Why should Windows Mobile users settle on some second rate version missing key features

It is one reasons id love a blackberry like the storm b/c of the "always on" facebook and the interface. I dont understand why people dont develop more for windows mobile. Its not like they dont push phones like the touch pro. The ones they have now look like they are from 1996 with the graphics.

this is a very closed alpha/proof of concept and no one on the HD is benefiting yet , trust me.
Also I dont wish to use the overrated Xperia panel system on my phone, I just want an official facebook app that I and ALL OTHER Windows Mobile users no matter what device they have, can use.
Now the way I see it, the facebook panel on xperia is pretty much a windows mobile app, and as such should be able to run on any other windows mobile device (with at least VGA screen I suppose.. hence my reward, I cant do it myself, but im sure someone here can, there would be so many grateful WM users too

Hello.
I haven't Snap2face tried myself too much (just downloaded last night!) , and so far it seems to work fine. It's freeware. I'll keep on trying it, and I'd also like to hear from other users opinion.

After I log in on Opera mobile it takes me to the normal 'm.facebook' page?
Just tried Snap2Face or Skybook as its now called...seems pretty good for a standalone app. Probably not as polished as the other version though.

I'm sorry, but I do not consider 'snap2face' or 'skybook' a viable solution. Its slow, its buggy, it has a terrible,terrible layout (icons are often tiny on anything above a QVGA screen) and it makes a mess of its cache.

Can I ask the developers in here.. is there a REASON why the xperia facebook panel cannot be simply extracted and converted into a stand alone app?

Hahahaa. Facebook.

As in your previous thread (started a few months back), everyone is trying to tell you that Windows Mobile devices have more advanced features (of course, no Facebook). So if the only thing you are concerned of is Facebook, well... you could always get an iPhone.
Oh, by the way, then you'll be complaining about unable to send MMS, forward SMS, copy text in SMS, and ect... oh well... you're going to bombard me next.
PS: If I'm a developer, the moment I read your first post in this thread, I'll just ignore you. Maybe you should rephrase your sentences so that people (including developers) feel the need of Facebook application. This way, maybe someone out there would offer his/her help.

No you miss my point. The difference is that we DO have a WM version now.. the xperia facebook panel. No iphone required. I am urging devs on here to merely find a way to convert that panel into a standalone app for all WM users to enjoy.

Pointui ?? A new wm interface ?

Hey guys, dont know if anyone has come across this yet but for those who havent it looks like there may be a new interface for your wm device. Its called Pointui but as yet theres not a lot of info just a youtube vid and some screen shots on flicker, the web site just shows a countdown to what apperes to be the new year but by the look of the screens it might be something to keep your eye on
Youtube link : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pUBWYErW3s
Flicker link :http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/
Web site :http://there-is-no-place-like-home.com/
I must say after having look at it, I'd be very intrested to try this out when its released. It looks very slick
WOW I'm surprised that there has been less buzz about this. I'm intrigued!
Yes, seems to be inspired by the iPhone but no proof to say its a Windows Mobile device?
Regards,
Carty..
If you click on the youtube uploaders username and look at the other vid you can see that its running on a Wizard
Wizard specs..
Processor: OMAP850 - 195Mhz
Memory: 128 MB of ROM and 64 MB of RAM
Should run fine on my Orbit !!
Interesting
Looks promising. I wonder if it is flash driven or C+ coded. A little strange how the video shows him sliding his finger to the right and the screen animation goes left?? That would drive me nuts!

...Also, you'll note very shortly into the demo the "Windows Mobile Settings" menu option...
I watched the video a couple of times and it seems to move very smoothly and quickly. I really like the way it works...........HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR.
Thanks for the positive feedback. I'd say its more inspired by frustration of what I call Windows 3.11 Syndrome and poor excuses for performance because they have limited memory and slower cpus.
Never used an iPhone, sure looks nice. Not sure about user interaction consistency across all their apps which is something we hope to achieve with our framework.
Rest assured this is running on Windows Mobile. Unlike so many others we haven't forgotten those with Windows Mobile 2003.

