After a month and a half of anticipation for FroYo, I was excited to find out a method of updating that wouldn't result in my warranty being voided. However, considering that I live in the US, the update wasn't available for me through Kies yet. So, with some digging around, I found a fairly straight-forward way of installing it anyway; I read it on several different news sites and I think I found it originating on this forum somewhere.
Then I realized that the method of doing this was for the i9000, and I have the Captivate i897. Still wanting to upgrade to FroYo, I quickly Google'd the method for use on other models. It seemed like it would work from what I read. So, I went through the steps; edited a few registry entries, clicked the 'update' button in Kies, and waited. Then, to my amazement, it worked: I saw my phone boot up with a newer splash screen. One minor problem so far: it said it was the i9000. I wasn't worried at this point, since I figured it wouldn't make a difference (and if I thought it would, there wasn't much I could do at this point anyway). But it did make a difference.
I was greeted with the familiar LauncherPro, as well as all of my apps. But, it was very laggy and was in landscape, even if my phone was in portrait. Playing around with rotations revealed problem one: the accelerometer was calibrated differently between the two models, showing a 90 degree difference. The lag was fixed with a Factory Reset in the Settings.
I then decided to browse around in the update. One, I had no more AT&T bloatware, and two, I got the free Samsung Apps, including Asphalt5. But, there were a few unwanted apps, too. For example, there was now an FM Radio app, even if the Captivate doesn't have one. That would be issue #2.
Anyway, considering that this was FroYo, I decided to see how well Flash actually worked by watching a Flash animation I found. It works fairly well, besides a few frame drops. Then, I decide to go back to the homescreen. Pressing 'Home' went back. Pressing 'Back' went back again. That is problem #3: the home button acts as a second back button, leaving me with a menu button, a search button, and two back buttons.
Between these issues, it is inconvenient to use the phone. Seeing this, I was wondering if I could 1.) Downgrade back to 2.1 Eclair (without rooting or anything) or 2.) Install the Captivate i897 variation of the Kies update once it's released in the US with even more Registry hacks. Thanks in advance!

Look for the odin one click in dev section(takes you to stock jf6). If you want to try froyo, cognition (for the captivate) its by designgears(he also did odin) it has a good faq(read it!) and great roms. I know it seems like a pain but go through the whole tread too.

After about two hours of frustration, ODIN finally gave in and fixed my phone! ^_^ Thanks for your help.

Not sure why you didn't read the dozens of threads in regards to putting a i9000 rom on the captivate. You could have seen quickly that all the issues you have seen are well documented and most suggest hacks or different kernels to fix your issues.

I am trying to find out where you heard this And what you are talking about.
Unless the update comes over the air; or Samsung makes an official announcement that says "update your captivate via Kies" or "update your captivate via odin"; then no method you read about will be official or save your warranty.
Any flashing of your phone - that is not directed by Samsung or AT&T will void your warranty. Unless you put it all back undetected.

Samsung had a press release about a Kies update, but only for certain parts of the world at this point. However, there was some Regedit trick that forced it to download the i9000 firmware regardless of location. The firmware didn't work very well, so I used ODIN One-Click, then flashed Cognition instead.
So, my warranty is now dead.

