should be more reliable as you have the entire ROM image downloaded to your desktop and then flash to your phone.

Quoted by Samsung "The program can report this message if it detects a software build other than the official launch software of JF6."
You need to FLASH STOCK JF6 using ODIN ONE CLICK, Follow this Guide:

If my settings say i'm at JH7, does that necessarily mean the OTA update was completely successful? It reached 100% then said failed.

What do you mean removed anything from stock rom? I rooted and removed a bunch of the bloatware and did an OTA update with no issues.
I failed along with most other rooted and flashed guys. Luckily I didn't brick my phone in the process. I will wait until some beret update comes along before trying anything ota again.
Sweet life
Nevermind, I guess it didn't update fully cause some of the implemented changes aren't there. I really didn't want to have to run a master clear and have to reinstall all my stuff.

Do you have TouchWiz as your default launcher? and make sure you're on your home screen when you connect your USB cable.
If that doesn't do it you need to get back to JF6 only way or another because Mini Kies will continue to tell you that you have an "unregistered" device until it is at JF6
The reason is because your update failed partially :/
are you guys talking about a new update or just JH7?
We're talking about JH7, some people are still having difficulties getting it on their phone as the OTA is still failing - and if you've failed the OTA you need to reflash to stock before mini kies will work.
when i did the update i was rooted an it didn't fail on install or bootup or anything.
but then again i'm just rooted and nothing else has been touched.

Exactly, I don't think root causes any issues. I was able to check for update on a rooted ROM.
It's when you have a custom kernel etc.

Not really. AT&T has said that the real update will be sent out via SMS text message link, not through the "update software" menu in android.
Engadget just had that yesterday.

Kies Mini JH7 Update

Ok
finally got Kies Mini recognizing my captivate again and trying to update to official jh7 with it.
(Had previously been getting unregistered or not recognize)
Sees there JH7 update when it goes to install says i "am not connected to internet" when i clearly am.
anyone experienced this and/or been able to resolve it?

it happened on mine all the time ( spent sometimes flashing back n forth ). i just keep trying until it starts downloading. nothing special, it's just the damn Kie.
have tried everything but unrooting but thought you could update via kies when rooted.
uninstalled kies (both mini and full) and reinstalled mini.
going to try again if that doesn't work may unroot and retry.

Being rooted should make no difference. Wouldn't surprise me if AT&T servers are overwhelmed with people checking everyday for a Froyo update that we clearly won't get until next year.

Let me rephrase that, if we don't see it by next week I doubt we'll see it until next year. Last thing AT&T wants to do is push an update that causes troubles during the holiday season when most of it's work force is out on holiday.
Just my 2 cents.
I agree. It would not surprise me if they pushed the update out in Jan. Guess Canada gets it before USA. Hurray for time wasting lock down of the OS update.

Yeah just use the vibrant drivers and enabe usb debug mode.
The step by step guide on how to update your phone is on the first page of the thread titled "sidekick 4g."
Hmm, I'm interested in this.. any other input? I might hook mine up to see.
Sent from my Sidekick 4G using XDA app
for some reason when i put it in kies mode it says my device isn't supported (with debugging off) but when ever i turn usb debugging on it connects as mass storage with out an option for kies mode and then kies say my device isnt in the proper mode
Due to the lack of of an answer I am going to create a comprehensive tutorial on how to install the necessary drivers to recognize your device, and update it if so feel so inclined. It was actually extremely easy. This is going to be a video, and I am going to post it as a new thread.
To satisfy any curiosities I want to perform a full dump of this firmware before I update.

lol if im correct youtube takes some time to render and process the video before it can be watched in its best res. i can watch your video now in 720p i think you just had to give it some time lol so no stress. but thanks for the vid im checking it out now
okay.. i think this thread was a mistake or i read it wrong .
first off i wasnt connecting to kies correctly because i wasnt using samsung kies mini i was using samsung kies.
second the firmware update you are talking about was updating your version of kies it wasnt updating your phone. the version of kies mini that you say to download in the video wasnt the latest kies mini so it updated when you first opened it (same for myself) now that its updated and i have kies open it says there is no upgrade available for my device.
if by some chance kies did update your phone check to see if the build is still KD1 , if it isnt then your phone was upgraded. not likely though
hope this helps and no need to get a dump if your still on stock, but thanks still.
does anyone know how to use the emergency firmware recovery feature in KIES? it seems to ask for some kind of code. I was wondering if by any chance this could be a way to restore your phone to factory stock?

ICS update in Singapore.

My question may sound foolish but here it is.
I have Galaxy R with me on stock 2.3.4. Never rooted or installed any sort of ROMs.
If I carry this phone to Singapore and try to update OTA, will I be able to update to ICS as I see ICS Stock ROM for Singapore already released.

Also, our phone does not get updates with respect to our geographical location.. If you purchased your phone in India, you will have an indian rom by default and kies will search for an update to that rom.. So even if you take your phone to hong Kong or Taiwan it will not update if ics for India is not available...
Since ics is out for india, you can go ahead and update with kies as suggested by mj.vikram buddy

New firmware found.
Firstly I was shocked to see this new firmware on kies. All these days I was checking on Kies(Mac version) and didn't find any update.
(I am on GB 2.3.5. Never did any customizations on my phone, no rooting, no infected ROM. Nothing. It is as same as it was when I took it)
Now, I find this firmware update on KIES (Windows version) and wanna know if I can go ahead and update this firmware?? Is there any side effect of doing this?
Some one says you cannot factory reset after this firmware. Someone says, nothing would happen.
I am confused. Please help.
P.S: I am newbie and have no clue about CWM or eMMC brick or kernal

Did anybody else receive an OTA this morning?

Bought my GS4 yesturday, this morning around 10am i got an OTA that was about 28mb. Not sure what that OTA did because i cant find any change log anywhere or anybody else talking about it...does anybody know anything?
Build Number is JDQ39.I337MVLUAMDL
On Rogers in Canada
You should probably have put down Rogers on the thread title. I didn't receive anything but I am no AT&T. But one more thing, I was talking in this other thread with the Canadian carrier guys. Is your Contacts and phone app white or black / blue?
Even though I'm on AT&T, I am happy for Rogers customers. Can anyone elaborate on what this update does? Hopefully it addresses the lag?
On US AT&T and no OTA. I wouldn't download any OTA's though just in-case they address the hacked bootloader.
@geoldr: The OTA was launched by Samsung globally.
Good to see you again P-Pat! I got the notification, but rooted before installing in case there was patch to stop root. After I tried to install and it said my phone has been modified and updates are not available. I am now searching to figure out how to install this....

From what I have read, so far it has been launched on Sprint, Rogers and the international version. I am sure AT&T will come soon. Samsung launches the updates, but the carriers distribute them...that is why Android version updates have different timing for different carriers.

Somewhere I read they can force push security updates onto the phone without you even having to accept it. This is something I think they would do over the bootloader to prevent people from stopping the patch.

not always, i received 2 updates on the GS3 that were released from sammy and did not go through carrier testing, unless they did it so uniformly that it didnt seem like it, but then again, telus and bell got it the same day rogers did, but those updates were stability and securtiy related, they didnt bring any features, so i guess it really depends on what the updates changes
This link confirms what David Dee was saying, it also matches my build number and size of update
