I was helping someone get started with Google Voice in a thread, and thought a little tutorial might help people out, so I wrote one. I'd like input if you guys think I got something wrong, or left something out. I hope this can help someone.

What Is Google Voice?
First off, I think it helps to think of Google Voice like a switch box of some sort. You can feed telephone calls in and feed them back out, in whatever direction you’d like. The original intended functionality of GV was to allow you give people one number (your GV number) and then it would ring all of your phones when someone calls that number.
Now this might be helpful for some people, but I know the majority of people here probably don’t have more than one phone. But this setup can still be useful for people who want to use their Google Voice number as the number they give out to people. This setup is really the easiest, because once you’ve entered your cell phone in Google Voice under Settings > Phones, you’re pretty much done. The other advantage to this route is that you can have GV ask callers for their name before it rings your phone (call screening), and some other cool features. If you still want to use your Sprint phone number and just use GV for voicemail, see the next section.
Note: Now when you now first set up Google Voice, it asks if you want to set it up as strictly voicemail and then steps you through steps similar to the following section. It then gives you a more limited feature set for just the options that apply to when you’re using it as voicemail. If that’s all you want to do, then that might be the route to go. If at some point, you want to use a scenario similar to the one above Go to Settings >’Phones’ tab > Get a Google number (thanks to Jon at Hebb Networks for clarifying this)
Google Voice as Voicemail
(This is basically an explanation of what Google walks you through when you go to Settings > “Activate Google voicemail for this phone” on the GV website)
Note that sometime around November 2009, Sprint decided to make CONDITIONAL call forwarding free, so we’re going to configure it like this:
In this situation what you’ll do is dial *285555555555 (replace the 5’s with your GV number) and then press talk. You should hear some beeps to let you know everything is working alright. Then you can hang up. (To undo this feature dial *38)
Next, you want to let GV know that these calls that are being forwarded should go to voicemail. You can do this by going into your settings page in Google Voice on your computer, and clicking “Activate Google voicemail for this phone”
Another thing to note, is that there is a big difference between CONDITIONAL and UNCONDITIONAL call forwarding. CONDITIONAL forwards a call after some (you guessed it) conditions are met - i.e. Busy, or no answer. You can read more about CONDITIONAL call forwarding here: http://bit.ly/9KvT2L
On the other hand, UNCONDITIONAL call forwarding takes all calls to your sprint number, and forwards them ALL to a different number without ever ringing your cell phone. This is not typically an option that anyone would want to use, and Sprint still charges 20 cents/minute for every call that uses this. Read more here: http://bit.ly/apyfAs
Accessing Google Voice from your Hero
Now on your CDMA Hero, you’re definitely going to want to download the Google Voice app from the Market. This will currently do two functions.
1. Allow you to see and play all of your voicemail.
2. Route your outgoing calls back through Google Voice, if you want to. (This makes more sense, I think, if you’re giving out your Google Voice number to people, because then your calls will be all forwarded through GV, both incoming and outgoing. I don’t give out my GV number, so I have mine set to only make outgoing calls through GV for international calls.)
Another option is to call Google Voice from your cell phone, just like the old days with Sprint Voicemail. Be sure to go Settings > Call Settings > Voicemail and then type in your GV number. Then when you hold 1 from the dial pad, you’ll call GV and be able to access it that way too.
Yet another option is to just visit the Google Voice Mobile Page in the browser.
Notification Options
With a fresh setup of Google Voice Voicemail, you’ll probably quickly notice that you’ll bombarded with email and SMS notifications about a new message. You can turn these off, and if you’re using the Android app, you’ll probably want to. On the Google Voice site, visit Settings > Voicemail & SMS > Voicemail Notifications to turn these on or off.
I have one question about using GV. I have free mobile to mobile calling. When someone calls my GV number, which is then forwarded to my cell phone, is this still a mobile to mobile call, or will I be charged?

