Since this has been an ongoing problem, I thought it would be best to create a bounty to solve this issue once and for all. Many of us with CyanogenMod 6.1 love the feel of AOSP apps and Cyanogen's subtle improvements. For those who aren't aware, some people have issues with sending oversized SMS messages on CDMA networks (like Sprint, for example). Currently, the only real solution to this is to install a third party messaging app like Handcent which has the option of splitting text messages when they are longer than 160 characters.
That is why I created this pool, to make an incentive for some talented coder to add 160 character splitting to the MMS.apk found in CyanogenMod.
https://github.com/CyanogenMod/android_packages_apps_Mms (Source for MMS.apk)
http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod/issues/detail?id=1942 (Issue about 160 character bug)
To collect on this bounty, you do need to submit the fix to CM's github and post an apk with working 160-split.

I don't think he is talking about a "fix" he is talking about someone submitting the fix to cm's git so the problem is done for good.
I can't even get a third party app to handle over 160 characters
I am down for at least 5-10 bucks if it happens .. that's mostly my only problem with using cm6

For Handcent, it's quit easy. Settings > Send Message Settings > Split 160.
Hopefully someday it will be that easy for Cyanogen's app.
I think someone fixed this in the hero fourms.

Maybe ask GamingPhreek what he did maybe he can help point us in the right direction.

yea it counts down like it should & then DOES indeed send the 2nd message. i just tested it a couple days ago with my girlfriend.
i do use handcent, but this was going thru the stock messaging app.
then again i dont have all the problems others have with AOSP.. ie cyanogenmod

I think the bug fix was sent in he may have fixed it across all cdma platforms he supports.
Edit: I really don't know, I do not run CM6, and the more i think about it i have no use for 4g were i am i should bite the bullet and flash.
Handcent is a sick app and its free.
So its kinda of a weird problem but when I was on the previous build of cm 6.1 I was able to split 160 chars no problem. Then along comes 6.11 now it has that sending problem.
Ummm....I've been having problems sending longer messages on CM6.1. It just sits there "Sending..." and then fails. Might that be because it is exceeding the character limit? I assumed that the app would handle this on it's own.
Yea this would be a nice feature. I also get the sending then fail if I try to send a long message.

I saw this thread and someone had an APK for CM (the original one posted there is just pure AOSP) but it didn't install properly for anyone. I tried it and it didn't work for me either.
I wish I had a setup for compiling and knew anything about how to do it so I could try compiling the current source with that diff patch.
Anyone willing to give it a shot?

When i get home i will get it set up for compiling.
And on ASOP it works take a look at asopMod if you have your hero still, it works. I had it working when i had my hero before he put the change in his build. i think the reason it doesn't work on CM is you need to sign it with CM's keys, or compile the whole rom with the changes

Hi everyone,
Eclair update, see changelog
I've just wrote a patch that allows you to change the MMS User-Agent within the messaging application. It's handy to for the follow reason:
If your carrier does not recognise the User-Agent as one it has seen before, and they are not using a well behaved MMSC, the MMSC will simply degrade the message to the lowest quality. The fix is to "spoof" the User-Agent from a phone that your carrier does recognise.

I'm on O2 in the UK and at present, all my picture messages would previously come through as 160x120px. I have successfully tested this with a Nokia N95 User-Agent string (examples below) and my MMS's now come through perfectly.
The APK below is built against cyanogen's CyanogenMod 3.9.7 (which also means you get rgv151's Send On Enter patch and other goodies aswell). The patch is also in the ZIP. Once installed, the setting is found under Messaging -> Settings -> MMS User-Agent.
To install, download the zip below, extract the APK and:
adb remount
adb push Mms.apk /system/app

Rebuilt against CM3.9.7
Hero
For the Hero Mms.apk, I've had to do it a bit different. There's no menu's, I've just decompiled the classes.dex (using JF's superb smali) from the Mms.apk in JACHeroski's 2.7.4 and changed the hardcoded values for the User Agent. I've recompiled three versions, one using the N95 string, another using the BlackBerry 8800 (both in hero_mms.zip) and the final one using a Softbank UA (in Mms_softbank.zip). I'm not running a Hero rom so can't test these, let me know if you try them. You only need one of the APKs from the ZIP! Rename the one you want to Mms.apk, then push it where you need to on your ROM.
Eclair
After quite a few people PM'ing me, I've updated the original patch for Eclair. I'm still on Donut which is why I haven't updated it before. Anyway it's been commited to OpenEclair and should be in the next release: http://github.com/openeclair/androi...mmit/3e82f91112764a998944415b031582b9caaf1217
I haven't compiled it myself therefore I can't produce an APK for download as yet. If you fancy doing it yourself, here's the patch: http://paste2.org/p/692468.

