Please note that I use LCD Density of 200 instead of the standard 240.
- Requires ROOT -
There are several sources where the Gingerbread keyboard APK and SO library can be downloaded from (e.g. [1], [2], [3], [4] and [5]), but personally I used this one:
http://fabdroid.com/goodies/Fabolous_GBKB_Fix.zip
IMPORTANT NOTE: this ZIP file is a ClockWork Recovery update file ==> DO NOT USE IT !!! (it will remove your system odex files) Just unzip and grab the APK and SO files.
Because the Galaxy Tab doesn't ship with LatinIME.apk and libjni_latinime.so by default, there is normally nothing to backup. DOUBLE-CHECK to make sure this assumption is correct !! (/system/app/ and /system/lib/) MAKE BACKUPS if necessary.
I used Root Explorer to transfer the APK and SO files from my SD card into their respective system folders, and I fixed the file permissions.
I then went to the system preferences, looked at all the settings for "Android Keyboard" (by the way, haptic feedback/vibration doesn't seem to work). IMPORTANT: select your language in the list and get familiar with the keyboard options BEFORE using it. Then I set the keyboard as the default input method (instead of Smart Keyboard Pro, which I normally use).
I then opened the note-taking app to test the keyboard. It's all working very well, no Force-Closes/crashes. There's a little more latency than Smart Keyboard Pro (I feel), but it's no big deal. It could be related to the handling of multitouch typing. Otherwise the auto-completion / word prediction is nice, so are the popup keys.
I still prefer Smart Keyboard Pro (I might as well, given I paid for it ), but Gingerbread's keyboard is a definite improvement over the stock Froyo one !!
Cheers, Dan
EDIT: when using APKs extracted from the emulator image (system.img, 50MB, download links can be found on XDA), it is recommended to edit /system/build.prop and change "ro.build.version.sdk" to 9 instead of 8 (and reboot).

You mean the "arrow keys" (LEFT, RIGHT, UP and DOWN) ? That's one of the many features from Smart Keyboard Pro that justify its purchase
EDIT: finger-swipe left or right on top the Smart Keyboard Pro, and press the bottom left corner key => this should show the arrows keypad (also check the preferences to see if it is activated).

I like the new editing options and it has nicer colours, though find the keys a bit small. Shame they can't be increased like in smart keyboard pro. Will run with it a bit longer to see if I can get used to it.
[edit] removed pic as daniel has added it to his first post.

I added the landscape screenshot to the 1st post, thank you !
Please note that I use LCD Density of 200 instead of the standard 240. I'm not sure how the keyboard looks with other settings.

I use LCD density of 200 too so our captures match up .
Can't get it to do haptic touch despite setting it, but it's not something I usually turn on so no biggy.

well i installed the keyboard like u directed in the Verizon Galaxy Tab and it works perfect. Only downfall is the font is pretty small for a 7in screen. I dled the LCD Density app from market that requires root and changed it to 200 from default 240 and all my font for the whole device went much smaller but the keyboard did look better. Is there anyway to just change the LCD density for the keyboard to make that font bigger and not shrink the Whole Tab's font. Thanks for your help!

Confirm +1. No haptic. 2/3 the size of Samsung keyboard. Easier to use if you're used to an iphone or something with baby keys. Personally I need the bigger keys so its keyboard pro for me.