I just did a reverse telephone lookup, and it lists my google voice number type as a landline. So, no, I don't believe it counts as a mobile number.
Edit: Just checked my Sprint bill. I've got Any Mobile, Anytime. It is charged as a land line.
(On a side note, we just switched to the free mobile to mobile a few months ago, damn I love it: "Your account used 9,346 minutes of Any Mobile, Anytime(sm) calling last month.")
According to GV surport forum. If somebody(cellphone) calls ur GV number and transfer to ur sprint number. It should be counted as Mobile to Mobile. However, if you called somebody else through ur GV number, it will be conted as you call a landline.

Yupp, thats how it is, I have the bills to prove it. Also, for the person calling you it counts as a landline call for them, so if they are on Sprint it is not using mobile2mobile.
If there was a way to convince google to have gvoice lines as mobile lines it would be set....to bad...
Interestingly, the Voice app for Android doesn't do push notifications of new VMs. I get my email notifications long before the Voice app picks the VMs up. (I think it's set to check every 5 minutes?)
Any ideas on that one?

I go to settings > refresh and notification > refresh inbox,, and there are options there for refresh rate. 5 minutes is the lowest setting. I heard somewhere that there is a 3rd party app that checks more frequently, but I haven't tried it. I wouldn't want to drain my battery with an interval shorter than 5 minutes. Maybe you'd be better off making a gmail label to sort the notifications if the delay is a problem.
I've just been setting GV to send me SMS notifications, and then when I have a VM, I just hit refresh, and look at it. I don't want it constantly refreshing because I hardly get VM's.

That's the one thing that keeps me from becoming a heavy Google Voice user. I read on the Google support forums that they're working on push notifications but they said it was difficult and didn't have an ETA.
I don't know how it would be more difficult than Gmail.

Just wanted to add a little something (feel free to put it in your guide if you want, to avoid questions in the forum later) for people who are on Cricket Wireless...
If you try to set this up for Cricket, the code you dial to activate Google Voicemail is slightly different.
For Cricket, dial *74xxxxxxx.
If you get an error after dialing it, something like "Cricket does not currently offer this service", then the problem isn't that Cricket doesn't offer it, but that your account does not have Call Forwarding enabled.
So, if you use Cricket and you get an error after dialing the code, go to your My Account on the Cricket Website and double check/add the Call Forwarding feature to your account. Once you do this, the code will work and GVoicemail can be activated.

Excellent, and thanks; I'm glad this is being helpful to some people. I will definitely add that to at least the PDF guide today after I finish some school work. I look at this guide as a work in progress, and I'd like to eventually make it a fairly comprehensive users-guide to GV.
My one comment is:
*28 on Sprint forwards BOTH busy line, and no answer. From reading the cricket site, it seems that you'd both need to do *73 and *74 codes, so that when you're busy, it also sends calls to GV. On sprint you can do this too, as it would be the same as doing *28. Actually when I first activated mine, I had to do it that way because the exchange I was using was having some problems with the *28. Basically *28 is just a shortcut (on sprint, not cricket) for forwarding both.
So I'll add this explanation to the guide too. (along with undo codes) I totally forgot I had that problem. But I'm pretty sure you want to also do *73.

To the people with billing comments:
So basicially everyone is saying:
1) All GV calls out are charged as calls to a land line. (which I have experienced too)
2) All GV incoming calls are charged as if you were receiving the call directly. (i.e. [Mobile call -> GV -> your phone] is charged as mobile... OR ... [landline call -> GV -> your phone] is charged as landline]
Am I right here? If so, I'll add this in today, too.

* I have the application from the market installed
* I am receiving notifications in the form of text, and through the notification bar in android.
What I cannot figure out is how to opened the darn program when i want to get back into google voice to look at the messages in the inbox. i can get in when a message icon is in the tray (i just click on it and google voice comes up), but later on when i think "what was that message again?" and I go to go back to the program I cannot find a way to get in.
* There is no program in the "all programs" page (accessed by the arrow)
* There is no widget (other than the one to change how i want google voice to make calls for me)
What am I missing? I cannot figure out how to get into the program.
I could go to the mobile site, but that just seems silly when i know that the program is on my phone. I just can't find an icon to access it.
Please tell me I'm blind, and missing something obvious.

