Ok, I was an early adopter of this phone bought it the day it came out July 18th. There are a great many things that disappoint me about this phone, main thing being lack of Froyo at the moment. I'm tired of waiting for samsung, I have little faith it will truely resolve my issues which are the following
In order to use wifi I must reboot my phone, this only occurred after the official JH7 was loaded on it through the over the air update that ATT did.
Constantly having lag all the time, and having apps running that I never ever use and dont want such as ATT Navigator, ATT Family Map, etc. I was able to root the phone and get rid of those but it really hasnt helped.
My stereo bluetooth headphones must be paired EVERY single time I want to use them, its not the headphones because they work perfectly with 4 other devices.
Of course the GPS, it sucks for everyone, any of these or all fix that? Samsung seems unwilling.
So maybe I'm wishing too much but I've watched almost every youtube review of the ROMs that are out there and theres a few details that stick out for things that I want in a rom so I'll detail them here and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction as to which one has the best combo.
1. froyo based, I need 2.2 for certain apps
2. I've heard theres different modems that can affect HSPA, I want fastest download and upload.
3. No wild color schemes, I dont like orange or green. I quite like the look of the phone I think samsung did a great job with the touchwiz and I know theres alot of you out there that perfer the "vanilla" versions of Android. I'm not one of those people. I really loved the look of the cognition rom and some of the things it had visually.
4. Overclocking would be nice but not at the expense of battery life, I'm right in the 24-30 hour range just as most are on here, better would be great if possible.
Go to romkitchen.org and build your own there. There are many threads about the advantages of one modem over another, and you can pick pretty much everything yourself. Then search for CLShortfuse's GPS fix and you'll be set.
Don't worry, its extremely easy

24-30 hours of what kind of use? There are a couple roms out there with stock appearance
Cognition
Perception
Precision
Andromeda

30 hours, you have to consider what you are asking. I want faster dl, no lag, better gps, but I don't want to eat any more battery. It is possible to get 30hrs of light to moderate use. Heavy use will yield 12-18
Andromeda v1.2 is a rom that is pretty vanilla....simple and has the things your looking for. You have to try roms that you think will be what you want.

+2 for Andromeda 1.2.
You can fix all of these if you root the phone. The best ROM out there is the Rom Kitchen (aka "Doc's ROMs") over at romkitchen.org. You can "cook up" your own ROMs using the specifications you want. This is what is so great about the ROM kitchen, especially when compared to the other ROMs like Cognition: you can pick what you want, and don't have to take whatever it was that someone else decided was best. For example, if you want the benefits of rooting but want to keep touchwiz, the ROM kitchen has an option for that. It also lets you pick things like the theme, boot animation, apps, etc. There are 5 captivate modems, and you might just have to experiment to see which one is best. I did this, and it was well worth it. The one that worked best for me was the XXJPP modem. Just load a seperate ROM with each of the different modems, flash each, and download a few things to see which is faster. Also check and see how well the GPS works on each.
Rooting will fix the lag, although one of the ROM kitchen kernels (Glitterball's Voodoo) will improve it even further. There is something called "Project Voodoo" which is a community of developers who build a kernel tweak called Voodoo which completely fixes the remaining lag issue (this is caused by the inefficient way the captivate organizes its folders), and also improves a few other features such as resolution.
You should go try out my ROM its small and fast and stable. I'm getting great battery life and DL/UL speeds. Give it a shot.
Here.
Well I decided to go with the serendipity 5.9, I love the speed, my upload and download speeds almost doubled, bluetooth and wifi finally work like they are supposed to!!
I do have a few complaints though, like the keyboard for texting, I loved the samsung one, I hate swipe any way i can get the stock one back on there?

However, if you're still interested in the Samsung keyboard, it's in here:

Holy crap what a difference. Everything actually works and is super fast. I would be on cloud nine right now except for the fact I'm probably soon getting the Atrix, this will def hold me over till then.
Im using Precision 3.5 with the monochrome 3.5 theme. Its running the latest suckerpunch kernel. For sure my favorite combo I've tried so far. Its really amazing, not to mention dev'd by ryude, who is one of the best!