UPDATE: Updated to show all white keys where needed
Alright, so I was bored and feeling productive… as you see that is a good thing! I have redone the original Droid X multi touch keyboard to a better black version with a special Droid Eye style voice level meter (that works so well!) This version only has been tested on the Droid X 2.2 Deodexed Rom so feel free to test it for your own device – I will go ahead and tell you how to load this on your device below….
below....
GRAB BOTH Files HERE with other MODS
*UPDATED METHOD*
1. Download Zip from website above....
2. Place on SD Card of device
3. Boot into recovery (clockwork recovery or other custom recovery)
4. Install Zip from SD Card
5. Locate "WJDKeyboardMod.zip.zip" and click install
6. Reboot and ENJOY
-If that didn't work try this!
*The working way I done it requires you to grab “root explorer” via the market - or any other methods *
Grab APK from site above....
1. Grab Apk and Throw it on your SD Card
2. Open Root Explorer and navigate to /system/apps/
3. Rename LatinIME.apk to LatinIME.bak (this will back it up in case of any problems so you can revert back to stock)
4. Navigate to your SD Card via Root Explorer
5. Long press “DroidX_Multi_WJD.apk” and click copy
6. Navigate back to /system/apps/ via Root Explorer
7. Rename “DroidX_Multi_WJD.apk” to “LatinIME.apk” then reboot or power cycle your device
8. When device loads open Root Explorer
9. Navigate to /system/apps/
10. Tap “LatinIME.apk and click install
11. Once installed go to your devices “settings” then to “Language & Keyboard
12. Check the box next to “Multi-touch Keyboard” and make sure that is the selected input method
13. Enjoy
*Some multi touch keyboards floating around are not done well - you will notice the "&" symbol on most are "&" instead and float of the key - this and many other incorrect coding - so I fixed it up in this one and made sure all the keys were correct woohoo*
awesome job on the keyboard, thanks! swype is my primary but i d/l this for use in terminal emulator etc.
btw, what theme are you using? it looks like a black version of vanilla android
That is pretty awesome! Can you skin one with more transparent keys?
This is very nice. Thanks for contribution.
Ok, I used terminal emulator to mount the system rw then I renamed LatinIME.apk to .bak, then copied the new LatinIME.apk into the system/app/ directory, rebooted, was unable to install from Astro (don't have root explorer, no money right now), it only gives me the option to uninstall. Help please.
Alright guys - updated new easier method - enjoy the KB - I can't currently customize the KB for anyone right now since this is actually part of a ROM I am currently in the works with but as you can see from my slight contributions, I am legit and wanted to get that out - since we all know I don't want to J$#% yah lol
Wanted to spread the love
installed, i am quite impressed. thanks for the contribution, i love it!

This maybe just the screen your on - try holding down the menu button while on homescreen - this will show trans on both landscape and portrait - some screens bring up a white bg to the keyboard so it isn't trans and I would have to edit those apps as well....

Ok, your right. I was testing in the browser, assumed if it worked anywhere it would be there, lol. Tested again in the notepad widget and it's all good.
Any chance of an identical (or as close as possible) theme for swype? Like a lot, swype is my primary keyboard.

[THEME] Gingerbread Keyboard (3 versions)

Here it is! My themed Gingerbread Keyboard. There will be a total of 3 versions. A green, blue and red one. The theme is a permanent black background, with a "glowing" effect when pressed.
All three versions are based off the latest unrEVOked hacked GB keyboard with auto-correct and predictive text
Download it, and flash it in recovery. Then go to a text field, press and hold until you see the input method popup, select input method, then select Android Keyboard.

I would suggest white or maybe a grey.

If you have an AOSP keyboard already, it's going to replace it. If you dont have an AOSP it should come up as an optional keyboard in the keyboard menu.
And thanks for the compliments
I have an issue ... all versions of the gingerbread kb that I've tried only have dictionary / txt prediction working in english, I also type in Spanish so it would be nice to have working predictions for that language. Is there any way to fix this ?
Ok I just checked and I see the original HTC "Touch Input" keyboard still there in the input settings. So this wont replace the HTC keyboard, but it will replace an AOSP keyboard if you have one

I believe I read somewhere (regarding the Nexus and Gingerbread) that this is basically still beta and only supports English at this time.
I have the sprint lovers rom installed. I flashed this keyboard thru recovery. It said installed (enjoy etc) When I go to messages the same keyboard that was there before is present. In "Language & Keyboard" it only shows the slide it keyboard that i installed before as an option. What happened to the gingerbread keyboard?

Hmm... that's really weird. You're the first person that's happened to. It wont say Gingerbread Keyboard in the Language & Keyboard menu, it'll just say Android Keyboard. If you don't see Android Keyboard then try it again. If you still don't see Android Keyboard you can always rip the zip apart, pull the LatinIME apk, put it in your SD card, and just install it through Astro.
There is "Android Keyboard" in "Language & Keyboard" it has android keyboard settings underneath its title but no checkmark location to turn it on. FYI Slide It has both the slide it keyboard settings AND a square to place a check next to its name. Android has no square also installed LatinIME on SD used astro open it had 2 options to launch or uninstall. neither option worked. Deleted latin from Sd

Mine is actually the same way. I don't have a check next to Android Keyboard. Technically it's now the default stock keyboard, so it wont have a check next to it since you can't disable the stock default keyboard. Go to a text field, press and hold and select input method, and select Android Keyboard.

