There have been a couple of discussion topics with regards to the keyboard on the tab and various replacements. I myself have been using a few keyboards but have finally settled on Smart Keyboard. I did however still struggle typing in landscape as my thumbs and fingers just weren't long enough. So what was the solution?
A combination of Smart Keyboard & Thumb Keyboard from the Market.
But how annoying is it switching between keyboard manually each time? This is where the fantastic keyboard switching app comes in and automatically changes your keyboard based on rotation.
All credit to ne0fhyk - you can find his application here.
I'm using SlideIT keyboard and it works perfectly, even swype works, can use primary and secondary languages, dictation... It was a must for me because the Hungarian language support...
i use two keyboards. One for each orientation. In portrait i use smart keyboard. In landscape i use thumb keyboard. I use an app called a keyboard manager that automatically changes the keyboard based on my orientation. Its the perfect setup. Here is a screenshot of thumb keyboard:

i will admit that thumb keyboard is still in development. The auto correct feature isnt working yet but the dev said hes working hard on it. I think once its done this is gonna be on popular app for tablets. It works very well on the tab. Check out my review here:

Thumb keyboard is like $1.37 in the market. It might go up once it gets popular. Check it out.

Yep, text prediction features are added just yesterday. As well as some other nice features.
Hey, i just downloaded, and am using now the thumb keyboard, but my landscape is a full keyboard, not your screenshot.
Do you know of this is a setting i can't seem to find, or maybe it was changed?
I can't imagine it would be a corrupt install. D:
Anyone?

Long-press on the keyboard icon (lower left corner). There you can change the layout to a tablet layout. The pictured landscape keyboard is the keyboard belonging to the tablet 7" layout 1 and layout 2.

I'm trying to find a large screen keyboard that I can use with my fingers instead of the stylus. Can anyone recommend a good one to use.. any freeware or otherwise.
Thanks
I like thumbkeys (or bigkeys) or something like that. It changed name.
Not free, but for me, nicely skinnable, i wrote a skinner for it and made a couple of thumb friendly layouts.
Many similar, but I like this for the effort.

Spb Full Screen Keyboard - it's just been updated to version 3 with portrait (real qwerty, not offset like above) and landscape modes, WM2K3/5 support and a number of other features like spelling correction/learning.
Thanks for that, but I couldn't find thumbkeys or bigkeys on google.
I did come across Tengo Thumb.. I'm downloading it now, hopefully it's good.
If you have a link to your app that would be great.

Just what I'm after... Thank you!!
Sorry, touch keyboard:
http://www.orthancsoftware.com/TKeyboard.htm
mtbsoft: my keyboard layout is not by accident, it's by design.
Print it out and try typing with it using one thumb.
I find it better (on a smaller screen like the Magician) then the standard QWERTY. I also use a fullscreen landscape keyboard using regular qwerty, for two thumbs.
I also did a modified fitaly and some others for symbols, calculator layout for numbers etc. But I use this one daily.
(SPB's fullscreen portrait)
I'm sure most keyboard apps are fully skinnable now though.

Yes, I've just switched keyboards and totally agree.

yep. i got fed up with the asus one
I agree. The stock one is almost unusable because it lags so much.
I went to stock. The Asus one was laggy, unresponsive etc.. I do like their layout better though.

If you want the swipe type keyboard then I would suggest flex T9, if you want one to type with then I would recommend smart keyboard pro which allows you to change the width and height of the keys to suit your finger size. They are both available on the market but will cost you a little bit for the privilege however they are both fantastic to use without any lag. I prefer the flexT9 one as swiping is my preferred method of text entry.
thumb keyboard gets a nod from me.. and the new v4 beta adds some great new features.. also, I posted a while back that for some reason, text entry on some forums is inherantly laggy on the stock browser, no matter what keyboard you use (try switching to Firefox) to see what I mean so its possible the Asus keyboard may be getting a bit of an unfair rap ;-)
i recently downloaded thumb keyboard. Very customizable and makes it easy to type while holding the device in either orientation. ..

I love the asus keyboard. I've no issues with lag, only wished auto corrects is better. Like i just typed "ive" and it doesnt correct to "I've" and other simple things like pressing i doesn't auto correct to I.

I think that was one of the first changes I made to the device, get a better keyboard on.
thumb keyboard is pretty good and responsive.
I am so use to swype on my htc evo though.
Swype beta is open now with honeycomb support. For phone users there is an update as well.

Just installed it a few minutes ago. Works pretty good. Much easier to type since the tablet's screen is big so you can "Swype" more easily.
Reminder: Do not post any Swype apk files on XDA. It's not allowed.
That being said, the Beta is open again so join and you'll get accepted.
just ditched thumb keyboard for the time
I was already in the beta. When trying to install on TF it says this device is not android device. Thoughts?

Make sure your Transformer browser's user-agent is set to Tablet, not Desktop.
It's in the Browser settings under Advance.
Bingo. Thanks. I was using the dolphin browser so using stock did the trick
first impressions are great! Typing from swype now
Wow I love the small keyboard and that its moveable!!!!

