Main disadvantages of running Froyo leaked over Eclair? - Captivate General

I tried Cog and didn't like it and so now I'm back on the leaked ODIN one click Froyo
What are the main disadvantages of running this build versus Eclair?

There was an issues thread in the dev section when JI6 came out (that is the first leaked beta). it is stable, but had issues with email forwarding and replying not including the original email. There were other issues as well - I think BT sound was one of the big ones; and sound from wired headsets not working during a call.

There aren't any real disadvantages per say. You will lose the ability to update to Froyo when it is eventually released, but if you are like the rest of us on hear who the hell cares? That is why we love our devs bc they take that released Froyo, rip it apart and put it back together in a way that is so much better than the original. Other than that just read through the threads. Axura is the best ROM in my opinion. I have seriously tried them all and it is the fastest, smoothest and most appealing. Everything works on it as well. Even GPS if you have a later model phone.

[Q] Experiences with the Rogers Canada Captivate?

Hey all, first post here. Currently I'm interested in the Rogers Galaxy S Captivate (seem to be a million different versions of the galaxy which is quite confusing). Beyond a few basic reviews/unboxings I can't really find much information on this phone. Without doing a long drawn out post I'll cut to my questions quick (I apologize if I'm posting this in the wrong forum and the noobish questions):
- What are peoples general experiences with this phone? Loves and hates?
- Froyo support, is there an official Froyo build from rogers or is it limited to 3rd party ROMs etc?
- When it comes to 3rd party ROMs etc, just how mod-able is this phone?
- Is WiFi tethering possible/available with a 3rd party ROM?
Thanks ahead of time.
1) random shutdown issue with one of my phones. GPS problem with second. Third was fine (GPS/no shutdowns) but the build is "creaky". GPS is really fast and accurate and no problems. Battery lasts decent, depends how much you have the screen on for. Right now I can last 4 hours on idle with wifi/3G on and lose maybe 1%. Of course, nothing is really going on.
2-4 No clue yet. Haven't flashed. Kind of waiting for Froyo release from Rogers.
bought a captivate directly from rogers the day it came out off-contract. GPS worked perfectly, even weeks after, navigation and all still locked fast and accurately. However, as far as I am concerned, the 2.2 froyo release by rogers is still not out..so i rooted the phone through download mode with a .zip (took 5 seconds), and since then, have flashed every rom you could imagine. All running great, the phone has restart once..randomly, but other then that, battery life and all has been super good. Haven't had any problems, so i'd say it's pretty good if you have any more specific questions, feel free to ask. and btw, wifi tethering is possible, at least with froyo on any of the main 3rd party roms.
Wifi tethering was in stock rom just so you know. Go into wifi settings
I think you should be okay since you're getting it much later than most other people... I think I'm included as well. I had the shutdown problem but a factory reset fixed it, so I think it was just a software issue on my end. GPS is still spotty, works great and accurately but sometimes doesn't. I also have the slight problem with search popping up randomly, but I am not too bothered by that.
Otherwise it's fine, I love this phone. Everyone is so intrigued when I pull it out.

In general, the phone is really quite good. The Rogers stock GPS doesn't have the issues that the AT&T GPS appears to have, but the modem is HSDPA not HSUPA so upload speed is limited to around 300-400 Kbps and download is limited to around 5Mbps max). Rogers also don't put on a load of bloatware which is really quite nice. Stock Rogers phone even comes with tethering enabled (USB or WiFi using MyAP). With my phone I can't really say I had any "Hates"..a few minor annoyances, such as
- the contact groups (in stock) never syncs the Google Groups
- the calendar app has no "conference call" option, I had this on my OpenEtna phone

No official Froyo support as yet. Rogers saying early 2011. Froyo is only available in custom ROMs based on a leaked ROM and now also based on the GT-i9000 (e.g. Galaxy S "Vibrant" from Bell...as well as some stuff from the Telus "Fascinate" too), as there are official Froyo builds for that (which are not without their own problems too).

Very easy, particularly from rogers as they have not prevented you from loading software in any way, so you can simply download z4root or oclf or the like, directly to your phone from it's browser and run it locally to root your phone. There are a few ways to install the ROMs but they are mostly detailed in their own announcement threads and pretty much cover the bases. There is also a ROM installer HowTo in the QnA or Question section of the Samsung Captivate forum.

