[Q] Motorola Milestone - help with WiFi connection - General Questions and Answers

Hi,
Recently I had occasion to do a hard reset of my Milestone. I had used Universal Androot and then tried to install an Apps2SD application called App2Card. Unfortunately, things got a bit screwed up and I had to do a hard reset.
Post that, everything else works fine but the WiFi refuses to connect. It finds the various APs around but always says "Obtaining IP address from XXX..." and then "Connection failed". I tried resetting it again but this problem still persists. Tried it on my home network, office network, without security, etc but still no luck. I tried assigning a fixed IP address too, along with all the settings required. This works (as in, the WiFi icon appears on the taskbar, it says it is connected) but I can't surf or use any application that needs internet connectivity.
It used to connect to both home and office networks perfectly before. There have been no security or other setting changes on either of these networks. I also tried some open public WiFi networks, but the same problem persists.
Till this event occurred, I have been using WiFi on my home and office network with no problem at all. So it can't be a network issue.
Does anyone have any suggestions I can try? Any help appreciated!

Android Version: 2.1

[Urgent] WiFi problem

I can connect the the network, I can browse the internet for a few mins, but then I start getting DNS errors.
The WiFi is still connected, but NO webpage will open. I can still open my modem's page (192.168.1.1), but anything that involved DNS won't work.
Please help me solve this. I'm on an Elfin running WM6.5.3 (Onyx ROM). No one else using that rom is having this problem.
Thanks.
tried various wifi routers? i.e., go to friends houses and try there..?
can other wifi devices use dns when yours stops working?
Yeah, my laptop works fine. I've tried this at many places, same problem.
I flashed to a previous ROM version, another ROM, hard resetted, nothing solves this.
Partial wifi solution

I have the same issue on [08.02.2010][ROM][PLK][WM 6.5 BULID 21891] eXperience V 10 FINALES. After soft reset / swiching off/on wifi doesnt work. It shows up gree field as connected but now opening web pages, nor getting emails etc. No program can use internet.
I found that there is no wifi connection "mini tower" on the top bar. The problem is "solved" when I open wifi card settings, and temporary write static Ip. After ok, and after coming back to properties and changing to dynamic (dhcp) again it starts to move.
I also noticed strange IP being in the static Ip field it says something like f1::f1f3...etc. So dummy IP adres with hexadecimal code.

[Q] Cognition 4.5.2 & NO WiFi connection??

I just flashed Cognition 4.5.2 to my Captivate S but I can't connect to my WiFi network. It sees my secured network WPA/WPA2 PSK but will not allow me to connect to it. Signal strength reports Excellent. After inputting password it does the authenticating and comes back with a message Disabled, Secured with WPA/WPA2 PSK.
Is there a problem with this ROM release & secured WiFi networks. It worked with stock ROM FROYO 2.2 before update.
Anyone else having this problem?
I am having the exact same issue. I get the "Disabled, Secured with WPA/WPA2 PSK" message after a failed connection. If I click on the network again I'm prompted for the password, which I am 100% sure is correct, then the same cycle - authenticating, then the disabled message.
I've tried a static IP setting with the same results.
If I set the network to open, it works fine.
I flashed from 2.3.7 and it was working fine on that version.
Fixed Problem.....
OK so I discovered there is indeed a reported problem with this release. Cognition has a newer release 4.5.3. Downloaded that, flashed it & bingo wifi now works.

[Q] WiFi Disabled

Samsung Galaxy IIS Skyrocket sghi727, ANDROID 2.3.5, Kernel 2.6.35.11, baseband I727uckj2 Build Gingerbread. AT&T network. WiFi worked ok on Home system and allowed phone to connect/transmit/receive data.
Now, it scans and identifies the Home system but gives a WiFi remembered message then a WiFi Disabled message. I can not connect the phone to the home WiFi network. I have ATT DSL with Speedstream 5600 modem and an "N" router. I have "G" appliances connected and running as well at the same time.
The home modem and WiFi system are working well (I'm on a laptop using WiFi now). I have checked the password and it is entered correctly. I have tried to "forget" and re-enter the Home system WiFi info to no avail.
I used the Skyrocket's manage applications to try to stop some of the apps that I wasn't using (Social Hub, for example) but they keep reloading. I went to the apps pages and drag/dropped those I wasn't using...they are still showing up as being in place (and taking up space) but that didn't appear to get rid of them either.
I tried a reboot. No change. Other than ATT's general disagreeableness, and my lack of knowledge on this operating system, what's causing the problem and how can I fix it? If I have a file that isn't loading or an app that isn't loading, how do I replace/repair them? What files & apps MUST run to use the WiFi?
Thank you for your assistance in this matter, I have read all the "WiFi disabled" links that the forum suggested prior to this posting.
Kev.
Hm, have you tried connecting at any other wireless spots? If you can connect to other wireless routers I would try resetting your router, see if it can connect to an all-default wireless router. If it can't connect to any wireless routers, well, you can either try flashing a different ROM or, since I get the impression you're not into rooting/flashing/messing with your phone, just take it back to the store and make them give you a new one.
I thank you!
I will try that though it was working at work the other day.
If someone has another idea, I'd like to hear that too.
Cordially,
Kev.
WiFi disabled: Solved!
OK, I finally figured it out. I had read all of the WiFi posts on the thread that mentioned WiFi & disabled. One from 2006 was for a different (ancient) phone.
My GF has an old XP desktop PC which is connected to the network via Ethernet cable. For some undetermined reason, when it hooks up to the home network, it locks any new system that is not running out. If they're up and running when it boots up, everything is fine. If they're shut off or the WiFi isn't connected, they're locked out.
The solution is to get rid of the old PC. The 2006 poster said that his phone would not connect to his WiFi if anything else connected at a different speed. Evidently this is a related phenomenon.
(At least I didn't mess the thing up!)

