no mms video with wp7? - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

a friend of mine has been trying to send me a video of her daughter, first i found out that att has a low mms limit cap, so in order to get her to receive video from me, i had to make sure it was under 300kb(what a joke)
anyways she tells me that her phone is unable to send mms video,
after some digging i found this to be true.
why did MS leave such a key feature out of this OS?
is it something a update with fix like apple did with the iphone?
she has the samsung.
sorry, im out of my comfort zone here, im a android guy with a rooted evo.
thanks everyone for the help, and hello from android land!

afraid this is true... hopefully MS fixes it up soon. it's a bit retarded.

Erm......email it? Surprised anyone still uses MMS.

the downfall at present is that videos are trapped on the phone and only transferable via Zune. Pictures are fine, they can be sent across email/mms. it's just video.

Now then, I am a self declared WP7 "fanboy" but even I must admit, this needs fixing!

I can't say I have ever MMSed a video to anyone before....I'm not saying others don't have a burning need to, but is it really that urgent?

Well, sometimes there is a need to share a video you took of your two year old playing at a park with your close ones, sometimes it happens when there is no computer around for a few days (vacation for instance). If you are willing to wait till you get to your PC it is one thing, but sometimes you want to do it right that second.

and those goofy video FWDs as well...
ive always mms'd with ppl, could believe it when i found out this big deal smart phone left that feature out....

i thought it was set by carrier.
when i try to send larger files via mms, it will go through on my end , but whatever carrier they have ill get a message saying the phone numbers carrier has a message size limit.

Nope

Can't do that either from the phone. The only way to share a video from a WP is to get it onto a PC first.

WOW! So old school you'd suggest emailing a vid rather than mms it! Sounds like my grandparents, lol. But seriously most people in the 21st century would like to have this option. It's a glaring problem for this OS.
I'm currently out of state for work, my kids wanted to send me a vid of them being funny. They have no computer with them & are staying with my parents, who have no internet or computer, lol. Guess what? They couldn't send it via mms! They & I were dissappointed that I couldn't see this video of my daughters.
That is when it can be a GLARING problem for people who enjoy this convenience. I love WP7, but it's obvious they were in a rush to get this OS out to save some jobs & keep investors happy. This is an embarassing hole left in this OS, that needs fixed ASAP.

Not sure what the big deal is. When the iPhone first came out it didn't even have mms picture messaging while every phone on the market had it and no one made a fuss about it. I've never sent anyone video messages and I don't know anyone who did either.

Stop living in the past, the iPhone came out four years ago. Not being able to share videos from your phone, today, is ridiculous. While I haven't MMSed videos myself I have often shared them on YouTube or via email - this isn't even available on WP7. Also, just because you don't use it doesn't mean noone else does.

I'm sorry but when the iPhone came out EVERY OTHER phone on the market could do MMS, however we didn't hear people say that it was ridiculous that the iPhone couldn't do MMS when everyone else could.

Actually, everyone bar the Apple fanbois thought it was ridiculous. Just like everyone bar Microsoft-ites now thinks it's ridiculous that WP7 can't.
If Video MMS was not the de-facto standard today noone would care if WP7 had the ability or not. Fact is, all cameraphones today offer this feature, therefore it comes as a complete shock to the average consumer that their brand new WP7 device does not.
Of course, more and more people don't MMS these days when everyone has a smartphone with YouTube apps and email. Problem is, WP7 doesn't even allow you to share your video on YT or via email unless you first sync it to a computer.

Please do not use "we" since obviously you weren't watching the comments and blog post roll in about how ridiculous of an omission it is.
The fact that video mms is not present is infuriating. I USED to do video mms with my wife all the time on my Touch Pro2. With no option, I've been forced to stop. For MS to advertise WP7 as the "get in and get out" OS, this is a straight slap in the face.

I'm surprised people are still telling others to email files when every other smart and feature phone allows users to send video over MMS.

Fring is such a half-assed app

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't work. I'm talking about the skype video chat feature with a PC. So frustrated.
I tried it for the first time today and I have to agree. It wasn't showing friends on Google Talk that were online in the real app. And it wouldn't show anyone online in Skype. And on top of that, it wouldn't do calls between Gtalk clients or Skype either, it just kept dialing and disconnecting.
I uninstalled it, it's obviously junk.
I haven't have any problems with it yet (I've only used it a handful of times), I would not complain anyway.
It's a free app and it's being run on a phone released less than a month ago.
Time will help.

