[Q] How to sync Google Contacts - General Questions and Answers

So, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes too this stuff.
Basically all I want to do is be able to sync my google contacts to my phone.
I'm running CyanogenMod on a HTC Hero.
I'm at the Server Settings screen where it asks for:
Domain/Username:
My Username Here
Password:
*******
Server:
gmail.com
EDIT:
Sorry, I figured it out.
That's how I have it set up and when I attempt to go to the next screen it says "Setup could not finish: Unable to open connection to the server."

mini S setup nightmare...

Hi everyone
I just recently bought an o2 XDA mini S and I just can not seem to get it to connect to the internet or check my pop3 email.
Keeps coming back with the following error message:
Cannot Connect
Dialed: mobile.o2.co.uk
No Modem at above number. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap Settings.
I have triple checked all the settings which were emailed to me by o2 - WAP, GPRS and MMS settings and all seem to have been entered correctly but dont work.
If anyone can help me Id be very greatful...Ive tried everything I can think of but am not getting anywhere with this
Thank you in advance
This is the gprs settings I use and it works
O2 GPRS settings (Email/Web):
Homepage: http://pda.o2.co.uk/
APN address: mobile.o2.co.uk
Username: mobileweb
Password: password
Email servers (POP): mail.o2.co.uk
Email servers (SMTP): smtp.o2.co.uk
Note: The "Mobile Web" service must be enabled for these settings to work.
* We've also been told of an alternative username of 'faster', with a password of 'password'
under connections\settings\my isp\manage existing connections make sure when it says select a modem - have cellular line (gprs) selected. And make sure O2 have mobileweb enabled at their end for your account. Their no is 202.
Next time better to post in wizard forum - you will get more responses.
I'll keep an eye on this post in case U need more help.
Hi Cath
Just try removing the SIM card wiping on something soft and all should work (but as above you must be on the correct tariff)

HTC HD2 Email Error Synchronizing

Hi All,
Sorry if the answer is somewhere I have tried my best for searching through forums but couldn't find any solution.
I have bought an HTC HD2 was on O2 but got it unlocked.
I'm using it with Orange. The internet and everything seems to work perfectly fine but I can't get emails through internet. Everytime I get the same message i.e. Error Synchronizing" cannot connect with current connection settings. To change your connection settings, tap Settings.
It's the same message either I try to access my yahoo email, googlemail or hotmail.
I have tried changing internet settings, email settings but no success.
Funnily enough I get email with no problems once my HTC HD2 is connected through WiFi.
I'll be very thankful to you if anyone could help my sorting out my frustration.
Thnx
Was having same problem - Try this-
Hi,
I think I was having the same problem today (HTC HD2 on T-Mobile). I had Outlook synchronization working fine to my work email, however when I tried to setup an IMAP connection to my ISP email (PlusNet) I was getting the error you mention.
After some experminentation/research I found the answer (for me):
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=302066&page=4
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just had this issue on my new HTC Touch Pro (on T-Mobile UK) stock rom.
I've been pulling my hair out over this for a few hours and FINALLY solved it. For me the issue seem that when T-Mobile downloads all its settings to the phone the Internet service is called "T-Mobile Internet" where the email settings aare trying to use "Internet" (which then no longer exists).
So in short - this is how I fixed it...
At you mail inbox: Menu > Tools > Options > Click ur email account > Edit Account Setup > press Next until you get to the Outgoing (SMTP) Mail server settings page > Click the Advanced Server Settings link at the bottom > change Network connection to your internet provider instead of the default "Internet" (e.g. mine's "T-Mobile Internet") > carry on thorugh the pages until finished. It should now connect without the Error Synchronising message.
Hope this helps save someone some time somewhere!

Thanks
Nice one Lloydy I was having exactly the same problem. My phone now works perfectly. I definately appreciated your post.
thanks!!
perfect man
Back to the HD2 for a minute... I have exactly this problem, and the Telstra ROM in my HD2 does not give me quite the same menu options as described above. For example there is no "advanced" option in the mail outgoing server setup page. Where else can I find it??
TIA

