Hello all, wanted user feedback on the following:
1) What is the best cross-platform messaging application for Android that you use (and why)? So far, I know of Whatsapp, and Klik, but are there others that dont require any annual subscription, work on Android, Win 7, iPhone and Blackberry, and have a neat UI?
2) What is the best IM application for Android? Should be able to do Skype, Yahoo, MSN, AOL, ICQ, Jabber, etc, including multiple accounts for a protocol. I know of Meebo, IM+, but what other do you use (and why do you like it)?
Thanks
1>Handsent SMS
2>Go SMS
3>Chomp SMS
1) I preferred KiK over WhatsApp as the former had a cleaner UI and seemed a lot less bloated. On the other hand WhatsApp has it's wide array of features like file sharing that is missing in KiK. KiK cannot be truly considered cross platform however because it's available for BlackBerrys.
An up-and-comer is LiveProfile http://www.appbrain.com/app/liveprofile-beta/com.liveprofile.android
I liked LP as it had probably the best UI out of all the clients available while it also incorporated SMS into the client to make it an all encompassing messaging client. The only thing they are missing is integration with ICQ/Gtalk/MSN etc. which may be a feature added in the future. The app just released their versions for BB and iPhones so it's slowly getting off the ground but it seems to have the best potential out of all the clients available.
2) I tried Trillian and it seemed to work well. Again, a very nice UI and worked with almost all messaging protocols. I stopped using it because I mainly only use gTalk anyways so I went back to the stock gTalk client.
Give IM+ a new try.
In the latest 3.3 version:
Smoother UI graphics
MSN and Skype group chats
Swipe-switching between chats
Login with several accounts for one IM service
Geo-status and Geo-location sending
Chat or history sending by email
Many bugfixes and performance improvements!

Does im+ support multiple location login for msn/live messenger accounts?
I use palringo in my opinion its the best app for mutiple IM programs like Jabber, Gtalk, Yahoo, AIM, and even Faceboook Myself as a Winmo/Droid user I needed a and app that allowed me Gtalk access cause I rep the GreenDot Im (GDO) Green Dot Official Your either green or your not. Palringo took care of my messaging needs and I recommend it to all. If the creators get KiK support its over for all other companies I tell you

WhatsApp is the best one I've used.
It uses C2DM on 2.2+. File Transfer. Location. Cross-Platform. No need to register for another account, invite users with it, make a screen name, etc.
Messages get delivered fast and there are Delivery statuses in the app.
It's also cheaper than those commercial IM apps.
I was just looking at the IM+ website (Google brought this thread up), and the price is ludicrous.
If I feel the need to use an IM app, then I'd probably go with BeejiveIM. It looks better, and uses PUSH on FroYo and Gingerbread.
If IM+ supports PUSH then their marketing dept needs to get on it. They clearly list it for Windows Mobile (???) and iOS, but not Android...
Beejive is not as good on android as it is on my old bb9700 but its still good. Not too taxing on battry and has gchat push notifications to save some juice. Its cross platform but licenses don't xfer cross platform. However on android they are tied to your Gmail account. Its a but costly but was worth it. Deleted my facebook so I chat exclusively on gchat now so no need for it.

You can try the ad-based free version of IM+, it has all the same functionality as Pro version. If you will, don't hesitate to leave your feedback here. Push, along with other new features, is coming for Android in next 1-2 months.

It does support multiple location but functionality seems to be a bit hit & miss. It doesn't always detect messages if chat windows were already open on my desktop client, doesn't detect messages when the desktop client is in invisible mode and it changed my desktop's client status message to on android with im+.

