Why the hell does T-Mobile get all the good phones?

They always seem to have the best lineup (Nexus One, Nexus S, G2, MyTouch 4G, etc) but the absolute worst coverage and expensive plans! I know they're huge in Europe, but why are they so loaded in the US? Is there something I'm missing here? Sprint, who easily has the best prices and very good service, only has two "top-tier" phones in the EVO and Epic with nothing new on the horizon. Someone, please enlighten me!

Thank You. My wife and I had reps from Sprint, Verizon and, AT&T tell us that they cant touch Tmobiles prices. I know people with Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T and they all talk about how high their bills are and how they get charged for everything.

Sprint's "Everything Data - with Any Mobile, Anytime" gives you unlimited mobile-to-mobile (any carrier), unlimited nights and weekends, 450 "anytime" minutes, and unlimited everything else. Given the fact that pretty much everyone has a cell phone now this is essentially unlimited talk time. Price: $69/month + $10/month luxury tax = $79/month.
T-Mobiles's "Even More™ 500 Talk + Unlimited Text + Unlimited Web" is essentially the same as Sprint's aforementioned plan, but you can only call other T-Mobile customers with unlimited minutes, which is the smallest percentage of cell phone owners. Price: $79/month.
As you can see, you get the same price, but with Sprint you have a MAJOR advantage in the unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling. A similar plan on T-Mobile is $99/month (same as Sprint's "Simply Everything," though unless you make it a habit to call landlines in the middle of the day the "Everything Data" is already fairly unlimited). This was my major problem with T-Mobile's pricing, so unless there's a secret plan that I don't know about Sprint is still cheaper.

there is a BIG gotcha in those any mobile any time plans BTW.....
sprint has a huge list of rules for calls that qualify for anymobile any time...
such as you cannot be roaming, you must have data service not just voice service for said call to qualify (as in if you are not currently recieving a data signal your calls go against your minutes)
any call...
oh yeah and sprint's CDMA, thats the biggest reason they will never get my business, keep your grubby little hands outta my phone damnit!

Is that "holiday plan" eligible for further discounts (i.e. student) though? I'm assuming that you can only get it in-store since it isn't on the website.

dunno... i can get em over the phone but i am an inderect dealer... so try and find out, if not go hit up yout local RadioShack and ask for it

I saw that, but I've never used more than like 15 "anytime" minutes a month, and those were when I was calling my house. I can't really think of any times that I'm roaming, so that's a non-issue.

my MAJOR gripe is i cannot change phones at will, i have a MT4G G2 N1 G1 MT3G MT3G 1.2....
i like to bounce between the G2 MT4G and N1...

I would think that tmo (and other non-CDMA) carriers get the phones because they are GSM, which is closer to, if not the very same standard for those areas outside of North America.

With CDMA you are stuck with your carrier's discretion when you want to switch phones(IE, you have to call them up go through an annoying process when you want to switch). With GSM it is your discretion, since its swaping over the SIM to the other phone you want to use.

First off, GSM ftw. CDMA need to just, die. WTF did they decide to invent it anyways. Dumb assest move.
Either way. T-Mobile is THE BEST. AT EVERYTHING. *if* you get good coverage where you live.
My plan with T-Mobile is 59.99 for 500 minutes (which I only use 200~ of), unlimited texting, and unlimited data (at 7.2mbps on my vibrant!), free WiFi tethering, and WiFi calling. Even More Plus ftw. No contract. Eff contracts. Did I mention the reps are nicer than any reps of *any* company? And actually speak English?
Also AT&T are overpriced pricks, Verizon same, but also CDMA, Cricket, too small, Sprint, their 4g is slower than T-Mobile's 3g, and they're CDMA...
The only issue with T-Mobile is the AWS bands being incompatible with euro 3g / at&t 3g. These phones need to come with radios to support both in all honesty :/. If I move to somewhere T-Mobile sucks, I'll cry a river. Can't go AT&T... Freaking thieves. We need more GSM providers.

What plan is that? Were you grandfathered in from a previous agreement, or is that an actual plan that I could sign up for?

That 500 min plan is a plan you can sign up for right now. You have to get it in store though.

