Hey XperiaX10iUser,
Like your work. Helped me go from first time AT&T smartphone user 3 weeks ago, to unbranded-rooted 2.1 X10 A, now with sdk and adb capabilities. Still confused as @#$%, but learning more each day. This list is for 1.6, but updated in November...can it be used for 2.1?

Hi.
Glad to have helped. I would say so, it would obviously be better if it covered 2.1 but the descriptions of what does what and if it can be removed should apply to both. I'm still learning too btw, there's a lot happening for the X10 right now so it's opened up a whole new World so to speak.

I wanted to try and use Droid Explorer and abd method for my first time(thanks to ABD for Noobs). Once I got all the sdk tools saved and DE recognized my phone, I did a > select all > copy > paste > of my entire internal drive including sdcard and made a copy in a new folder on my desktop. It seemed to copy all the files, but when I accidentally deleted some of the 2.1 Sync apps and part of Goggle .gapps (I don't remember the entire file names) and went to use abd to push an app back on to the phone I opened the file it was completely empty. What did I do wrong? What folders of the drive do I need to copy and how do I save them, so I can use them individually to push apps back on the phone?
I had to to re-flash using SEUS to get a complete ROM. After I reflashed I realized the phone needed to be rooted in order to use Droid Explorer. Z4root was saved in my sd card, but was unable to figure out how to install them from my PC. I ended up setting up wifi and google account to use the Market to install a file explorer, and opened z4root that way. How do you install apks in a phone that has not been rooted from a computer?

I Fixed it
A few small things:
Intel should be intel.
Under CPU Optimization:
"Samsung’s CPU is set by default the run at 1gHz."
The should be to.
Sideloading:
"(don’t forget that after you install it from the market you still have to go to your app drawer and run busybox once so it installs)."
Should this be after you download it from the market?
ClockworkMod Recovery:
"ClockworkMod written for us by a developer that goes by the name of Koush"
Missing is.
"This gent puts a ton of work into helping us captivate owners out"
Replace puts with put and Capitalize Captivate.
Changing Your Messaging Ringtone:
"well the ones that matter anyway.."
Extra period.
Other than that, excellent guide. I'll definitely be using it when my Captivate arrives.

Thanks! I fixed all those errors but I'm not gonna upload the new version just yet because I will keep finding more errors so it just seems wasteful. I did not actually write most of the guide myself I just formatted it so there may be some mistakes I didn't pick up on.

Hi,
Thanks for publishing this. It looks very useful, similar to Energy ROM.. But I am very new to Android phones (trying this on Samsung Captivate from AT&T, bought yesterday). I am running windows 7 ultimate 64bit and I exactly followed this guide. But somehow I am still not able to see the sd card. I tried placing the update.zip at Computer\SGH-I897\Phone and shut down the phone and tried restarting the phone by holding the up/down keys as well as power button. But after selecting reinstall packages it said could not find /sdcard/update.zip.. Pls held. Again very sorry if I did some mistake..

The SD card is simply the root directory of your phone. You do not need to open a folder, it is the highest folder you can place it in. Hope that helps
Somehow it was not able to find the sdcard root. Then I realized that you mentioned something called as Droid Explorer, I searched for it and installed it on my PC. But when I opened Droid Explorer, my device was not recognized, then I clicked on link on the explorer window, upon watching that video I enabled the USB Debugging, then I was able to see my device, then I selected connect to my device. After that I saw an explorer but it had empty root and I was not able to copy anything. There was a menu button at the top row named "Transfer to device or Copy to device" I selected that and selected update.zip file and tried to transfer. Something happened but still explorer was empty. Then from my phone Top slide down menu I selected mount USB storage and I started seeing windows explorer on my PC. Then apart from other folders I could see a folder sd in the root. Then I again put update.zip in the root.
Then followed the restart sequence, this time it found the file but exited after Signal 7. It was trying to asert something but could not find the correct model number I guess. My cell phone's model number is Samsung i897.
Please help

