How to make a recovery image: Garminfone - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hello, Yes, I have searched and not found the answer, hence this thread.
I have a rooted Garmin-Asus Garminfone with 2.1 Eclair (aka Nuvifone A50).
Rom Manager does not support this phone (yet).
How can I make a full backup of this phone? There is no recovery image anywhere for it yet. I want to ensure I get the bootloader etc. copied.
What software is required? Nandroid? How do you install nandroid manually?
ADB REBOOT RECOVERY works. I get the menu after I hit the home key, but I am not aware of how to get it into recovery with buttons while powering it on.
I have to use ADB REBOOT to restart the phone out of the recovery screen.
Any thoughts & suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Spaz.

you know its kindda frustrating after knowing that not many people actually own this phone. I have been waiting for at least a recovery image to be made available so that we can do all the fun stuff but it looks like a long shot currently. Thankfully i have an HTC Wildfire too and it can run CM7.
Hopefully some dev gets hold of this phone. It would be nice seeing the garmin app in CM for example.

[Q] Sanyo Zio Sprint Help Please

So I decided that I wanted Android 2.2 Froyo on my sanyo zio and after many hours and tons of work I finally thought I found a way to do it. Rooted the device with Z4 root then ran clockworks rom manager in order to "update" my device. Well I did not see my device on the list and just as I went to click the back button my touch screen decided to be picky and pick one of the random phones on that list. It started the flash and I began to relax a bit (figuring if it was going to brick it would have done it right away) and near the end the phone shut off and still will not boot past the "sanyo" screen.
Is there any way to boot it into a recovery mode so i can put the factory OS back on it? And if so is there a way to put 2.2 froyo on this device?
yes and no
im thinking you can go to boot loader mode by hiting power button and holding a a few bottons randomly i found differnent types of loaded pages by doing this in different ways so if you can get in the correct boot loader you could probely get a spf or something

Power off the phone, hold volume up, end, trackball and power. that should get you in to fastboot mode.
Hopefully you have or can get a hold of the boot.img and system.img for your zio (is it sprint? cricket? if it's cricket, i can help you out with the img files).
google for the fastboot binary and put it in your tools folder of the android sdk.
"fastboot -h" will give you commands you can use to reflash the boot and system img.
I have to say though, after reading your OP, the carelessness at which you went after "getting Froyo", you're going to have a tough time of this.
Sanyio ZIO on Cricket
I want to Root my Kyocera Sanyio ZIo on Cricket's service. This is something that I have never done before. My andriod software has been updated. I have been looking all over the interent and there are a million links and blogs but they are all designed for some one who has actually done this before. There is not real "rooting for dummies" guide that goes step by step and really explains each step. I have download all sorts of apps (busybox, file browesr, ROM Manager and system app remover) but none of these grant me superuser access.
My latest research make me believe I need to enter the phone form a "Safe Mode" to upload a zip (su-2.3.1-bin-signed.zip) that my new File browesr will not open as it says it is "broken file can not be opened".
Can some one please assist me wit this? my email is [email protected]
Thank you for your time,
Joshua

No more recovery on Olipad

Hi, I Have installed in my Olipad clockworkmod v08.
Now, when i start in recovery mode, appear on display:
Recovery key detected
Booting recovery kernel image.
Can anybody help me?
Please.
Not to be rude but why would you install something designed for the GTab on your Olipad?
Curiosity and wanting to learn.
For Olipad ther'isnt custom rom.
Judging by the screen shots of the thing, I can see where you would think it might work. It's almost a carbon copy of the GTab, and it looks like it has TnT loaded as well. Unfortunatly, this is well beyond my scope.
Hi, I also have an olipad and I already went down a long road with CWMod and other moddings.
I can tell you that you are risking the booting capabilities of your device as there is something peculiar with the partitions and the boot.
I'm currently with a working pad, but I have to do a "tethered bot" because power button always brings up "apx mode" that is a low level mode to reprogram the device.
IF your device still boots with power button, I could try to give you some suggestion and you could help me "undo" a few mistakes.
Regards
SimonePDA
Not that this is going to help you right now, but I would avoid GTAB mods until a dev / modder with an Olipad can verify that these are, in fact, working. And maybe has a nvflash image of an Olipad device to give you a backout.
I've gotten a few PM's about this device too, and I've mentioned the same. I think it's similar to a zPad T2, at least from the little I know of it.