Wow--amazing ui. I share your frustration with the Win 3.11 syndrome but I hate that other people keep using the iPhone comparison. The iPhone is like a new puppy--everyone loves it because it's cute and could do simple things (email, web, music, movies, pictures, oh calls too). After awhile, then what? Everyone here can name 100 things their PDA/Phone can do more than the iPhone--except on tiny little thing....and that's doing it with style! Swipe here, roll there, flip here, touch there, whatever which way.
Pointui will complete my PDA and will probably get more people to buy a Win Mobile device now that it's balanced with usability and functionality. Thanks, can't wait for Jan 1.
Dorothy, can you give us any idea as to when you'll be offering this up to the public, and are you planning this as a freeware app or will you be charging for use?
simplicity05, the answers to your questions can be found at there-is-no-place-like-home.com
I checked that just a few hours ago and all it had was a timer counting down to the new year haha!
Oh My God. This looks so freaking sweet!
Im sure you guys have clicked it but heres the link to the pointui main site http://www.pointui.com/
Says it will be available for download as soon as the clock from no place like home reaches 0. Wooo.
If it runs that fast on a 195mhz device, thats great news. All these iPhone clones run slow on my 247mhz orbit (overclocked) ... so, looking forward to this one.
Im back again
Just watched this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRw1T-N5dic
Seems it uses the standard WM phone pad, which sucks, hope they do there own phone pad/full phone system thing. Also, wonder how the text messages/email is handles, hopefully not the standard WM outlook??? Any guys in the know about this?
The scrolling/changing screens by sliding your finger seems counter-intuitive. I like how on my touch I grab and pull to the side of the cube I want, this Pointui looks like it is grab and push towards the place you want to go, very awkward...
Other than that, it looks very interesting!
Actually I think that scrolling the finger to go to the next screen is really sleek and intuitive.
And the speed is amazing! Really smooth, even on a Wizard! OMFG! These guys know how to program
From the screenshots and video I only miss some antialiasing on some text (top text saying "telstra", and some text on the initial screen), and it would be great to integrate further apps into Home, like the phone and messages (read, write, send).
I think this will be, again, one of those applications that disappoint the moment I press one of the "system menu" buttons and end up in the WM6 menu without any transition.
Becaus then, it just doesn't make any sense... Man, being all happy that you can go through the menu with your finger just to find out that if you REALLY want to make system changes you have to use the old stylus again sucks.
I think all the iPhone cloning is a massive backleash...

[REQ]Read It Later App for WM

I use the Read It Later extension for Firefox heavily, and have always missed an WM App that would allow me to read the pages I've marked on my phone.
Well, since I've bought the HD2 I've missed this even more...
Now, it seems that the folks that makes RIL released an API so that anyone can make its own app...
There's an official one for the iPhone, a user made for Android... and none for WM.
I've tried to make one myself, but its way beyond my "search and learn with Google" programing skills.
This way, I want ask if someone is interested or is capable of doind a Read It Later App for WM, HD2 customized, using their API.
The site is here: http://readitlaterlist.com/
It would be really nice to have a "Instapaper" like app for WM...
Thanks in advance!
Request seconded.
without looking at exactly what this is. do you mean an offline browser? if so then opera has the function built in.. saved pages

It's not only saved pages...
It's like Instapaper for the iPhone.
You mark a page to read later in RIL Firefox, for example, and then can access the link throught the app in the phone to read it.
The good thing about RIL is that you can mark a page in your desktop and it sincronizes with web, so, as soon as you open RIL in the phone the page is already there.
The advantage here is that you can mark pages to read in multiple PCs (I use in Vista/7 installarion in my notebook as well as XP/7 in my desktop) and still have a unified list.

It is very nice.
ATM i'm using the web version, with the shortcut readitlaterlist.com/unread . When you create an account, this shortcut will lead you directly to the reading list.
Putting Opera zoom in 100%, it fits right in the screen.
But it lacks a lot of features. It is actually just a list of links. You have to manually check read itens, press and hold the link if you want to open in another tab.
What I miss the most is some options to store the pages for future references. Now I have to manually do this... It would be nice if the app allow us to send the pages to another apps...

Thanks anyway... I'm kind of resign that this won't be done.
Using the web version. Not perfect, but does the job.
I have not used this application/service before, but it looks interesting.
I have checked the API and it looks very simple to use.
The only thing that remains before starting to code is to have a rough design of the application GUI, just to set a rough scope on the functionalities.
Then I believe it is possible to create an "ugly" but functional application in a few days. I can work on this project if I can manage to allocate some spare time on this.
zefiltrin, I think you know the usage scenarios of this application way better than me, as I have not yet used it. Why not make a few sketches for describing the GUI of the application you want to see on your PPC. I mean the buttons, lists, etc. Then I would try to realize them (again, if I can manage to allocate some spare time on this)

I´ll do that! I'm travelling until april 4th, but will try to do that as soon as I come back.
I think I´ll use some of the screeshots of the existing apps for iPhone and Android.
Thank you for your help!
Well, here are some ideas:
I think the home screen should look like iPhone's Read It Later app:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
The list of things to read could be similar to GReader site, with big letters, two or more lines to allow seing the whole title:
In the "Greader-like" list abobe, there shoud be a search bar and the buttons to direclty mark as read or show the text only view, like this:
Finally, it would be great to have the sharing options like iPhone app (don´t know if the API allow that):
Let me know if this helps...
Ok I will spend some time on this tomorrow.
I started working on this project, I call it "Late Reader" for now. Any better name suggestions are welcome. I think I can post a first beta or alpha in a week.