just flash back to jf6 or jf7 if you have issues. hopefully the official version will be out before you need to use the warranty. believe me as long as it looks legit at a glance the repair centers dont care if it is an odin flash or official update via ota or kies. they just replace parts, reflash and move on to the next one.
I just got a Samsung Captivate and it's the first smart phone I've ever had. It's really a neat little device.
I'm well familiar with jailbreaking, computing, following instructions to perform basic hacks, and yes, even reading, but what I haven't been able to find is an ORDER to do things in.
- Should I root/do things to my phone now, or wait until 2.2? Are there any benefits or drawbacks either way?
- In what ORDER do I have to do things? I'm looking to root, get rid of AT&T bloatware, and start side loading apps.
- What are the essential fixes for the Captivate? Lag fix? GPS fix? I don't know what else there is...
Anyway, I'm really excited to start digging in to this stuff, just looking for some basic advice for a first time smart phone/android owner. Thanks in advance!
Well, you can find a plethora of very useful ROM packages on the Developers forum that will root your device and enable sideloading and most are running 2.2 already. I abandonded stock after 2 weeks of owning the phone, it is my first smartphone as well and I will not touch any OTA's from AT&T because they bricked a lot of phones with their first OTA. The developers have the system dumps as soon as they start to push them and they clean up the bloatware. Before you flash anything get the unlock codes, use an app called SGS unlock from the market and Android ID changer to get your uniquie number and write it down and don't loose it. Once you flash 2.2 leak your ID will not be the correct one. Also once you root, get ROM Manager (donate version) and Titanium Backup (donate version) you will not be able to live without them. Also the 2.2 leak fixed my GPS, it really works now. Also, very important before you flash anything make sure you have a phone that enters download mode and recovery mode using the three button combo or you will brick your phone, there is a batch of phones that can not enter download mode no matter what you do. Take out your battery and look below your IMEI number for the batch hopefully it isn't 1008 these phones do not go into download mode. If you have one of these go to AT&T and exchange it for a phone that is from a different batch and make sure you have the button combos working before starting to mod your phone.
Lastly welcome aboard and enjoy your phone
Thanks for the reply.
Luckily, it appears my phone is from batch 1010 (you had me scared there for a second!)
What are the odds that the leaked 2.2 is any different from the actual one when it comes out?
Edit pretty much already said
Leaked froyo will be slightly different it will more of the stuff native to android and the att one will have more of there stuff. The developers seem to find and fix the bugs fast.
Is there any possibility to updated to 2.2 even if the phone was produced in 1008 batch? Unfortunately, mine says 1008. I have rooted my phone and am able to sideload apps.
Please help
Thanks
There is a jig somewhere in the forum that is how to make a jig that forces download mode. I would make it or if you are not comfortable with that someone is selling it. Try it to make it sure it works. It really is only needed if there is problem. Which happens to all of us sometime. It will get you out of pretty much any jam. That is why its recommend.
ill give you 2 rules of thumb
1 if its fun do it
2 if it aint broken dotn fix it
your choice , I only obey rule #1 , and I take risk because its fun , android is fun ...
if all you need are fixes , welll your the one who should say where to start .. is your phone sluggish ? do you feel lag ? does your gps lock in timely manner ? thats how it goes ... like I said me I mod just to mod ( many of us do ) ..
The main things I'm looking to do are:
- Remove AT&T bloatware
- Sideload custom apps
- Make it look awesome
- Install helpful stuff for battery life / gps / lag / etc.
That said...
I have successfully rooted my phone, and I'm now figuring out my next steps.
Hey all. I just bought a used (but in great condition) captivate off of ebay. Unfortunately it is of the #1008 batch.
I did test the 3 button and 2 button + usb modes and they both work.
Does this mean I will be fine putting a new rom on, or will this #1008 problem present itself somewhere down the road?
Last time I put an alternate ROM on a phone was way back on a Tmobile SDA, and hopefully it will be soon when I do my next one
Thanks

Why do you need ROM Manager AND Titanium Backup? Do they do the same thing? installed ROM Manager, created a backup, thought that's all I needed...

Rom Manager or a nandroid backup is a complete system image. It's useful to get back a full rom state if you have any troubles. Saves some time from having to rebuild from scratch.
Titanium Backup is used to save and easily restore third party apps. If you are flashing a new rom, you never want to restore system data as this has a tendency to cause fc's.
Hope that clears it up.
Thanks Cappy!

1. You can do that if you already rooted.
2. You can do that easy, even with out having to root. I use 'Android Central
Sideload Wonder Machine' (its a program you download and use on your pc)
3. Use Beautiful Widgets or Fancy Widget. Might need to be rooted to customize some UI.
4. For battery life I use Battery Indicator Pro. I like 'GPS Status' to test GPS.
I myself is not rooted or not running any custom roms. Not worth the risk to me and I can wait for the official update. My phone works and looks great. GPS is good enough when outdoors.