I am assuming that the User Agent is listed (by default) as the phone itself, and generally performs the same regardless of the installed ROM. Is that correct?

is there anyway to make the trackball light up for txt messages
Yes, but it would require the creator of an sms app to make it happen.
About a week ago I found what command needs to be sent to our phone to control the trackball, but the creator of handcent or chomp would need to add that command in to their app.
I was wondering that just the other day - not so much a toggle in the system, but I was hoping someone would make an app that would utilize the trackball light. It would be cool if it would blink with a txt message.

I see an update for handcent in the market that states it works on the hero now. Will test and report back.
UPDATE: Yeah, its a no go with this version. I thought maybe someone sent the developer the commands that would make it work. The timing seemed perfect for this scenario.
Ive been wondering the same thing. Thanks ill check out that app now. Ive had a nokia 6300 for a while and the LED's oni the side flash when i have a txt or a missed call. Id like an app that does something similar to this
Well, I have that version of Handcent installed, set the tackball to light up every 5 seconds and still no luck it doens't work

Hey flipz first of all thanks for the AMAZING work you are doing around here, I really apreciate it.
Second of all, would it be possible for you to get in contact with the developer of Handcent and tell him about this commands? Or even if I can be the messenger and let him know one way or the other? I think this would be a nice add to any Message app.
Thanks in advance!

Tried out the new version today, still a no go with lighting the trackball on our CDMA heros.
When I was researching the Hero prior to Sprint getting it i saw on a Youtube video that the trackball would blink for some alerts. Guess Sprint thought it was frivolous.

Yea. The option is built in and can be trigger manually. We just don't have any apps that currently use it or trigger it properly. The location of the trigger has changed slightly from the GSM Hero which is why apps that currently do support it for that phone don't work on ours.
honestly, just uninstalled handcent. I could not deal with the slowness of the scrolling plus the frequent issues with MMS downloading.
trying out sms popup along with picsay to see if this is a good workaround.
why can't everything just work and work fast!? oy!!
Hey guys,
Flipz sent me some code yesterday to tinker with. I was planning on working on this tonight. I will let you know tommorow if I actually have any luck getting it to come on in a test app.
Has anyone tried the new version of handcent? To see if the developer included the trackball suport? It was release today i think. Version 2.9.22
That sucks! The Eris's track ball pulses when i get messages of any type or phone call. I think it has to do with the carrier. But i don't know alot so don't quote that.
Just to update you guys I was working directly with the developer. He sent me 5 different test builds but couldn't get the trackball working. He seemed a bit distracted while we were talking though because I kept having to tell him stuff that I had already said. heh.
kcarpenter and I are still working on a work-around, but I haven't been able to help him out much between being out of town and now working on the kitchen.
Thanks for the update flipz!! Maybe the Eris configuration for the trackball can help?
@Daveli, maybe you are familiar enough with the phone to pull the LED directory of the Eris. Post it up here with a zip?

Hey everyone,
I was wondering if you all could help me out. I have installed the 7/22 build of jellybean and I send quite a bit of text messages. The problem is, I send a lot at one time and in JB, it stops me after I've send about 4 messages within a minute or two to the same person, asking me to allow this to happen. If I don't say allow, the text message will not send. By text message, I do mean sms to be specific. I searched through settings and found nothing to stop this message from popping up. I love the stock messaging app and I don't want to have to give it up unless there is no way around this. Does this happen to you and if so does anyone know a way around it? Thanks

I'm currently trying to recreate the issue. It's happened several times with normal text messaging to my girlfriend. It basically tells me that I've sent a lot of sms messages in a short period of time. A prompt comes up telling me that after I hit send. In order for the message to send I have to say "allow" in the prompt. The other option is, of course, "deny". This is an android OS prompt, not a superuser prompt. I can't seem to recreate it at the moment with google voice as my contact, but I'm sure it will happen again tomorrow when I'm texting my girlfriend and I will screen capture it, unless anyone knows what this is and how to disable it of course.

Oh, weird, I've never gotten that or even heard that function existed. I bet someone could pretty easily hack the messaging app to remove that limitation. It seems like a valid security feature though to prevent any app from mass texting. Maybe you should just write longer messages, haha.

Yeah, I am having the same problem on my HTC Inspire 4G running unofficial CM10 called JellyTime by randomblame ported to my phone. The easiest way to avoid this would be to get a second texting app and bounce back and fourth between the 2 apps. I was running Go SMS Pro and got the same prompt. So that's the best way I can think of to avoid the prompt for the time being.
Ever get one of those "You just won a $1,000 shopping spree at Best Buy" messages?
That's what this is supposed to prevent from happening to you, so your phone doesn't text random people who aren't even in your contact list.
I would say... put up with it. Eventually the mass SMS spammers will get the hint and they'll stop, at which point someone at Google will lift the limit, unless an app dev fixes the apk itself, at which point you'll have to manually monitor outgoing messages.
Edit: I wonder if someone has tried taking the messaging apk from gapps 4/29 and put it in the gapps 7/26 package? Would be a sensible attempt at avoiding the security block, but not sure if it would negate the security feature itself...
Actually, there is an app for rooted users that I found while using the search feature, called BAMF SMS fix. Check it out. Unfortunately I no longer have the link to the file, but I still have the file itself. PM me if you need the file. It is a flashable .zip