Hi,
What's missing from that list of files is the partition list, and possibly the .bct.
The former would tell you the number and size of the partitions, and if you don't have that you wouldn't know which of those .img files goes where.
The latter is a kind of mystery file, but is apparently critical.

yes try to rename the files update.zip and place in the root of the internal memory
then try reboot holding +
Also make sure you remove any sdhc card, when trying this, especially if you already have a recovery on it...

[Q] UK 3G Xoom - Possible brick? Bootloop after Moray update.

Never like to have to resort to posting myself but I've had a decent look around the web and can't seem to find a solid solution to my problem so I'm hoping to get some specific help
So I have a UK MZ601 3G Motorola Xoom which was happily running Moray 2.2.1 and had been rooted using the universal root method. Decided to update to 2.2.2 and now my Xoom is stuck in a boot-loop on the custom rippling water boot animation.
The tablet hangs on the first line when trying to boot into recovery so for all my efforts cannot access CWM and perform a hard reset and fresh rom install.
I've tried - and I'm assuming I'm correct in thinking this means I cannot get the Xoom to any stage where I can use adb to attempt to get in to recovery or push files to the system etc. this way.
From what I've read on other forum posts - booting holding volume up and power puts the device into an 'RSD' state which is another method of reflashing the device? I've read this requires an 'SBF' file - which I have seen for download - but believe it only works for the US models?
I've left the boot screen looping overnight - so its not an issue of it just being slow. Because of the custom boot screen I obviously can't return it to the shop as I presume its an obvious warranty void?
Would massively appreciate any help in bringing whats looking increasingly like a £500 paper weight back to life.
Thanks

When you press volume up and power, and hold it, it reboots, yeah? Then you wait about three seconds on dual core screen and tap volume down...what happens then? Do you see android recovery in upper left? Or starting fastboot protocol? Where does it hang? Just trying to see where things are going wrong. If you can get into starting fastboot protocol you are in good shape. If you can get into cwm recovery you should be in great shape. Check out the Xoom Heaven thread in General for some info on recovery.
You are most likely far from bricked...almost all of us have recovered from worse situations than you are in now so just keep cool.

Thanks for your reply - tried numerous times getting into recovery - get stuck with one line of 'starting fastboot protocol' and seems to hang there.
Have experience rooting and flash etc. and have obviously used adb in the past.
If I could just get to recovery - or a state where I could use adb I would be fine. But as I said in my first post - looks like I can only access an 'RSD' state.
Is there any other way of getting adb access from my PC? All the help for bricked xooms seems to concern US models - and don't want to try anything that will completely write it off!
Thanks again for your help.
Quick update -
Have retried Fastboot - stuck on 'Starting Fastboot protocol support'
Tried Android Recovery - got stuck on a black screen for a long long time but finally booted!
Wiped and re-installed what I know to be a kosher ROM! Was a scary moment there but thanks for your help and reassurance!

If you are still rooted and all, just for safety's sake, make sure to do another nandroid backup and save it to your micro sdcard. Backup, backup, backup. Then also make sure that you have a compatible cwm recovery installed, that will let you access your microsd card. It sounds like you're alright, so, cool.

More B63M users here?

Hi all, I just ordered a Chinese B63M phone at cect-shop.
Nice phone with great specs.
I alreadu know how to root it, but are there already custom Roms available?
Could'nt find a lot of info, just a Russion version.