?! No I got it online. Pay full price for the phone then get the discounted even more plus plan with no contract. And no. I switched over from Verizon. Well. Had Cricket for a year (was under 18 lmao) then tried Verizon out, which wasn't much better than Cricket, so I got T-Mobile. And even more plus. And I've been flying on the real, true nation's fastest mobile data network since. Except that I tried AT&T for 20 days and ended up losing 400$ out of that as well as 80% of my calls being dropped. Terrible month.

Why is the plan with no contract cheaper than one with a contract? It seems like it would go the other way.

on the contract plan they are subsidizing the phone....
no contract = outright purchase of handset.

Tmo is way cheaper than I can get anywhere else, my wife and I have 5 lines on our plan with 3000 minutes, unlimited texting on all lines, and unlimited data on hers and mine. For about 200 a month.
My parents have two iphones on ATT with data and unlimited text and I think only around 500 minutes for like 120.

This is directly from TMoNews but I'm curious to see how the results will compare with theirs. I figure that TMoNews just might be... a little biased. You think?
So I wanted to post a poll on here where there are a variety of people that would share their opinions. Some of you are with AT&T... some might be with T-Mobile... others... well... why do you even care anyway?

I'm not sure what to make of it, even if it does succeed. I prefer T-Mobile to AT&T for better data speeds and cell service where I am. But AT&T has decent cell service, too. Their data speeds aren't as good as T-Mobile's. Regardless of whatever happens with the acquisition, T-Mobile would be wise to market quad band 3G data phones because just the idea of AT&T buying them will severely hamper any sales of phones. If people know their brand new T-Mobile smartphones will continue to work with AT&T, then they will continue to buy. But if T-Mobile doesn't take steps to ensure the continued operation of their phones with AT&T, even if the acquisition fails, then sales will plummet.

I agree. Some T-Mobile devices already support AT&T 3G. To my understanding the Vibrant does already. Although I haven't tried it for myself. They are also releasing several new phones in the near future that got me all excited such as the HTC Sensation. I love pretty much everything about that phone and I can't wait until it's release this summer! BUT! If I can't use it on AT&T's 3G network... then what would be the point of buying it? Unless AT&T adopts T-Mobiles 3G spectrum which is also a possiblity. But honestly, I am having second thoughts now about upgrading to a new phone because what if this merger DOES go through and worse case scenerio DOES happen? I'm on a T-Mobile Loyalty plan that I love! After this deal goes through (assuming of course, it does) I don't think that AT&T will want to keep me on this 'special' plan.

T-Mobile keeps saying that nothing will change.
AT&T says that nothing will change.
But we all know that AT&T is not going to be offering T-Moble rate plans to new customers so they will probably be grandfathered. Which means once you change your T-Mobile rate plan to an AT&T plan... you can't go back. Also when you change your phone by upgrading it is possible that you may have to change your rate plan and services.
So worse case scenario here, you go with the merger, become an AT&T customer and two or three years down the row you want to get the newest and latest phone. By that time AT&T will more than likely NOT be able to allow you to keep your current plan.
But... all of that is just my own personal assumption and again... worse case scenario.

AT&T haven't acquired TMobile. Only T-Mobile USA as I understand it. Either way, my feelings are nothing. I nothing it as I'm English and really don't care nor understand the politics of choosing a phone provider in America!

Then why respond to the thread?
My opinion is that it will only benefit AT&T customers (maybe)
T-mobile customers will be screwed. We will be grandfathered in until we want an upgrade and be forced to switch. It will also create a GSM monopoly which will benefit no one (customers, I don't care about shareholders or CEO bonuses) I truly hope they block this merger.

As one of the oldest people in this forum, this will not be good for the consumer. I do mergers and acquisitions, and this one will not be a price reduction to us. Bottom line this will not benefit us the consumer. It will help ATT... but for us....... we will come up short and most likely have to look at going to Verizon or Sprint I hope it does not go through.

It is a terrible concept. At&t claims it will save consumers money, but as soon as new phones come out, and T-mobile customers want to upgrade to them, they will have to move to AT&T's expensive plans. I think the reasonably priced underdogs should have teamed up (Sprint and T-mobile) And I mean teamed up not bought out. Then they would be able to afford their cheap plans, they would be given the newest phones, and would make it to number one. Instead At&t will suck everyone dry until Sprint is out of business, and At&t customers realize how much they are getting ripped off. Then it will just be Verizon on top.

