[Q] Anyone using the Omnia 7 in the US on AT&T

Is anyone using the Samsung Omnia 7 on AT&T? I know it has support for AT&T's 1900 band for 3G but wanted to know how the experience is. I'm in Germany this week and was hoping to see if I can pick one up [not really happy with any of the AT&T phones].
Also, with updates possibly being controlled by carriers what's the workaround for buying an unlocked device from overseas and using it in the US on AT&T?

can't tell you about omnia on at&t, but as far as i'm aware if your phone is unlocked from carrier, i don't see any reason/possibility for them to delay an update being rolled to your phone.

it will work perfectly.. except for the lack of 3G. The omnia lacks the all important 850 band at&t uses... and the 1700 band tmobile uses.

An explanation for "The omnia lacks the all important 850 band at&t uses" would be useful as AT&T also supports 3G on the 1900 band that the Omnia 7 supports. So seems like it should work...

Dependa on the tower. Lacking tje 850 band is a big deal on att.

One advantage with the Focus is it has an SD card slot to extend storage.
If you use you phone for music,movies and games it's a big +.

lacking 850 is not a problem since only mayor citied like new york, san fran, dallas etc. have 850 and the majority of normal city only have 1900. so 1900 is fine given you don't have access to hsdpa and hsupa, only regular 3g. now if only i can find an unlock omnia 7 under $650.

There are maps available showing coverage for each AT&T 3G frequency band. I wouldn't dismiss one band over the other. It all depends on what city you live in.
Check into the coverage areas before you waste money on a phone that won't give you 3G coverage in your area.

Very interesting as I googled AT&T 850 vs. 1900 MHz Coverage and pulled up a very interesting map [can't post a link due to my post count].
Coverage of the two bands is almost identical. I didn't know that speed is something to give up on the 1900 band though.

I'll be asking at an AT&T store, perhaps they can shed some light...

i personally am not sure if all phones handle the varying bands straight from the OEMs. HTC lists what bands their phone supports to each region, but in saying that it would be good to know what would happen if you got a omnia to the US (or in my case if i somehow managed to get an unlocked focus to australia ).

I don't think the phone supports at&t's 850mhz band.

From what i've heard, ATT doesn't even really use the 850 spectrum much anymore...

Several people are selling this new on eBay for ~$600, but it does not support 3G. As per the one auction details:
* Works with AT&T and T-mobile EDGE but does not work with 3G networks in the USA
* Works with AT&T 1900Mhz 3G but not AT&T 850mhz 3G - Does not work with T-mobile 3G in the USA
I love the design of this phone too but is it worth paying all that money for a phone where you won't be able to take advantage of all its features? Edge is slow as Sh*t compared to 3g in my area. Just consider that if you really want this phone in the US.

I have tested tegra 2 chipset and its nothing to brag about. It has the 2nd slowest gpu on the market out of all the 1 ghz phones. It only beats 1st gen snapdragons gpu. The quadrant benchmarks posted on the internet are not correct. Quadrant does not even support the cpu in its test. Samsung orion chipset is going to be the king of duel cores in 2011. Over 500 million triangles per sec. Tegra 2 claims 90 million triangles per sec but does it does not even perform at that level(maybe driver related).

Yup... not worth getting - its a snazzy Samsung I'm sure with all the same ol' issues as our phone currently.
Only benefit is running Gingerbread out of the box and a flash on the camera. Plus the modem is only for T-Mobile which means Edge for us AT&T folks.

any chance of a nexus s at&t like nexus one at&t? my personal experience, i will only get android phone of nexus series or with cyanogen support. otherwise, i'm going to have to wait forever for update.

Since Google has the full hardware specs on their site, I wonder if the Captivate will ever get Gingerbread? The Nexus S has very very similiar hardware specs.

I don't think the captivate will ever get gingerbread: we don't even have froyo.

the vibrant has the ATT 3g bands built in, has anyone seen specs that say this didn't happen on the Nexus S also??

Wait afew months and i'm pretty sure there will be a Nexus S for ATT like the Nexus One for ATT

Why will the phone only work with AT&T Edge, and not AT&T 3G?

So.....just to be clear this would not work with ATT 3G? Does that mean the Nexus one is only on EDGE for ATT as well?

According to the specs listed here --> http://www.google.com/nexus/#!/tech-specs - it will work with AT&T 3G...unless I am mis-informed regarding the band frequencies.
Anyone with a educated answer able to confirm this?

Yup.. I stand corrected - this should be a fully "open" device. So you can pay the 600 bones or jump to T-Mobile for $299.00.
Either way it should be the same phone (not ala Nexus 1 which had two flavors for the different networks).
From the commercials - it does appear to be Samsung hardware with JUST Google goodness inside. If thats the case - should be a wicked fast device that works!

