Do I need to root the g tablet first? - G Tablet General

Will I need to run a root util first before I can install the clockworks mod?
If yes, where can I find it?
Any info is a plus ...
UPDATE: Issue resolved ... I was pressing the pwr button first then the
+ volume button ... I feel stupid ....

Nope, you don't need to. Just flash Clockword Mod, then flash ZPad or TNT Lite, and your G Tab will be rooted for you.

Not sure if I understand the problem.
There is a link on this thread from robeet about Clockwork
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842004
Just download the zip file
Open the zip there are two files
update.zip
recover (folder)
plug your tab into your PC and mount the USB
Upload both of those to your internal (sdcard)
shutdown your tab
Hold volume up then power, it will reboot into recovery and pick up the update.zip file automatically and you will have clockwork installed.
You can then when booting do the same thing with volume up and power to get the Clockwork screen with all the recovery goodness.

Issue is resolved and I've added clockworks. I just added tnt lite
2.20. I was pressing the keys in the wrong order. Boy .. do I feel
dumb ...
Also, thanks for the help. The g-tablet runs much quicker and I'm
going to install a apps and flash next ...

[DEV] 09/June v1.8.1.6 - fake-flash by Koush, launching recovery without a PC

This morning, Koush and I have been working on / stumbling through getting recovery running on a Desire without using a PC for devices rooted with a test image. The same technique also applies to the Legend. Presenting...
fake-flash!
Fake-flash using a similar concept to the original root method, it launches a recovery image from the test image recovery, but instead of pushing the files from a PC, the files are extracted from an update.zip on the SD card. Here's how it works...
This is Recovery ROM which eliminates the need to have a PC to initiate Custom ROM loading process. Currently on a Rooted "Desire": you will need to put your phone in Recovery Mode (Power up phone while pressing Volume Down Key, then Select Recovery Option) and then Run a Batch file (eg. Recovery-windows.bat) from PC while phone is connected via USB Cable. This will put the phone on Customer ROM recovery/Loading Mode. Please check Paul's excellent methods found on MoDaCo. ClockWork eliminates this requirement of PC/Laptop.
If you have/Downloaded ClockWork ROM (Latest is 2.0.1.4), you can always copy this on you SD Card as "update.zip". While in Standard Recovery Mode (Power up phone while pressing Volume Down Key, then Select Recovery Option) Press "Up" Volume Key and Power Button. You will get Standard Android Recovery Menu. Load the update.zip. Once you do this ClockWork will show you the Custom Rom Loading Menus. From there you could load Any Customer ROM stored on your SD Card.
However, to make this simple, you should use ROM Manager Application which integrates everything together. With ROM Manager you could Select Custom ROM while the Phone is Running normally and Install them easily. To download ROM Manager and ClockWork ROM for different phones directly check:
http://www.koushikdutta.com/2010/02/clockwork-recovery-image.html
Preperation
Download the fake-flash update zip from one of the links below
Copy the update.zip to the root of your SD card (the name MUST remain as update.zip)
When you want to launch the recovery image
Turn on your device with 'volume down' pressed and select 'Recovery'
When the exclamation mark appears, press and hold 'volume up' then press 'power'
Select the second option, 'Apply sdcard:update.zip
That's it, ClockworkMod recovery should launch!
Neat eh?
DOWNLOADS
Just to caveat this initial release, we've yet to carry out extensive testing and you are constrained somewhat by the limitations of the stock kernel (e.g. no support for EXT4).
That's it for now... enjoy... i'll update this post as further advances are made. If you'd like to support Koush's work, consider buying 'ROM Manager Premium' from the Android Market.

what the...?
awesome, guys!!!
does it work with all bootloader- versions?
Edit: works like a charm with hboot80!
That is amazing!
awesome!!!! i love xda and you guys always making my day
Does this solve the USB brick issue? Would be legend if it did!!!
Excellent work tho - now can flash whilst waiting on the train
Working Great, thx alot
confirmed works great!
does nandroid backup & restore work from this recovery ?
tried nandroid backup but fails on md5 checksum? some error regarding partitions?- hopefully checksum not needed and should still be able to restore?
great work to all
This is great!
Seems to work fine. Successfully flashed a different kernel using this. Only thing I found so far, if mounting usb, dropping a .zip onto the SD, then going back to flash, it haven't updated the SD-card file list, i.e. can't find the new file. Not exactly a major problem though. For first-timers it would be great with some explanation as to what keys to use, and that the "back"-key in fact goes back in the menu structure.
Mac
is it possible to make an SD-ext backup?
I just tried the nandroid backup,
but it said that it couldn't find /dev/block/mmcblk0p2...
great work!
Also got the md5 checksum error on nandroid backup here, fyi: my sdcard is a single fat32 partition if that makes any difference

dudes! great stuff, works perfectly! thank you!
Wow!!! thnx for this i rly hate the fact that i need to push files from my pc to the phone ;-)