There's a reason Ma Bell was split up in 1984 due to an antitrust suit. Slowly they're sucking up the competition again. I don't think that having a GSM monopoly here in America is a good choice at all. It's bad for consumers because it's taking away our choices. I prefer GSM at this point to CDMA because I like the flexibility of a sim card and the fact that as far as 3G is concerned, the speeds are faster. (I'm not factoring in anything that has to do with LTE sim cards as it's still too new) I don't want to switch to Sprint or Verizon, I get too good of a deal on T-Mobile. I've had AT&T in the past and I lived in an area with a TON of dropped calls. It was horrid, and I hated their customer service. I do NOT want to be a part of AT&T again. I really hope this does not get approved. At least then T-Mobile gets 3 billion dollars from AT&T, some spectrum, and roaming agreements.

HERE IS MY REPLY / VIEW ON THIS from another post. We need to show our resent to FCC and DoD to stop this deal. Is there any cases/notices/appeals/votes going on ?? I am no lawer but i seriously believe that we can win the case by just presenting some of the FACTS from these posts.
Every company has flaws. For ATT it happens to be their network. As another member said pick your poison. I will agree with you that verizon is even more expensive than ATT but i wont agree that TMO-ATT merger can be good. I wont compare services as they are location dependent. But just for the competition sake. For e.g. :
1. TMO offers completely different plans than ATT. (and one of the cheapest data plans for $10). Also international users still have a choice of unlimited data plans. Its just what suits you.
2. TMO has more choices of top smartphones. Some of the current and future dual core phones for TMobile are - LG G2X, HTC sensation, Galaxy S2 while Atrix is the only dual core yet announced (Both are supposed to get LG 3Ds). TMO even beats ATT selection in single cores. Almost a year old Iphone 4 and Captivate are next best phones on ATT. While TMO has/had plenty of HTC, Samsung and motorola phones to choose from.
Just answer if GPS on captivate didnt work what choice were ATT customers given - none till this feb, meanwhile all the other companies released tons of android devices to suit everybodys needs. I know ATT supposed to release 15-20 android phones this year but when ? we are done with 1/3 year and all we know is LG thrill 3D and Infuse without any dates. I am sure even then TMO will have more choices to select from.
Its very important for US customers to have GSM competition as all new phone technology in world is first released in GSM. CDMA versions (IPhone, Bionic) are always months late.
3. Again right now TMOs 4G is ON while ATTs not. Atleast some GSM customers have a choice to select a working service.
4. As for what you said "Better coverage, lower prices? ", I seriously doubt less GSM competition will result in lower prices. Plus GSM coverage will still be the same. Its just that ATT will have it all and customers wont have any choice.
To conclude, If TMo-ATT deals is allowed to happen, competition (all the above stated FACTS) will severly degrade with only one GSM player.
I tried to be as neutral as i could & Just presented it from shoppers point of view. I know ATT has many positives over TMo as well. All the more reason the deal shouln't happen. Just to have a choice and maintain competition of devices and services. ATT should improve their network like everybody else by investing in it rather than buying off competition.

What's going to happen is just like what happened when alltel got baught out by verizon. Here's the scoop when your grandfathered in with tmobile and the switch happens, you can still keep your plan when you upgrade. You can still have the tmo plan but att is billing you. So it won't hurt people I don't think. Just better signal all around. Besides when the buy out is complete there will still be tmobile stands in some markets, if it goes accordingly as it did with alltel and verizon. Good or bad? I say good! Now America will have a good gsm network. Very much comparable to verizon.

Sprint EVO 4G OR Verizon Droid Charge?

I am currently with t-mobile and looking to change carriers now that's the merger is it true. I am split between the sprint EVO 4g and the verizon samsung droid charge... They both have great coverage and both work on 4g with gingerbread, I am looking for peoples opinions on them... Root capabilities, functions, etc...