Now that makes us 2 people who owns a B63M and got it from cect-shop.
What I find out about their phones is that it may not easily allow you to perform some insider operations, for instance, maybe its me but I could not find any custom recovery installed and this led to my first issue after I rooted, and installed the ROM manager, I saw the 'fix permission' and clicked it hoping to resolve my force close issues and it asked me to reboot after performing the process but it never got out of the boot, the loop continued, trying to boot into recovery become impossible but somehow a combination got me into a mode where I was able to clear flash and this took me back to a pre factory flash good thing I backed up titanium so I cld restore my apps and upgrade.
Right now I have tried to flash and the screen has gone blank yet the phone is responding to touch as I can hear sounds when the screen is clicked, indicating that its not bricked I just cant see anything going on (this is my current situation and seriously looking for help).
Lastly, I am trying to find out the htc equivalent to this b63m, it looks htc but I cant be sure which of the htc has been more or less cloned... this is going to help with a lot of things if known.
Cheers
Hi there,
If you are looking for a custom recovery, try this forum, altough you have to translate it because it is in German.
Lots of people there with our phone end they know how to get a custom recovery on it.
Cect is German

Yeah thanks, I have also stumbled on the site forum before but I cld not get something out of it, maybe I have not taken time enough to search, I am back on it now and hope I get a solution to the blacked out screen problems I have after flashing.
You know cect-shop is German, they are a German company in China... I am talking to them on skype and hoping they can help me out but they seem pretty busy or cant be bothered because their response is so much delayed or even not at all.
Well technoforum has a special B63M section with all tools required.
They also have nice custom roms like a Cyanogen fork.
I also don't speak Italian, but with the help of Google translate I'm getting pretty far.
But I do let Google translate from Italian to English, that gives me the best result.
Good luck!!
Do you also get no working screen after a reboot with both volume + and power button?
That should get you to the recovery screen without any ROM drivers.
Very correct, no screen even in recovery
When I do the button combination, I believe that it may have responded to my combination for recovery mode but I just cant see anything on the screen, it just remains the same way it was... maybe it graphics issue, as in is the graphics is messed up for some reason or resolution issue, you wont see anything being displayed.
I am just guessing here but all I did was to simply flash an update.zip from sd card.
That is very strange, since flashing a rom does not affect the screen of the recovery boot.
The rom video driver gets only active during the boot process of the rom.
In the past I had some boot problems with my Wildfire start-up that I solved by removing the SIM card and SD card, removed the battery for some minutes and them booted completely resetted.
You could try that, if that does not solve the problem, the only way to wipe the phone back to factory-reset is doing it blind.
After I get my phone I could make a step-by-step guide so you could get to the reset menu...
Another possibility is to re-flash a fresh recovery img to the phone. Since I don't know what was in your update.zip, you could messed up the recovery menue, or even the bootloader.
Re-flashing those could also help and you don. t need the display from the phone, since you use the PC for that.
Here it is
Here is the update.zip I flashed. http://chinamobiles.org/downloads.php?do=file&id=618&langid=4
I am a bit surprised myself that the screen is blanked out but the phone seem to be working still.
I have removed both SIMS and SD card plus battery several times etc. nothing changed.
You said ''After I get my phone I could make a step-by-step guide so you could get to the reset menu...'', I hope you get your phone soon tho, and i can see the step-by-step guide you made.
I have actually flashed recovery into it using flash tool, ODIN dont seem to see the phone (at least the yellow box saying COm4 or 5 is not showing), I can see the phone using adb but when I say adb reboot download or recovery, something happens but I cant see what it is.
I too have a B63M...!!! Spice Mi-350n...........
If you need a moded recovery, i can port it for you........but you need to follow some instructions...i'll give them tomorrow!!