Mine also says 1.007 after the update, but I can see that the application itself has changed since the update. There are some options available now, that wasn't before I upgraded...
So my guess is, that it's in fact 1.1 even though it says it's still 1.007.

Or you could install the Sony Ericssons X2 Panel Manager and the Facebook panel... it's by far the best Facebook app on the device!
Thanks for alternative facebook links.
lite.facebook.com worked perfectly!
the lite site doesn't let you post comments unless you've already commented on them. not entirely sure why. I just wish microsoft would get their ass in gear and give the facebook app a radical overhaul : with no live feed, only one comment showing and a very badly thought out user interface it makes the user experience about as pleasant to use as a skipping rope made of razor wire.

Problem is that the Facebook API (public) doesn't allow authentication through a mobile application.. only Windows Apps or Web-sites. And you also get some reduced functionality when using it on a mobile.. Guess Microsoft got som extra treatment from Facebook to release the app....
If they would open up the API more for mobile apps, I'm sure we'd see all kinds of facebook apps bubbling up to the surface.
i too am waiting for a decent app that lets me "like" and comment and view comments ect. the best iv founx so far is FIM from mosko mobi its a fb chat client with a simple fb mobile browser built it but the best bit is that any notifications pop up in htc's notification bar (when the apps running ofcourse) its not the best app in the world but it will do till winmo gets one liks the iphone. hope this helps
SO yeah, this X2 Facebook app is much better, and super smooth. Smoother than the iPhone one I think. And it looks quite nice too

email client skin or theme?

Hi
Does anyone know if it's possible to install a theme or skin, or possibly a manila add-on which would sexy-up the WM email client? I'm not talking about Flexmail or Profimail (they look like a step backwards - pocket pc, get out yer stylus).
I'm talking about a cosmetic dress up of the existing client (which I use with MS exchange for work, and hotmail for personal) to make it look more in keeping with the Sense UI, or what we've seen for WP7 or even (gasp!) the email client on the iphone.
I've tried searching, but all that comes up is flexmail (yuck!).
It's strange, all the messing about with themes, manila etc, but the email app is something I use probably more than any other on my phone and yet it hasn't fundamentally changed in 10 years. Any suggestions, greatly appreciated.
Stoatie ...

Well it is possible to skin the mail and SMS tabs on your HD2s, but unfortunatly what you are asking for is impossible if you dont want to have a new app or something similar

believe me I have taken a look into it. You can easily modify the appearance of your mail and sms tab. There are like 30-40 manila files that can be changed. But the problem is, that these changes wont affect the general behaviour like having speech bubbles or something like that. They would only change some little icons and maybe two or three other little visual gimicks but nothing more.
To achieve anything like the screenshots I saw in your link you would either have to write a new mailing or messaging app or change the way windows mobile 6.5(.x) behaves in general and I dont know anyone who is actually able to do that. Might be that Cookie was able to do that, but since he is no longer available for this kind of work, I think that you will have to come to peace with your current mailing or messaging tabs

Might be that Cookie was able to do that, but since he is no longer available for this kind of work, I think that you will have to come to peace with your current mailing or messaging tabs

once again !! I dont think you are getting the point !
I am not talking about the HTC Sense TABS like the messaging and email but instead I am talking about the default Email Client that has been there with us since Windows Mobile 6.
I had a talk with another developer and according to him...his skin also skinned the default Windows Mobile SMS app as well as the Email client.
Somewhat like this.

So...I dont think this has anything to do with Manilla. Getting the point ??
All that needs to be changed is the following UI.