Evo 4G owner for almost a year. Evo development and support forum is "Ginormuous". However, the phone is over a year old, so there are more attractive/powerful devices in the market.
Sprint unlimited data/phone calls… nuff said! Look outside the sprint store for sprint phones. In my area, Radio Shack is selling brand new evo4g's for $50 with a new contract. Sprint is also throwing in $125 credit for switching carriers. I also get a 23% employee discount that sprint gives out to several business and larger corporations. Hope this help.

I've seen that Sprint has better coverage than Verizon and they still have unlimited data, unlike any of the other carriers!
Hopefully I can get a discount, I work for a small Engineering firm, but my wife works for a large local credit union. I tried her email on their discount check website and it said that nothing was available, but I bet I can talk one of the sales associates into saying I work somewhere.
Thanks for the tip on shopping outside the sprint stores... I would have never thought to visit Radio Shack.
Now to try to get out of my T-mobile contract w/o paying ridiculous breaking contract fees! Any tips?

IMO Verizon has better coverage at the moment. Their LTE download speeds are unmatched in the US from my understanding. However, I'm more than satisfied with sprint's 4/3 G coverage where I live. Sprint I'm hearing will soon offer LTE coverage but when, is anysones guess. Also check the 4g coverage in your area for sprint. There are several large markets that don't have sprint's 4g.

Why leave T-Mobile if you're happy with their service?
You can get a Sensation with a 2-year contract and AT&T has to wait until your contract ends before trying to screw you.

If you are in Kansas City......Sprint is a no brainer.

I'm happy with T-mobile's services... their coverage is decent in my area, there are a few places I go throughout my city that I only get Edge coverage. Everywhere I travel I don't get service though... my moms house north of the city get's very faint Edge service, my wife's mom's town (1.5 hours away) is roaming on AT&T. My grandparents in Ohio, I have to shut my phone off as there isn't even roaming available. My relatives in Colorado, there's no service at all either.
We are starting to travel more and I would like to get decent coverage other than along the interstate.
We shall see how all this pans out. Does anyone know when the merger will take affect and towers will be shared? AT&T customers will get the added benefit of using T-mobile towers, but will T-mobile customers be allowed to use AT&T towers? Or will they restrict it and leave us with current service until we renew contracts over the next couple of years and try to get us to sign with AT&T to get the benefit of using both sets of towers?
I'm not a big fan of the merger... nor of T-mobile's laziness in sending out OS updates for phones. I like staying mostly stock on my phone except for the kernel and the ability to backup/restore. My experience with T-mobile has been good up until the last year when we've had to return 4 defective phones and realize coverage sucks!
By all means, please keep pointing out reasons I should stay with T-mobile! I would love to have someone talk me back into staying!

Sprint has a 30 no questions asked return policy
Verizon has a 14 day no questions policy.
I recently switched from Sprint EVO to a Verizon Charge.
I bought the EVO last year for the 4G but My personal experience has been less than stellar (Houston) Your mileage may vary.
Sense 3.0 is superior to Touchwiz but adw launchers help with that.
Stock battery lasted 5 hours on EVO on Charge it last 8 hours
Charge screen is Super AMOLED which is currently the height of android screen tech. EVO 3D has the 3D screen.
Charge has physical buttons. EVO has soft touch buttons
Charge has funny shape
Its all a matter of preference.

Who's jumping ship after their contract is up?

I have to say, after 8 years with VZW, I'm finally throwing in the towel and moving onto another network who actually respects their customers. With the lack of updates and feature support to their tiered data plans, it just doesn't seem logical from a consumers perspective to stay with a company that's hell bent on invading your privacy while offering little to nothing in return. If you're in the same boat, what network are you planning on joining and why?

I really wanted to go to t-mobile so I can cut my bill in half with them but they don't have lte where I live yet and their 4g does not penetrate my work area. I just preordered my gs4 with verizon and its the last phone I will have with them unless they give us our early upgrades back and also let us upgrade from our unlimited data lines. For now I am very satisfied with their service but my days with them are definetly numbered

I've only had Verizon now for about 9 months, and I've been regretting getting it since about 3 months in when I realized that you can pretty much only use these phones on Verizon (I've seen threads where they use them on other carriers, but it looks really complicated). Not to mention I pay roughly $55/ month just for data alone, which is just 1 GB. I dont even want to get started on how stupid that tiered data is--I know it makes them money, but I also know it doesnt cost them nearly as much as what they charge for it. I will most likely cancel my contract as soon as I get some cash to get out of it. As far as 4G is concerned, its nice to have and all, but it seems to just blow through my whole 1 GB of data in no time flat. Not to mention I use maybe 50 minutes of talking/ month, and about the same text messages. I only got Verizon so I could have a fancy phone, and I got that, and now I'm seriously paying for it. If I could get this bastard to work on Straight Talk I would be set, but I'm pretty sure the easiest way is to buy a TMo or ATT variant (you know, unless someone has a tip they would like to share )

Would like to change, but stuck with Verizon in Upstate NY. AT&T is EDGE speeds at best outside the cities. Most houses act like Faraday cages and since I am on call I need voice and data to work almost all the time. AT&T would constantly drop calls. Sprint isn't bad for voice, but high speed data is lacking in most of the boonies. T-mobile is like AT&T (but worse).
So yeah, I'm rocking a $230/mo family plan for 4 smartphones, a dumbphone, and a measly 4GB of data a month (that is with a 21% corp discount).
Woohoo!!!

There are lots of reasons to hate VZW, but there is one reason to love them: Network coverage. A few months ago I was in ruralish Virginia, and I had 4gLTE. Those towers don't pay for themselves...

Ummmm , I've never had a problem with Verizon and I can say that they most definitely do respect their customers . I have mostly positive things to say regarding my total experience with Verizon.

Well I was able to email the President of the Southwest Region of SoCal, got the network extender (cause my base has no coverage for any cell phone service) for free. And everywhere I go I at least got coverage. I've wanted to jump ship for quite sometime

Verizon = bad, others = WORSE!
I rate 'em like this, on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the best:
VZW = -2
T-Mo = -1.5 (slightly better CS but poor coverage)
AT&T = -6,593,865,432
Sprint = Will they be in business tomorrow?
NOTE, all carriers suck, nobody even rates a zero and I'm in a really good mood so I rated AT&T's "We don't care" CS and "Oops, we dropped your call" network much higher than they really deserve.
I'm sticking with VZW.

I have mostly positive experiences with Verizon and with Sprint but I had bad experiences with T-Mobile and AT&T. With t-mobile it was mainly bad cell coverage while AT&T it was customer service.

I pay 55$ a month. 2gb internet, unlimited calls to cellphones , 500 landline minutes (unlimited on weekends and weekday nights I think) unlimited texting, 4g is good here in Houston. I've been thinking when my contract is up, T-Mobile. Maybe back to cricket even. I just don't know anymore.

I have really been contemplating switching to T-Mobile. I'm in NYC and LTE in Manhattan during the middle of the day is no better than att/tmobile hspa. I rarely get over 10mbps with my galaxy s3. But the overall coverage is great and I really don't want to give that up. I hope that with metro pcs T-Mobile can expand their service.

Sadly jumping ship isn't an option for me since verizon has the best signal and data where i live. I'm just holding out for the next nexus on verizon.

Same here. I've been with Verizon for probably ten years and although their custom firmware settings on phones and fairly high prices grinds on me a bit where I live they're still the best game in town. Just renewed with them for two more years when I got this pair of i535s from Best Buy.

I hope every one here knows that if you have unlimited data with Verizon and you UPGRADE YOU CAN STILL KEEP YOUR UNLIMITED PLANS. THERE IS ALOT OF MISS INFORMATION ON THIS:banghead::banghead:. Yes ......call them and tell them after you upgrade you want your unlimited back .They will give it to you. But call before you upgrade so it will be in your file. This only can be done on the phone not in any store. When you upgrade just take the 2gb plan. Then when you get the phone call them back and tell them to put the unlimited back on. They do this for loyal customers. Don't let them tell you they don't cause they do. The person you speak to might not know so ask for another rep.Don't upgrade until it is in you file saying they will give it back to you after wards. This works I know for a fact. This is just not advertised. I only learned because a rep was nice enuff to tell me.....So spread the word...Its called The Loyal Customer worry free exchange program......THIS DOES WORK .I UPGRADED MINE AND MY WIFES.PLUS MY BOSS AND BARBER( I get free hair cuts now lol):thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

You will miss Verizon sorely once you do any traveling. No other network comes close to the coverage they have.