Why should Windows Mobile users settle on some second rate version missing key features
It is one reasons id love a blackberry like the storm b/c of the "always on" facebook and the interface. I dont understand why people dont develop more for windows mobile. Its not like they dont push phones like the touch pro. The ones they have now look like they are from 1996 with the graphics.

this is a very closed alpha/proof of concept and no one on the HD is benefiting yet , trust me.
Also I dont wish to use the overrated Xperia panel system on my phone, I just want an official facebook app that I and ALL OTHER Windows Mobile users no matter what device they have, can use.
Now the way I see it, the facebook panel on xperia is pretty much a windows mobile app, and as such should be able to run on any other windows mobile device (with at least VGA screen I suppose.. hence my reward, I cant do it myself, but im sure someone here can, there would be so many grateful WM users too

After I log in on Opera mobile it takes me to the normal 'm.facebook' page?
Just tried Snap2Face or Skybook as its now called...seems pretty good for a standalone app. Probably not as polished as the other version though.
I'm sorry, but I do not consider 'snap2face' or 'skybook' a viable solution. Its slow, its buggy, it has a terrible, terrible layout (icons are often tiny on anything above a QVGA screen) and it makes a mess of its cache.
Can I ask the developers in here.. is there a REASON why the xperia facebook panel cannot be simply extracted and converted into a stand alone app?

As in your previous thread (started a few months back), everyone is trying to tell you that Windows Mobile devices have more advanced features (of course, no Facebook). So if the only thing you are concerned of is Facebook, well... you could always get an iPhone.
Oh, by the way, then you'll be complaining about unable to send MMS, forward SMS, copy text in SMS, and ect... oh well... you're going to bombard me next.
PS: If I'm a developer, the moment I read your first post in this thread, I'll just ignore you. Maybe you should rephrase your sentences so that people (including developers) feel the need of Facebook application. This way, maybe someone out there would offer his/her help.

No you miss my point. The difference is that we DO have a WM version now.. the xperia facebook panel. No iphone required. I am urging devs on here to merely find a way to convert that panel into a standalone app for all WM users to enjoy.
the facebook application i have is version 1.007 and its utterly rubbish, is there a newer version if not will there be a newer one soon?
if there is a better application where can i get it from?
it says on windows market place that the current facebook app is version 1.1 so i installed it, then it asks me to restart the phone but then when i load up facebook its still version 1.007.
thankyou

Mine also says 1.007 after the update, but I can see that the application itself has changed since the update. There are some options available now, that wasn't before I upgraded...
So my guess is, that it's in fact 1.1 even though it says it's still 1.007.
I don't know what you think is rubbish about the application itself, I think it's quite okay considered it being a "light-app"...

thanks for everyone's answers, really helpful x
Or you could install the Sony Ericssons X2 Panel Manager and the Facebook panel... it's by far the best Facebook app on the device!
Thanks for alternative facebook links.
lite.facebook.com worked perfectly!
the lite site doesn't let you post comments unless you've already commented on them. not entirely sure why. I just wish microsoft would get their ass in gear and give the facebook app a radical overhaul : with no live feed, only one comment showing and a very badly thought out user interface it makes the user experience about as pleasant to use as a skipping rope made of razor wire.
just go to www.facebook.com on OPERA

Problem is that the Facebook API (public) doesn't allow authentication through a mobile application.. only Windows Apps or Web-sites. And you also get some reduced functionality when using it on a mobile.. Guess Microsoft got som extra treatment from Facebook to release the app....
If they would open up the API more for mobile apps, I'm sure we'd see all kinds of facebook apps bubbling up to the surface.
i too am waiting for a decent app that lets me "like" and comment and view comments ect. the best iv founx so far is FIM from mosko mobi its a fb chat client with a simple fb mobile browser built it but the best bit is that any notifications pop up in htc's notification bar (when the apps running ofcourse) its not the best app in the world but it will do till winmo gets one liks the iphone. hope this helps
SO yeah, this X2 Facebook app is much better, and super smooth. Smoother than the iPhone one I think. And it looks quite nice too

Cloud to SMS allows you to send messages from your browser, through your phone using the Android notification system (C2DM). The purpose of the app is to allow users (You!) to send SMS messages using their phones existing carrier account without having to touch their phone.
Requires Froyo (Android 2.2) or higher.