Ahh thanks man... Ii will wait to hear from you tomorrow, I aim in UK and depending on what time zones you are in but I hope to find you online to connect again.
I hope you have understood my particular issue here tho, the screen if blank even tho the fone seem to be alive and it follows the boot sequence, I can even find it using 'adb devices' command, it just the screen gone blank.
Someone suggested it may be the boot.img but I dont know about that.
Cheers
I'm from India - Local time here is GMT+5:30......!!
So, here you go !!
B63M= MTK6573 + 650mhz + Android 2.3
So, one modded recovery.img can't be used for every B63M.......this is because a different B63M phone will have a different recovery.img..........(hope u understand)
Backing up everything:
1) ROOT is necessary. It is recommended to put the phone in 'Airplane mode' so that it won't disturb the process and make sure you have ~500 mb space in SD card.
2) Download 'BackUpTools.rar' from HERE and extract it to your SD Card. You'll have 2 folders - 'gscript' and 'Install'.
3) Install 'GScriptLite.apk' from gscript folder.
3) After installation, open the 'GScriptLite' application -> Menu -> Add Script.
4) Tick 'Needs SU ?'
5) Click 'Load File' and select 'Back23.sh' and then select 'save'
6) Now Click on 'Back 23' and Super User will ask for Permission and allow it. Nothing more to touch. Wait for few minutes. After few mins, it will say 'Auto Close is Cancelled'. Now its safe to close.
7) Your Back-Up will be in 'backup_' folder located in your SD card's root.
It will have files named ' firmware.info, preloader.img, nvram.img, seccnfg.img, uboot.img, boot.img, recovery.img, secstatic. img, misc.img, logo.img, expdb.img, cache.img, system.img, data.img' in that folder. Copy it to your computer and keep it at a safe place. More Over if you are posting in the forums or sharing it online, don't include ' data.img, cache.img and nvram.img' as they contain your personal information.
Here i need two files. One is recovery.img and the other is firmware.info.
If you give both, i can port one for your phone !! Also mention your phone's model name/number because, without that it is not possible.

That was the problem, you flashed only the update, not a complete Rom.
I suggest you make a complete re-flash vorm scratch, so refash a fresh recovery.img and re-flash als a new Rom.
You can vind one at technoforum' as earlier mentioned
I thot you shd read my latest.
Ok guys I appreciate this a lot.
Here at this point I think you shd hear my developments before taking any further actions or suggestions.
aha thanks, I did just that and it worked although it is still blank at the beginning of boot but later something shows up on screen and completes boots.
Remember I mentioned that someone suggested it might be a boot.img problem... well, I used flashtool to flash a boot image and I can say it worked, I now have the visuals, even tho the screen is still blank at boot start but soon after it picks up and its working, now I have the phone again.
so @balamu96m, my issue was basically the screen, without seeing anything I cannot follow the back up suggestion you gave me here, but now I can see it again.
A couple of additional issues tho...
1- I checked the kernel and it has changed from 2.3.5 into 2.3.4 and >In the current ROM flash I have lost a couple of capabilities like Flashlight, camera etc
2- I followed this link http://www.technoforum.it/forum/viewtopic.php?f=73&t=3351 to flash recovery and it says Successful with the green Circle -OK-... but I still cant get boot into recovery either when I use the keys combi or when I try to boot into recovery in mobileuncle tools, it just goes blank and stays like so until I have to remove the battery and restart boot normally.
3- From the same link above they have the Golight ROM in part 2 after recovery in part 1, I am assuming this a good ROM to flash and the things I lost will get back, but I still cant boot into recovery.
Coming back to the response from balamu96m... Should I still go ahead with what yu suggested and provide you the files details you want? both recovery.img and firmware.info... I am asking because I no longer have the original ROM that came with the phone and like I said I cant even get into Recovery after I tried flashing a new recovery.img, this one from the same link above (see the recovery.img inside the 'Recovery Moddata' file from the 'UPDATEB63MRecovery2012' download file.)
Great to hear that you have visual again!
You still have root yes?
The golight rom from technoforum is a good one.
I expect mine any moment now so I can customize mine too.
Good luck!

You flashed a recovery, but that is not working ah?? Oh God!!
Why did you do that bro??
Do you have any backup of the stock one??
If you dont have, then i have 2 ideas....one idea is to flash something else such that your fone won't boot....now you can send your phone back to the manufacturer and ask them to reflash everything!!!
The other idea, i'll tell you after sometime!!
It was always so

The reason i flashed recovery initially was that my phone went into a boot loop and I was unable to get into recovery, after a while somehow i figure it out and cleared flash and then restored my phone apps and co and got on fine.
But if I could not get into recovery it means that there was not stock recovery on my phone or it got missing somehow. This I have to ask Henkdrenth since he is getting the same phone from the same shop too, but there was no recovery in my B63m, I already heard there is a recovery problem with the phone anyway, and thats why I flashed recovery and it worked but then I flashed ROM and the screen went blank, which is what got me to this forum.
I did not just go and flash recovery, it because there was none on the phone in my opinion.