got my gtablet finally for xmas

So got my g tablet for christmas and as you have known i've been following this forum for a few weeks getting myself ready for this tablet it updated to the newest UI and now i cant seem to get clockwork installed on it, I tried even rooting it first with the z4root and still having issues with loading clockwork on it, i downloaded version that was recommended in the forum 8 and than extracted the files to the root of the sd card and now when i power it down and back up and press the power and the volume up button it goes to the typical box with the arrow in it coming out and than just boots up never loads up clockwork on the device.
the other issue im having is getting the market going the market fix is supposed to be to stop the market from running and the google services but when i go to settings and applications theres no manage application section in the new update to 3889 or whatever the version is, right now im running launcher pro so i got the vanilla android look just need the market working and to get the tnt lite or the vegan installed on it and obviously cant without clockwork, i've tried searching today and remember all the threads i've read before and for some reason i still cant seem to figure out what the issue is. i thought it would be as easy as rooting my droid but i guess i was wrong.
thanks for any advice you can offer up, other than not getting what i want to load on it so far its pretty damn good other than missing the market other than this gmarket that comes with it and not having a custom rom running yet.

Check this link for adding to stock
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=885940
or juct check the Vegan thread or tnt lite thread
To get clockwork working I put it my micro SD card. There's a thread in the dev section for installing clockwork, and an old version of tnt lite. I followed those and they worked perfectly.
If you are still having problems getting CWM to install, in your menu, security, do a factory reset then try reinstalling CWM. I have had to do this when I can't get it to install, then for some reason it installs like it should.
Thanks guys for all your help i did finally get it loaded late xmas night very happy using the vegan rom. will give tnt lite a shot maybe in a few weeks. but so far loving my tablet def appreciate all the work you guys have put into these roms to make our tablet the best it can be

problems with tnt

I was going to upgrade to the 4.0 and by mistake I erase the file that say update zip from the tablet since that I only get a message that says android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly and i cant go to settings or nothing everytime I do something it just pop up and said force close.

You can install Clockwork from an external sdcard. You just need to put the update.zip, and the recovery folder on the sdcard. Make sure there is a file inside the recovery folder named command. You will likely need to open the command file with a text editor and make sure it has sdcard2 listed instead of sdcard. The command file will not have an extension. If you get all of that then put the sdcard in your tablet, hold the vol+ button while pressing the power button. If all goes well clockwork will be installed.
You can get into clockwork the same way. Vol+, and then press power. Once in clockwork do the first 2 items that say wipe in the names. Then reboot and with any luck your tablet will work..
ok this is what I did and make it worst.I download the 3.1 tnt update and did the flashing and it show me the box with the arrow telling me that it was doing it but when it finish it get stock on the x with the colors going on and off with the flashing colors and after like 5 of those it just turn off.

Do what I wrote in the post above yours. Flashing a TnT rom without clearing the data is not going to make it better. And you need Clockwork to clear the data.
x2 and it sounds likt you need to repartition your sdcard now if your boot looping
nothing Ive done it like 5 times and dont do anything just go to the loop and turns off
If you are booting your tablet using the power/vol + and you are getting the box with the green arrow then clockwork recovery is not installed. You have to have clockwork recovery installed

Rooting and Flashing a custom ROM

I flashed the leaked froyo firmware I897UCJI6 on my samsung captivate using odin 1-click method. I have a working 2.2 now. My phone is not rooted. I am planning to flash a custom ROM and try other custom ROMs out there in the market. I've gone through a three part video series by mobiletechvideos on how to root and flash a custom ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364). But, i still have a few questions.
1. For rooting, do i need to flash the phone back to the stock JF6?
2. In the xda link given above, i am fine until step #4. Step #5 is a little bit confusing to me. After i copy the root file to the root directory in the internal sd card on my phone, i rename it to update.zip. Also, i copy the clockworkrecovery to the root directory in the internal sd card in the phone and rename it to update.zip. Now, after i am doing with rooting and clockworkrecovery, i have to proceed further to flash the custom ROM. Now, the steps mentioned in the xda forum does not say anything about moving the custom ROM file to the root directory in the internal sd card on the phone. My question is: Do i need to copy the custom ROM zip file into the root directory of the phone? Do i need to rename the custome ROM file to update.zip as well?
Someone please help.
Yes rom goes on sd, no do not rename
If you are on ji6 you will not be able to install clockwork because of 3e recovery. Two option, flash back to stock using

One click odin, provided you are at&t and build number is 1009 and lower located under battery

Thanks for the reply. What is 3e recovery by the way? I am able to flash back to stock (jf6) using odin 1-click by following the volume up + down method to download. My build number is not in that 1000 series. Are you referring to s/n number found under the battery? In many threads I have seen ppl saying if u r under 1009 build # then you need to use 3 key combo method. You are saying the opposite. I am confused now. Sorry sir but I think I need.more explanation. I thank you for your time

If you can get into dl mode issuing volume and usb then you have three button combo. Later builds can not use jf6 stock 1010 and up. Your build had to be there, and I do not think it its possible it is not in the 1000s if you have a captivate

WOW! I clicked on the xda link from my phone and the update.zip got downloaded into the download folder in my internal sd (i deleted it). I see the point now. I need to root only to back up all apps and system data such as contacts, sms, media etc. Otherwise, no need to root. Please conform the steps one last time if you don't mind:
1. Copy the update.zip into the root directory of my phone (how to get to the root directory, by the way! Sorry it is a dumb question). Also, copy the custom ROM zip file to the same root directory.
2. Using 3 button combo, follow the remaining steps.
Now, after I successfully flash the custom ROM, can I use the android market and install all the apps I use.