I can only guess that you're looking for an icon that says "Google Voice" when actually the icon just says "Voice"

Sprint has a feature called "Sprint to Home" for $5 /month. If you add that to your plan ALL calls going to and from google voice are free. I use my phone ALL the time and only manage to rack up a 20-30 minutes a month .

No problem. I knew that was probably your problem, because I had to do a double-take the first time I installed it too. Voice sounds really generic and has a pretty generic looking icon, so its not hard to overlook. I should add a picture of the icon to my guide

I've heard about that. So you use google voice to dial to everybody? Cause I have 300 mins/month(Family plan,1500mins, 5ppl), if next month I use more than 300 mins, I'll call sprint to add this service.

Yes, you can use it as primary voicemail, while still using your Sprint number. That's how I primarily use mine, since I'm on a 1500 minute 5 line family plan with free mobile to mobile any network, and we barely use 200 anytime minutes COMBINED. So it doesn't make sense for me to use GV for calls, when everyone already has my Sprint number. just follow the section in the guide "google voice as voicemail" or the setup instructions on GV.
What is nice about GV for voicemail is that you get visual voicemail via the GV android app, access to voicemail on your pc, its easy to archive messages, custom greetings for different groups of callers, and a bunch of other stuff. Voicemail transcription isn't great yet, but makes it nice to get an idea of what callers are saying if you can't listen (class, meeting, etc)
Invites are pretty sparse. I only ever got three, which I've used for my close friends, or i'd hand them out.

A lot of the family plans now have the free mobile to mobile any network, so if you mainly make mobile calls, you might take a look at that as an option too. (sorry if I keep bringing this up, but it did really do a killing on my plan; my sister used almost 9000 free minutes last month because of this)
I just got T-Mobile's $30 pre-paid plan with 100 Min Talk + Unlimited texts & Web (5G @ 4G). Perfect plan for me on my HTC Sensation.
I use Google Voice... and that is my primary number. I don't give my T-Mobile number out to anyone, only the Google Voice number.
With T-Mobile Prepaid, you can't change the voicemail forwarding number... so if I decline a call, it goes into T-Mobile's voicemail instead of my GV mail. If I let the phone ring, and don't decline the call, it goes to GV after 4 rings.
I've been looking for a solution where GV will work under all circumstances, and think I understand one, but want to be sure before I do it...
If I call T-Mobile to disable their voicemail, I should be able to use only my Google Voice mail. Is that right? Will it go to GV if I decline a call?
Any confirmation, or additional advice would be greatly appreciated!

I had T-mobile prepay on a G1 last year. When i found Google Voice, I had wanted to do what you are looking to do. I called T-Mobile and asked them they told me even if i disabled my voice mail the phone would just ring and ring. Never giving the option for Google Voice voice mail to kick in.
Currently I have a regular Sprint account and want to keep both numbers but use the Google Voice voice mail. I had set it up but it told me one of the numbers would have to be deleted if i continued. Basically i want to give random people and bill collectors google voice. Then save my real number for people closer to me.

I'm not sure that's right though. If I decline the call... it might still continue to ring a couple more times on their end, but GV kicks in after 20 seconds... doesn't it?

I found this out the hard way too. It was very disappointing. I read in a couple forums that people called T-Mobile support and asked for their tier 2 support who could manually override the forwarding numbers. Unfortunately, when I tried it, the support agent said that forwarding wasn't possible under the prepaid plans. I still wonder how it was possible that others reported having success. Will there ever be a fix for us T-Mobile prepaid / Google Voice users?

If I disable T-Mobile voicemail on the phone. Wouldn't Google Voice pick up the call after a certain number of seconds?
Rather than just keep ringing, GV would answer it and play the VM message... wouldn't it?