No offense to op. impo, i think its disrepectful to the devs working hard to make apps or this app in particular, to post a thread just to rag on their work, which is obviously intended to improve OUR user experience. Android is indeed open source and if i want better, i am more than welcome to write up something myself.....to improve the app a pm containing your problems in detail wouldve probably been a bit more considerate, and a proper way to handle this issue. Good luck with future app flamings

i think this thread is useless. fring works for me perfectly. video chat does go down but that is probably because of the fact that qik is so garbage and EVERYONE is trying to use fring all of a sudden. their servers were probably not ready for the massive onslaught of the EVO. I feel like i do have the right to bag on Qik because they are supported by Sprint and all their $$$ and their video quality is nowhere near as good as fring.

Agreed.. Qik has been a 100% letdown.. Sprint should remove their affiliation and offer better alternatives. The verification system for Qik is lame, the constant updates in the last week has been lame.. Overall a garbage experience.
fring is ok, aside from that i keep seeing MagnusRagnarok posting with those letters and size that suck, and i think his the only one who does it, and everytime i see those letters i skip his post i have seriously never read what he has to say, its disturbing.
Works quite well for me (Fring) and I use it all the time. Qik? Total POS. I've never been able to use is successfully, and even if it I did, I can only call other Evo's? GMAFB Sounds like Apple's FaceTime crap.
+100 Fring - combines all of my "chat" and video conference apps into one, and does it on my cell phone! I video conference with people on PC's all the time with Fring. Sure, the quality isn't HD or anything, but... do I have to say it again? I CAN DO IT - ON MY CELL PHONE! LOL
While I'm repeating myself... Qik can KMA. Sprint should put their development money into Fring... its a lot farther along, and those guys deserve a big break.
WTF is up with Fring ???? been having problems with it for like the last 30 minutes... cant log in.. tried changing password... even tried it from a pc and no dice

It works for me, pretty flawless too. Fring > Qik
I don't like how fring looks. I tried video calls on the EVO and there is so much white space, it makes it look cheap and ugly. I wish you could drag video windows around or make them full screen.
I just did an EvO to iPhone video with my friend and i had to keep the volume about half way, otherwise he sounds distorted on my end. Kind of sounds like my speaker is blown(its not) if i raise the volume passed the half way point. I could hear him clearly though. There were times where he said he couldn't hear me at all and he said he had his volume all the way up. I hope these are lil bugs that get fixed. Otherwise, it's pretty good

Amen to that. Qik is garbage. I can't see anyone putting that app over fring. More options and IMHO better interface.
i think fring removed skype due to verizon's contract with skype...i.e. no more video skype from fring!

[Q] Camera doesn't work while on phone call?

I am currently running leaked version of 2.2 for my Captivate and the stock android camera app doesn't seem to work while on a voice call. I also encountered the same problem when I was running stock firmware out of the box. When I open the stock android camera during a voice call the app launched with a pop up message stating: Warning unable to start camera during call. Is this some restriction put in place from the carrier or the camera application?
i have had the same exact problem as you... there has litterly been thousands of times recently where i am talking to somebody on the phone, and then i have the sudden urge to take a picture, but havent been able too... hopefully somebody gets right on this pronto!
EDIT: okay ill admit, that was a crapload of sarcasm there... but who is in that big of a hurry to take a picture?
yeah that through me off too when I got the phone, about the only thing the phone won't do during a call. but it was always that way.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk
It is not about being in a hurry to take a picture it is about freedom to do what you want when you want with the device you purchased.
works fine on any other android device. seems like a carrier or manufacturer limitation to me.
download vignette, or most likely any camera app other than the stock captivate app, works.. now you can drive while talking on the phone and taking pictures all at the same time
But you cannot record in 720p. And the interface doesn't match the quality of the stock app.
So that makes it seem like its absolutely the camera app itself. Why would this limit be placed? For driving like i have a leg suggested? Even if that was the intentent, who placed it? Samsung? AT&T? Does this same problem happen when using a non Captivate, Samsung created firmware?

what you never had a conversation with someone and saw something that was interesting and wanted to send them a text/email with a picture while still on the phone? I honestly have tried it for that reason and was disappointed. I mean you can check texts and emails while talking as well as send them and surf the web and get directions, all things that I do whole on the phone. so why not take pictures to attach to those messages?
I hope a workaround or good third party app becomes available.