Samsung Captivate running Serendipity 5.12 Paragon6 1200-100hz (uv'd and slightly oc'd) and I9000XXJVE modem. Almost have it edited/themed up how I want it. Need to get started on custom icons and I think I want to try my hand at a completely custom framework. Anyway, I was perfectly happy with 'dipity out of the box, but since I've flashed Paragon this phone is AMAZING. It's quite fast and the battery seems to last forever. Just now recharging for the first cycle after having to reflash my rom w/o a full battery, so after today I'll know for sure how long the battery last, but initially it seems like I'll get a day or so with my daughter constantly playing video's and games all day.

I wouldn't mind knowing either. I'm thinking it's a different launcher, but I'm only guessing. Still kinda new to android.
On my stock Cappy the GPS was only so-so. With Andromeda 1.2 it was awesome. Recently flashed to Cog 4.1 and while it was still better than stock, it was not as good as it was on Andromeda. I recently got a replacement phone from AT$T and decided to do some testing with it before I have to send one back. I have Andromeda on the phone on the left, Cog 4 on the phone on the right. I used two programs available for free from Market. The first is GPS Status, the second is GPS Test. Neother phone has a SIM card installed and wifi is turned off so that only the GPS is being used. Both phones have the exact same LBSTESTMODE settings and are using the same Google server and port.
Notice that Andromeda is not only faster at locking, but sees more satellites, holds them better, and gets a more accurate lock.

I'd really like to stay on Cog 4.1 since it is based on an actual Cappy Froyo ROM, but GPS performance is important to me. What could be different about Andromeda that it performs so much better?
Interesting, better than the multiple anecdotes (which does not equal data) that often floats around
I wonder what we would see if you swapped the roms on the phones??
I too was less than impressed with cog 4.1 gps. I tried Plumbbob's 0.93 fix from the develop forum and man what a difference.
Try it. It made a terrific difference. Follow the instructions explicitly and it should work for you.
Plumbbob knows what he's doing when it comes to gps.

I actually had Andromeda on the phone on the right before I flashed it to Cog 4.0 and 4.1. That's why I was disappointed when I switched because Andromeda had run so well on that phone. When the replacement phone came and I saw the same result I knew it wasn't phone specific and had everything to do with the ROM.
Try a comparison with stock froyo.

Good info., no good Cappy/bad Cappy variations then
Seems to be a lot of anecdotes where people are using one ROM yesterday, another today where a lot of GPS performance could just come down to stuff like weather conditions and satellite positions, so this back to back stuff is quite interesting.

My wife's Aria still beats my Cap in the GPS area on stock Froyo. Gets a lock quickly and often sees her at 10ft in less than 20 secs. There are times I'm lucky to have a lock at all It looks more and more like the Cap has bad GPS hardware.

Just had a stock eclair captivate due to warranty exchange. Had Cog4 on my previous unit. I had the really good performance that some see from a new stock eclair, but I knew it would degrade quickly like most say. So I put Cog 4.1 and Plumbbob's fix on and I found it to be of little help over my experience on a Cog 4 Cappy with a bad GPS. Going to try Andromeda and see if there's any improvement, and then I might go back to the stock Eclair build I backed up just before flashing Cog4.1 and see how long that quickness lasts.

Strange... You did the settings right in lbs test mode?
You can flash adams fix, should put it back. Cog 4.1 incorporated adams gps fix.
i was running phoenix 5.2 for a while and i seemed to get a 10m lock in a few seconds, regardless of my location
I'm back on Andromeda 1.2. Just couldn't live with the mediocre GPS performance with Cog 4.x. I wish DG would figure out how Andromeda is doing so well with the same hardware. That would get me back on Cog 4.x for sure.
When I had the ATT stock I got the lock in seconds. After flashing and putting different ROM its like 5-10 min.
Is there a difference in the gps.conf or anything else?

The one I am on (Android Revolution 5.1.8) and GingerBeast (2.1.2) I had before this, I generally got lock in seconds, and with an accuracy of 5-10m.
I would say the GPS on sense based roms with the correct gps.conf file works just as good as the stock rom.
Right now I'm using Android Revolution 5.1.9 and I get almost instant lock (about 5 secs) and 5~7m error.
Radio and RIL also play a very large part in it as well, I have had great luck leaving the gps.conf file as is and just flashing the updated stock radio/RIL combo. Locks in seconds unless obstructed.
This also includes CM7 Nightlies after 57ish.