Ok, I called CS and had them de-activate my voicemail on my prepaid voice service.
If you call my tmobile # directly, and the device is on, it rings for 30 seconds, then goes into tmobile voicemail system asking for a #. If the device is off, it goes directly into the tmobile voicemail system asking for a #.
If you call my google voice, it rings for 30 seconds whether the device is on or not, then goes into google voicemail.
This works for what I need, and I hope it answers a question or two for others.
Also, the tech support guy said it can take a couple hours to go through, but it worked for me within a minute. The text msg I received however, said something about changing my service to monthy 4G, and I had to go make a payment. He said to ignore that, and it appears he was right, as my account still says monthy prepaid voice on mytmobile.com.
Somehow, I think the tmobile voicemail system doesn't send a pickup signal unless it's going into a mailbox. Or, maybe the Google guys programmed their end to know about this non-answer, and ignores it.
Ok so i am on the same plan and here is what I got so far after having them turn off the VM feature. You can call Tmobile customer care free using *8646.
1)If Tmobile Phone number is called calls will either continue to ring or will get a busy signal once decline/text response is initiated
2) If GV number is called, phone will ring 5 times regardless of decline/text and will go to GV VM.
More short codes can be found here for t-mobile pre paid services.

How to get Google Voicemail on StraightTalk (with T-Mobile SIM card)
This also works to get Google Voice (GV) voicemail from Straight Talk if you are using their T-Mobile SIM card. For example, using the lovely cyanogenmod7 on my rooted old Motorola MB200, here are the steps I took:
I did not call customer service to get them to turn off my Straight Talk/ T-Mobile voicemail, since I don't think I'll need to.
In your cell phone (not GV)'s contacts list or address book, add a new contact with your Straight Talk/T-mobile mobile number (NOT your GV number).
While adding this new contact, select the Option to send your incoming calls for this contact straight to voicemail.
Call Settings > Voicemail Settings > Write down this number, and then change it to your new GV number.
I also UNchecked the LED voicemail notification box (so I won't even KNOW if my phone tries to tell me about Straight Talk/ T-Mobile voicemails).

For me, on cyanogenmod7, I stopped getting T-Mobile/StraightTalk voicemail notifcations by UNchecking the box at: Settings > Call Settings > Other Call Settings "Voicemail notifications".

It works, but as soon as you cycle power on your phone you loose the settings. At least I did on my Galaxy Nexus

Hmm, doesn't work for me, on ICS, Tmo $30 prepaid, galaxy s2.
Under call settings, voicemail service ... doesn't list a number, nothing to change.
In call, settings, there IS a "call forwarding" option for unanswered calls, with tmo voicemail number in it, but, I can't change this number, keeps saying network error when I try.
Anyone got this to work with ICS?

I'm on T-Mobile's Monthly 4G as well. What worked for me is I went into my phone settings and set the voicemail service to "my carrier" and the voicemail number to my Google Voice number. When I get a voicemail message I receive an SMS notification. Then I just dial my GV number and listen to the voicemail. This works if I decline the call or let it ring through. Seems to be an adequate solution for me.

What "voicemail number" where? There doesn't seem to be such an option in ICS, Samsung Galaxy SII, under "call settings -> voicemail".

oh wow I am glad I found this thread. I just switched to ST and from darkside to CM9 and now I cannot get GV to work anymore. Also you are correct there is no voicemail number in CM9 only call forward options which fail if you try to change them. Also why is there no call settings from the Settings menu, you can only get there from the Phone app lol. This really sucks because I am liking CM9 but need google voice so may have to go back to the darkside lol.
I take that back you can change the number but when you try changing the service from carrier to GV you get forwarding number change unsuccessful.

No it's ICS. I found out Tmobile prepaid doesn't allow call forwarding so GV doesn't work so that's why there is the work around in this thread except I cannot get it to work.

