what is a modem - Captivate General

I looked all over and even looked at the thread where the links are to download the modems and I still have no clue what it is or what it does for the phone. I have a captivate but can someone elaborate on what a modem is ?

i'll second this question.. i will admit i haven't checked google or wiki

It's what makes your phone a phone. Provides mobile Internet and the like.

I don't know any of this for sure... but after perusing the forum for a few months now, I think this the following is true:
ROM: The main OS running on the phone.
Kernel: The OS layer that communicates/controls to the hardware.
Modem: The software that runs the modem hardware. Modem hardware/software is what provides the datalink.
All - PLEASE correct me if this is wrong.

Modem - short for MOdulate DEModulate. Converts audio to digital (either direction).
I guess you guys never had a dial-up line. You know the sound a fax machine makes with all the screeches and chirps? It is taking digital bits and using frequency and time modulation to create all these weird sounds to send that data over a voice line.
Your cell phone has to take your voice digitize it and send it over digital lines. The Modem software handles the radio for doing all this and all the data communication.

So "Modem" for Samsung is the same thing as "Radio" for HTC phones.

Exactly. I don't know why they call em modems here, and when u go to phone settings>about it's called baseband.

i spoke to haykuro earlier and asked about the issues keeping us from getting root on rogers devices. he told me that the boot.img tells the bootloader to boot from a specific memory offset. this is in lines 166 - 173
Code:
166 hdr.kernel_addr = 0x10008000;
167 hdr.ramdisk_addr = 0x11000000;
168 if(saddr) {
169 hdr.second_addr = 0x00300000;
170 } else {
171 hdr.second_addr = 0x10F00000;
172 }
173 hdr.tags_addr = 0x10000100;
now the problem is that the radio on the rogers devices (3.22.20.17) changes the offsets and so we need to figure them out so that a boot.img can be created that will work with our radio.
don't forget if you like what he is doing for us to donate some nesquick

I do hope this effort succeeds; it would be my very first cell phone that I can tweak to my heart's content.
My biggest requirement is tethering, but of course there are others. I also hear that tethering might be possible without even rooting, using PDANet from June Fabrics.

PDANet looks like a decent idea (although I've read people have had state issues and client resets). I just want autonomy over my device if possible AND still have it work on my network lol ... I also don't run Windows anywhere except on one of my 200+ work machines (I'm a Midrange guy) so I need tethering to work on Linux and MacOSX ... plus then I can update My damn Wiki with some different content

That shouldn't make much of a difference. Is there any other chips that are different? I would be more interested in the chips that control the radio frequencies. I'm starting to believe that these are firmware controlled by a variable frequency generator.
I can imagine that this is possible because it personnally would make no sense to create a different phone for every market. Just use a different firmware to change the phone frequency.
UPDATE - Nevermind. After looking closer the main Qualcomm chip is also different. This probably controls the frequency.

once again it has to do with the amplifiers' frequency.
look at this pic: http://i.cmpnet.com/eetimes/news/online/2008/10/igoogle_2.jpg
then look at my pics and compare the two amplifiers. different model. look up the model numbers, different frequencies. if you take a closer look you will see the antenna switch chip is also for different frequencies, plus there are way too many differences on the radio board (resistors/capacitors)
also take a look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=525060
Interestingly, that Qualcomm RTR6285 transceiver looks like it probably CAN do the full range of 3G frequencies, see the datasheet at: http://www.datasheetpro.com/268132_download_RTR6285_datasheet.html
What I have been wondering for a few days is what would happen if someone took the RADIO rom from a Canadian Rogers Dream and used it to flash their T-Mobile G1 - would that unlock the right frequencies in the phone? After having seen the datasheet, and notwithstanding the slight differences in transceiver numbers, I can't see why not.
well i promise to try with my old t-mobile G1, when we get the radio...
I have nothing to do with it anyways

I'm confused as heck. I have been looking around for an hour and can't find an answer. Will the D2G work with AT&T in the US?
It wont work on any US simcard/carrier other than verizon as carriers use a specific network ID which has been blocked on the droid 2 global (att, tmobile, etc.) However, I've seen people post that theres a workaround to this but there's a price for that and you've also got to send them your phone I believe.

It is a software only mod.
It is definitely NOT a hardware modification. The reason we need the phone is because it involves flashing a special file to the radio image.

Why Does A Lower Spec HTC One S Outclass My SGS3 on Internet?

I ask this here as I've already asked on the Samsung Galaxy S3 forum with no answers. I'm guessing there are more teccy types here! Okay, getting p*issed now. I have a brand new Samsung Galaxy S3 and my friend's HTC One S is FAR faster on the internet than my handset. Both handsets came from 3UK (network locked & branded) on the same plan (The One Plan). The tests were done with the same sim so it's not the sim card-definitely the handset. Also, of course, they were done in the exact same location at the same time.
My previous SGS2 compared like my current handsset with his HTC but I assumed that was because the HTC had more up to date components and getting the all new SGS3 would solve. Obviously not!!!
I have looked at the settings and I can't see anything I can change. Can any of the wizards here shed some light?