The outlined versions will be out in a day or two. Some personal stuff just hit me hard today and I wont have the time to do it until probably tomorrow. But it WILL come I promise.
Very good stuff, however I am sticking with the grey-backgrounded one. Pitch black is not my style.
See if you can remove that dark background and you will find more business here
Love it! Thanks for the new keyboard! Works great!

Anyone want Swype Keyboard?

Alright I think alot of us know about Swype on the droid X.
The beta is now open again, for all the android phones out there. It's realy easy to apply, and there's no wait, really, to get the swype keyboard. I myself abso-f**king-lutely LOVE it, because in landscape, the layout is a bit weird but you have a whole hell of a lot more space above the keyboard(all the better for scrolling and selecting your place in the text) plus, for me, even though i blazed on Smart Keyboard, im even faster with Swype.
You can apply for the beta here: http://beta.swype.com/
I don't know how long the beta opening will last. II were you and I wanted this keyboard, I'd go grab it ASAP. It's quite easy to install, by the way. Just make sure that your browser is in Android mode, not Desktop mode.(If it was Dolphin HD. YOu know what I mean, though, right?)
Screenshots coming soon, and will be on another post.

otherwise usability at its best!

You should Update it. There's still no disable Option, but when Swyping there's really no need for it, as the space is auto entered and all that, not to mention in my version(the newest, 2.29.71.20203.t100), its not all that space hogging. The engine for it doesnt pick up speech that well on the X10. At least, that's what it's shown me so far. It gets most of it, but for example i said 'be' a few time in testing, and it spat out 'the'.
Also, in my version, there's no smiley key. I think they turned it into a long press somewhere. I'll edit the post after I check.
...Is it really that boring of an input method????
Well, I have something the devs might look at. The site says the keyboard is skin/themeable by OEM's. Not sure what that stands for, but it's interesting. It'd be cool imho to skin it like the sense white letter/saymbol keys and then the delete, enter, symbol and whatnot stay the same.
For anyone who wants it, I'll soon have a video of me using the keyboard posted.
Its been done in the past.

I know its a new one lol i was just saying the skinning has been done in the past and the same templates work on the new one.
I have the newest version 2.29.71.20203.t100 with the skin in the link i posted in my previous post. Just took that skin and replaced the boring blue one with it.
Mind you my version isnt from the beta link above, although i am on the beta list, its from elsewhere with the checks removed. I just added the skin and signed it as the beta from the link wouldnt work even with just images replaced and re-signed obviously.

Ah ok. Could you show me how to do that?
First of all you need a working version (not from the beta link - obv) and secondly a skin which is in one of the XDA forums (cant remember off the top of my head), you might have to google it.
After that its a doddle and i will explain.
Once you have those or i will PM it tomorrow as its late and i have work in the morning. i will show you.
Not sure how to get those.

I agree the keys are bigger and better, but sometimes when you swype and it misses one letter in-between, you will find it very difficult to place the cursor there to key in that missing letter.
If possible, please leave a message in the forum, and let me hope it gets implemented.
Thank you.

If i remember correctly you can swype from the "swype" button to the sym button to get the arrows.

What's that? I use swype obviously, though still ive never used the stock. USed anysoftkeyboard, then better keyboard, then swiftkey, then smart keyboard pro, then swype. Almost NEVER stock.
And it is possible to double tap on the misspelled word, too.

MiLauncher for Tablets
I'm proud to announce the overhaul of the MIUI Launcher for Tablets.
It's been a very long time since I've updated the project, as when I left it, (due to not owning a tablet any more) I believed that it was working as I had intended on Tablets, sadly, as of Android 4.3 that was no longer the case.
With the release of Android 4.4 I obtained another tablet and decided to update the project. This is the result of my work, my research and the help of a few others, who will be mentioned below.
Please, provide feedback, hit thanks, and most importantly, enjoy it. Please understand that this is currently in beta, the bugs that it currently contains are all small graphical quality of life ones, and I'll be getting right on those.
As someone who is studying full time, please understand that I don't have a lot of free time, but I'll do my best to update this regularly and respond to any concerns or issues you may have.
I do not give permission for my work to be redistributed, direct linked or posted anywhere else other then XDA-developers.com or en.miui.com forums. Anyone who shares this must post a link to this thread and give credit.

Not really a ton to say as of yet
They're probably a little giant, brace yourself.