Just to be clear .... Google Voice works just fine, with a VOIP program (grooveip, talkatone, etc.) you can make calls over the wireless data plan, or use google voice straight on the tmo cell minutes.
The issue ... by default .....
1) calls to your tmo cell number get answered by your tmo voicemail, NOT by google voice mail.
2) Calls to your google voice, if forwarded to your cell number, ALSO get answered by your tmo voicemail.
So google voice works great and fine. There is an issue only if you want to use google VOICEMAIL ......
There are two scenarios .....
1) You ONLY want to use your google voice NUMBER, you never want to use your tomo number (or at least don't want to get voicemails if someone calls your tomo cell number.
The solution here is to simply turn off your tmo voicemail, and all calls to your google number will be answered on google voicemail if you don't pick up, and all calls to your tmo cell number will go to /dev/null (nowhere) if you don't pick up. BUT, if you're not giving anyone your tmo number,you don't care.
2) You want to use your google voicemail for google number calls, and you DO want to use tmo number and to have google voicemail, work for your tmo cell number i.e. you want to have two active numbers each going to google voicemail.
Well you can't. At least that's what we think for ICS ...
Post earlier in this thread shows a technique that might work on gingerbread, but, with ICS, doesn't seem to be anyway to forward the tmo voicemail number to google voice.
Please someone post back if they figure out a way to get this to work.

Guess I should have clarified I was only trying to get it for VM's. GV calls, sip etc all work fine for me.
Since I haven't been able to get my Google Voice set up with this device for some reason, I decided to set up visual voicemail through AT&T's "Messages" app. I had called 611 to figure out why GV wasn't working and the rep pointed me to this app. So far, it seems to work fine EXCEPT it also grabs my text messages and missed calls.
I'd rather not have two notification for every missed call (yes, it pops something in the notification bar for missed calls, as does the standard phone app). At this point, I don't even care which one is going to track them, I just want to turn one of their notifications off! Has anyone figured out a way to do that? Or, alternately, is there another way to access my AT&T visual voicemail without their messages app?

You can set-up google voice here is how to do it.
Go on to google.com/voice and go into settings.
Click activate your phone, and follow the instructions (it will tell you to type in a code on the Dialer).
Then, install the google voice app, and run through the set-up, you will fail on the configuring voicemail steps but thats okay.
Call 611 (ATT Technical support) and have them manually change your voice-mail number to your google voice number.
Done. Enjoy google voice as voicemail. The app will work as intended.

I have Google voice only to be voicemail; I don't currently use it for any calls. It looks like my Voice call-in number is a generic voicemail call-in number (although tbh I haven't tried calling that number to see what happens). Is that the number that I'd give AT&T?
Yes you give them your Google Voice number (you had to set one up when you got google voice)
If you go to https://www.google.com/voice#phones
You should see listed your google voice number, and your phone that you need to activate.

I tried this, and now cannot receive any calls. I think that the number that's shown there is a generic voicemail only mail. Going to try setting up a google voice number and do it again.
Edit to add: OK, I set myself up with a brand spanking new google voice number, had to monkey around on my phone a bit in "call" settings in the settings menu to fix my call forwarding. I repeated the steps, but didn't have to call AT&T again and everything is working goodly now.
I had sprint before I got my One X. Google Voice was set up just fine on that phone, but I want to have it on my One X now.
When I go to www.google.com/voice#phones I see my phone number but the carrier is listed as Sprint. Should I just change it to AT&T? Then run through the app setup? Not sure what to do here...

It's the Visual Voicemail app that other android LTE phones use (Vivid, Skyrocket).
Caveat: Since you added att messages, you will need to uninstall it first, and then call AT&T and ask them to revert you to basic voicemail. When you call your voicemail, you notice the voice prompts have changed from before, yes? That switched you to a different VM system incompatible with the old VVM app.
When I called, they switched me to LTE without VVM - i was able to just change from my online account back to regular LTE (with vvm) and install the app and voicemail was all setup and I was ready to go. I'm not sure if asking them to switch you to "old" vvm would work, their system might only show that you have VVM already.
This aforementioned app does voicemails only.
My phone is setup to use Google Voice for voicemails, but as of a couple days ago VMs are no longer going to GV and instead goes to the standard verizon voicemail.
Now when someone leaves me a voice mail, I get a notification in the notification bar, but I get the standard VM notification, not the GV one and nothing ever shows up in GV. Ive set my phones "voicemail service" setting to "my carrier" and deactivated GV (by dialing *73) and then able to access the Verizon VM via *86. I then tried reactivating GV by dialing *7 then my GV number and uninstalled/reinstalled GV app on my phone, but people are still directed to the verizon VM and not GV.
The only thing Ive changed in the last couple days is Ive applied the wifi prompt hack from here and the Wifi Toggle mod from here (which Ive since run the "return to stock" package).
Im running rooted stock ICS and below is a screenshot of the notification.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have the same problem - callers hear "this voicemail has not been setup" even though my GV greeting is set.
edit - to OP, make sure you've activated your phone number for GV voicemail in the google voice website.
Are the phone and correct number listed in Google Voice settings (online) as having been activated for Google voicemail?
You mentioned using *7GoogleVoiceNumber - isn't it supposed to be *71GoogleVoiceNumber ?