It's pretty nice. Wish we could move the keyboard all around the screen instead of just on the bottom.

Wow, shows up one day after I broke down and bought Thumb Keyboard. Which, by the way, is only $0.99 from Amazon right now, so it isn't like I broke the bank.
The "shrink" button really makes a nice difference in usability IMO, but I'm still sticking with TK for now. The one-sided keyboard (with the blank space to hold the tablet) is really awesome IMO, and I find that I have really good typing speed on the split keyboard + auto correct.
Going back to tablet keyboard free.
The perfect tablet keyboard would be a split keyboard with swype input. Until that happens I will be using the thumb keyboard split just like on tablet keyboard free.
Loving this new swype
So much easier to use with one finger. Though I'll probably still use thumb keyboard when typing an email. And it seems there's a horrible lag when typing in the browser with swype...
i installed just a moment ago. Really lik swype. its what my transtormer was missing. The browser lag is still there but not as noticeable to me now. Glad this update waa released.
thanks. installed and long time swype user however the hc skin for tk split keyboard is still champ for now. i will remain testing to see if my opinion changes. thanks for posting.
Does anybody actually think the movable keyboard is a good idea? I'm loving Swype on HC, but don't see why anybody would want to put it in that "movable" mode. I could see it making sense if it didn't cover the entire bottom of the screen anyway, but it does. Maybe, I just don't get it....

Any idea how i can get the french installed?
Thanks
I have not been on the android wagon in awhile and I was wondering about different keyboards on the market. I really like our stock multi touch keyboard but the white theme is burning a hole in my retinas at night. Could somebody recommend a free/paid replacement? I also really like the island style buttons on the keyboard. No Skype please, I've already deleted it from the rom lol. Thanks all!
I love thumb keyboard

I like how the stock keyboard does not have a dedicated row for spelling corrections, just big old buttons on the screen.. If go keyboard does that then I'm game

Go keyboard does have it, but you wouldn't know from my screenshot cause I have it disabled. It's a highly customizable keyboard, you can even control the strength of the haptic feedback
Swiftkey
I use swift key because it has multiple theme colors and excellent predictive options. If you allow it gmail, text message, and/or facebook access it will learn how you type and make intelligent offers on what to type based your typing patterns. The other great thing is you can turn on arrows to move through what typed easier then trying to tap the proper place inside a word.

Personally, I use SlideIt - but thats like Swype
\\\\\\\\\ F i n g e r K e y b o a r d 2 ///////// is what I used to use back in the WinMo hacking days. I'm pretty upset no one ever released it on WP7 or Android.
I have just recently bought Thumb keyboard when trying to find a good split keyboard for the Tab Plus and I do have say say it is VERY nice.
The keyboard split is much easier on the thumbs for typing in Landscape mode. In between the two keypads are more keys and you also hold down a key and a numeric pad comes on top of the keyboard and goes away when you let it go. If some people have hands that are on the smaller side (like me) I highly recommend this keyboard it's so much more comfortable than the ones that come stock.
I will also note I did try SwiftKey Tablet X and I didn't like it as much. The landscape keys were slightly smaller and the portrait mode for had REALLY small keys and it only had 3 themes to play with.
Thumb Keyboard comes with 29 themes and the ability to adjust the size of the keyboard all on it's own (default being 100% and can go all the way to 100%) along with different layouts and optimized layouts for different tablet sizes (eg 7 inch, another 7 inch, 10.1 inch) and you can customize it to your liking.
My only gripe is the portrait mode keyboard is a little odd but not enough for me to completely dislike if anything it's easier to use.
In the end it is $2.29, but to me it was well worth it and should be given a try.
And I would put pictures of it up but I can't seem to screen cap the keyboard... :'(

Ah thank you! Now I can put up some pictures!
1. This is the landscape keyboard:
2. This is the landscape while holding the numeric button (which still can just be pressed) to bring up other functions and quick numeric pad:
3. This is the portrait mode. The pads are a little odd but it works for me. I could probably change it just haven't messed with it enough yet:
You can actually get a different portait layout so it doesn't look like that. I use this for my soft keyboard on my tablet as well and it's my favorite. It would get even better if they were to put a see-thru/transparency control. My peeve with soft keyboards is they usually take up so much screen space you can't see what you're typing. Making the keys transparent to a degree solves that.
I agree about being able to see through the keyboard. That would be an interesting feature to have and decently useful too.
And thanks for letting me know that I can change the portrait mode keyboard layout, but I might even end up change it back since I'm getting used to it.
tnx for sharing this out , well thumb keyboard has been out for like one year ! everybody knows its the best keyboard on the market specially for tabs , i have been using it with my Gtab7,Gtab7+ and the Gtab10.1, works the best for me from all.
Well still, I'm completely new to Android so this was a good find to me and needed to tell the world about it... Or at least people who actually care about Android...
Well I am trying it out as we speak. So far so good. Gonna take some getting used to though. Just have to play with the settings and what not. Nice on my 7+....
