Can't Fix Permissions...update recovery image, boot into recovery, ... etc.
Advanced optioned are checked in settings. I have Premium. But privileged commands and all that are coming up with errors.
Any advice?
You could try going into your superuser app and clearing its records for ROM Manager.
Maybe somehow it lost root privileges but still thinks it has them? If you clear out the record, the next time you do something that requires elevated privileges, it should request root again.
thank you.

I'm having a problem completing the upgrade to 2.2. I have a XT720 from Cincinnati Bell and was following the procedure from their website. I successfully did this upgrade on my XT720 and was upgrading my wife's phone. Everything was going the same as my phone until I got to "Install System Recovery". When it was pressed there was no prompt for super user access. It came back and said successful install and I pressed the OK. Then I pressed the "Recovery Reboot" and nothing happened.
After that happened I did a factory reset, using the settings>privacy>factory data reset menu , and tried again with the same result.
I'm sure this has something to do with not prompting for the superuser access. What might be happening?
Same happened to me first go around. There tutorial Os horrible. Revs is better. All I Did was restart And then I got the SU prompt. Use universal androot And root again If su isant in your app list. Universal androots is more convenent than super one click
Disconnect the phone from the PC before using the install option from the System Recovery app.

I cant remember, but I think I did do that one time. I think I went through the whole procedure 4 times.
Why do you think there was no prompt for the su access?

I searched for user rev or revs to see that tutorial but didn't find anyone. Is that short for something? Can you post the link to that tutorial? Thanks

Well tonight I gave it another try and I disconnected from the laptop before starting the recovery app. No joy! Here's what happened after following the CBW instructions and skipping the optional Titainium backup step.
1. Started System Recovery from the phone per pg 15 of the CBW instructions.
2. Pressed "Install Recovery System". I did not get a request for super user access but it did say install success and I pressed OK. Almost immediately after pressing OK I got the following error
"Activity System Recovery (in application System Recovery) is not responding. Force Close or Wait.
I pressed wait and nothing else happened.
3. I pressed "Recovery Boot" and after a short time got the above error again and I again pressed wait. Nothing ever happened.
This all worked fine on my phone!
Any Ideas?

I think you're not rooted. The System Recovery app always says install success even when it crashes and burns. Did you remember to turn on ADB (Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging) before rooting?
You can also try to root using UniversalAndroot 1.6.2-beta5 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747598
Another option is that you accidentally denied Superuser access. Open the Superuser app and see what's in the logs/deny lists.
Try running another app that requires root access (e.g. Titanium Backup). Do you get a popup asking about root access?
I just checked and it's still turn on. Does it matter if it's on or off while you're running the Recovery program?
Is there any advantage/disadvantage to using Androot?
Can you check to see if you're rooted?

I'll hook er' back up and install Titanium and see if it prompts me for su access. I'll let you know waht happens in a little bit.
When I use Superoneclick it never detects the software version and asks if I'm on 2.0 or higher. Is this some what normal? After i say yes it goes on it's way and seems to complete. It also did this on my phone and it upgraded without a hitch.
Well I installed Titanium Backup and it prompted for su access I clicked OK and it started up. On the main screen of Titanium it says:
Root access: OK (BusyBox 1.17.2 from system)
So I think I'm rooted??
Yes. You can try to uninstall the System Recovery app, reboot, & re-install it. Mod My Mobile has the Open Recovery files & manual installation instructions. Or maybe try copying the OpenRecovery.apk to the sd card & installing it with a file explorer (e.g. ES File Explorer or Astro from the market)
FINALLY!! YEAH!! I'm updated!!
I've watched some videos by reverandkjr and he wipes the Dalvik Cache and the Cache Partition. Should this be done??

Open your Superuser app and see if you've denied access or what the logs say.

Didn't CB's Froyo have a hidden SU? I can't remember I only ran it for a day or two before Wanhu's was brought to our attention.
Edit: Doh!! not if he hasn't flashed it yet.
I've got into Open Recovery and have already flashed to the 2.2 CBW image. Is there any benefit to wiping the Dalvik Cache and the Cache Partition like I've seen on reverandkjr videos.
I will wipe the Dalvik, cache & data/factory reset whenever I flash a new ROM
Okay, first off, I have searched. For the last 3 hours I have searched!!
I foolishly used Razorclaws one-button root method and it worked, However everything after that point has been an utter failure. I tried to flash recovery, and nothing. I tried using CWM, and nothing. I open Super User and it just closes. I don't know what else to do. Yes, I saw post 275 in the razorclaw thread, but when I put in the command list, it tells me it doesn't recognize the command. I previously had a Nook Color and had the easy adb installed. I don't know if this is my problem. I have a B70 transformer, I just want to unroot. I tried the Super User update fixer, nothing. The Transformer is running fine, I get force closes on some apps. I just want to return to stock. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
I unrooted it. But the superuser apk remains in the app drawer. Is there any harm that can be done by having it? I would like to 'successfully' root and flash a rom, but judging from my inability to flash recovery using the one-button method I will wait. I would love to overclock this beast!
You can delete this thread, I apologize for wasting time and resources!
have you tried rebooting and then re-rooting?
how did you unroot ?