I have had this happen once or twice, each time I would have to dial *71<then your google voice number> and hit the send call button. This basically tells Verizon to forward missed calls to your GV voicemail.
You can also call Verizon and ask them what your call forwarding is set to, and they can fix it there as well.
For what it is worth though, I have been able to use the setup Voicemail feature within Google Voice, it would always come back with some kind of carrier issue.
Try the following 3:
*71 GV #
*90 GV #
*92 GV #
Ive verified Google Voice is configured for voice mails via the web site (which you can see in the 1st screenshot below). Ive also verified my voicemail carrier is set to Google Voice and that it matches my actual google voice number (seen in screenshots 2 and 3).
Ive also dialed the 3 numbers in the previous post (*71, *90, *92 + GV#) and verified voicemails are still being left on verizon. Ill call them tomorrow to verify my phone is in fact fowarding as it should be though.
Finally, just to make sure GV was actually working I also verified that calling my actual google voice number and leaving a voicemail does show the notification on my phone in the GV app.
Really not sure how in the heck this happened, like I said, Ive been using this without issue for months, and it wasnt until a day or two ago that this started happening. Is it possible that either of those hacks/mods applied caused this? I didnt realize until after I applied them that some mods require a deodexed ROM, so wasnt sure if that was the culprit.
Hoping to figure this out rather then revert to an old nandroid backup.

I had this problem too... On my Galaxy Nexus I could just play back my voice mails right through my main phone applications phone log but now with this phone I had to uncheck the box in google voice (on your phone) that says "Voicemail Display" allowing you to view and playback your voicemails from your call log. Soooo, I get all of my notifications now but they are through the google voice app instead of my phone app... Does this make any sense to you cause I am really tired but I tried everything and this was the best option... So uncheck the box for "Voicemail display" in google voice settings on your phone and you should be good to go if that is what you are looking for?? Also you can go right to your account online and make sure it is setup to forward to your gv number... Just go to "My Verizon and then My plans and services and then you will see a image at the top right of the screen saying "I want to" and hit the plus sign and you will see the options for forwarding your number.... Again, hope this helps a little but I don't know how your setup was before so I am just basing it on what my setup is...

While I didnt really follow the first part of your post, I did try changing forwarding via My Verizon as you mentioned and sure enough, that did the trick! For whatever reason the * commands must not have been working, but all works as it should now.

Yesterday 1 call went to my Verizon voicemail. All the rest went to Google Voice. It was late in the evening (around 6pm est). Working fine this morning. Someone must have pulled the wrong switch again at the mothership.

When I first configured my Verizon line and Android phone for Google Voice (with my Droid Incredible), it turned out that I had to call Verizon to have them properly enable forwarding because the * codes were not working. They said there was a configuration problem with my account, which took a couple levels of Support to eventually fix. So, I guess that means they could accidentally screw up anyone's account after-the-fact, too.

In phone settings, under voicemail provider, the only option I have is Voice Mail, there's no Google Voice option like they're used to be. I uninstalled and reinstalled Google Voice, went through setup, still no option under voicemail provider. All voicemails open with the standard phone app and it dials into voicemail...

The stock Samsung dialer will never show Google Voice voicemails. You still have to either use the Google Voice app for that, or the Google Dialer. Set it up with conditional call forwarding with your carrier and you'll be set.