When you open my files app you are looking at the root of your sd. You will see your download folder, go to it long press either file select move phone will direct you to root if sd, select paste.
You are correct you need root to run programs like titanium backup to backup your apps, but when you flash stock they will all be gone either way. So unless you are rooted now you can not back up your apps. You can dl them again do not restore any system data just user apps. Backup contacts by exporting to ext sd, or sim
I am checking out so I won't be responding again for the night. Good luck
The simplest way there is to root/ flash a rom is to use a one click root program.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739304
If you use this, it roots your phone for you. After you root with the program in the link above( there are videos on how to use the program if you get confused ) Download Rom Manager from the market. open up rom manager and select flash clockwork mod recovery. After that in the program rom manager click reboot into recovery( easier than holding volume buttons) the stock recovery will pop up when the phone reboots. Click reinstall packages. It will bring you back to the stock recovery, click reinstall packages for a second time and you will have cwm (clock work mod ) recovery. In clockwork mod recovery there is an option to back up your phone. do this before you flash a rom. after you back up turn your phone on. Make sure it is in usb debugging. connect to your computer and on your phone select mount sd. drag the downloaded rom .zip file into the sd. the root of you phone is just what ever drive your phone shows up as. unplug your phone reboot into recovery and in cwm recovery there is an option to factory wipe, do this and after it is done, click the option install zip. then choose zip from sd. highlight the rom . zip file you are flashing and select it. it will take a minute or too and when it is done just reboot the phone. First boot will take a while but once it boots your all set. any questions you can pm me and good luck.

Thank you. I have your toolbox program installed in my computer running 64 bit windows 7 home.premium edition. I have a few questions. My phone is running the leaked JI6 2.2 rightnow. What should I choose first from the toolbox? If I choose, flash to stock then do I need to select thw JF6 firmware file from somewhere or the tool itself will do the job? Sameway, if I click root, then do I need to select a root / clockwork files to finish rooting or again the tool itself will do the job? I understand for flashing the custom ROM I need to choose the the ROM .zip file. I watched the video about your program on mobiletechvideos on youtube. I was on WW 8.2.3.13 and updated to US 3.1. Now im having some problems with it. Been freezing and stuff.
So.. is it possible in anyway to go back to ww version so i can get th OTA version when it comes?

what i had to do was download the 8239 update from asus put it in microsd/asus/update then i hade to rename the file to ww_epad-user-8.4.4.5.zip. you should see update avaliable in the bottom right hand corner of the taskbar then select update. Then ur tf should do the rest itself.
Worked great! thanx =)
I tried this, it isnt offering me an update, no exclamation mark either

Ok, place the zip file on microsd card. Then turn the transformer off.
Hold power and volume down until it boots up and you see the small text.
Now hurry and press volume upp right away. That seem to force it to start the firmware. I used the ww epad 8.2.3.13.
I dont know if its ok when your rooted tho..

Hello,
It doesn't work for me, is there any other thing to do ?
What i've done :
1) Make a folder called ASUS/Update from the root of your microSD card
2) Drop the .zip in there, rename to 'US_epad-user-8.4.4.5.zip'
3) If you're doing this on the Transformer itself, eject and remount the SD card. If on your PC, just plug the card in.
4) Click the update notification, it'll start the updater on it's own.
Got the notification, started it but got the warning when reboot itself in recovery, no update.

Hi, i didnt do that. Just booted with power and volume down. Then as soon as the small text appear on left side i pressed volume up. That way it flashes it right away.
Ok, someone on a french forum find the solution that worked for me !
Download the last WW update on the Asus Website
Open the .zip file, in the ASUS/Update folder there will be another .zip file
Rename it EP101_SDUPDATE.zip and put it to the root of your external microSDcard
Boot in recovery (volume down and power) and then press volume up when it's asked in the upper left corner.
Let the update apply.
Once it boot, power off your tab, boot again in recovery, wait to have the wipe menu, confirme to wipe your device, let it wipe and reboot and that's ok !

Sounds like you were using the wrong .zip file to begin with. There were a few going around. One was a zip with a zip in it, which you need to do what you did, another simply was that inner zip file. If you named the inner zip to US_epad-user-8.4.4.5.zip and followed the directions as posted previously it probably would've worked as well. Just looks like you had one copy of the zip and the instructions for the other
Was on TW_epad_user_8239 and updated to the leak 3.1 with US firmware.
managed to downgrade (all the way back to TW_epad_user_82313) and TF auto prompt me upgrade to TW_epad_user_8239 (with numerous reset)
However, there are many android.process* crashes...