After many troubles, I found a mod for w690 which is the build version of my phone, I could not boot to recovery so used flashtool and when I load the scatter text of the one I found, it automatically load in every item on the list including recovery and boot img , etc, so I flashed these to my phone... and for the first time I was back in how the phone came to me,
Gingerbread has now returned to 2.3.5.
One thing I have noticed is that the phone freezes on me and then reboots?
I still cannot boot into recovery, I tried this again using mobileuncle tools...
It seem that I have flashed my phone which is good, but I was unable to wipe cache because I could not boot into recovery to do this which may be the source of the current freeze and reboot.
Can I solve this using the mobileuncle or what can I do to wipe cache, if that is the problem
Well, received mine, rooted it an flashed a new recovery from technoforum using myuncletools.
All went well, so I suggest you do also a fres re-flash with a proper recovery.
Hope that should solve your problem.
Edit: moved from my tablet to my PC to look for the link of a correct recoveryfile for you.
First, load this recovery.
Unpack it and put the content to the root of your SD card.
Use myuncletools to flash this recovery.
Now you should have a usable custom recovery that allows you to factory-reset and wipe your phone
Install a fresh rom

I haven't messed around with it until this very moment. I will admit that the price is killer but initial impression with the device could be better. I was impressed and I mean really impressed with its quadrant score. I'll root this device later today. Black Friday sales and I am tired.

I found a link to root this device on both ICS and jellybean. I will personally look into it tomorrow but I will post it if you would like to go ahead. The guide itself was written for ICS but later down the thread you will find another link to a working root for jellybean.
http://androidforums.com/insignia-flex-all-things-root/661247-how-root-insignia-flex.html
Please root at your own discresion and I sure hope you purchased a protection plan (GSP) for your tablet.
also picked this up at my BB, was surprised when i walked in at 3pm and they still had about 10. i want to root too
We had a large quantity to sell as well and they all went. It is honestly not half bad. And I would really recommend getting the GSP for the tablet in case of anything. Will report back after rooting.
Let us know if you have any luck. I found the link you posted before which led me to try Bin4ry. The script seems to be updated for JB in general but still had no luck. I'm on a Mac and haven't tried any of the windows rooting apps, like posted at the bottom of that thread. I do have a windows partition and would be willing to try that method if needed. That chinese one at the bottom seems shady regardless though.. I hope there is an alternative to that
Is there a way to flash clockworkmod onto this tablet?

I managed to get the CX-803 version of CWM for Rockchip 3066 from AndroTab.info to work by replacing its kernel with ours by unpacking and repacking with RK3xxx-Firmware-Tools by Sergio.
Note: This is for the Insignia NS-14T002 (aka iRiver NS-14T002) tablet that shipped with Android 4.2.2
Be EXTREMELY careful! Highly recommend you dump your current kernel and recovery partitions and save them somewhere before flashing anything.
If for some reason the recovery doesn't work, you can flash your stock recovery back as long as you can get back into root shell. But, if it fails to boot normally, I have no idea how to fix it. I have not been able to get any of the Rockchip flashing utilities to recognize the tablet so far, in bootloader mode (these devices have no fastboot) or otherwise. So don't blame me if you somehow brick your tablet.
You have been warned!!
CWM & Stock* Recovery image for NS-14T002
* if for some reason you can't back up your own, but again highly recommend backing up your existing recovery in case it's different from mine
You need root, and you need to do the install from root shell (don't forget to su) as described here.
I used /data/local instead of /dev - anywhere writable should be okay.
To boot into recovery:
adb reboot recovery
power off tablet, disconnect USB, press and hold Vol+ and Power until recovery comes up.
USB disconnect is not a strict requirement, but the battery status thing tends to get in the way.
In stock recovery, push Vol+ and Vol- simultaneously to bring up the menu. CWM menu should be visible at launch.
install petrus's Reboot App and use it to Reboot into recovery
Note: In CWM recovery you can swipe up for Vol+ (move up), swipe down for Vol- (move down), swipe left for Power (select), and swipe right for Back.
Re:Insignia Flex Tablet
I actually just purchased one of these last night. It was on sale at Best Buy for $99! I have successfully rooted it and it actually works great! I used Kingo Root to root but first I installed pda net first to install the necessary drivers. I have used this program to root several Android devices and haven't had a problem thus far!