It has shown in the stock dialer in the past. I think maybe the new Google Voice update broke something? Because after going through proper setup after reinstalling Voice, I can't get it to work at all. Stock phone app notifies me of voicemails, clicking that takes me to my dialer where I have to call in to check voicemails, and that sucks... How do you set up conditional call forwarding, within the Voice app? I've never had to do that before, and I've been using Voice since the beginning.
Again, to be clear, I'm not looking for Google voicemails in the stock dialer, like in hangouts. Open phone app, more, settings, scroll down to Voicemail - Service Provider. Normally, Google Voice is listed there as an option (instead of using your stock voicemail, you can select to use Google Voice for voicemail). This is what's missing. So every time I get a voicemail, it goes to the one where you have to DIAL into your voicemail! No voicemails go to Google Voice.
OK, I will repeat, because I must not have explained it properly:
You must set up conditional call forwarding. This is step #1, and it absolutely must be done.
Your carrier: T-Mobile Change carrier
Note: This feature does not work with T-Mobile prepaid phone plans.
Follow these steps to have your mobile phone use Google Voice for voicemail instead of your carrier's voicemail. You can always go back to using your carrier's voicemail later if you want, by entering another code. Learn more here.
Enter the following exactly as written, as if you are dialing someone:
**004*1(your area code & number here)#
Press "Send" or "Call" on your phone to dial that number. When you see the confirmation message on your phone, you are done!

I appreciate the help, I'll do this later today when I have a chance. I will say, though, that these steps are ABSOLUTELY not necessary for my T-Mobile Galaxy S7 Edge. For some reason, my fiance's regular S7 won't use Google Voice. So again, I'll try these steps later for her, thanks!

Don't forget the pound sign after your phone number. This method did work for my fiance's S7. I never had to go through all this with my S7 Edge, though.
I have the same problem. I tried the code above and get this error:
Call forwarding
Connection Problem or invalid MMI code.
I had the same issue. Noticed recently I wasn't getting my Google Voice voicemails when my phone started telling me to install Verizon's visual voicemail to view my voicemails. Setting Google Voice also wasn't an option all of a sudden in the phone app, as it had been for years. I also noticed when I opened the new Voice app on my phone, it promoted me to pick a new Voice number, so the recent updates must have broken something.
Anyways, this is how I fixed it.
1) On a PC, go to voice.google.com (log in, if you aren't already)
2) Hit the menu button, scroll down, and select 'Legacy Google Voice' (should open in a new window)
3) In the new window, you should see your Voice number and then your cell number below that
4) You should see a link that says 'Activate Google voicemail on this phone'. Click that.
5) A box will open telling you to dial and call *71(Your Google Voice number)
6) You should be good to go, I placed a test call and it worked like it always had before except for an a couple extra rings before voicemail kicked in.
I also did the following to get it to go straight to voicemail after the normal number of rings...
Under your cell number, hit 'Edit' > 'Show Advanced Settings' > 'Forwarding Options' > Select 'Go straight to voicemail' > 'Save'
YMMV but I hope this helps someone. It certainly had me stumped for a couple days lol.

I have a new SM j32 7T1 and it won't let me set call forwarding to anything but the pre-programmed MetroPCS voicemail everytime I put in my other phone number which I have two phones it says there's a network error which I don't think is an error I think it's the software will not allow me to put in a different number
Yeah, I got that "Connection Problem or invalid MMI code" code too after typing in the **004... code. However, I was able to successfully set up forwarding to my Google Voice by following the second step of instructions given. (Note: I recently bought this Galaxy S7 unlocked, previously T-Mobile carrier and need to set Google Voice as my voicemail - it was all set up on my previous phone, so I've done everything in Google Voice to set it up, and I had to of course install Google Voice on my new phone). Anyway, here's the instructions for setting up Google Voice as my voicemail on Galaxy S7:
(1) Tap phone icon to open phone app
(2) Tap 3-dot menu upper right corner
(3) Select: Settings
(4) Under CALL SETTINGS section select: More Settings
(5) Select: Call forwarding
(6) As the other person's instructions stated: leave the "Always forward" setting turned off, but tap the other 3 settings ("Forward when busy", etc.) and enter your Google number. Voila, all calls that you don't answer, for whatever reason, will go to your Google Voice where the caller will record a message, and you'll receive it via your Google Voice app.