To get rid of Super user app and binary

Also if you want to try again and get SU working you can try this

Thanks for the replies
I did not reboot and reroot, I did have to download the SDK in order to use the adb functions. I used the info provided by doaist to remove su permissions, I suppose. When I checked through the razorclaw app, and terminal. I was not given su access. So, I assumed I didn't have su permission.
And as soon as I try to get into the adb shell and type 'su' it says 'permission denied' , I don't know what else to do to remove it.
Thanks for your input guys, it means a lot.
Okay, so I redownloaded said apps, and I am now performing a backup. Which rom should I use? Which rom will allow me to retain stock functionality , and which OC kernal should I use. Is there a rom that has both?
When flashing recovery, does it go to the emmc or the extrernal sd???

External micro sd card
I somehow have managed to lose root access. I have superuser installed but the prompt to give root access to apps does not appear anymore.
I tried to do a factory reset, which was a huge mistake as I had changed the dpi and the launcher failed to start after reset. I tried rerooting using sparkym3s auto rooting tool, but no luck.
I now have the device somewhat operational again after installing apex launcher, but several apps show up as incompatible in the market that used to work before.
How can I regain root?
Factory reset clears the /data partition (you should've just renistalled the Superuser app, possibly a different version, or use and run SuperSU), where your installed apps and data are stored, so it will only delete the Superuser app for managing su access, but the su binary itself should remain on the /system partition. Check for it it /system/xbin/su
What's the problem with sparkym3's method anyway?
Thank you for replying.
After installing supersu it appears i have somewhat regained root access.
I can now change dpi with LCD Density Modder.
However, titanium backup, and several other apps dont get root access, and I dont get a prompt asking for access either.
Rootchecker shows that I dont have root access.
When I run the supersu app, it wants to update, i click ok, but i get error message "installation failed. There is nothing in the supersu log or apps tabs.
The su binary is in /system/xbin/su.
Should I un-root and then re-root perhaps?
I have messed around with this thing so much now, that I would prefer to wipe the entire storage and start completely fresh. Is this possible?
According to this topic I had rooted my infinity but now I did a wipe from boot (volume down + power on) so I lost all my apps including superuser app. My answer is: have I got root yet? Or have I lost only superuser app?

Try a few variants of what you've mentioned, if this doesn't help, you can try re-flashing firmware from the bootloader level.

Just install Superuser from the Playstore and see for yourself before asking You should have your root access back.
When apps request root privilege, their is no popup and I have to wait untill the app crash. However when I write su in the terminal it goes directly into root mode.
This is what happend to me after flashing : Fix_Tweaks-JB-Galaxysl-v1.zip (and wipe cache/ dalvik cache or no more root permissions).
E.g: I can't overclock my device since performance control crash when I change something(crash when normally root rights have to be claimed)
Is their something I can do to fix that? I already did a full reinstallation of the rom (wipe data etc.) but right after applying the fix I don't know what went wrong.
Thanks
PS: I'm on PACman v22.1 and had no root problems before applying this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41235327&postcount=51
Problem solved
I want to switch from supersu to superuser, and having an interesting problem that supersu somehow covered up. I have a Nexus 5x running the stock rom. With every months upgrade I would flash using fastboot, go into twrp recovery before first full boot and remove a bunch of unneeded applications in /system/app. When I would boot up those applications would be gone. Somehow this isn't the case with superuser. I can still go into recovery and remove them, but when I boot up all the applications are still in /system/app. If I go back into twrp they are still shown as being missing. I've tried installing es file explorer, but it's unable to delete the applications once the system is up. remounting /system doesn't work either. Any help?
Unrooting supersu caused all the applications to come back; so does supersu not really delete them either, but somehow prevents them from showing up following the recovery scheme or something?

You aren't doing something right or you don't have something setup correctly. With root, you should be able to unintelligible them completely.
When you removed them, did you wipe cache and dalvik/ART cache before rebooting? If not then the system probably still thinks they are there because they still have data loaded into cache.
I recommend sticking with SuperSU, superuser doesn't work as well as SuperSU

I've been googling a bit more. As it turns out there are two system partitions for nougat; in nexus 5x and some other devices apparently. This became more apparent when the file recovery-from-boot.p; which I rename in order to prevent recovery from being overwritten is not renamed when booting the OS. Nougat apparently pulls the system files from somewhere else. So whatever Chainfire did makes it boot the same partition as visible in recovery. Fully unrooting brings all those apps/system partition back. Haven't been able to find a good post that tells me how to to circumvent this without SuperSU; or exactly how this works.