Beta of "free" version released to marketplace.
Allows you to send up to 7 messages a day, premium version beta coming in a few days with a release in about 2 weeks.
Grab the beta of the Chrome extension here: http://www.cloudtosms.com/files/cloudtosms-chrome-extension.crx
Feedback welcome
In case anyone is interested, this app is now in Beta and I will be releasing it to market soon.
Send and receive SMS messages from the website
All messages secured by SSL both ways
I will be making a Chrome plugin very soon so you don't need to browse to the website to send/receive.
http://www.cloudtosms.com/?page_id=15
This app has a ton of potential. Can't wait for that Chrome extension!
I could see this having a ton of uses. One being it could grab an entire group of contacts from your Gmail account (or export them from what ever place you prefer to store your contacts and import them directly to the online app -though kind of a concern issue for obvious security reasons). Then you could send bulk Txt's much easier than directly on the phone. It could even schedule them, etc. I frequently have to send out mass texts to different groups and it could save me a lot of time every week if it had those functions.
Feel free to PM me for brainstorming!
Thanks for the feedback.
Will definitely add "Groups" in a future version of the webapp.
I don't store any contacts on the server, its all handled by javascript on the client side (e.g. by your computers browser). If there are other contact sources that work like the Google Contacts API (e.g. allow un-cached display of contacts) I could attempt to add support.
Scheduling is an interesting idea and something to consider in future versions.
One thing to keep in mind is Google limit the amount of messages sent through C2DM, so bulk messages would only work to a certain point.
wonderful app, tons of potential. works perfectly on my spica running cm6.1 rc1. thanks rolf!
Very cool concept. I'll try it out shortly.
First release of the chrome extension is good to go. I haven't tested it on any PC's aside from my own so it might not work, please advise if you try it out:
http://www.cloudtosms.com/?page_id=15
nice man, keep it up
This is an awesome app!!! Runs fast and smooth on my Desire with Teppics pre-rooted stock rom.
Two things:
I would like to able to prevent the notification sound when sending messages. I thought I could turn it off in Settings but either I cannot understand the meaning of "Use notification sound" or the feature doesn't work ;-)
Also an option to prevent the status bar notification icon and notification entry would be nice.
Otherwise awesome!
[edit]
Oh! One more thing: The web page (https://cloudtosms.appspot.com/) seems to hang when fetching contacts (I have about 250 contacts)...
And of course Google Apps support would also be nice so that I don't have to manually export/import my contacts between two accounts.
[/edit]
./kroogar
AWESOME!
This is what I have been waiting for forever!
Chrome extension is awesome, would love a firefox one, too.
Even better would be a standalone app.
Also push ALL notifications from phone back to the cloud.
You would be truly amazing.
Cannot load page
This morning (as of right now) I cannot load the page https://cloudtosms.appspot.com in either Chrome or Firefox. It seems there is a piece of JavaScript that will not load. The page hangs until the browser complains. It's preventing me from logging in :-(
I'm using Chrome 9.0.570.0 and Firefox 3.6.12.
[edit]
Actually managed to get to the log in page by pressing the Sign in link as soon as the page starts loading. After log in the page still hangs trying to fetch my contacts...
[/edit]
I think this might be the pubnub servers being slow. I might cache their Javascript to fix this problem. Can you confirm if the problem is still occuring?
EDIT: this should be fixed now
the feedbak for this app is really good, but I still don't get what is this for. Maybe a short explanation would be a good idea.
Thanks!

