[Q] Backing up apps in Android - General Questions and Answers

Hey guys.
First of all, I own a Moto Milestone.
So I'm on stock 2.1 and I want to install a custom ROM which means wiping everything.
Now, I know how to back up my apps but once I reinstall them how do I make them appear in "downloads" so I could get updates? (I'll be using File Manager from the appstore to back up apps)
Thing is I have a lot of paid apps. Will my google account remember that I payed for the and let me redownload them?

Anyone?

fail.

maybe it's device based as well... if you don't get the update, just download the apk from the forum.

Well I have an Evo and to get mine to update I just went into applications and cleared the data from the market app and within a minute it updated.

Clear market data from settings
rm /system/app/Vending.apk
then retry the apk.
Would someone be able to post a link here for the new market for qvga (wildfire)?
EDIT: dont worry, i found it. but it didnt work. i guess im not that desperate anyway

My market.....she is gone!

Hey all, I'm running 2.3.3 Cyanogen 7 mod and when I first installed the mod I had no market. So I re installed it and the market was in there, I have since followed one of the solutions on the samsung galaxy forum regarding different themed markets and how to set them up.
This may seem stupid however I was able to get it working previously before updating to 2.3.3, in short I tried to install zip from SD card and the market has dissapeared and no longer is installed, I tried to install it again and even downloaded the stock and tried to install it as a .apk but it just wont work. I don't want to re-install 2.3.3 if possible but can't see any other options?
I've tried searching for any other threads about this but couldn't find any which actually gave an answer, has anybody seen or had this issue before?

http://goo-inside.me/gapps/ if you can't find them, choose the CM7 version in the table at the top.
More specifically you should download this : http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip and install the zip file via cwm recovery

Hey guys, thanks for those speedy responses - this is why I love the XDA forum!!
Sadly installing the Google apps didn't work either, all looked to install but after clearing the cache and fixing permissions (just to be sure) there was no market installed when I rebooted
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Just after flashing the rom you must reboot and in your first reboot login with your Google account.

Ah so I do have to reflash the Tom, bummer - that's what I was hoping to not have to do :-(
If its gotta be done then its gotta be done I spose, cheers for all the help.

Cod ball, reflash your rom without wiping anything, after that flash gapps and reboot.

Installing new Android Market

I searched but couldn't find a thread. So can someone tell me how to install the new Android Market on my unrooted Evo?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
I am on MIUI, and to my knowledge they didn't have the latest version in their recent release. Last night I believe mine updated automatically. I could be wrong, but I personally didn't manually update anything. I woke up this morning and it was updated to the most recent version. You may turn on your autosync and everything to see if it does it automatically.
If you have the apk. Uninstall any market updates from settings and use adb to push the new apk to /system/app/Vending.apk. this will overwrite your original vending apk so you might want to back it up first.

Just download and install like a normal app, its just a upgrade and you can downgrade if needed.

It should work on non rooted phones too

If you had backed up with Titanium Backup, just restore missing apps and data.
I didn't though. Any way to get the old market?

Which version are you looking for? StrifeSoldierIIV has offered to pull free apks for anyone who needs them and I might still have an older market apk in my dl folder.
Which ever version was the old style tablet market view before it changed to the look of the phone.
Sent from my Xoom using xda premium
someone on another forum had a similar issue... did a factory reset and restarted, then re-activated the google account and everything loaded correctly except a couple free apps... those they were able to reload via the web-market
good luck, and report back - I'm awaiting my xoom (hopefully tomorrow, but likely Mon/Tue) so interested in what works and what doesn't.
Done it already, no luck. Wife has the same apps not downloading.

Can you post an image/dump/nandroid of the system and boot from HLK75C?
I'm running HLK42B from the pilot 4G launch and would like to upgrade to this new version they are sending out now.
How do I do a system dump? I am not rooted, but intend to re-root as soon as I get the right files.

How to update apps? Please help

I download plenty of beta version apps and homebrew apps (not from market). Is there a way to update these without losing app data by uninstalling and reinstalling the new version. I don't want to lose the app data.
Thanks

Just install the new versions over the old ones. (App will be updated without data loss)
It doesn't let me do that. It tells me the previous version must be uninstalled before installing the new one.

In that case, use an app such as Titanium Backup to backup your data, then uninstall the old app and install the new one. After that, restore the data.
Do I need to root my phone to use that app?

it doesnt let me update , it forces me to uninstall making me lose data.
As stated the only way to do it is do back up the data with titanium back up. Uninstall the app, install new one and then restore the settings.
Also be careful about getting apks from places other then the official app stores or here

Is rooting safe?

As safe as installing apps you get outside of the play store. Safer even. Just do your research
