Hi All.
I'm starting this thread to avoid discussing this in the original thread about the lack of memory on the Vodafone version of the HTC Magic.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530162&page=5
Here's what I posted there.
----------------------------
Hi All.
I've got a Australian Vodafone version of the magic.
I was very dissapointed after I used the unit for a while.
I loved the OS, but the displaying of things didnt seem smooth enough.
After I found out the phone has less memory than the standard HTC magic, i got pissed off and felt duped by vodafone.
I believe it is slightly deceiving for Vodafone to do this, and they should clearly say the phone has less memory that the HTC brand
Anyways, long story short.
I called vodafone australia, and after some time on the phone, I managed to talk to someone who arranged a return of my phone and cancellation of the contract.
I can give you guys the details of the person after I return mine and everything goes smooth (just in case, dont wanna piss him off before I sort mine out)
Cheers
I still haven't returned my phone, because I'm waiting for a letter and prepaid express post satchel from Vodafone.
In the meantime, I'm looking to restore to original condition with my nandroid backup.
I followed the instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530723
but hit an error. On the restore, So i posted what happened and hopefully will get some help from one of the more experienced members.
to those others who feel pissed off sell it on ebay for ~$700 and then buy either a HTC Magic or a hero for a similar price. this way you can keep the plan you are on..... if you like it that is!
well, I followed an auction last week, and the I believe it sold for $660
I'd like to get a hero but they're not being sold yet.
I think the best option for me is return it. I'd rather play it safe.
I can always get a magic again from VF or anyone else if i feel like it.
Hello, I am going to visit the US in August and I would really like to buy Samsung Captivate, but not the Samsung Galaxy S (I really hate its iPhone style design)
Is it possible for a foreigner to buy Captivate (and unlock it) and use it with my own sim card here in Russia?
just found this instruction - http://ddd.in.com/videos/watchvideo...ngular-att-free-network-sim-code-8507521.html
does it work?
As for non-contract? yes! It will be $350 in any AT&T store.
As for unlocking it, i'm not sure.
so I can just come and buy it in AT&T store without showing some documents like I am a citizan of the US? and btw the price is very low, comparing with its price here in Moscow - $1000
Then, I need just to unlock it for any sim card?

LoL! Yes dude, you can buy it. The only citizenship doecuments you need are US Dollars!
Thanks, dudes, you really helped me)
It's really promising)
The design of Samsung Galaxy S really suks and the Captivate one is awesome
dark, just in case you didn't already know, as of now unlocks aren't available, but it's highly likely that they will be soon. This means that you wont be able to use your phone right away when you get back to the mother land.
On the other hand if you hang in there, by the time unlocks come out, there will be plenty of guides on how to make this phone look as little as the ios as possible. Not to mention alot more online support for it.
Just wanted to make sure you didn't get back home to a huge disappointment .
Good point. I just assumed he was aware of that. As quickly as this thing is gaining momentum, I doubt you'd have to wait long before it's unlocked.
Well, just read the review on one web-site and there was a phrase:
AT&T won't let you sideload apps.
I am confused, does it mean that there is no android market???????????
I saw a video - how to unlock Samsung Captivate - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dlxc6AJaAys
Does it work?
So if it's fake, I am planning to stay in the US until the end of August, are there any chances for the unlock to reveal?
There is a market, but you can't put stuff on there that isn't from the market.
With AT&T, the only thing can be installed is stuff from the market.
Do you mean that it's just not possible to put .apk files in the phone?
Well, in this case I am OK with Android Market
crap, just read in another review, that there is an AT&T Market - this totally sucks!
So, it is different from Android Market?
Or there are two markets there?

Yup thats pretty much the case, so if you do not mind it, you are good to go. I would not worry too much about an unlock as this phone is spreading faster than fire through the community and should be unlockable pretty soon.
That I have no idea about. I have never owned an Android phone so I only go by what I have read.
but as of this weekend, I will own one!
Maybe root will help us to install 3-rd party apps?
Guys, please post additional info about unlock , when some new information reveals.
I am really interested in this phone.
And can someone check if it is possible to choose Russian locale? I mean transforming the interface to the Russian one
Here is an unlock instruction http://hyfeno.com/unlocked-samsung-i897-captivate/
it seems like it should work
btw please advise me the cheapest US 3g network I am planning to travel in many states of the USA for a month...

You should try asking AT&T for the unlock when you purchase it from them. They should be able to provide you with one free of charge since you are paying for the phone outright!
After paying 6 bucks, this is the reply I got from their site.
Hi,
unfortunately your code wasn't found in our database, would you have another phone you like to unlock?

I'll be calling them today.
AND it's not a free unlock code.
it's 6 bucks as mentioned.

well, may be you misspelled the code?
if it finally works, it's better to pay these 6 bucks, than paying $1000 for the ugly version of Galaxy S here in Russia
The non contract price I was just quoted from the ATT store were I purchased my phone said the the price off contract was 499.00
I was going to buy this phone for 350.00 but 500.00 is a little steep.
so is it $350 or $500?
I heard that $500 is just for t-mobile version
I was going to go over there to exchange it and buy it out right. Look at the prices of the galaxy s line on ebay,500$ sounds about right.
500$ is what I was told from a corporate ATT store.
Hey guys, so I'm in the market for a new phone..my Titan is giving up the ghost in the way of keyboard un-responsiveness and I really want Android..
I'm currently on Metro PCS (and plan to stay..$35 a month after tax with unlimited everything is hard to beat) and I was wondering what phone would be a good fit for me.
I'd like to not go through the hassle of trying to get the esn added to the network so a phone where it can be changed (like my Titan) is a must.
I don't mind if the phone doesn't come with android loaded already as long as there is a fully functional android rom that I can load it up with.
Lastly, I don't really want to go over $100 for a good used one so that probably narrows things down quite a bit, but if there just isn't anything that fits the bill then I can work in some wiggle room.
Anyway, hopefully you guys can help me out..
Thanks for any info!
get the htc hd2 there any where from 99.99-350.00 usd at the moment
Sweet, thanks for the advice, I'll check it out..
Edit: so the cheapest I could find it was $150 on craigslist but that was an old post so it probably sold at that price. I wasn't able to find any info concerning it and the Metropcs network. There are probably just some basic settings that I need to get it onto the network though.
Keep the suggestions comin!
Anybody out there?
So...was this a really bad question?
Maybe someone could give me some pointers on what the right questions to ask would be..
Hi all,
I know that the subject has been asked many times, but I have not found any satisfactory answer to the reason around the web... a small introduction first. I just bought a shiny new HTC Wildfire, but I was somehow scammed by the SFR (a French telephone company) because the employee refused to sell me the unlocked one - and my French was not that competitive with his The difference in the price should have been of 10 euros, now to unlock it SFR asks me 65 euros... which is over the 25% of the cost of the phone! The only alternative I could find was to pay 30 euros to companies I do not know nor trust, and still that amount of money is not negligible. So I started looking for free alternatives, and found none but to wait the 6 months after which it seems that French operators are obliged to unlock it for free.
Now, the real question: I have read (many times) and accepted that rooting and SIM-unlocking are unrelated procedures, yet I couldn't find an answer to why. In my favorite Linux distribution, I open a terminal, write su, and then I can do anything, from unmounting hard disk and making dd on it at my own risk, to rewriting the kernel for fun. As far as I have seen, on Android it is pretty much the same, one gets full access and can even install a brand new OS, let's say Debian. In this picture, how is it possible that I cannot simply turn a flag like "SIM_LOCKED" off, while I can do so just using a magic, expensive, number? In my "naifness" I would think that once I have installed a brand new OS it will accept without questions any SIM I put in it... where am I wrong?
And if you are wondering, yes, it is pretty much a matter of money, I do not estimate a 2-year warranty the 25% of the price of a phone
hello,
i'm not sure i can answer your question, but few weeks ago the french providers decided to give the unlock code for free after 3months ago. So no more 6 months! even if it's still long....
And i'm interested about an answer for your question, my galaxy s is still locked Bouygues telecom...
I want to learn some basic stuff and have a ton of questions. I posted a few but the 1 person that Dm'ed me when I tryed to ask more questions yelled at me for having tone when even though I was very nice because I am greatful that he took the time.
I do not want to get yelled for no reason so there is no way I will ask him anything else.
So is there anyone willing to take sme time to have a conversation with me about a samsung S6 phone?
No one is going to yell at you for no reason... if they do it's a lick on them.
Post your questions so others can learn as well.
No one person knows all the solutions so you benefit from more sources of knowledge by posting the questions on the forum.
Or simply be patient as you will eventually find the answers you seek... works for me.
Ok I was given a phone samsung from a lady that changed to a new company.
The phone she gave me has no sim card and has been resotred to start.
What th woman who gave it to me and I both do not know is if the phone is carries locked and how to gey it unlocked.
I have googled and it seems there are a lot of unlock code generators that charge a fee.
Can anyone tell me first is there a free one second if not one that is not some kind of a scam.
The phone says it is a Samsung SM-G920A.

Have the last owner sign in on the phone and delete their Google and Samsung accounts on it.
You can then do a factory reset and configure it as you please.
That's the easy way... any other way will be much harder.

Maybe I am not explaining this right.
The samsung phone has been reset so it is like it is a new phone.
It was a ATT carrier and I want to use it on a differant carrier so I need to unlock the carrier.
So I am looking for a way to unlock the carrie.
So what I am looking for is a
Unlock Code Generator.
Is there one that is used and not a scam?

The easiest way is to have AT&T unlock it.
If there's no outstanding balance on the account they should. Usually the account holder does this, not sure how this will work in your case.
AT&T can still/could have blacklist(ed) the phone's imei even if you use a 3rd party unlocker.
Probably best to work it out with AT&T. They are very intolerant of delinquent accounts though. If a balance was owed by the previous owner they will probably want it paid to unlock it. They just want their money. If no money is owed you should be alright.
As much as I know... I may be mistaken. Never had to play with this.