I can't jump ship from Verizon either because the carrier I want to go to (T-Mobile) has the same crappy service from when I was with them 2 years ago. If LTE was to come to my area on T-Mobile I would definitely test it and if its worth it i'll jump ship from Verizon. But Verizon has to be the best service I get in my area & i'm still grandfathered in on my Unlimited Data, been getting phones through Swappa & Craigslist for the time being.

To me, it's similar to Comcast - they have high prices, but the best service too. I always have a great signal, blazing fast internet... hard to complain about the price to me. I'm coming from Sprint, who's price was barely cheaper, and the service was terrible.

TMobile FTW!!!

So, in case you didnt notice, TMobile had a event last night as well as Amazon..

-VOLTE in 16 more cities now..
- a new program that allows a 7 day, "free test of TMO network" with the use of an Iphone 5S to try their network!!!
I just did a speed test inside my house, in the Suburbs of Chicago, one of the new VOLTE cities..
43 megs down, 13 megs up, in my BASEMENT!!!
Kudos to TMO for kicking the competitors to the curb!

I'm in Columbus, Ohio one of the Wideband LTE markets and my speeds haven't gone any higher yet so not sure it's activated in my area yet. Still good speeds without Wideband LTE.

I'm still kind of pissy that T-Mobile pulled a fast one and sent me renew later for my discount but dropped the association. lol I told TmoNews about and they did a story on it. Back when T-Mobile tried to drop discounts but didn't because customers were pissed they said current people with a discount would be grandfathered in. I have 4 lines and the savings was over 20 bucks. Not all about the money just the way T-Mobile messed up the discount thing not once but twice and I'm not alone. I have a discount AT&T and Verizon and looking into Cricket Aio.

I was with Sprint 14 years and left them a year ago for T-Mobile because they kept telling my slow web speeds was because of four of my phones were defective. lol If the Sprin T-Mobile merger happens I'm probably gone even if T-Mobile is running the show. I don't see how the will lower prices like the Softbank owner says but probably awhile before it happens if it happens at all. The good thing is T-Mobile is lowering prices for all the carriers.

I had Sprint for 10 years, and actually liked them alot, until they were bought by Softbank; then they became just as tough to deal with as ATT/Verizon, plus, their network went to hell, and even though Chicago was one of their first cities with the new network, we couldn't even make calls in our house, let alone get any reliable data speed..
I am counting on the FTC to not let this merger happen, and if they do, I will probably just buy a Virgin Mobile phone and go that route; all the "major" carriers really suck now, except TMO, IMO, and its not worth partnering with any of them at this point.

Well apparently the rhapsody deal is only for the credit check unlimited plans. If you're on the no credit check unlimited plan you have to pay Four to Ten dollars for service. I've been having issues the past few day with my service in Dallas getting 5-10megs where I normally get 35-50 megs down and for a long time. Apparently there is something going on that should be corrected in the next 72hrs said the T-Mobile rep. I'm hoping they're upgrading or something, but I don't see getting much higher than I'm used to atm.
EDIT: Well after reading Dallas is also one of the cities supposed to recieve volte today so that could be the reason for the current troubles.

Tmo has not dropped state employee discounts. I switched from Verizon because they were cleaning me out even with their discounts. Tmo costs me 80/mo less than big red. And the coverage in the sticks with Tmo is not as bad as I thought it would be.
Btw just got my G2 the other day and I am loving this phone!

Yep. this is the most all-around pleasing phone I';ve ever owned.

My dad is retired from the military so I'm going to make him a authorized user so we can get our discount back.
T-Mobile couldn't tell me what 16 Wideband markets were active. Then another T-Mobile told me "although wideband LTE is available in 16 markets every tower in that market may not support it yet. We will continue to improve and you will continue to see advancements in the future! A customers reply "if T-Mobile doesn't have the info on when these cities would be activated why would T-Mobile announce that they are in 16 new cities now. They didn't say it's coming they said we are now in 16 new cities with wideband LTE. This is very unprofessional to say the least. Good point...
I really liked the G2 but the curved design got me with the Flex. The G2 would probably feel small now.