Running Leedroid and getting lock in seconds down to 10 foot accuracy! Best I've had in any configuration. Running latest stock radio.
Running leedroid and my GPS is rock sold. While driving @70mph I get 10/10 in less then 10 seconds. New radio and ril.

Works fine for me on cm 7. I don't turn it off and on. With gingerbread its really not necessary in aosp type roms it only activates when needed the power drain is minimal.
funny, i just flashed back to the stock rooted rom with sideloading (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058042) because I've realized I had ZERO dropped calls or connection issues on the stock rom. i was using ar4g 3.7 anyways because I found it to be the most stable and quite quick. wish it had a custom kernel.
back to the point, I had issues getting GPS working on that too, even with matching ril and radio. hopefully I won't have any more issues with this rom
For myself, it was much better when I was on stock rom, but since I love testing out new roms, I've learned to live with it... At least it'll still work most of the time.

I think stock GPS SUCKSSSSS!
Dang I was just playing with this guz I'm kinda a GPS freak, and this Inspire, if one thing sucks, it's the GPS. Forver to get locks, and closest accuracy radius ever achieved is 7 meters....any suggestions? GPSFix, GPS Essentials doesn't seem to help. Ugh...guz me likes me my accurate GPS on my phone thingy....I was hoping that when I root it would improve but this feature probably doesn't get a whole lot of attention form the devs (?)
Edit: It is marginally better than the aged iPhone 3G I had, but I took it apart when it almost dead (I kilt it off by some wild ass idea I was going to refurb it) and there were signs of oxidation around the GPS antenna, which makes sense because my perception was that the performance degraded over time.
Good morning guys,
I've tried every 'fix' under the sun to make my GPS work 'better' (takes 5 minutes to lock my loc), but to no avail.
(I'm on Scott's amazing CM10 JB rom)
Is every JB rom having these issues? Would it be better to just goto ICS?
I travel for work, so Maps is my best friend lol
Thanks in advance,

Scotts latest CM10 initial locked for me in 1 minute 24 seconds.
So, GPS isn't broken across the board. Sometimes there are issues, and sometimes it works fine, but by and large, the issues are local to the individual user.
If GPS is that important, I would suggest that you go back to stock and work your way up. Or just stick with stock.
Understand a solution is important, however not a good idea to create duplicate threads.

use cm9. every jb rom on this phone has issues with agps. weird thing is it is running but not helping to find sats. with gps.conf mods even the "use ref loc" feature seems to work which is network triangulation to help it figure out a rough location for a starting point but the phone still seems to use the standalone gps to find sats.... i tried logging it but nothing really gave me a clue to the actual problem. the gps isn't broken but it doesn't work so well for most of us without agps working to it's full potential.
It works well in ICS. Currently running cm and GPS locks in less than a minute.
In jb it would take 20+ minutes and sometimes say I was a mile away.
GPS has always been bad as far as I'm concerned. I've actually had better luck with the JB roms from late August onward than I have with Froyo or Gingerbread. Have you actually been able to rely on GPS for directions with this phone? I always end up having to ask at a gas station!

Turn off Google location. It might be nice to have Google now but its the worst for navigation. You need real GPS location for maps. Problem is that with jb agps doesn't work correctly so the GPS lock takes forever, leave GPS on with the screen on for another 15 minutes after the first loc for the ephemeris data to download. that should last a few days before you have to do it again.
ICS on the other hand has absolutely impeccable GPS performance for me. Much better than what came from Samsung on my phone.
Cypher rom
I used Cypher rom, and it has great GPS lock.