Bitter much?
FYI This will also help others who have the same questions. Be nice.
To answer your questions, the most popular rom currently in use would be cognition (located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786532). This handles all the needs you are looking for and more.
To make things pretty I would recommend using launcherpro and Beautiful Widgets. The best music player is poweramp.
good question

Well, I think I'm deep poo.
I'll save the introduction, being a new member, for later, and focus on an urgent problem that needs help.
Basically, being stuck on 2.1, I tried to find the easier way to upgrade my Captivate to 2.2. My Kies didn't work (even though I tried many solutions), so I had to find new ways to update my phone to Froyo. Take note that my Captivate is locked on Rogers (meaning I have a SIM card inside already). Also, my phone isn't rooted.
I stumbled upon this; "considering I can't post links, I'll give the directions for you, so you find the page I'm talking about; it's on techpetals.net and the article name is "How to Install Froyo on Captivate – Android 2.2 Froyo for Samsung Captivate Leaked"
I completed all the steps and this is where the problem shows its ugly face.
The HUGE problem comes from the fact that my phone is now like a stock, locked AT&T phone. What I mean by that is that the boot screen shows the AT&T logo. Everything is stock, such as in the early AT&T Captivate YouTube review. All my contacts are probably lost (I hope there's a way to retrieve them back). I can blame myself, as much as I can blame the author of the article who didn't mention that the solution only applied to US phones (likely). At least the menu shows that the firmware's 2.2.
I'm in limbo and I don't know what to do. There are so many things to fix here. I don't know what to do and I urgently need your help. What should I do, people?
Any kind of help would be appreciated.
What seems to be the problem? Do you want to go back to stock or do you just want to remove the ATT boot screen?

Thanks for the reply. A little update on my situation: I've followed the steps mentioned on the mmacleod.ca - updating the rogers samsung galaxy s to android froyo 2 2 froyo article, which helped me set my APN. 2.2. is working great, but my issue now is the fact that I lost my contacts (which were stored on the internal memory) and the AT&T boot screen.
Are these solvable issues?
Hi all,
I'm looking for a Samsung Captivate, and i saw one online for $100, but the phone won't start. From what the seller said, it was rooted, and it'll boot up, but the phone then states something to the effect that "the launcher is not responding". My question is this: I don't have experience with Android phones, but does this sound like something that can be fixed using software methods?
I'm experienced with iPhone jailbreaking and WP7 hacking, so I'm not afraid of the challenge, i just want to know if there's a good chance of reviving the phone (assuming there's no physical/water damage)
Thanks in advance!
Launcher issues are easy to fix, fixed even easier with a factory reset which I assume you will do if the seller hasn't. If it's been factory reset and it's giving those issues....well I can only see that happening if there is a custom ROM loaded.
Either way, if you believe it boots, I would buy it. The launcher is basically your home screen, and if the phone can load that far, that's all software level stuff, easy to fix. I own a captivate and I always liked the phone, but rooted and ROM'd it is SO much better. Hope this helped
Hey, thanks so much for the reply! I'll see about piking it up today and let you know what happens