[Q] Broken WiFi after OTA to ICS

Started with 2.3.6, OTA to ICS failed repeatedly, finally fxz'd to 2.3.5, then OTA to 2.3.6 then to ICS per jimbridgman's instructions. Everything worked perfectly except for the WiFi, which under "WI-FI NETWORKS" now constantly flashes between "Connecting..." and "Saved, secured with WPA2". But there is no connection and the signal shows very low (which it's not). If I forget the connection the network shows up very strong. This connection had been working flawlessly with both the phone and my laptop since April.
Under "Wi-Fi Settings" , if I hold down on the network and go to "Modify Network" and under "Show advanced options", the "IP settings" were set to DHCP which should have worked, but if I change it from DHCP to Static, an incorrect IP comes up (192.168.1.128, should be 192.168.0.128) AND the "Save" button goes dark! I can edit the address and gateway and all the other settings but it won't save them.
I have rebooted the phone and the wifi router several times and changed some of the settings on the router. I also tried turning off all 3 devices, started the router, then the phone, then the laptop, all to no avail. Reverted the settings on my router. Never had a connection problem on the laptop through all of this.
Rooted the phone also per jimbridgman’s instructions. Installed Titanium Backup. Uninstalled the ATT Smart wifi app (I KNOW, SHOULD HAVE FROZE IT INSTEAD) with no change. Reinstalled the app from the Play Store. No change. Froze Smart Actions from Titanium Backup, that did seem to change to flash pattern on the wifi network, and I can now set it to “AUTO” from DHCP, which I wasn’t able to do before, but otherwise there is no real change. I did reboot after each change.
I sure hope someone can help a NOOB with this… I need the wifi.
Thanks in advance,,
Wireless N protocol
After fiddling with this most of the day I looked at the connection attempts from the router interface: Apparently the Atrix 2 is NOT using wireless N anymore, and the rest of my network is.
Anyone know how to set the wireless protocol in the Atrix 2?
Connected in G mode
Changed the router to mixed mode and the A2 connected, checked the client list on the router and it connected in wireless G mode. Ugh. I'd really like to keep this thing in the N mode.
Any suggestions? Anyone else seeing this? There's gotta be a way to change it to N mode, especially since it was using that mode exclusively before ICS.
Thanks,

Wifi Mobile Tethering

Hi All,
I hope im not duplicating this question ( i have searched with no results).
Recently Ive been having a problem with the mobile tethering from the tablet. My phone shows connecting, connects for a few seconds and disconnects. This happens a few times then it shows the message Authentication Error.
Im trying to connect my Note 5 which is on 5.1.1 but the tablet is on 5.0.2.
I have tried the following already:
Changed SSID to a different name;
I changed the broadcast channel to a specific channel;
I cleared data of Google Services Framework (messed up the syncing of my Google account but resolved this);
I changed the password;
I changed from Allowed devices only to all devices and back;
Removed security and password to connect;
Deleted the device as an allowed device and re-added it.
On the Note 5:
I forgot the network and reconnected;
I reset settings in the backup and reset menu (this is missing on the tablet)
The phone connects to other wifi networks.
Ive noticed the issue starts in my office but at home I manage to connect sometimes. It does disconnect from time to time.
This started about a month back, before that it connected without any issues. Any ideas what i should check or reset to resolve this? I don't want to do a factory reset. Connecting via bluetooth works perfectly still.
Thank you,
Any help please?
Any ideas why the tethering would not work at certain locations?