All of the ROMs that the Chefs put out are really quite good. It mostly comes dow to a personal preference. One thing to be aware of is the ROM limitations. These are usually listed in their announce thread too:
Note that if you want HSUPA (up to 5.6 Mbps up/7.4 Mbps down) then you need one of the i9000 based modems. You can often put different modems from different ROMs into your own phone, but there are some limitations. The modem should come from the same build (e.g. don't put a 2.1 modem in a 2.2 ROM), some modems are HSDPA only (e.g. the Rogers and AT&T based ones) and that the modem bin is used for more than modem processing, it appears to be used in DSP so it affects that voice call handling. With some modems as a result, you may not be heard on a voice call..so test. It's not to big a deal as you can easily swap out a modem for another.
Cogntion and Perception are ROMs both by DesignGears. I liked them both but couldn't get the combination of features I wanted (which they NOW have) and I couldn't get hold of DesignGears to provide me with his set-up for compiling the kernal (one of the few chefs that compiles his own kernels...most use kernels from other people). To my thinking Perception is more "active" than Cognition leading to cognition being (considered by some) more stable...but it's just a matter of preference. I think that Cognition is not capable of HSUPA but Perception is...though withough checking I may have that the wrong way around.
Axura 2.5 is what I am currently running, though there will be no more development on the "old" Axura because AdamHolden, the latest Axura chef received too many negative comments for his liking and quit. He is starting a new ROM with a team rather than as an individual (see here).
I hear good comments about Assonance, but haven't tried it since using Axura as it fit all my needs.
There are also many others. Just take a browse through the "Captivate Android Development" forum and you will see a number of [ROM] threads. Take a quick read of atleast the first 3-4 posts on the thread as those are used to identify the current version, features, state and issues.

I love my SGS. Feels very snappy with some tweaking and a different launcher, battery life is 24-48 hours with average usage (again with some settings tweaks). No GPS or Shutdown issues on my side and I bought the phone when it was first available. A few people at my work have the phone and I've heard no issues with it at all. One tiny issue I have seen is that some texts seem to come in with an incorrect time stamp. They seem to be about 5 hours off. This can be easily fixed with a simple app so I don't even think about it anymore.

As has been mentioned before, no Froyo yet but that's pretty standard for Rogers. On the plus side there is a Gingerbread ROM being made which looks very sexy in the I9000 forums by supercurio and others.

I rooted my phone in a matter of minutes with z4 root, very simple, one click. I have tried to lag fix my device using oclf but it failed. I know it's not the phone though since a friend of mine has the same phone and his works great. If you like quadrant stats, he's right up there. I personally haven't used any ROM's yet but I will be in the near future. From what I can see there are a lot of ROM's available and it seems like a pretty simple process.

Haven't bothered, I don't need it so I don't know.
I definitely recommend this phone
No issues for a (relatively) simple user that just wants froyo. Love how un-branded rogers left this phone compared to my SE dumbphones and whatnot.
Never tried thethering (as i have no idea how much data i have left)
GPS Test gets a lock within 15 or so seconds with 50ft accuracy (lowers down to around 30 after a bit)
I think i had one of the newer batches (purchased from corporate - early December)
Thanks a lot for the replies all! Looks like i'll be hopping one the Captivate wagon pretty soon.
nevermind, my mistake.
The Captivate is amazing with Rogers, my wife and I both have one and they are fast, solid build, and just a joy to use.
If you want to see a video of mine, just search on youtube "gunstar1981"
Its a really great phone, hope you get yours soon!

Froyo Tomorrow

Just got a tweet from GalaxySSupport saying that the Captivate will be getting Froyo tomorrow. Think I will stick with my custom rom.
Sent from my Samsung Captivate
I'll upgrade my wife's and see how that goes before I go back to stock.
I honestly don't know why you'd stick with your custom, it does not have the official source for our phone, just a well hacked up version from other phones. i don't have a computer so I can't flash very often. I've done it once, but from what I read, everyone seems to be happy with what the devs have been able to do with a makeshift source. btw this is my first post, but i've been reading for about 4 months. lol
I should clarify. I'm going to stick with roms like Phoenix or others, and update to a Rom that will be based off official source. I don't want to lose things like Mobile AP (for free at least) and the lag fixes. I might try the official release down the road, but I doubt I will stay with it.

I've been sticking with stock because I've been reading alot of issues with bluetooth headset. Unfortunately I use that with my car (built-in bluetooth) and I really like that so I'd rather not lose it...