No problem man, if you need help when you get back with it let me know. I'll be glad to help with whatever
So i got the phone today. The phone was pretty laggy, so i used the Odin3 one click sw to bring it back to stock. It worked, but the phone is still laggy. Wouldn't you think that flashing it back to stock would fix any issues with it? I tried it twice.
Also, when i try to open the applications section, it tells me that "TWLauncher is not responding", even after flashing it. I was thinking about just flashing it to CM7, but i have to get the .zip file onto an sd card so i can flash it from recovery. Do you think this might help? Thanks in advance!
Honestly man, my captivate was just like that (laggy), TWLauncher is the UI launcher, TouchWiz. There are thing's about it liked but mostly I hated it. I would root and ROM the phone with something stable (I run CM7, there is finally an RC for captivate). Also, Odin puts the phone back to 2.1, and there was all kinds of GPS bugs and stuff with it, they have 2.2 stock for it now, which runs a bit better but I still don't like.
Also, try removing the SD Card from the phone, in case it's a ****ty one and causing lag while loading in the beginning. That may not help at all, I'm no expert, but I am a huge nerd and it makes sense to me. Just realize the stock firmware on the phone ruins the experience a bit.
Edit: I didn't notice the CM7 part, just make sure the zip is in your main directory, don't put it on either of the SD cards (internal or external).
So the .zip actually goes onto the phone memory itself? That makes sense. I'm having issues getting my phone to mount and the computer to recognize it. My computer doesn't see it as an external drive. I'd try to go to the settings and change it to mass storage, but the stupid TWLauncher isn't working!
Can you load the android market? Try to get ADWLauncher, the free one. Get that installed, and when you push the home button it should ask you which launcher to use. Choose ADWLauncher, possibly reboot, and try again. Again, I hate TWLauncher, it was the first thing I replaced on my phone.
edit: lol, don't forget to hit "use as default" before you select ADWLauncher.
edit again: Dammit, I'm terrible at this...if you can't get android market open, make sure your phone stays on, go to the android market website, and install it from there. That should work for sure
Ok, so I used Odin3 one click version 2.2 (which has froyo and the JI6 build number. Everything works fine, but I'm not able to get out of airplane mode and get cell signal. the phone says the baseband version is unknown. If i use the Odin3 One click 2.1 (build JF6, the phone is in the same unresponsive state it was when i first got it. It doesn't even take me to the setup when you first launch the phone.
It's really weird. I wonder if there's was a way to flash it back to stock without one click. I'm wondering if the ROM in there is corrupt or something. The reason why i want to get back to Android2.1 is because all the CM7 tutorials say to start from there. So yeah. Any other suggestions?
Oh, i got rid of TWLauncher, and yeah. I hate that thing!
Well...the Odin I used took my phone back to base stock 2.1, after I was already on 2.2, you 2.2 has this sig verification crap and you can't flash anything. So I'm not sure which Odin I have, but it took it to 2.1, I imagine yours should too... This problem may need someone smarter... So make sure the Odin you are using is meant to take you to 2.1, make sure it specifically says it's for captivate. If both of those are verified, odin isn't working for some reason. Did you follow the Odin guide for captivate to make sure you didn't miss anything?
Well, i found a random thread on the CM7 forums that said to try using Odin regular, and flashing the original firmware. So i did that and it worked! The phone was usable again! Only thing was that i didn't have any cell service. So i flashed the CM7 ROM and the baseband was fixed. All is well, and i'm loving my device. Thanks so much for your help!
Woot! Man I'm super glad you got all that working, I had to return a Captivate due to no service...so I'm glad CM7 fixed that for you. Super awesome that it's working, glad I could help bro. Enjoy!
Ok so I am back to using the infuse after royally bricking my Vivid This is my second infuse. I didnt like my last one because no matter what i did it would always load portrait pictures sideways in mms, facebook or any other share app. The only way around it was that I used go sms and i could rotate before sending but what a stupid hassle. Well this infuse I just got is on froyo and already rooted, and I dont seem to have the picture issue at all! So my best guess is that issue is related to gb. Just wondering if anyone has a confirmation of this. Ive done some searching but no definitive answer yet. If it is a gb thing then i will happily stay on froyo. After bricking my vivid and costing myself a few $hundred Im not in the mood to play geek now with my phone anyway. LOL
Wow...tell us how you really feel....kidding
I never had this issue with gb...the latest gb is very stable, i used Aeon custom ROM as my dd, daily driver for a ROM.
I know don't want to play geek , so the best bet is staying with a stocky gingerbread Rom...imho, if you find your self wondering, click my signature pic for the super infuse page for all the listings. There's lots of smart and great peps around here that can answer your questions. Or you can pm me...
Trolling via Tapatalk 2, on my GNote...
I'm having the same issue with my Infuse after updating to GB. With Froyo, my pictures were always right-side-up when copied to my PC, or shared via Flickr/Facebook/etc., whether I took them in landscape or portrait. Since updating to GB last week, pictures taken in portrait come out sideways - 90 degrees counter-clockwise, which is 180 degrees from "normal" landscape pictures - when I copy to my PC, and whenever I try to share via Flickr or Facebook. They DO, however, properly rotate when I share them via Instagram and MMS, and they display right-side-up in Gallery on my phone.
I've done a bunch of searching over the weekend, and don't see any solution here or anywhere else, other than stupid people saying "don't take pictures in portrait." This problem started when I got the stock GB update from AT&T through Kies, and it's still the same after trying a few different ROMs, including Saurom and Aeon (which I'm LOVING, and would have to have to get rid of). Gonna try going back to Froyo and I'll update with results soon.
EDIT: Went back to a Froyo ROM, Refuse 1.7, still had the same picture orientation issue. I let Kies update to GB again with the same results BUT I did think to try a different camera program (Camera 360) and using that seems to fix this issue. So after a week of poking around at this, I'd say the issue is with the GB stock camera app. Now if only Google would fix their My Apps list to show more than 20 pages, as I reinstall everything. Again.
It depends how you take the picture...I think if you take it portrait it goes normal but if you take it landscape then it goes side ways...could be the other way around...but I remember having that issue whenever I'd try to upload a pic to facebook...
Anyways...infuse is better then the vivid...at least when it comes to development
Edit...also may I ask what you did to hard brick your vivid?