Bug or Graphical Issue / Work around
Beta 1:
The MIUI weather clock 4x2, Clock 2x1 and Clock 2x2 do not appear graphically correct on the HP Touchpad.
> Pending further feedback from other devices. Stock and non MIUI widgets work.
In the Launcher Settings -> Launcher: There is text that does not appear in english.
>This is the Hide Apps With a Pin Function.
Static Wallpapers seem blurred when using this launcher on the HP Touchpad.
> Pending further feedback from other devices, not sure if this is device specific or not, Live Wallpapers Seem to Work Fine.
There is text that does not appear in english in the themes market
Obviously as the market stuff is server side, I can't change that, however there may be a few local images > Pending further investigation.
MIUI Express Locker is terribly scaled, low res and buggy
> Disable Express Locker, which is stated in the install instructions anyway.
This is something I'm still looking into and I'm not sure if I can fix it, generally it's about as buggy and slow as most lock screen replacements anyway,
not sure if they've improved that from the last time I used MiHome on a phone > Pending further investigation.
If you have an issue be it graphical or performance based, the first step is to make sure it isn't a bug from your rom,
if you've excluded that possibility post in this thread, for me to be able to do anything with it, you must include;
Code:
Your Device Name
Your Android Version
Your Current Rom
Your Device DPI
Version of this Launcher
The problem.
If you haven't followed the install instructions below, don't expect me to do anything to resolve your issue until you do.
Part 1:
Download and Install MiHome-Step1.apk
Once the launcher loads, slide up from above the nav bar and hit "Launcher Settings."
Scroll down the options until you find "Cell Layout Type"
Hit it and select the option that suits your device best
Please choose wisely because you'll need to re-install the app to change this.
Part 2
Download and Install ZSC.mihome.BX.apk, (X being the latest version number)
You will be prompted to update MiHome, obviously confirm it.
Once MiHome loads, you may or may not notice a rather mangled looking clock widget.
I am aware of this and for the moment, delete it.
Head into launcher settings, if you don't have a physical menu button look in the next section.
Hit the "Lockscreen" option, uncheck "Use MiHome Locker",
this is the lockscreen replacement Xiaomi includes with the launcher.
It doesn't play well with larger screens or landscape as of the moment
Optional But Very Recommended
If you do not have a physical menu key,
long press an empty part of the screen and hit the "Toolbox" icon.
Select the "Launcher Settings" icon on the far right.
You'll see the icon is on your home screen, open the settings.
Hit the "Launcher" option, look down at the last option "Choose Swipe Up Gesture Function"
Hit it and select the last option "Swipe up to open Menu."
Now you can view all your options by sliding up from above the nav bar again!
If your transitions seem slow, or strange when changing home pages,
Head into "Launcher Settings", Hit Launcher
Hit "Screen Transition Effects" and select something other than "Classic",
This is optional, but Classic looks silly and makes the launcher seem less fluid.
It may also appear strangely on some devices.
Beta 1:
YOU MUST INSTALL STEP 1 THEN INSTALL STEP 2
Step 1 - Refer to the Instructions
Step 2 - Refer to the Instructions
Code:
I'm not responsible for anything that happens to your device, but I highly doubt anything will.
Why I should disable MIUI Lockscreen ? Can I apply theme ?
The lock screen causes graphical issues on larger screens, so feel free to enable it if you'd like, it also looks kind of weird when it's upscaled. Themes can be applied but so far it only affects icons, wallpapers and home screen related stuff. Hopefully, ill be able to fix the lock screen but for now, I recommend you disable it.
Lock screen:
Looks nice. Will try it soon, thanks!
Only work in landscape mode?
The launcher is very beautifull

MIUI doesn't use app drawer...look for an icon called Other apps on the last page of the drawer. it would be awesome if OP made an portrait version too...

what do you mean ? the standart grid size from mihome? or like me (note 2) from stock touchwiz launcher?
edit: it would be so nice if you can make a version for note 2...because the 4x5 grid from stock mihome is bad for the big screen

6x5 will do just fine. 5x4 will be exactly like iPad, plus the dock on both sizes. Anything more than 6x5 will be too cluttered for a small screen, like mine 7".
Thanks!
Nice to see this on my tab.
On very little bug: frame off photo widget is not showing complete.