Hi to All and specifically to Singaporeans,
Do you live in Singapore and are quite peeved that you cant read straits times in your Windows Mobile handset?
Well this is the app for you. With UI similar to metro, it allows you to read full articles without the need to visit Straits Times' website on your phone.
Now with offline reading capabilities for your transit needs!
The app needs CF3.5 and is created with the help of the excellent sliderlist by Obelix_A
Current Features
- read full articles available from StraitsTimes.com Free
- view pictures and captions related to the articles
- change font size for articles
- offline syncing
- low-bandwidth mode (by displaying images only when articles are read)
- auto updater
Planned Features
- reading of articles from a specific date
- bookmarking articles
Known Bugs/Issues
- application is known to crash for Omnia2 and OmniaPro devices, upon a selection of a section

i would appreciate feedback and feature-requests.
GOOD JOB!
I'm SO downloading this.
thanks for the support
Some initial comments and thoughts about this app:
- The tick at the top right feels naturally clickable. I guess that's because to the average windows phone user, that top right has always either been an "OK" or a "X" so it's somewhat natural to assume whatever icon is on the top right is clickable
- The physics of the flow of the menu items are very very sensitive. If I drag them for a distance equivalent to half of my screen height, they disappear for quite some time before they bounce back. It is also kind of laggy. I understand alot of this has to do with windows mobile OS itself, so I'm not blaming you on this. This is really a good UI effort.
Otherwise this application feels way beyond good comparing with the average windows mobile application. Its metro-like UI is REALLY appealing for a change for my windows mobile device. All functions are working great and browsing the news is a pleasure.
Definitely recommend this app to any windows mobile users in Singapore. I'm gonna spread this app to some friends and partners of mine in Microsoft. I'm sure they will be impressed with this! Good work!
Tested on: HTC Touch Diamond 2 (Topaz) running Windows Mobile 6.5

ahhh its the sync icon. will display some other icon instead of the tick in next releases... did not occur to be since i been using 6.5.3 for some time

did not really got to test it with resistive devices. But much of the credit for the physics of the slider goes to Obenix. I think he has done a great job with that wonderful control. i would refer to him on the matter of being able to lower the sensitivity for non capacitive models
Otherwise this application feels way beyond good comparing with the average windows mobile application. Its metro-like UI is REALLY appealing for a change for my windows mobile device. i was hugely inspired and loved metro UI when it came out. was around the same time when i was designing the backend, so heck decided it should follow the WP7 design elements.
The A + or - was orignially a feature request from 'wm007' of mobinauts, credits to him for that idea. Will follow your advice and add the option to change the font size for all other windows in the next release as well. thanks

lol chris chin knows about it, am waiting for market place approval before i proceed to submit the other local news outlets apps (unoffical)

Most of the best pillars of this app would not be without the input or ideas of fellow users. thanks once again for the input.
oh ya, and here is the app compared against other variants on other platforms:
I have tried it on Omnia II and the application is well designed but abit of laggyness in scrolling up and down in the tiles section and the stories text section, if u reach the very end of the text, and overscrolls it, it will take a while to jump back to the text area. Overall i find the application simple and light
Btw, i noe the app through aeronex haha...
Wow! Great! Haha I guess the developers network for Windows Mobile in Singapore is indeed quite small! ^^ I know of several other windows mobile developers also working with not only Chris but also many other peeps in Microsoft.
In any case, The HD2 has the most capable processor, so I'm not entirely sure if it's a very fair test, but I can definitely vouch that this user interface is the best I've seen. I love it!
Apologies about the font + and - actually. I just realized that your app already has the small and big "A"s which in my opinion is more than enough. Very strange I missed that just now, apologies ^^

the only other wm i have is a LGKS20, it has the bounce lag issue. Also the part where the screen is QVGA and cannot "sense" the clicks on tiles. news loading times are averge. lol will do a comparison with all 4 devices next time

i am glad its working for you. i am still trying to find a permanent fix for my other samsung users who face the "outofmemoryexception". Do let me know if the app hangs for your device or what nots errors. So far this problem seems peculiar to the two samsung devices only.
Okae. Yeah, Ismael. The other Chris ^^
lol ya
anyhow, on a side note, got a nice email with some good news from microsoft this morning
Great! All the best for that!
ops, haha after the second try of the app and after i click on a news title to load a full story, i experienced a out of memory exception, it will go on and on even if i restart the application. Would you want the error details?
haha not to worry, am looking into that issue. hope to get it sorted out by this weekend
Congratulations on being featured on the frontpage! Read it on the twitter widget on my nexus this afternoon!
lol did not know until you informed me bro. wow, XDA is as supportive as what i always heard them to be. Thanks
Ooooops... this should be on the general apps forum instead of TOPAZ forum???
DLing....
Think there's more than one thread about this ^^