I'm almost positive it's a Samsung thing. This has really bugged me for a while too, I was so used to taking pictures on my iPhone 3G anytime. My friend with a Samsung feature phone couldn't take pictures with low battery while my iPhone would click away until it was dead.
Once I got my Captivate and tried taking a picture with low battery, not like the battery life is great to begin with, and I wasn't allowed. Samsung shouldn't be able to decide when we can take pictures. I really hope that at some point we can take pictures and this device will be unlocked from Samsung's grips that much more.

Skype 2 video available

The latest Skype update for Android is available to everyone, but it only enables video chat on four specific handsets. Fortunately, impatient modders have gone some way to correcting this profound injustice, by creating APKs that activate video calling on other handsets too. So far we've heard of successful ports on the Samsung Galaxy S II and the HTC Sensation, Thunderbolt and EVO 4G. If you've got some other handset with Android 2.3, a little experimentation with the APK might also be worth your while. However, we just tried it on an Xperia Arc and didn't get very far: the app ran, but efforts to communicate with an Xperia Neo resulted in one-way video, a locked landscape mode and plenty of awkwardness. Let us know if you fare better -- you'll find a Thunderbolt-specific download at the DroidLife source link, and a more general APK at TechPetals.

Figured I would drop this in here if anyone has some know how and wants to look into it to see if there is anyway for us to have this on our phone. Doubt it though considering it requires 2.3 which seems to be the standard for google video chat and stuff, but hey, its worth a shot!!!
Found some more info. Tested and still didn't work but apparently on our device but confirmed on the SGS2. Here is the link for the guy who got it working.

Yeah, one of Google's big thing at IO was that they wanted to eliminate the fragmentation, yet I haven't seen anything to indicate they're taking steps to achieve this.
Unfortunately it's one big advantage Apple has... they take a hard line position that the carrier doesn't touch the OS software, nor prevent the deployment of the updates. Not sure why Google is such a wuss when it comes to holding the carriers accountable for the timely delivery of their updates. AT&T says it's because they have to ensure a quality user experience, but comon, what AT&T customer actually believes that crap? LOL

I personally have to try and remember the threads I participated in and see if someone replied. This seems very redundant but I don't see a better way to be notified. Thanks in advance

The only true advantage that Apple has over Android is that they only more or less support one device. Android is spread amongst how many different devices? It's easy to put out lackluster updates to a single device, but putting out updates to 20+ different devices isn't so easy.
how are you guys even getting it to install? is it actually working?
yes please, can any one confirm that the video call on Skype is working on the infuse?

no it is not working. installing the custom apk does give you the video call option, but if you press it, it goes into landscape to prepare for video call and then it does nothing. gingerbread is needed since it uses the frontfacing camera api.

Even if Skype supports video on the Infuse, I don't think I will start using it unless they address the battery usage.

Threaded Group SMS!?

Can someone with the One X comment on whether or not the device supports threaded group SMS w/ iPhone and Blackberry users? My biggest gripe with the Galaxy Nexus was that when I received group SMS messages, it wouldn't show the group and threaded responses. Instead, it showed separate messages for each response from each user. Coming from an iPhone, this is a must have feature for me and I wanted to know if the One X supported it. Thanks.
If it doesn't there is an SMS app you can get that supports threaded group chat. Not sure of the name, but it's out there.

I'm concerned, I'm coming from a blackberry and I use that function all the time. My One X is on order so if it doesn't, I'm SOL already haha
I sent out a massive group text when I got my phone to inform everyone of my new number, but the responses came back in their own threads.
It's not something I would utilize very often, so I'm not too concerned about finding an app to do it. I'm pretty happy with the stock Messaging app aside from this.

Thanks for letting me know about this. Just to confirm, there are no options to turn Group SMS (or MMS) on in the settings of the messaging app? I currently have many group chats with work colleagues as well as personal friends and this might be a deal killer for me (unfortunately).
Received messages go in their own threads, I've been looking in the settings and don't see a way to change that so far.
If your group consists solely of smartphone users, why not use whatsapp?

We used to but since everyone switch to the iPhone and Blackberry there has been no reason to. I'll be the first one in the "groups" to switch to Android and not having this basic functionality sucks. Even dumb phones are able to do this nowadays so I'm pretty disappointed.