I did not write the PC instructions, so I can not help you (I only have a Mac). But the person who did can probably help you his username is systoxity.
Because not enough errors were found to make it worthwhile to update the PDF i will wait till tomorrow to fix the minor errors.
Good source of information
Thank you for putting this together. I am going to sticky this for the time being.
For installing the latest version of busy box, you should include that before the instructions for running titanium backup...the latest version of busybox installed from the market will work with titanium backup so theres no need to have to click the "problems" button...this way you wont have to do the busybox download step twice...should also save a few megs since titanium backup wont have its own copy of busybox installed BTW nice guide
You can also just mount the phone memory using windows explorer and move the file over. I was never able to get droid explorer to transfer the file. It always said it went but then was never there.
Anyway all I did was connected just as I was going to connect to kies but then when windows asked me what I wanted to do I clicked on open file view and dropped updated.zip on my phone.
Only issue that I had with rooting was I accidentally opened the file in windows(winrar). After I moved the file over it found it and attempted to install it but then exited with an error(do not remember exact error), but had to do with mounting. Anyway I re-downloaded file and saw file size was different. After I moved the file over again everything went great. I still haven't removed bloat-ware and such but thats next on the agenda.
Also I was on windows 7 64 bit, saw some other users in other threads saying they had issues connecting the phone. Everything so far has worked great for me
Thank you very much for this handy pdf file!
Somelinks aren't working
First of all I have to say very good guide for noobs!
1. when I downloaded the update.zip folder I didn't work I guess because the name of Samsung captivate is not in the folder or something. So I just downloaded the other file from the forums.
2. Link to CPU optimization doesn't work.
3. I downloaded the droid explorer. It connected to my phone but I was unable to transfer anything. So I just tapped on the USB connected in the notification bar and mounted the phone. This allowed me to use windows explorer to transfer files. I believe one can transfer files by selecting the option of Samsung Kies under USB settings.
I got all your feedback. It will all be corrected by tomorrow night.
Cool guide however the rumor is the GPS only gets turned on when pulling up an App that uses it, so that step in the "battery saving" section might not be necessary.
Also you may want to replace Market Enabler with Market Access. It's a rehash of Market Enabler but also has a Set on Boot option that keeps it persistent versus being reset each time.
You also Might want to add a Tips/Tricks Section..
Here You can put some cool tips like the one i found out about backlight control.

[Q] late night phone spaghetti. x10 mini pro help please!

Hi everyone,
I'm looking for some pointers on the path to 2.1 on my x10 Mini Pro, and hoping the wealth of knowledge between you all can set some things straight for me?
I'll apologise in advance if I ramble at all or don't make much sense... I've been browsing forums for hours and am suffering from mild cross-eyedness and slight brainfreeze.
The scenario;
I have an x10 mini pro, running 1.6, on Vodafone UK. Yes, the ONLY network that have not yet provided the 2.1 update for x10mp users. The phone was rooted with universal androot and also had astro file manager and titanium installed. For about three months I have had the 'starting download' hang problem in Market which I have not been able to fix. I hadn't really wasted much time on it as it was of little importance at the time however I now want to update some things and can't. Today I got annoyed and did a factory reset, hoping to resolve the problem. It didn't, and now I have a blank canvas of a phone.
I didn't back up before doing the reset as call logs and txts are of less importance that the files on my sd card, which remain untouched. I don't really have any other 'important' stuff on the phone right now.
I realised shortly after that I had a backup from December which I ran, as a last ditch attempt, this did not restore my lost applications, but did restore some user data. I noted that my root privileges and titanium were gone too
B*gger it, I thought, since I've lost all my data I may as well go for a generic NON-Vodafone installation of Android 2.1, and hopefully that will also fix the Market issue.
I've had a look on forums here and would like to run the 2.0.2.a.0.24 firmware posted by shivenjuneja.
I've downloaded this via pc, and understand I need to also install the flashtool and xrecovery, both of which I have downloaded and saved in a folder on my laptop.
Now remember, market was not an option so I've downloaded universal androot via pc too and have saved this to the root of the SD card.
With my primitive blank phone, I am unable to browse to it without a file manager, so now I need to download Astro File Manager again.
I decide to have a probably fruitless attempt of doing this via the market (because saving it on the SD card is pointless as I need it installed in order to browse to it!) and much to my amazement, it's worked!! Woohoo Market is working again! But hell, I've still lost everything on my phone so I'll perservere with my android update, thank you very much.
Ok, now while waiting for Astro to download, I remember that I've also read on the forum that the upgrade to 2.1 is likely to be stuck in a booting loop if I upgrade with user data on the phone. If I do a factory restore I will lose my file manager and root privileges that I will shortly be installing, right?
So now, at this hour, I'm wondering exactly what order I need to do everything in to get 2.1 on my phone.
To install 2.1 I need to install the flash tool and xrecovery. To install those I need root, to root I need Astro and before doing any of this I need a phone that has no user data on it.
D4mn you Vodafone.
Could anyone advise the best method to do all of the above i.e in what order to do it all, or point out if there is anything obvious I haven't accounted for.
I don't usually have a problem with this sort of thing, hopefully it will look clearer tomorrow!
Thanks in advance
K
Also, does registering your google login to use the Market count as 'user data' when you upgrade? I ask as I may need to download and install Astro again from the market, if it's still working after another reset?
A lot of view and no replies? I could really use your advice guys if anyone could oblige...
From further reading I understand that I need busybox to install xrecovery and that I also need to be on 2.1 054 as xrecovery won't install on 1.6?
Is this correct?
It sounded so simple initially to flash from 1.6 to the latest version of 2.1, whereas now I need this to install that, need to be on the later version to install the app I need to use to flash to the next version up, and have to have a bunch of other apps and tools installed in order to the able to run anything!
All I want is a rooted 2.1 with all the network and SE bundled crap removed, so I can start putting my phone back to how I bl00dy want it with the apps I choose!
I hate you Vodafone. IhateyouIhateyouIhaveyouIhateyou