HSPA+ 21 only works with T-mobile, AT&T doesn't use an AWS band, in this case is 1700/2100Mhz.
Someone may have been able to 'trick' the vibrant into using a basic UMTS band on AT&T, but I never heard of it, let alone heard that the Vibrant supported AT&T 3G. The Vibrant has GSM.support for them (2G), I haven't seen anything else.
Where's the supporting documents that people have been getting At&t 3G with a T-Mobile Vibrant?

Trust me.... I'm using a vibrant on at&t with 3g. It does support the wcdma 1900 band. There is alot of evidence of this...heck engadget made a post about this... google it!
Edit: What I was trying to ask is if the galaxy s 4g supports the 1900 wcdma that the original vibrant supported....

That would work....hopefully the galaxy s 4g can be unlocked the same way the previous galaxy s phones could.

In my research I have found that 4G is not backwards compatable with 3G. Someware I read that companys are putting 3G and 4G chips on the new 4G phones to bridge the gap between the 3G chip ability to handle voice and the 4G chip being able to handle data. I can't say for sure if SGS4G has both chips. It's a know issue that the 3G SGS misses calls when connected to a laptop because It does not handle data well in combination with voice. That's why I upgraded to the 4G. I don't think Its going to make a lot of difference until TM gets their HW in place with a backbone that can support it.

Samsung Galaxy S 4G 1900 MHz WCDMA
I bought my Samsung Galaxy S 4G at a T-Mobile store in San Francisco. I subsequently upgraded it to the latest firmware provided by T-Mobile using Samsung Kies.
I usually use WCDMA only mode because GSM causes awful buzzing sound when I use it in my car (I have a FM transmitter connected to my phone).
Anyways, I was curious to see if I'd see AT&T, so I searched for network (still under WCDMA Only mode), and it found both AT&T and T-Mobile.
I pressed *#197328640# in the dialer, and then went to the debug screen/band selection to look at available bands, and it actually does have 1900 WCDMA.
It shows
GSM 850, 900, 1800, 1900, WCDMA 2100 (FDD I), WCDMA 1700 (FDD IV), WCDMA 1900(FDD II).
I don't know if AT&T SIM would work since my phone is locked but I can report back once I get it unlocked.

EDIT: Reading an old post of mine, I realized that my memory played a bad trick on me. My tests DID work on 1900 WCDMA and DID NOT work on 850 WCDMA, just opposite to what I wrote earlier in this post. --sorry

I don't think it would work. For reference, here is a side by side band comparison between my Vibrant (tested 3G on AT&T) and my coworker's SGS 4G (locked, untested).
The essential band here is the 850 1900 WCDMA, but the "overflow" 850 WCDMA is missing and I couldn't make it work anyways (I'm in Houston, maybe it is not switched on here).

My understanding is that AT&T usually uses 1900MHz for 3G, and in certain cities where they don't have enough bandwidth in 1900 MHz like NYC and SF, they use 850MHz.. so you could still get by with only 1900 MHz, no?

Yep, thats what I have heard as well. Now one thing of note. When I tested my Vibe, it only worked on the 850 1900 WCDMA band. Could not make it work on the 850 no matter how hard I tried. I'm in Houston for that matter and maybe this 850 WCDMA is not enabled here.

I'm currently unlocked on AT&T and i'm on 3G. I ALWAYS have an issue with upload speeds, but otherwise download speeds are just fine.
I attached four photos, of the available bands with my CURRENT galaxy S 4G unlocked on AT&T.
Also, a speed test I ran. That download speed is WAY higher than average because it was taken when the network was under the lightest usage possible, late at night.

I went into phone debug page, and one of the screens says HSDPA[0], HSUPA[0]. It also says network status: HSDPA (sorry I don't have the exact info on me right now).
Am I really just on HSDPA, not HSPA+? Is there a definite way to find out what my phone is using? Thank you.

Technically I'm on HSPA+, though this phone doesn't even cover all of the "necessary" bands.
Look, to edit what bands you're on go into the market and download SGS Tools.
Then, go into the first line (Secret Codes) and hit Band Selection.
I'm on AT&T so I'm not sure what bands you need, but you can manually select them in there.
To check the band you're on, go to GSM Status in the "Secret Codes" page again.

Oh I know I'm on 1700/2100 MHz because that's the only frequency (AWS) that T-Mobile uses for WCDMA/UMTS/4G/3G.
I downloaded Phono, and it says Network Type is HSDPA. Shouldn't it say HSPA+? I'm just wondering if there's an easy way to tell if I'm really on 4G (aka HSPA+) as opposed to 3G.
I actually messed around with debug settings last night so I'm worried that I screwed it up....