Great news! I didn't have luck with that one but it might have been the machine I was using at the time.
Just to confirm, your model came with Jellybean 4.2, Model NS-14T002?
The previous version with Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 was easier to root.
Sent from a device with no keyboard. Please forgive typos, they may not be my own.

Yes my device came with 4.2.2 Jelly Bean! My first attempt using Kingo Root it did not see my device. Windows would not install the drivers needed. So I installed PDA net for windows and choose other in the program and once it was done installing it had configured the necessary drivers for Kingo Root to find my tablet and it rooted fine within a couple minutes after that! :good:
help!

Just picked up a Flex 8 on Black Friday. Not bad for $80. Not sure if I'd pay full price for it though.
It seems good for the price so far, except I'm having a rough time trying to root it.
Anyone have one and root it?

I was wondering, because I rooted my insignia flex 8 tablet and downloaded an app to try and customize the navigation bar and the developer provided a way on how to do it but said it was risky and took the risk anyway. Unfortunately, after turning on my tablet, it gets stuck on the insignia logo which I'm assuming it is stuck in the boot screen. I emailed the developer on how to fix this and said to flash a ROM to it. But I am just wondering if I am able to still do this even if my tablet gets stuck on the boot screen and freezes. I used ultimate dynamic navbar lite to try and customize my navbar.

I don't have the tablet anymore as it was a gift for a family member that lives elsewhere (I just wanted root so I could remote control it with TeamViewer QuickSupport), but will try to help from my notes and memory.
Flashing ROM may be difficult.
There is no fastboot on these Rockchip devices...
I couldn't find a way to flash without it being bootable and accessible via ADB
None of the Rockchip flashing tools would recognize it, even when I thought I got it booted into flash mode - it loaded drivers, but the flash tools still didn't see it.
The only way I know how to flash is to use a flash tool via ADB root shell.
Have you tried plugging it into USB on computer and booting it? Even if it doesn't reach the launcher, maybe it is accessible from ADB?
If you can access ADB, you may be able to reverse whatever the app changed from ADB shell and uninstall the app. (Politely ask the author for help)
You might be able to flash the system image I took too, but that has potential to brick it even worse.
If you have custom recovery loaded, you should just be able to restore from a backup.
If you don't have custom recovery loaded, things get a little more hairy...
You can try booting into Safe mode, maybe it'll bypass the offending app.
Power off tablet
Unplug USB*
Press and hold Vol- and Power until (hopefully) it completely boots
Try booting into standard recovery and see what your options are there - Factory Reset might help (depends what was changed and where)
Power off tablet
Unplug USB*
Press and hold Vol+ and Power until recovery comes up (Android with open chest)
Press Vol+ and Vol- simultaneously to bring up the menu.
* while unplugging USB isn't really required, because a battery app launches shortly afterward, it can make getting into recovery and safe mode more difficult
The folks over at Freaktab and Vondroid are really the experts at this Rockchip stuff.
For reference, the platform is RK3066, but there are many variations of the platform (different WiFi, memory configuration, etc) so you can't just grab any ROM.
Thank you!

Thanks for the information! I know I have ADB from rooting my tablet so I'm gonna check how that is when I get home and I have found some rockship information on vondroid so I will check that out also. Thanks for the reply again!

If you can access ADB then try loading the CWM recovery I posted above. If you can at least get CWM up, at worst case I can give you a copy of my stock backup to restore.

Did you get things sorted out?
If anyone is interested or needs it, Insignia sent me the GPL source.
You can also request it directly from them like it says on the website but it took a week or two (they might not have had a procedure in place yet, the agent had to forward my request to a different department) and I had completely forgotten until an unexpected package arrived.
Performance NS-15at10, ta120, ITQ701
Just thought someone might want to know, kingo root works, updated to 4.4.2, Booster plus battery saver pro is worth the money, better than 3c so far, still looking for more sources, any advice or help is appreciated especially for a recovery, dual bootloaders, ugh