same here, can we have more detailed instructions on the htc hd2, there isnt and advanced option even with stock rom. Please make this clearer
I was having the same problem, only switching it to T Mobile Data instead of T Mobile Internet (which is what it was set on) worked...maybe it's just the switch and forcing the connection to recalibrate itself is what works...
Love this forum.
Thanks guys, worked great, yey!
Just figured it out and it works now - woohoo!!
To get to the "advanced" setting in the email config.
Click Start
Click email (in the programs menu page)
Highlight your email account (eg gmail)
click menu
select options
click gmail
click 'edit account setup'
click next/next/next.. until the smtp setup page
click 'advanced server settings'
select the proper network connection (eg Telstra internet)
Then done next/next/finish
And voila you can synchronise
Thanks Lloydy - I have also been pulling my hair out. Just one question though. Will emails be sent/received by wi-fi if wi-fi if is connected rather than using up data allowances of 3g/gprs. I tried going into the setting and turning off the data connection and then send/reeive email but the phone has a habit of turning the data connection back on on its own.
Another big thanks from me. Sorted my sync problem at last.
I'm on Q-Tel Hala (pre-paid) out in Qatar.
I've bookmarked this page for future reference.
Cheers, John

Oh man, you are GOD! Last 10 days iam trying to setup mail and finally i found your post. Thanks a lot!

yahoo mail, how?? / background from personal jpegs

Yahoo
Hey guys and gals, how do i receive/send or in any way use my yahoo mail account without the need of yahoo mail Plus!?
It's a big problem for me because it's the only email i use and i don't want to have to log in via browser...
is there an app of whatever, just how do i set it up!? please help
Background
How do i setup my background to a personal jpg picture without the need of always cropping the picture (i would adjust the right resolution via my PC)
to have your yahoo account work with any mobile phone, including android phones, you first need to change your yahoo account so that it uses Yahoo! Asia. Follow the steps below:
login to yahoo email
click Options -> Account-> Add or edit an account
click on Account Information from the menu on the left
change Preferred Content to Yahoo Asia
log out and then log in again
the create a new account in the Email application on your phone
fill in your email and password and then click Manual setup
Change POP to IMAP
username should be your yahoo username
IMAP server: imap.mail.google.com
Port: 993
security type: SSL (always)
Click next
SMT server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Port: 465
Security type: SSL (always)
That's it. There is only one thing to note here. This works only with mobile networks and not with WiFi. Yahoo has some sort of deal to only access yahoo imap servers through mobile networks
hope this helps
thanks a bunch, i'll give it a try, that would be a lifesaver...and i don't mind not using wifi for mail since wifi is mostly awailable to me only at home and i can access yahoo on my pc so no worries there
any comment about the background?
hm...ssjowowo i have a problem, i'd appreciate a little more help
i followed your steps and i entered this:
Change POP to IMAP
username should be your yahoo username
IMAP server: imap.mail.google.com
Port: 993
security type: SSL (always)
but after clicking next it says: "Setup could not finish - Unable to open connection to server"
I used the pre-installed "Email" app in x10.
I had one more proble which is maybe causing the first one. In the yahoo setup i couldn't find "change Preferred Content to Yahoo Asia", where is that located exactly? What i did instead is changed the regional settings to Yahoo Asia! hoping that that's what you meant. I can give you screen shots if you'd like?
Do you use wifi or 3G/GPRS? Remember it won't work over wifi. Try using some of the other options for security type if nothing else works
sorry Astral07 didn't read you whole message. you have to change your location to Asia for this to work. I can write a more detailed guide when i get off work
No problem man, thank you for helping...a more detailed guide would be great
anyhu, this is what i've got
Your yahoo is now set in Asia. That's corect. Now on your phone follow this guide:
1) On the email app, enter your email add and password. Then click 'Manual setup' below the screen.
2) Click 'POP'
3) For username enter your full email address. ex: [email protected]
4) Next enter your password
5) POP3 server: pop.mail.yahoo.com
6)Port: 995
7) Security type: SSL (Always)
8) Delete email from server: Never
9) SMTP server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
10) Port: 465
11) Security type: SSL (Always)
12) Put a check on 'Require sign-in'
then if you are asked again just re enter your username and password
done!
thanks but after step 8.) i press next and i get: "Setup could not finish - Username or password incorrect."
i entered it like 5 times, i know my password very well i've also tried ucing just the username without the @yahoo.com but that didn't work either
what the hell is wrong...?
the username should have @yahoo.com
Are u connected on the internet? If you are using 3G try using wlan. It should work
i tried with @yahoo.com, no go
ofc i'm connected i tried 2G, 3G and wlan...no go
i don't think the conn is the prob...why would it say that my password or username was incorrect?
You are better off using IMAP because POP doesnt support folders nor email states from the server. So if you use POP, all your emails will get downloaded and marked as unread. IMAP supports both.
Astral07 try using these settings
Incoming server: imap.mail.yahoo.com
Port: 143
Security Type: None
SMTP server: smtp.mobile.mail.yahoo.com
Port: 587
Security Type: None
Both these and the previous ones I posted before work for me
i don't know what to tell you...again, i got the same username or password incorrect message
i am 100% sure that those are correct, i also tried my second yahoo account and it said the same thing
Try using the K9 app from the market. It should work no prb from there. What carrier are you using? Maybe they have it blocked or something
hmmm, i'm on Tele2, i'll ask them but i doubt it
i'll try k9 now and report back
i tried ssjowowo's setting for imap and had the same username/password wrong
looks like it doesn't matter which protocol i use, i get us/pass wrong even with k9!
wtf...
i tried both pop3 and imap