Which debug settings did you change?
And as for Phono (which I've never even heard of/used until now), my phone says HSDPA as well, which, quite frankly, makes no sense. I guess you can technically get speeds of around 5MBPS on HSDPA but it's not typical.
You should easily be able to tell whether you're on HSDPA or HSPA+ with the 4G/3G connectivity icon. in your status bar.
Now, I'm no expert, but hopefully that answers your question.

I played around with GCF settings. When I go into debug mode, there was something about choosing Rel.6 or Rel.5 or cancel settings.. And then also, if you do *#3214789#, you can enable/disable GCF Mode.. which I have no idea what it is about....

Hmm...that's awfully strange.....
I can't find anything about it anywhere....
Try restoring using ODIN yet?
I mean, if the phone is that messed up since you messed with that setting.

I put my friends att sim in my unlocked sgs4g to test and the 3g sign came up by the bars as well as the att operator logo didn't really test out speeds but im guessing that the 3g sign wouldn't have came up unless it was really picking up that frequency.

I am a little lost on this. I was looking on the Infuse and thought about getting it and unlocking it to use with tmobile and was wondering if i would get 4g speeds on it. Here is the bands i pulled off on AT&T's website for the phone:
GSM/EDGE:GSM/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 3G - UMTS/HSDPAHSPA 850/1900/2100 4G*HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul
According to this, it should work. Am i mistaken?

Um, why would you think it would work? Do you see UMTS1700 in there? I don't.

I thought it used 2100? I don't know much about the bands. Just started reading on who supported what.

tmobile uses mainly the 1700 band for 3g/4g. they also own the 700 band but i dont believe they use it. att is mostly on the 850 and 1900 bands. european and asian bands are typically 900 and 2100 so they dont really use those bands to keep unlocked phones off the network. the infuse does not work for 3g and 4g on tmobiles network, sorry.

ahh ok. that makes sense now. I've mainly stuck with tmobile phones, except tried an iphone a couple of times. but att has some cooler phones that i thougth i might want to try, but guess that won't happen now . I use the net on my phone alot, so it would be an issue.

Actually AT&T's weird bands have nothing to do with keeping unlocked phones off their network, just the fact that 2100 MHz wasn't available in the US for any carrier.
UMTS2100 is for international roaming, as it's the standard UMTS band in almost every other country.

T-Mobile uses 1700 and 2100, and you NEED both for 3G/4G to work.

i though the att bands were the same as rogers, bell, and telus use in canada? and the same as used in some other countries in the americas and in places like new zealand. i wouldnt exactly say att has the weird bands in this case.
maybe in a year or two att will merge networks with t-mo and you will have a huge selection of compatable phones.

the bell vibrant is an i9000 and the telus fascinate is a t-mo vibrant, the modems all work on the captivate. trust me they are all gsm networks and fully compatable with att phones.

Any Att Phone or Unlock Phone with tmobile 3g?

Ok i have a tmobile s2 and a att unlock lg thrill, i plan to tether with my s2 but tmobile makes you pay a fee each month so i cant do that, recently i put my tmobile sim card in the att lg thrill and i decided to try and tether from the thrill and it was able to work but only with edge speed. So im just wondering if there's any phone out there that can get tmobile 3g but it's not tmobile branded, basically is there any cheap pentaband phones out there?
i would love to get a pentaband phone to tether... i like getting more phones but i would consider to try and root my s2 if i have too, i suck at rooting phones xD

It doesn't matter which phone you use. T-mobile can see how much data you're using and recommend (or force) you to have the tethering plan.

that only happens on my tmobile s2, tmobile directs you to a page to get the tethering plan. When i tether with the thrill, tmobile doesnt direct me to tethering page so basically i can tether with the thrill.

If you use ATT phone on T-Mobile 3G network, you will likely be getting EDGE speed only as most ATT phones only work with dual-band UMTS 850/1900. T-Mobile 3G/4G network operates on UMTS 1700/2100, as I vaguely recalled.
For ATT, UMTS 850 is the dominant band for 3G/4G network. UMTS 1900 only works with a very limited coverage. That is the main reason that most overseas phones failed to obtain 3G+ data speed on ATT network as most of them are dual-UMTS 900/2100 or tri-UMTS 900/1800/2100.
I have never been a customer on T-Mobile, but it has been alleged that UMTS1700 is the dominant band on T-mobile 3G/4G network. If that is indeed true, then it is close to impossible to get any 3rd-party unlocked phones to work with T-mobile 3G/4G network. While UMTS2100 is very common on overseas phones, UMTS1700 is close to non-existance other than the phones subsidized by T-Mobile.
UMTS850 is hard to get by, but not as hard as UMTS1700.
This is the trick for mobile carriers to lock in their customers.

GSM version of the Galaxy Nexus should work. It has 850, 900, 1700, 1900 and 2100 bands.

Then the GSM version of the Nexus S...900, 1700, 2100, but then again T-Mo has a version of Nexus S already I believe.