It works fine in some ROMS. ie Ryude Precision 3.5. I haven't tested BT dialing on my current ROM, but everything else with BT is working fine on Cognition 4.0. Just an FYI
BT dialing works fine for me on Andromeda 1.2.
ill flash back to stock, than back to custom cus i know the devs will come out with something farrrrr more b!tchen
That is awesome. Cool thing is, though, we should be seeing CM7 for the Cappy next week. We'll be on 2.3 while everyone else just updated to 2.2.

Supernova confirmed working with BT in car.
Several 2.2.1 roms will also enable bluetooth dialing from a headset which you can't do from stock.
I waited waited and waited until last sunday when I flashed serendipity on my captivate. Looking at the speed, UI and performance I will wait to see if the official froyo is any better (i doubt it). If it is impressive then I will flash back to stock (JF6) and update to froyo through kies mini but not happening tomorrow

Does this mean source has been put out too? I thought GB/CM7 isnt possible until that comes out? The official release just means more Samsung based ROMS if im not mistaken

I've been using Preception 10.3 and it works fine with my bluetooth. They announced they would not be continuing development on Perception but I like what i have. I'll keep it until the Devs cook up something after they get the official source.
it's probably the same froyo that congnition 4 is based on...and with the lagfix on, and the really awesome roms and kernels available here...i m sure the stock froyo would suck!!!
and btw it wont be long before at&t and samsung pull down the froyo page cause of "bug fixes"..aha

Nevermind the bloat and stock Samsung look, both suck in comparison to the work that some of the devs have done on this forum. It would be downgrading to go to stock 2.2 from a custom 2.2.1 ROM. Lol and like previous post who know knows how long ATT will actually have an Official release out before it starts bricking phones...

Who here refuses to flash ATT 2.2?

I'm actually surprised so many flashed ATT 2.2.
So who is still sticking to our awesome dev creations while awaiting a KB1 cooked rom (from source)?
Supernova here and can't give it up!
Why would I want captivate froyo? They did such a good job with jf6, and jh7. I will wait for the devs to use source and improve on it
Running ryudes kb1. No complaints here.

Same here. There is no way I would trade Andromeda for a bloatware filled stock rom.
I've been very happy with Firefly (2.2 so far). Not planning to try the AT&T Froyo unless I find some super features not available on any custom ROM.
Andromeda 2.1 here, ain't turning back to stock.
Swyped from my Froyo-ed Captivate.
Really loving my Perception 10.4, sad that DG isn't supporting anymore. Baffles me why so many on this forum are flashing the ATT rom
Runnin darky's ROM...extremely satisfied with it...waiting for Cog4 to incorporate more features and then am gonna flash that..also waiting for MIUI and CM7....stock at&t/samsung releases dont even come close to what the DEVs are cooking here....
EPIC AWESOME JOB!!!! u guys are greaat!
I am on a hand modified KB1 now. I was on Cognition 2.3b8 based off of JJ4 before that. I tried going from Cognition 2.3 to Perception (based off the Armani Captivate) for a couple of weeks, but ran into connection lost when fully charged and randomly issue. This turned my phone into a battery hog (as it searched for signal while without connection) and an unreliable communication device. After researching it, I realized that the issue is present in most non i897 ROMs, and went back to Cognition 2.3b8 (not Cognition 3.x, because it is a i896 base ROM). Since Cognition 4 and Torch 1.x were not available immediately after release, I decided to go back to my old hand tuned stock setup, with KB1 as a base. I am very happy with what I have . I do miss a few niceties like extended power button menu, battery indicator mod, and lock screen tweaks, but not enough to flash the custom KB1 ROMs yet. I will likely make the switch once Samsung releases the source code for KB1, and custom ROMs start putting in some fixes like Voodoo Color, Sound, and BLN, which are not possible by hand editing system files.
Firefly 2.3 + Awesome modem. Why would I ever want to flash more crap/bloatware onto my phone. Samsung doesn't release very good "updates", and ATT adds to their failures. I'll stick with my ROMs thank you
I'm running Serendipity 5.11. Why downgrade to the AT&T release?
Most are using 2.2.1 as a base for cooked ROMs so AT$T's 2.2 would be a step backwards. Not even worth developing IMO.
AT$T = Too little too late......
I just got my captivate today and as I watched the usps tracking site and read the reports of the long awaited froyo, I felt so lucky that I wouldn't have to wait.
However, after fifteen minutes with eclair I knew that I'd be on fire fly 2.3 by the end of the day.
So no stock for me period.
I must say the idea of using kies wasn't encouraging at all.
Thank you tireless devs for saving me from the doldrums of stock bloated firmware!

AT&T i897 Codebase Pros:
Audience chip enabled
No network compatibility issues
No need for adding rotation fixes, button fixes, etc. in the kernel, and thus less chance of coding errors
Better rendering by 2.2 browser without checkerboarding
Bluetooth static issues do not exist
AT&T i897 Codebase Cons:
No HSUPA (HSDPA works)
Less bloatware to remove to begin with
Lack of fixes from android 2.2.1 codebase
Fewer options available for tweaking due to carrier locked ROM
Fewer developers working on uncovered issues compared to i9000
You can't just ignore the native device ROM because of the minor version downgrade.

At this time it its not just a minor version downgrade. Devs have been working on and improving 2.2.1 for months. Advancements through development make it a major downgrade.
Source may provide great improvements
I waited for the official 2.2 rom. one reason was seeing all the post about how some flashed a rom and something stopped working. Then there was all the rigging you had to do to get things like the market to to work because the Captiviate wasn't "officially" on 2.2 yet. I am hoping some of the devs here will take the official rom and fix it.
Plus my gps and such worked fine right out the box so I decided to wait until official 2.2 to start tricking out my phone.
I am running Pargaon RC6 and would never go back to stock 2.2. There are some advantages to go with the stock, but more advantages running a custom rom to me...I will wait until the developers use the stock source to improve the custom roms!

Most of those are likely patachable into the 2.2 Captivate base as needed, once Samsung makes the source code available. Some of these improvements were related to making the non native 2.2.1 based code work on the Captivate in the first place, and might not be needed for the native 2.2 code.

[Q] narrowed down

Have been wanting to flash a custom rom for a while (rooted with unleash the beast, I know it's ancient) on 2.1, had been planning on DG's Cognition (was just updated to 4.3), but also came across Continuum v4, which looks great. Was leaning more towards Cognition, figuring it'd be more stable based on KB1, but not hearing any complaints from people using Continuum. Any downside I'm wondering to going with Continuum, as it's I9000 based 2.2.1? Thanks.
Edit: Now may be leaning more towards Cognition now that it's been updated (I think it was the Continuum theme that was luring me in)
not sure about continuum but it may have refernces to a nonexistant camera being from the i9000. not sure but i think all the newer roms have that fixed. really the only downfall of i9000 roms is that some people claim the att roms have better call quality because they use a different method of noise reduction, im not sure if that is proven and i havent run an att rom in a while, i do notice having more problems hearing people than when i bought the phone but i didn't notice it imediately upon flashing an i9000 rom so it is not a good observation. but the i9000 roms offer hsupa (over rated unless you tether and open alot of webpages at te same time) and a bit better benchmarks and maybe a little smoother.
neither is a bad choice and cognition has all the important mods like voodoo sound and lagfix and various tweaks. and oc/uv if you want to do that sort of thing so it is not limited much by being an att rom.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I think the AT&T version takes advantage of the audience chip for sound quality. Likely won't oc/uv, but looks like both have the ability to do so. Looks like both have the ability for lagfix with ext4.
As long as you've got the ROM flashing down, I would try several ROMS and stick with what you like best. Personally, I like Serendipity. No knock on any other custom ROM, but it's my personal preference. Happy flashing!
try out phoenix/firefly/supernova. all three are awesome man. really fast, super stable, smooth as hell, great battery life, gps actually works. the developers will help anytime they get the chance. which from what i've seen is anytime a question is asked. seriously really great roms.
I prefer i9000 based ROM to KB1 based ROMs.
KB1 is Android2.2 while i9000ROMs are on 2.2.1 now. I think 2.2.1 fixed some memory leaking bug.
Also I personally feel the i9000 ROMs are more polished.
My favorites are pheonix, supernova, and fusion. With firefly as number one backup.

Gingerbread vs Froyo on Captivate

Guys, just wanted to know your thoughts, if its advisable to move to GB on Captivate or remain on Froyo. In short, what are the advantages of moving to GB, over Froyo on Captivate, other than GB being the latest and greatest. I'm not sure if Captivate hardware at this point, can be supported completely by GB yet or other way around.
So let the discussion begin
I'm using miui and I love it. Had serendipity before and battery life is so much better with gb.

GR-12, I9000 reoriented vG.1.2 and UGKC1 modem works better than any other I9000 port I have ever used. GPS is way better without any "fixes" added!
Don't be fooled by the "glowing" testimonials. All the GB ROMs are still in development and have some issues. It just depends on whether you can live with those issues or not. If you need everything on your phone to work properly, stick with a Froyo-based ROM for now.

You mean that GPS is better on GB ? I never had any issues with GPS in all the latest Froyo ROM's.
I think GB is just better out of box! Better performance, FANTASTIC (comparatively) GPS, stability, and bragging rights to me friends (maybe that one is just me ha).
The only disadvantage is the lack of variety. There are GB ROMs surfacing, but it'll take time before we have more than maybe 5 to choose from, with 1 or 2 elites (well, that's with froyo as well regardless of the number of ROMs IMHO).
Basically, the choice is yours. I love GB, but it has presented some unforseen problems on some of my friends' phones and I've had to fix them (nothing major, just randomness).
There's my two cents!
Regards
Smith

Yea, to be frank, I did use a couple of GB ROM's and they were good, but lots of bugs still to be fixed. I personally felt the only 2 reasons to go to GB was bcoz it was the latest/greatest and some GB ROM's support Netflix
P.S: One of my favorite apps Galaxy Tuner doesn't work on GB
I have been using continuum 5 for a couple of days and for me, it's been better than stock froyo for sure.

Here's the problem with anecdotal evidence, it only applies to the person giving it. What you consider to be "zero problems and full functionality" is only relevant to the way YOU use your phone. It doesn't mean everyone using that ROM will have the exact same experience because they likely don't use their phone exactly as you do. Reading the various GB ROM threads, there's enough people having issues ranging from minor to major to validate my statement. I don't have to use the ROM to see that. There's a reason "best ROM" threads get deleted or closed in here. It's because what works for one may not work for another. Rather than try to pass off my experience with a ROM I prefer to caution people not to accept the "glowing reviews" without a grain of salt. Maybe there'd be less people with problems if they were just a little hesitant to jump into flashing XYZ ROM based on those glowing reviews.
All gb based roms, as they are right now, are full of bugs/problems. Anyone who states otherwise is either a liar a fan boy or just doesn't know what they are talking about. Period.
GB roms have better battery life which is very important for me. and gallery flies : )

Here's the thing, GB is the future around here. Very little development is continuing on froyo roms. One very popular rom is being finished by it's developer and a few others are also being finalized. The focus is rapidly shifting to GB for obvious reasons, it's just better and has way more potential. Personally I've had no issues with it and find it every bit as stable as the best froyo roms.
You will never know if you don't try it how it will run for you, but reading threads and listening to people complain about this and that can be found in any rom thread, froyo or GB.

The problem is that because it is the next big thing, there are those who are jumping into it who have neither the expertise or ability to fix it when it goes wrong. I see people who haven't even mastered the simpler task of updating from Eclair to Froyo willing to start right off with the more complex procedure of flashing a GB ROM. Then many of those people (if they don't screw up the flash) end up trying to go back not knowing anything about the changed bootloaders and they end up in a world of hurt. The forums are filled with them and their issues. I'm all for experimentation, but human nature often overrides common sense and you get too many people who would rather jump feet first into the deep end and then come looking for someone to throw them a life preserver instead of putting on a flotation device before going into the water.

Thats a personal decision. I'm not about to tell someone not to try something, it should be their decision based on how comfortable they feel about the process. In reality it's more like 1 or 2% who end up with serious issues, I believe it was icezar who confirmed those percentages. If people take the time and read the instructions, it's no more difficult than flashing froyo. I remember a few bricks when froyo roms started appearing. Your always going to have some idiots who don't read first and get in trouble. Thats why all Devs post a disclaimer in their original posts. User beware no matter what you flash.

I haven't ran into any problems that have warranted switching back to Froyo ROMs yet. Sure, they're not as polished as some of the Froyo ROMs, but it's not something you can notice right off the bat anyways, unless you're a developer yourself and actually looks for bugs/problems.
Went MIUI a couple of hours ago.
Now i find myself restoring back apps on A3 via TiBu.
Spoiled by stablity.
GR-12 actually got me to use my Captivate again, and even though I sold it, it worked fine for everything I used it for. That's texting, talking on the phone, and GPS, to name a few. Bluetooth may not work while your streaming Pandora as you drive down the road using the calculator, but I didn't really try any of that.

Mine is 1009 and GPS doesn't work on any custom ROM, used to work on stock 2.1.