first of all, i appreciate that GPS works fine for some people -- why are you reading this thread then?
i'm not even going to list everything i've done to troubleshoot, but before you say 'people posting things and not checking it out themselves' i can tell you that i have tried EVERYTHING, spent hours working on the GPS issue with my phone and come to the conclusion that JB does not have proper GPS on SOME infuse phones, whether it be by region or some latent hardware defect that the ICS or GB roms compensate for, my GPS dosen't lock. i've been through like 20 gps.conf files, read about every setting in the file and tried every variation thereof, gone back to GB, gone to ICS, back to JB, multiple times, testing the result, my phone locks in 5 seconds in ICS or GB, not in JB. had same results in cm10, cypher, remICS, th3bills aokp, his miui, etc...
if my hardware was bad, i wouldnt lock in 5 seconds in GB.
one of my pet peeves is everytime you ask a question in a forum being told you're in the wrong thread when it would have taken less time to provide a helpful answer. posts telling people to move to another forum are also noise, and then further posts telling people they didn't try hard enough, or 'mine works so you're wrong' are also just noise, and not helpful to anyone. the other pet peeve is being told, after spending hours working on an issue, to stop whining because it's being worked on, when you were just trying to help in the first place. or when you read the first sentence of my post and tell me to do something i clearly stated i had already tried in my post.
nobody is whining, we just use infuse phones, and like our GPS to work.
also to be clear this isnt really directed at atrix4nag in a negative way, i just happened to reply to his message.
The GPS takes 5 minutes to lock, and it does it at 1600 meters (un)accuracy.
It behaves like this no matter what rom i try (Sky, Slim, CM9/10, Embryo etc), except for stock Rogers ICS.
The agps patch and other gps patches on XDA didn't do anything.
When i first bought it, it had stock Rogers ICS and GPS worked perfectly, never mind the fact that i live in EU.
Then i tried custom roms and it started to funk around and has been doing as long as i run a custom rom.
Today i installed Rogers ICS as a last resort and suddenly the GPS locks in seconds and with great accuracy too (9 meters).
And so the question, what the hell is causing this?
OR
How do i make the GPS work with the custom roms?
I have been running custom ROM's since a day after I got my Skyrocket, and the AGPS patch has never failed to work for me. I have been running CM10 for pretty much the last 4+ months, and GPS always works. Not sure what your issue might be.

I'm not sure either.. The phone is canadian with a Rogers brand on battery cover. When i install a stock AT&T rom the GPS more or less dies.
Any other rom and the GPS dies. Stock Rogers ICS rom and voila works like a clockwork.
And it doesn't react at all to any GPS patch, and i've tried like 10 different ones. aGPS is not new to me, i've successfully used it on other phones. But for some reason it doesn't do anything for my Skyrocket.

Thanks i'll try that, just don't see how Aroma is going to help if it's the same patch i've tried earlier.
On the other hand, with ghouly issues like this who knows what might help and what won't ?
Worst case scenario is that i'll be stuck with Rogers FW if i want working GPS, which is acceptable with some tweaks especially the Droid Razr M launcher

Nope, it's always turned on.
If SW doesn't solve/change anything - where might the problem be? Yes, that's right, it's probably in HW!
Check your GPS antenna contacts (antenna is inside the inner plastic, the one you see when you open back cover and remove the battery). Bend them a bit and clean their contact points to make sure they contact well.
If your phone is still within warranty or the above doesn't help - replace it.

Hi Jack_R1
Software does indeed solve everything. In short: stock rogers ics rom = perfect gps, custom rom/stock at&t rom= no gps.
Oops. Guess I skipped some lines reading the OP - returned and found your line talking about it. Sorry about that.
Did you try reinstalling custom ROMs after you got quick lock on stock ROM, to test that the issue remains?
I'd suggest a couple of things:
1. Try installing AT&T ICS ROM for testing. If it also gives you a good lock - you'll have better reference point.
2. Look at the APN you use in Rogers' ROM and in other ROMs. If you're using automatic ones - they might be different and include GPS-related stuff (type "supl").
3. Copy stock gps.conf from Rojers and try using it on custom ROMs.
4. Download FasterFix and try choosing different NTP pools.
5. Download GPS Status & Toolbox, see what exactly happens when you run it, describe here. What satellites are you seeing (numbers), how much time after running it, in which condition, etc.

1 The AT&T roms didn't give me an adequate lock, until the JB updates were leaked & released.
2 I'm always using automatic APN's but they don't have any GPS info.
Haven't tried #3..
4 FasterFix didn't help.
5 GPS Status shows 4-7 satellites and only 2-3 locks with horrible accuracy. The thing is now i get perfect locks with any ROMs.. I could've disallowed Google Services to use GPS as I might've confused it with Google Search & Ads wanting my location..
Thanks for your help :good:
