hey i've notice that whenever i received a text message, there would be times where the it would say that the message is from another contact in my phonebook. when i click on it, it would tell me that its from the person that did sent it. for example....
josh texted me a message, and when i slide down the notification bar it could say brett, then when i click on it, it would take me to the conversation i had or having with josh
do you guys know what i'm talking about?
Are you on froyo?

Has happened to me as well on a stock JH7 captivate.
This happened to me a lot when I first got the Captivate...turns out that I had some random contacts linked together, and once I took care of that it never happened again. It doesn't sound like this is the case with you, but I'd say just check it out in case.
i experienced that also before... im on stock jh7 right now. i noticed that when i ran task killers and terminating the messaging app it would mess up my messaging when receiving sms.
i tried excluding the messaging app from the task killer and everything worked fine ever since. try it it. might help you.
I'm on JH7 and am still getting that. I did have task killer, but I uninstalled it. I've checked all my linked contacts and they are properly linked. So I'm not sure what else is causing this.

Anyone else notice that they're not getting notifications for some received texts on the Inspire? It seems to be random, and I don't notice the new text until I open up the messaging app and see it there, I don't get sound/vibrate or anything in the notification bar. I'm using the Inspired ROM and rooted but I don't think that's the cause of the problem.
I noticed the same thing this morning. I'm completely stock for the moment.

Well, I guess I'm glad it's not just me. I hope somebody has a fix for it.
I only sent a test message last night after I got the Inspire and it was received and I was notified without issue. Then I installed Handcent and turned off stock messaging app Notifications and Handcent has been working fine.
Rooted with a dhd rom here. I didn't think I was having this problem but checked my messages and sure enough I had one from a hour ago I never got a notification about..... the gf soooo isn't going to believe me its my phone again.

I had a similar issue where my 2 Gmail accounts weren't giving notifications when I received new email. Also my Sense clock/weather wasn't always updating the weather when I unlocked the phone.
I ended up doing a factory reset and reinstalled all my apps manually and everything appears to be fine at the moment.
Yep, same problem. Seems to only happen later in the day?

I've had the same thing happen. I was in the middle of a conversation and it seemed like the other person just disappeared. Was going to send them another text when I noticed they had actually responded.
The issue clearly hasn't been resolved... It's happening to me as well. No notification. Or I get it, hear it and feel it, and then unlock my phone and no notification in the top bar or on the msg icon on my homescreen. But its def there when I open msgs....this is very frustrating as I've been patiently waiting by my phone for an answer about a new job. Has anyone had a fix for this? I'm completely stock no root. I'm about to go on to ATT and have words with them if it can't be resolved I'm geting a new phone...this is stupid we can't get basic functionality to work....out of the box.
You could try using a different SMS app like Handscent that does notifications itself. I think Go SMS does notifications too.
Or they could admit there is an issue and fix it. I shouldn't have to get a third party app to do basic phone functions like sms and phone. Wtf!
Or you could root your phone instead of expecting AT&T to fix something when it takes them months just to release updates for things that should have been included in the first place.
Well its not really on ATT its on HTC. And besides rooting would void my warranty. And if I get this job ill be leaving the country, in which case id like to return the phone as I doubt it will do me much good in the Netherlands. Either way. Shoulda worked correctly out of the box. It's an HTC sense/Rom issue not an ATT service issue.
I know this is probably something that can't be fixed without working with T-Mobile, but they can't seem to figure out what the problem is and I'm getting desperate
Whenever someone sends me a text I get duplicates of it over and over until I turn on WiFi calling, which seems to work fine. I have had this problem with two different G2x (I sent the first one back thinking it was a hardware issue). This also does not happen on my Nexus One (I moved the SIM card back over and the issue disappears).
I am thinking it has to be something to do with the communication between the G2x and my T-Mobile cell network. Any information anyone has about this that could help me help T-Mobile find the issue would be great.
Thanks.
You don't have another messaging app installed, do you?
First thing I did when I got the replacement was sync Google contacts and tell someone to text me and it started happening. I factory reset the original one I had 3 times and the problem persisted.
Are you running juicedefender? I get duplicates of some messages because juicedefender shuts off mobile data, so the network doesn't receive the notification that the MMS was received. It will try and resend every 5 minutes for a specified number of times until the message is received.
Nope, had no apps installed. Plus I get the duplicates sometimes less than 1 minute apart.
Thanks for the responses so far. This problem is really starting to get irritating.
I was getting a lot of duplicates. Seems to have spied for now. No clue what was doing it
Its really irritating because I love the phone, but I can't use it if I am constantly getting spammed by duplicate text messages.
yea i got 55 texts from 12 am to 11 a m from the same person 2 different texts and it kept going for a couple hours after too idk why i just got a new one today though but it's got a bad bleed so im just returning it and going to wait a week or two hope they solve it by then already sent lg a pic so
If your problems anything like mine a replacement won't fix the problem, unless I somehow got stupendously unlucky.
Anyone figure this out. I have the same problem. It is not every text message and not every person. It is pretty random. The same person can send me 4 texts 2 are normal, one repeated twice and one 24 times over a period of time, usually a couple hours.
Check any of the apps/widgets that have anything to do with calls/texts, even just showing a number of unread texts. If there are any that have the permission "Your Messages: Send SMS-received broadcast" uninstall it and see if the problem persists. I think I may have had an app called Organizer Widget that was blocking my phone from sending that broadcast.
I had your problem.
I was running on stock G2X, and I was receiving text after text after text.
I spent time on the phone with the T-Mo reps, and he concluded that:
"it's a server problem. You see, our messaging database isn't reading that your phone got the text, and thus it re-sends it in hopes that it receives it."
Basically, he is saying that the messaging server is tripping. But, this is not exactly true, because if it was the messaging server, then it would be universal. It is simply a G2X stock-rom problem.
I think it actually might have something to do with the baseband, but I am not sure if CyanogenMod updates it or fixes it when flashing.
I have a fix.
After I flashed myself some CyanogenMod, the problem was instantly fixed.
So, I think its a problem with the stock rom. Definitely. The CM rom works perfectly, no repeating messages. Also, the current nightlies are mighty stable.
I have this issue as well. It doesn't happen often but when it does it sends 10 or more duplicates.
I have handcrafted sms and launcher products which displays the number of texts on the dock. Running rooted stock.
It hasn't happened in a while, so I doubt it is related to the Apps.

I've had this issue on ALLLL my android phones I've owned . Even non Android phones and my unlocked iPhone. I have tried different similar cards as well.
I have noticed it happens the most when I receive messages from a Verizon user; followed by AT&T users. I never (not that I've noticed) had duplicates from Sprint or other T-Mobile users. Only Verizon and AT&T.
My point being I think it's a T-Mobile issue. Or a communication issue between providers.

I'm actually having this problem running CM7 Nightly 63, it's irritating as hell.
Dont know, but I'd like to know the problem too. I have chompsms installed but it shows duplicate in the stock messaging app too.
I really don't think it has anything to do with the phone...
Like I said earlier, all my phones have done it. Even my crappy clamshell Samsung back in the day. Or my unlocked iPhone.
Server makes the best sense.

I have the issue as well...although it seems to be only with certain contacts, however across every carrier. Averages 3-4 duplicates. Never had this problem before with any phone. SIM card went straight from my N1 to my G2X. Kind of an old SIM. Maybe I'll try a re-provision on a new SIM to see if that makes any difference.
Thank you @shaneledford, uninstalling organizer widget solved my problem... everything's back to normal

I've also had this problem with previous phones, though it tends to happen much more often when one of them is an Android phone. Only started happening with my phone before this one, though, but that was a Nokia non Android, so it's a fairly recent thing but not Android specific.

Sometimes when I click on "Messages" and then click on a thread I wish to view a totally different thread gets opened. I know it's not my finger because the thread that would open is oftentimes nowhere close to the one I clicked on. Several times I've inadvertently sent an SMS to the wrong recipient, which resulted in several comical situations.
Has anyone experienced this issue? I've tried to search the forum but didn't come up with anything.
My Bolt is rooted, running the leaked MR1 RUU
That happens to me constantly
Both pre and post ota update
Also post ota my messages app has been way slower and forces closes on a regular basis

This is a Froyo (and maybe before) issue and not an issue on "every android phone". Once you upgrade to a custom Gingerbread Rom or the official Gingerbread update (as of today this isn't out yet) you will see this problem go away.
It seems to be a problem with all android phones no matter the rom. It did it on my rooted Droid 1 also. Go sms pro is a good replacement for stock. Rooted or not it fixes the problem and has a lot more options.

Roger that, I have the same issue. Also, I moved to the T-bolt from an Evo and the Evo with Froyo had the same problem. As soon as I installed CM7 on the Evo, the problem was gone.
I'd say try using GO SMS Pro. Much better than the stock messaging application.
Hey guys,
I have actually looked everywhere but none had the answers that worked for me.
My problem is that, if I get a text message, that same text message keeps showing up forever. My friend texted me this morning, and so far I got that same text message more than 80 times so far. I'm running CM7 RC1 for p999. Can anyone help?
This problem is really getting annoying and I'm getting frustrated.
hahahaha!!!!
sorry
if person who send it to u txt msg, was got no reception, or some another problem, and he press "SEND" button -20 times, when he gonna get reception it will be send same msg 20 times
i get multiples also here and there, mostly coming from a Blackberry phone though, could be a coincidence.
I live in a bad signal area and get multiples all the time!

The thing is, my friend did not press send 20 times, I had cm7 nightly 49 installed when this problem started so i thought the problem was with the rom. So then i installed CM7 RC1 and the problem kept on continuing, i keep getting the same text non-stop.
I looked in other forums as well, there werent much help to be found.

Yeah, i did a factory reset, and cleared dalvik cache before going into CM7 RC1. At first when it happened I was using Go SMS Pro, and I thought that was causing the problem... so then I uninstalled it and the problem continued.
I have the stock messaging app installed now and still have the problem.
I think your friend is screwing you over haha, SMS Bomber by any chance? try downloading the Anti SMS Bomber app
got it ! CALL TO T-MOBILE explain problem...you will get reset from network. Don't worry it's not a phone

I Called up tmobile, they told me a lot of people with the G2X are having the same problem and the only fix is to wait for the update LG is going to release...
I had this problem once before, received 150 copies of the same message, called T-Mobile, they told me it was a problem with the senders phone. Something about it not getting a "message received" message back from either my phone or the system. Told me to have the sender shut down and pull battery. When they rebooted their phone I didn't get the message anymore.

I called tmobile too, they told me plenty of other people have the same problem with the SAME phone (LG G2X). I would understand if I was getting multiple texts from one person, but I get multiples from anyone who texts me. I guess I'm going to have to wait for an update from LG.

Yes, sounds like a different origin for similar problems, I was only getting one message repeated, the others were arriving normally.
After looking around a bit more, a member of xda (shaneledford) figured that an app called organizer widget is causing the problem... its not just that app, its an app that has the same SMS permissions as organizer widget.
This applies to the g2x, I don't know about other phones though...

I don't know about the other people that have gotten the OTA (or did it manually), but mine still has the text message bug present in EP4P where the texting will just randomly stop and won't resume until you reboot the phone. Anyone else have this issue?
I had that happen to me for the first time ever last night. Really strange.
I've had text messages randomly fail to send, but I've never had to restart my phone to get it working again. I just wait a little bit and resend it and it goes through.
That has happened to me on every GB leak from ep1w and on, including gunny charged and humble.
Every once in a while every message fails to send, and when i retry, it immediately says failed within 1 second of pressing send like it isn't even trying. The only way to fix this is rebooting.