I tried setting up imap on my yahoo mail but i get the username/password error. On pop it works fine. Now did you register your imap using wifi or 3g? cos i found this: http://mobiletech.knguyentu.com/2009/11/motorola-droid-setting-up-yahoo-mail.html
Caution: Before Proceeding, ensure that WIFI is turned OFF. This only works via Verizon 3G Signal.

so im assuming that this set up would work via 3g signal only?
i tried 3g, 2g, no wifi, every possible setting and still i get the username/password error
That's so weird. Im on O2 (UK) and both setups work fine. Maybe the problem is down to the carrier not supporting it which is even more weird. It took me ages to set it up the first time on my Hero. Now I just follow these steps. It worked first time on my X10

Connecting Infuse to Microsoft Exchange Server....Help!

Im trying to connect my Infuse to a ms exchange server. The phone is running 2.2 and is not rooted. I have selected setup a new mail account. I have put in the following:
[email protected]password
Then I hit "manual setup" and selected ms exchange server.
Then for "domain\username" i have sunsetcorp\username
Password is entered
for "exchange server" I have mail.sunset.corp
Then I also have use secure connection and accept all ssl certificates checked.
Its says "checking incoming server settings". Then I get "Setup could not finish ... unable to connect to server"
Do I the settings wrong or am I missing something?
Looks like u have it set ok. I have to do [email protected]/password and run it multiple times to get it to sync the first time. Keep trying its not perfect at all. You can also try droidmail if u still can't get it

I would ask your IT dept. for the exact server information to be sure you are inputting the correct server info. Everything else is good to go in your setup so it has to be the server name is not correct causing the failed connection.

Take out the domain setup all together.
I run SBS 2003 and you do not need to set up the domain. I run the following on dozens of phones.......
Domain/Username (must be exact usually with no spaces)
Password (case sensitive)
Exchange Server (mail.yourcompany.com)
uncheck Use secure connection (You can check it later if you wish after you have it working)
Hope this helps! If so please hit the thanks button for me!
For the exchange server try using the IP address of the server. This is the only way I could get mine to work.
This sounds silly, but have you ever connected another phone to this server? That setting isn't always available. Also, I've found the / or \ can make a huge difference. Also, check to make sure you are using the primary email account and not a secondary alias for the username. The email address can be an alias but username has to be the actual NT username. Hope that helps!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
Have been using Exchange for years and work very closely with our Exchange guy's and the username must be Domain\Username if you are on a 2003 box and usually but not always the username on 2007/2010 would be the email address but the Domain\Username should also work according to the experts. If you are using Active Sync which we are I am pretty sure that SSL is a requirement because it connects to Exchange using RPC over HTTP protocol and requires SSL being enabled. Like I said a quick call to your IT people should get it working toot sweet.

I use SBS2003 and do not have the domain name. User name only. (the domain username though) Been working for years that way. mail server is the important one to have the domain address correct in. mail.xxxxxxx.com
If I put the domain name in front of the username it does not connect.....
I suddenly have a problem after loading Zeus. My external SD card is working fine then when I set up the exchanger server and get my mail working it wants to encrypt the SD card (according to company policy)
Now I no longer have access to the SD card, it says cannot mount or format and I if I remove the exchange account I get the SD card back.

Problem setting up my school email on my Razr M

Hey all, I've set up my school email fine on the iPhone 4 and my S3 (had to switch due to signal issues), but I can't seem to get it to work with my Razr M that I've been using. I go to add new account -> other -> manual setup -> imap and I follow these instructions on my school website Set up Your Email Client - UBIT but I can't get past "checking incoming server settings" it just tells me "couldn't open connection to server."
I have my email and password right, for imap server I have in "imap.buffalo.edu" and port 993, security type SSL, authentication method auto.
if you set it up the same way you do on your s3 and iphone and still have problem, it maybe a problem with your Razr M email app,
try using a different email app from play store