[Q] two apk files removed during oneclick root

hi all. new user to xda forums.
a brief history of my foray into the upgrade and root realm:
i have an samsung epic 4g. i just updated to froyo eb13 from eclair. i used the update.zip from samsung and everything went smooth without a hitch. ( i even backed up my SD card before the update to be sure i didn't lose anything on it in case i had to reformat it.)
i decided i wanted root to backup my phone so i went with the oneclick 2.5.5 procedure. i tried it on ubuntu 10.04 using the SDK but it didn't want to work. adb wasn't an issue so it was something else...i didn't bother researching why it didn't work on linux so i jumped on my windows xp sp3 machine where the root process worked without a hitch.
during the root process two apk files are removed:
/system/app/Asphalt5_DEMO_ANMP_Samsung_D700_Sprint_ML.apk
/system/app/FreeHDGameDemos.apk
so i'm on froyo eb13, i have root and everything seems ok.
i tried searching on the apk file names here on the forums but didn't see anything which really explained things for me.
questions i'm hoping someone can explain:
1. why are these files removed? is it because there isn't enough space?
(the only thing i could find was this thread but it doesn't pertain to the oneclick root process per se: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=882567.)
2. will these files be needed in the future for other 'updates'?
since my main goal was rooting to back up my phone completely including all the apk files, it seems the root process took out two before i could get them backed up. this isn't a problem as i can get the apk files from another source.
thanks in advance for any explanations.

part of the joy of rooting is getting rid of some of the annoying apps that come stock on most phones from your carrier.
A lot of roms when installed will place the removed apk's in afolder on your SD card called "removed apk's", you can navigate to that folder with file explorer and reinstall them if you want to.
That is assuming that your new ROM did that for you.

What ROM are you running?
After more playing around and using CWM 3x, it appears this is how those 'hacks' need to function in order to install busybox. Since there isn't enough space within /system/app, something must be removed. Those two apk files are removed which in turn allows busybox (later in the install process) to exist.
I've since installed SyndicateRom Frozen Takiya 1.1.0 which removed all sprint and samsung bloatware (apk files) etc. For the two apk files I've needed (myfiles and memo), I've pushed those back using SdxAppRemover-1.5. If I need anything relating to the sprint or samsung apk files in the future to upgrade, I'll need to Odin back to stock at this point.

[Q] Deleted important system files. help!

I have a motorola xt300 aka spice. It runs on android 2.1 but has a locked bootloader.
What I basically did was delete/uninstall some important files (gtalk, motoblurhome). Really stupid of me.......I factory reset hoping to have the files back but the phone completely deleted those apks so I cant exactly go into settings or access into of my apps. Currently USB debugging is disabled so I cant use adb shell. And since Gtalk is no longer there I cant install a home replacement because android market doesnt work anymore. I downloaded a romdump and renamed it to update.zip and put it onto my sd card. but when i tried flashing it, it said something along the lines of "file can not be read". after opening it up with winrar i saw a folder inside it that had the system apks in something called "system.tar". Is that right?
I'm pretty new to android (had this phone about 3 months) and Im not sure i can fix it by myself!! Help!