Look, dude. Your browser's speed is a combination of three things.
1) Hardware - including processor, memory and radio/modem.
2) ISP - This speaks for itself
3) Software - Poorly written software will load and display a page slowly. Herein lies your answer, I'm guessing.
Root and flash away. That's how you fix that.
I own neither handset, but basic logic leads me to this conclusion. That said, I may be wrong.

How much faster? Seconds? Minutes?
I would test accessing at same place, same time on the same Wifi and using same browser to get a baseline. Testing on mobile signal is just too unpredictable.

Both of these people mention key points about your data speed tests. Testing two different devices that are performing the same task is about all those devices have in common. You need some intersecting properties between the two devices. Yes, their os may be the same but are they even running the same version? They are different makes, HTC vs. Samsung, using different browsers plus more.
You can test over and over to see which comes out on top. But you won't know why until you find out what the differences and similarities are between the two devices to see why you're getting the results you've been getting. Hope this helps.

[Q] How do I port a Modem/ radio?

Hey guys I got a I727 but I live in Brazil.
I am having a lot of issues with the connectivity here.
I tried a lot of combos ( roms / kernels / radios / SIM cards) and it still acting randomly. Sometimes it works for days and it makes me believe that I got it fixed, sometimes for hours on even less than that. I've trying almost everything.
I know we can use radios from t989 and blaze's and note but all I got here in the forum was from Canadian or American devices.
So my next attempt is to try to port a radio optimized for my country from a device that is similar to the i727.
Does anyone have an idea of how to port radios? I want to use one optimized to use my country's frequencies.
Thanks in advance guys.
And please take easy on me, I m just a newbie

Sammy = Samsung.... Its a common nickname
Some SR users USE blaze or T989 radios as is (so they can use their phones on T mobile) ... Those are never tweaked radios and nobody can

Never mess up with things like radio...you might easily end up bricking your phone or messing the IMEI number which is at least a pain in the ass to fix...you can just use (flash) things that are commonly known to work with your skyrocket (learn here)..And talking about t989 radio in a skyrocket , never think it works right..expect ton of problems in connectivity.. But at least you can run t mobile on SR (even though very buggy) !

The chipset isn't the mainboard "brain"? If I do an analogy with PC, main boards controls everything and a modem is just a PCI card controlled by the motherboard. If so, that does not mean that my radio is actually the same but that the brain is. Maybe the way that the modem communicate with the motherboard is standard?
If so I will look up to some Sam modem for a phone from here that got the Qualcomm MSM8260 Snapdragon chipset, and then I will try to flash it.
Im aware that Sony got some models here, but I not as much crazy to flash their modems

You do realize that every single thing done on this entire website incurs a risk of bricking, right? It's his own responsibility to know that, not your responsibility to shove it up his butt. He's trying to figure something out to make his device better for him, which it sounds like he knows the risks of, and which is also the whole point of this website. If you have no useful advice to offer, don't talk.

T-mobile HD Audio Codec [SOLVED]

Hello all!
As you may know. T-mobile is the first carrier offering support for HD audio and I'm stoked. :laugh: Only within certain high end phones though.
Question is can we get HD audio on the skyrocket since it can run on T-mobile 4G and only a codec is necessary? Any other limitations?
***Also seems an audio codec AMR-WB is necessary. anyway to get around that codec? could a software update do it? an awesome XDA app maybe?
Here's my source (http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/04/how-hd-voice-works-to-make-your-calls-clearer/)
amongst many other articles on the web.
Thanks in advance! All well thought input is appreciated and expected
EDIT! [POTENTIAL SOLUTION]
I've learned that the app "Pimp My ROM" allows you to enable or disable AMR-WB! To confirm this working I need someone to test it, post your results!. Here's what you have to do::
1. Be unlocked and rooted (of course)
2. Insert a working tmobile Sim.
3. NETWORK REQUIREMENT Have to have service above **edge/2G!! you could try anyway lol
** Means you need 3G service or faster.
4. Install, Pimp My ROM and enable AMR-WB.
4. Make a call to someone who you know has a phone which is HD audio capable, they must meet the same network requirements.
For reference this is what HD audio sounds like http://www.dialogic.com/en/solutions/mobile-vas/hd-voice.aspx
One is regular the other is HD sound.
Hit Thanks if this works or at least helps!
EDIT #2
I have concluded from reviewing skyrocket spec sheets and reading up on audio codecs that the skyrocket does not have the proper audio codec built in which I learned is a requirement.
So disregard this very very hopeful thread lol I will consider this solved :/

I poked around a little more btw what you want is AMR-WB. I've seen a few posts that it can be enabled on the S2 kindof sortof by adding ro.ril.enable.amr.wideband=1 in the build.prop. This might be a case where you'll need to play with radio's and ril binary files. it also sounds like there's not a good way to tell if wideband is in use :/.