Hmm... now nine hours after my attempt this morning I have conquered the snow and reached home - unfortunately just to realize the problem still occurs :-( In Chrome I'm already signed in and it just sits there fetching contacts. In Firefox I'm not signed in and problem is the same as described earlier.
I have not at any point been able to see my contacts on the web page. They do seem to be loaded just fine in the Chrome extension though...
Maybe you like a another icon? Today i created one... maybe you like it..
Let me know what you think about it
Hrm... Darn Javascript.
If you press ctrl+shift+j in Chrome or Forefox it will show the Javascript error console, does this show you any errors?
Does it work if you browse incognito?
If you want to email me kroogar to get instant responses please feel free (my username at gmail.com)
Sinas: it is a much cleaner icon, I will try it in the build and see how it looks
Installed and working with minimal fuss. Very impressed (currently using sms2pc)
However, despite refreshing the chrome tab only 361 of my 500+ contacts appear. Same happens through the webpage. Happy to help test larger contact lists if it helps
Super job so far.
I found this app last week and have been very impressed with it, it's currently in beta stage now on Android, and will support Android, Blackberry, & iPhone.
It works with a pin, has unlimited messaging, no restriction on character limits etc. You can use this as a stand alone app or as your sms text app as well.
It shows current status, message delivered indicator, message read indicator and more.
A very nice start to what looks to be a very promising app for all smart phones.

Damn. Hoped you meant a multi-network app. Like MSN/Aim/Yahoo and so on. Not another BBM remake. We already got PingChat and WhatsApp.
I wasn't aware of ping chat... it looks to be nice as well.... this is just what I found and it works so fast and simple, I thought I would share it.
One main difference I see is the other apps only work for those that have the app installed... as this will also work as your sms/text messenger.
I haven't tested the others yet.. but I will now to see how they compare.
Using PingChat but will give this a try, thanks!
But I don't think I'll use it regulary since everyone knows im using PingChat
this to BBM?
how do i add a friend that uses a blackberry? can they use their BBM program or do they have to get this program? where do i find their pin?
are the sms free as well?
Just use WhatsApp..
It already does everything this can do, its out and it integrates with your phone contacts
Live Profile will be nice when it releases the iPhone and Blackberry apps.
I've been using Kik Messenger (http://kik.com/) and have been really liking it.

i wanna be able to use it when the BB version comes out but the battery drain is enourmous

Damn. Hoped you meant a multi-network app. Like MSN/Aim/Yahoo and so on. Not another BBM remake. We already got PingChat and WhatsApp.

I've been using "eBuddy", as a muti-network IM client. It works on: MSN, Yahoo, AIM, Google Talk, MySpace, ICQ, Hyves, and Facebook! It works well, and doesn't seem to eat too much battery.
Cheers.
I use aim for facebook chat, does this do facebook chat?
I dont really know anyone who still uses instant messengers other than well sms/text messaging.
just another pingchat & whatsapp application????
will give it a spin when the other os r ready
So this thing uses polling and not push? No, thanks...
ok well after some playing this app certainly polls. My phone, which typically gets me 2 days of light to moderate usage, went from 100% charge down to 7% in 6 hours. Additionally taking a look at the comments in the market you can see others are noticing it as well. The problem is a phone must function as a phone first, all other stuff is secondary. If the phone cannot maintain a charge, it's a $500 paperweight.
You have an awesome app so I'd like to make some suggestions and let me preface by saying i make them with all due respect.
- You really need to push not poll. This saves a ton on battery as the server is doing the heavy lifting and also means no need for a wakelock
- With the suggestion above it means you may need to adjust your business model. Servers come at a cost, you have the initial purchase, maintenance, plus monthly charges of running them (power, broadband). the way BlackBerry gets away with this is by indirectly charging the customer straight through the carrier. When you purchase a BB you get a nice little BB tax of $20 or $30 thrown onto your bill which covers monthly use of the push servers for such things as email and BB messenger. You cant do this, nobody would pay an extra monthly fee so you will need to think outside of the box.
a) look into using admob and putting adds into the settings menus and other non-intrusive places. This should hopefully cover some of the costs.
b) Charge for the app upfront (this is in addition to the ad's). Charge a buck or two at the time of purchase.
c) Make it more than just Liveprofile messages and text. Add in some other services to make this a must have app such as facebook chat or gtalk which would also be pushed through the server. People would buy an app with facebook chat that does push for that purpose alone! I suggested gtalk as well because of its deep integration to google, with android getting as large as it is, gtalk is becoming more and more popular. The current gtalk app that comes with android is push, works beautifully, and barely uses battery.
d) Maybe think of a way to create a group license package that you could market to large companies which could help bring in lump sums of cash plus the additional exposure to the ad's (point a).
here is a link to an article which you may find of value.
Again great work. I hope to see this with push servers in the near future because i can easily see this becoming everyones "must have" application.