do you release note 2 version today?
Later this afternoon Also, the way MiHome was developed to be only portrait, I'm not sure if i can add auto rotation at this point. If needed download "rotation locker in the play store
Unfortunatly due to storms in my area I'm unable to upload as I only have internet tethered from my phone, not two version up tomorrow.
Whats going on here ?! Something new about note 2 version??!!!
we are waiting
it works perfectly on my tablet... thanks....
sorry, but note 2 version is still waiting i pinned your thread so say if you dont have it

Floating Soft Keys is a simple app to avail you soft key functionality even in exanded desktop mode or if you don't want to wear out your hard buttons.
Floating Soft Keys makes use of Mark Wei's brilliant StandOut Library so if you like this app, please go and thank him in his thread if you haven't already.
FSK requires root to emulate input key events.
FSK is still in its initial phases so it might give some errors or cause some crashes. Please report to me and give logcat if possible. Also tell me your Android version. This will help make the app better.
MAKING THEMES FOR FSK v1.2+For FSK v1.2+, custom icon support has been added. To make your own custom icon theme, simply do the following:
1. Make 4 PNG images for the 4 buttons having square dimensions (default is 130x130)
2. The PNGs should be named as follows (without the quotes):
"back.png" (for back key)
"home.png" (for home key)
"menu.png" (for menu key)
"drag.png" (for the dragging button)NOTE: Names are case sensitive.
2. Put all these PNGs in one folder. Give the theme name to the folder (e.g. "Holo Keys" or "Black Keys" or "Alicia Keys")
3. Put this folder in the Floating Soft Keys folder found in your SD card (it will appear automatically after running the v1.2 app at least once)
Themes thus created can be used in the v1.2 app by selecting "Use custom icon". You will be prompted to select the icon.
If you would like to share your themes, post em in the thread or PM me. Due credit will be given.
As an example, attached below is a theme called "Bluish tint". You can download it, unzip it and place the "Bluish tint" folder (which is present inside the zip) in your Floating Soft Keys folder on your sdcard. Then you can use it as a theme by selecting "Use Custom Icons" in the app.
USER-CREATED THEMESHere I will post links to various themes created by you folks.
Shadowed White Navigation Keys by churapa
Grey icons by proctologist
Theme thread by Gil81
As of version 1.4.0, new icons were made default to suit the Holo theme. But if you liked the old icons better, you can still download em from this thread. The zip file has been attached.
Check the app out on the Play Store or check its code out on GitHub
Beautiful idea congratulations

For Android 4.1+, long-pressing the Menu icon opens up the recent apps. I am not sure about Android 4.0. But in 2.3 or below, it does not work.

Volume keys I probably can add, but I think power key is not allowed in Android for security concerns. I will check and let you know.
Can you please specify what caused the crash?? Also, which version of the app were you on?? Version 1.1.1 had a known bug that caused FC on older Android versions. That has been fixed in the latest version.

The force close is because long pressing home activates Google Now, which is not there in Gingerbread. Option to customize home long press action has been added in the new update (v1.3) which will be available on Play Store in an hour or so.
very useful. Thanks!
Usefull app...thankyou
installed on my gnex toro running pa 356
just installed and giving it a good run.thanks for the app, great idea adds some versatility to your device.
Simply perfect!
Runs without issues on Omega ROM v23 on my Galaxy S2 I9100!!
Thanks and good work!
Thanks OP this is just what I've been looking for to have a fullscreen experience on my phone and tablet. Is it possible in future to have to option to add custom buttons with custom actions? That would be awesome. Thanks
Well idea is good... since its in initial state of development lacks many basic feature... the response between touch and action is high.. around 1sec
Well dre are few suggestion but the main from my side is that the drag button could also act as expand button, i mean click on drag should expand or shrink the navibar...
Well i confirm Working great with
Samsung galaxy S2 I9100
Slimbean 4.2.2. Build 7
Dorimanx 9.34
Great job mate...!!! :good:
Didn't find any major bugs apart from some layout issues...
lovely app...
here's my wish list for next releases:
- option to hide cross icon (just make invisible)
- customizable press and long press options for all softkeys
- align keys in vertical position, i'd be great to use with one hand having keys on side of screen
- didn't try to import icons from famous navbar icons thread, i'd like to be able to import from there
Just what I've been after for my XOOM, great work :victory:
UUUUU looks nice
I am probably being stupid here but how do you enable these? Trying to use them on my Motorola Atrix which has a partially working screen but I can't use the Menu hardware button, this would solve the problem!
Anyway to start and stop this app using tasker?