Bought on Craigslist, Factory reset it, Many default apps are gone, Lots of issues?

Hey Guys,
Brand new to XDA and new to messing with my phone in anyway, I looked through some threads, but am not sure if I can mess something up worse by not following the right steps,
I basically bought a used phone on craigslist, AT&T LG G FLEX 2 - LG-H950 and when I factory reset it, many of the default apps are not installed, cannot use my calendar and the phone is just a little off all together.
Not sure if the phone is still rooted or if the factory reset cleared it, and I am all together worried that the only reason the kid sold it to me was because he messed it up and couldn't fix it and just pawned it off to my dumas
I know its frowned upon to start new threads when the answers are out there, but i need this for work ASAP and if I screw it up and cant use it all Ill have to go back to my work iPhone (last resort, i hate it)
I started to follow hyelton's video http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2785089
but got cold feet when i couldnt find my exact model the h950
It is currently on the android 5.0.1 and when i tried the update before i reset it, it said i couldn't update it something about the root. So i reset it and everything is the same as when I bought it on CraigList.
How do I get it back to square one, like it came in the box. I am interested in learning how to root and be in control of my own property, but I just want to get back to the start safely without bricking it so I can follow the forums and not feel so helpless.
im sorry if the first response to this just point me to another thread, but I will appreciate even that much guidance so at least i know i am headed in the right direction
Thanks a lot xda community
Branden
Factory reset won't remove root BTW. Recent Android phones seem to perform an integrity check prior to updating that fails when root is present.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3171550
Just read that to get the phone back to stock, then you'll be able to upgrade to 11x (5.1.1) and eventually 11z.

cool, thanks, one more question
I made an account with MEGA
downloaded the Flex2Tool 1.4.1 and unzipped
downloaded the system.img.gz
Started watching your video. however i am not bricked.
it has missing default apps and it says this device is suspected in rooting, software update is not available for rooted device.
so what is my first step after downloading these files. do i connect phone to my computer and open up the flex2tool and
select variant 1 which is H950 v10d etc
then do I select 1 , ( i do not need anything on the phone.)
or move straight to variant 2. restore unroot stock system.
if i do that next where do I put the system.img.gz file on my phone. anywhere in the internal memory and before or after I reset it?
sorry for all the questions and thanks for all the help. i am very new to doing anything besides calling or texting on my phone

1. You first need the LG USB drivers for the Flex to be installed
2. The system image file (gz) will have a .img file inside that's about 4GB, so unzip the one you downloaded with 7zip, preferably from a PC. Put the .img file on the root of the phone's internal memory before proceeding. You'll also want USB debugging enable and disable the verify over USB option
3. Once file is on phone you can continue with the tool, it will eventually go into download mode & show ## when finished

okay i did that but
I dont understand your last thing >>>>"You'll also want USB debugging enable and disable the verify over USB option"
when i have my usb connected the phone gives three options
1.Charge Phone
via usb
2.Media Sync (MTP)
3.Send images (PTP)
When restarting the recovery tool after img. has been installed to root of internal storage. do i just start program or do i need to turn off phone or reset it or just run it with the MTP

Like that. Check that the USB debugging icon shows in the notification area while USB is connected as MTP. Then you can start the tool. Be sure that the .img is present on the root(sdcard0) prior to letting the tool reboot the phone.

Probably a good idea. I think the previous owner was trying to delete some of the bloatware and didn't properly restore the phone before selling it, not sure if that was done purposely or not.

okay, i reset it but still dont have default apps
the default apps for the calendar which was my original issue still is not there, just a generic Android icon. because there is no default it will not allow me to sync calendars, also no default messaging app.
not sure if this just put me back to 5.0.1 which is where already was but i am still missing default apps to make the phone run smoothly,
any ideas on what i may have done wrong

Icon is a blank paper folded too right corner and reads system.img.gz and 1.6 gb which is what I copied to the root storage and then followed everything else and did it again starting from scratch and still have generic icon without the default apps like calendar, browser, and messaging. I'm trying tho. Been reading forums since last night with no luck
I do appreciate everyone's help tho,
And ace there is no calendar under apps

You need to unzip that file
.gz like .rar or .zip are different types of compression, so download the latest version of winrar or use 7zip, you need the system.img file (4gb)
Sent from my Redmi Note 2
THANKS