SocialBlast provides you with an easy and enjoyable way to update your status on multiple social networks with one blast! We currently support Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Foursquare. As soon as Google+ has an API, we'll be adding it as well.
When you first open the app you'll create your SocialBlast account, which will give you the ability to sync your social accounts across devices with ease. Then you can add as many social accounts as you'd like, even multiple accounts from each network. When you add your social accounts to SocialBlast, those tokens are encrypted and stored securely on the SocialBlast server for easy access on any of your devices with SocialBlast support (iPhone and iPad clients coming soon).
The home screen presents three icons on the left. The first lets you choose which accounts the current blast will update. The second lets you take or choose a photo to include. The third gives you the ability to checkin with Facebook and/or Foursquare, and even checkin with your friends for Facebook accounts.
Once you've queued up these social update actions, you hit update and everything is sent to your social network accounts and they're updated effortlessly.
SocialBlast is a free, ad-supported, application for basic usage. We offer an in-app purchase for SocialBlast Pro which unlocks all of the features and removes the advertisements.

Thanks for checking it out. I debated doing that, heavily, but one of the main features I wanted to add was the sync ability. So if you install SocialBlast on your phone and tablet, you can sync your social accounts across the devices using your SocialBlast account.
I just published version 1.0.1 of SocialBlast to the Android Market. The changes are as follows:
1.0.1 - Released 9/6/11
- Clearing data on the server should not remove your SocialBlast account.
- Remove ScrollView usage on main screen (message box stays, everything else moves).
- Accept incoming photo for sharing.
- (BUG) Better error handling around photos.
- (BUG) Layout issue was causing Facebook friends list to not show up.
- (BUG) On certain devices, the account activity could cause an exception.
SocialBlast sounds really good, i am gonna check it for right away.
Thanks for taking a look!
The next 3 people who post here and have a SocialBlast account, I'll enable the Pro features for them for free.
Just downloaded to check it out, should add apps2sd support because almost 7mb is huge for an app like this. I usually use tweetcaster to post to my fb and twitter accounts. will give this a try and see if I likes, thanks

I'm planning on adding a widget, which is why I haven't enabled app2sd. It's a large package because it contains the background layouts for phones/tablets in one apk package. Thanks for giving it a download!
You could always add apps2sd and a widget, that way theres a choice. if you want to use the widget dont move the apk to the sd card. If you dont wanna use the widget you have the option to move it the sd. I wasnt sure aboiut the colors of the UI but after seeing it on my evo I think its really nicely done!

Very true, and I'll likely go that direction. I do worry that the general Android audience might be confused by that, if they've moved it to SD and try to use a widget, but perhaps it won't be an issue.
Thanks for the feedback!
True about the general android audiences, but also consider storage space on phones aren't plentiful on most phones, some users will see almost 7mb and say thats huge! uninstall cuz some are stupid like that lol. Just tested posting with it, extremely smooth! very nice
Oh also will you enable pro features for me? If not no bigs just wondering

Yes definitely, you're 1 of 3. I've enabled them so if you log out of the app and log back in, you'll be set.
Thank you so very much I think this app found a permanent home on my phone! cant wait to see more improvements ^.^
Can I also get pro?

Which phone are you using? If it lets you report the FC, please do so and say you're from XDA.

No problems logging into FB or Twitter. This app only allows you to post but not browse right? Also, I would like to check out the pro version please.