Problem with GroupMe is that if someone had once installed the app and then subsequently deleted it, the app doesn't recognize that and fails to send them the message. Unfortunately, most people I know have at some time or another, used GroupMe and then gotten rid of it.

This is by far the most infuriating part of this phone.. My three year old BlackBerry supported group chat, but my top of the line android phone has to use a third party app that stumbles, doesn't send, triple sends, and is so freaking ugly. How hard can it be for someone to fix it so I don't have to have an app and can use the stock messaging program to talk with my friends.

OH Jeeeeez. I finally switched over from my iPhone 4S... because ICS and the One XL seemed to finally have come up to par with Apple's platform. Love the lightning fast LTE, the camera is only marginally worse than the 4S (close though)... and the screen is gorgeous on the XL! HOWEVER... I get a lot of group texts from my foodie friends with pics of food, or whatever... and actually... this situation with the inability to deal with those texts is almost a deal breaker for me! I had no idea ICS hadn't dealt with that yet... and worse... even HTC hasn't been able to recognize and address that shortcoming with all their coding expertise either? Yikes... I'm either going to have to go back to the 4S, or deal with a flagship phone that fails on a very basic requirement in 2012...
What a buzzkill...

Okay everybody... check this out. I was looking for a way to get Visual Voicemail working on my One XL... and ran into a dead end. Finally got in touch with a helpful ATT "Advanced Tech Support" guy (after being forwarded from standard tech support)... and he directed me not to the AT&T Visual Voicemail app that is not compatible with the One X... but he says the AT&T Messages app is the one I need. So I installed it... and not only does it work very well for visual voicemail on the One X... the SMS/MMS feature of the app ACTUALLY THREADS GROUP SMS/MMS !!!! And pretty well too.
I've only had it installed about a half hour... but if it's not too buggy... I think this App not only solves the Visual Voicemail issue... but also potentially the SMS/MMS group threading problem. It won't have tons of features for power users (not very customizable... unfortunately)... but for those of us who NEEDED threaded group texts... we may be all set.
Linky below...
(Update: I was not able to post the link because I'm new to the forum... just search for "AT&T Messages" in the Android store.)

Why on Earth do people use MMS? Am I missing something here?

Every time a device gets AOSP (for the first time) I see a flood of posts whining about MMS being broken. (I've had an Evo 4G and an Evo 3D and saw this on both when they first got AOSP, now I see it in the unofficial CM9 thread here.)
Why MMS? What's good about MMS that you can't get with any other app or service?
Did I miss the train?
Do you know what mms is? From your post it doesn't sound like it.

Yea.. I gather that as well.
How else would one sext and send nudes?
1) It's universal.
No matter what phone the other person is using, chances are it supports MMS.
2) It's in-line.
Unlike email, you can just go "Here's a picture" instead of "I just sent you an email, you should go check it out"

I know its a serious question but made me laugh a bit. "Why God why!!" Lol
My girlfriend and I send MMS's (plural?lol) all the time. Sometimes she wants to send me something she saw or maybe a new outfit she bought With email I don't always have autosync on for battery life and its just that extra hassle. If I'm trying to send something pretty high resolution I will use email though since it doesn't compress it.
its the easiest and fastest way to send a pic to a person on another mobile phone, any other mobile phone, any OS, any platform, any carrier.
was this a joke?

I guess I just don't get why you couldn't just email pictures or videos. All you have to do is tap after you've taken your picture and the UI asks how you want to share it. I don't know a single human being who still uses MMS outside of these forums and maybe my mother, who keeps buying feature-phones. :^\
It's easier to send a quick picture to a phone than through email. I don't know much of my friend's email addresses off the top of my head

Who wants to tell every single person to email them pics instead of texting them. Reminds me of the first few years of the iPhone.

I guess the bigger question is why not?
Almost not wanting to dignify the question... But....
Mms is also used as a group chat in messaging apps like gosms. Allows you to text multiple people at once and everyone in the chat can see everyone elses response. Just fyi

I have a lot of friends who use mms that aren't a part of the forums. As a matter of fact, I'm positive none of my friends are on the forums.

Here is a better question: Why do people still use CDMA carriers such as verizon and sprint? SIM lacking carriers are almost non-existant outside the USA.
Why MMS??? Then why sms ?? Yeah you could SMS but then if u wanted to send a pic or video then you would have to open a separete app which takes more time mms is simply faster