I'm not referring to the groupMe app, because they'd also have to install that.
I've tried Go SMS, pansi SMS, chomp SMS, and they don't seem to do it perfectly.
When I receive a group text from an iphone user, I want it to make a new thread with all members of the group text, where I can seamlessly respond to all users. Moreover, the stock app does this in a way that my response is not received as a group text on their end, but simply a message to them (as well as whoever else was in the group). Thus, the response goes into our 1v1 chat thread.
All I want is a plugin, rom, app, anything that solves this ridiculously frustrating issue.
I'd like to know as well. I have not been able to find an easy way to do it. I'm guessing it's Apple hating on us Android folks.
GoSMS does it very well, subject to a few limitations, not sure why it is not working for you. A couple of things to keep in mind.
1) The proper threading is not native but is run after the fact. This requires that the message be fully downloaded before it is properly threaded. This can take 10-15 seconds, if you open the message during that time it will not thread correctly.
2) Unfortunately the app will notify you twice, once the original message is received, and once it is recategorized. I handle this by shutting of sound and vibration in the app and using Tasker instead. If two notifications arrive within 15 secs Tasker just ignores the second one.
From what I have been told Handcent will do something similar
The GoSMS / Handcent implementations are ****. Sorry, but they are.
I've heard tell that Android finally put native group SMS / MMS into Android 4.2, which will likely never come to our phone officially but hopefully we'll get some of the benefit at least as things trickle down in the development community.
I'm also trying to find a solution to this too and I'm always hoping that every update of Go Sms and Handcent fixes this feature. Like one of the previous replies above stated, GO SMS will give you double notifications. It's annoying because it slows down your phone if you get too many all at once.
I've found that Handcent works better than GO SMS because it only notifies you after the message has been downloaded and you don't get double notifications. However, it's still flawed because sometimes your messages hang and dont download properly unless you physically click download. Also, sometimes when you're sending a text and try to hit send, it looks like it sends but just disappears. If you wrote a long message, you would have to re-type it all over again and hope it sends correctly the second time.
If you install CM 10.1 (android 4.2.2), this group messaging feature is baked into the rom. This is probably the best experience I've had to get the group messaging to work. It works like how an iphone user would see it. However, CM 10.1 still has some minor glitches that made me temporarily go back to sense roms. With every nightly, things seem to be getting better though. I will probably try it again in a couple weeks.
Currently I'm back on Viper using Handcent.
Have you tried side loading the MMS apk from 4.2?

Really? Doesn't seem to be working for me. I'm running aokp 4.2.2. Is there something else I must do? I see group messages are checked in the settings already

Guys, where can I find this APK?
can someone dropbox the newest apk?
So i tried installing this:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/oisv83ye8yv75lj/Mms.apk
I'm on ViperXL right now. I downloaded that MMS.apk to my phone and just tried running it, and the install process came up. Clicked yes through it but the app just force closes.
Am I doing something wrong here?

I've been told before that SMS apps for stock Android won't work on Sense ROMs and vice-versa. No idea why or if that's really true.

I've successfully run a CM10.1 mms.apk in CM10, but I've never tried this with Sense. Do you know what ROM that mms.apk file you have is actually from? I know CM10.1's mms.apk is compiled to require a minimum of JB 4.1, but versions from other JB 4.2 ROMs might have possibly been compiled to require JB 4.2
FWIW: mms.apk file is normally located in the /system/app folder, which requires root permissions to move a file to. File permissions might also need to be modified. Sense doesn't normally has a mms.apk in there since the stock messaging app is built around Sense and I believe the name starts with "htc", but I would assume a new mms.apk would at least run. I'm not sure whether this file location and permissions are actually part of your problem
update -
I've tried the entire process of putting the app in system, setting permissions, and installing, rebooting etc. No avail. App still force closes as soon as it opens.
I think the problem is in fact something to do with sense. I deleted the old messaging app as well first but that didn't do anything either.
Damn.
4.2.2 MMS force closes on viper 4.1
I uninstalled all the htc language packs, htc messaging. Install mms.apk.
I can get the app open, change settings, type a message... But as soon as I add a recipient it force closes.
Since I can do the things I can with the app open seems as though it should be able to work
If there is anyone that wants to work on this? I don't want to bug Turge with it.
Which mms.apk did you install?

That is an mms.apk from an aosp ROM, I didn't mention that when I uploaded it. It won't work properly on a Sense ROM.
