[Q] Should XDA add a Tablet Forum? - General Topics

I've been noticing more and more of the posts in the Android General forum as well as the General forum are regarding a new crop of Tablet devices.
An older thread asked the same question, but then seemed to die.

I'd like to bring up the subject again. Would XDA be a better place for those who are purchasing tablet devices to use as a resources if there was a tablet specific section?

That sounds like a good idea. I need help choosing one and that would make it way easier.

Its already there...The Samsung Galaxy Tab found its place on XDA and i found my place there as a Moderator...Well, there is no need for a Tablet specific forums...They are already classified under the company they are released from...No more classifications...

I understand there is a Galaxy Tab device listed under the Samsung devices, and this is nice for those folks looking for information.
Where do the Nook dev's go? Or how about those who purchase the 7" Sylvania tablet that KMart and Toys R Us is selling?
I was interested in knowing if XDA could create a generic Android tablet forum for those of us who have these sub-$350 tablets and need a central place to share information other then having to hunt down a thread here and there across all the general forums.

Does this site include the first XDA model not just latest versions?
Hi,
This is my first time to this site. As I look through the General forum I noticed that most comments refer to Models 1 + 11. I have just purchased from my daughter her XDA that she purchased over 2 years ago, she is upgrading, I just wanted to know if this site will be informative to me seeing I have an old model.
I understand completly that new models come on stream and forums like this will have a change in focus, I was just wondering if older units like my XDA are still a discussion point.
Welcome in the forum.....
I think if you had taken a closer look at the threads you would have seen, that there are many postings concerning the "good old XDA". Also there are many usefull information in the wiki.
Out in the world, there are many useres, that are still using this device.
Sure, the topics about the XDA I are not so frequently than for the newer models (i think that is normal), but if you have any questions i'm sure you get an answer....
Regards
Stefan
Thanks very much Stefan,
I did look through the threads, my mistake was I thought XDA 1 was a newer model then my plain older XDA.
I will now have much enjoyment looking for information on this forum and no doubt, pose more questions as I become familar with my XDA.

XDA Sister Site for All Android MFG's

Hello all,
With how big the buzz is on the new Moto Droid, and how awesome the reviews have been on it so far, I'm hoping the modding community would attack it like a wolf on a sheep.
The question of the day though, is where will the modders conglomerate? It's not a HTC phone, so of course it wouldn't be on XDA (though I wish it was, because the android community here is first class awesome).
Why not create a sister site of XDA called droid-developers.com (or any name really, i wrote this because android-developers.com is taken). We could move all of the android forums and posts over to the sister site (which would definitely save bandwidth here on XDA), and that way the devs can have a one stop area for all android development, not just HTC phones. They could then just create new forums for other phones, like the liquid a1, motorola droid, samsung galaxy, etc..
If we have different sites for different manufacturers, the dev and mod community will be broken apart on different sites, whereas they could all be centrally located on one site.
Having all the android devs in one location not only helps form a community, but it also makes it a one stop location for everything android modding and developing. Others have tried doing so, but each attempt failed because there was no backing. If XDA made the site, it would have the backing of XDA, and with them moving all the current android forums over to the new site, it would be instant 100% backing, as that is where the devs would go for their current projects that are already posted, and any new projects.
As it stands now, there is a different forum for dream/magic, yet a lot of the posts get double posted in each because they are applicable to each. when someone is working on an application, do they choose to put it in the Dream section, Magic section, or Hero section? With it's own complete forum, there could be a general app section, etc..
Lets use an example. The Samsung Galaxy. It was the second android phone released. It's a great phone, but because it's not made by HTC, and therefore has no place on XDA, there is no modding community for it at all. A great device (and really the only one with a good amount of internal storage) has no hopes for the modding future because there is no central location for devs to conglomerate. If it was made by HTC, it would have flourished in the modding community simply because it could be discussed and worked on here at XDA.
The main thing, is they're modding Android, not the specific device. Sure each device has it's own quirks, but Android as a whole is what the topic is about. Why limit it to just HTC phones?
So please, if you agree that this will help the android community, vote in the poll, and voice your opinion by posting in this thread.
Well, as I find the proposal fair enough I've voted yes, but I'm not at all convinced about that domain.
If you intend to move devs from this site (which is well known in the android scene) to a new one, and you use as a reason that this was htc specific, you can't possibly try to name the new site droid-developers in direct reference to a motorola phone.
it wasn't used for a motorola reference. android-developers.com is already taken, as is android-devs.com.
If you have any other suggestions for domain names please post them.
Edit: fixed the first post to reflect what i stated here about the name
Are the mods here not going to create a section for this phone?
There will be no section for The Droid, Galaxy, Cliq, Liquid A1, etc.. because they are not HTC phones. XDA is for HTC phones only.

Lol, it's the origins of XDA. Look at all the phones listed on the forum. They're all HTC phones. XDA is another name for an older htc phone. This site was made and is used only for HTC phones.

Because the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 was made by HTC.
How about making an Android section on this forum that has every Android device, HTC or not? Still under the XDA-Developers.com domain though.

That wouldn't work also, as it would make the main site very clustered. the current per phone forum layout is great, and I would hope the new site would maintain the same layout. Each phone definitely needs it's own forum for hardware hacks (like rooting, SPL's, custom ROM's, etc..) but with all Android devices in one place, it's easier for the community to discuss, mod, etc.. from device to device.
you got another yes here. i would like to see all android being supported.
I too would like to see all Android supported. Especially seeings how a lot of the development will apply to most devices.
I personally hope for a new site to offload some traffic. With android coming to more carriers there is bound to be much heavier traffic.
XDA has been invaluable to me since I got my titan a few years back.
As I have been considering the DROID as an upgrade, I would feel much better about that choice knowing it had a great community to support it despite not being an HTC device.
The same could apply to Windows Mobile though. There are great WinMo devices that aren't supported by the xda-dev's. They can only do so much.
I ststed this in another thread. ModMyMoto will have a section for Droid and Cliq. As far as the others Im sure a site such as PPCGeeks will have the other devices covered.
But I wouldnt be chosing a phone based on the presence of a forum. There will always be someone modding a device if it exists, and finding info is easy enough with google.
If all the devices were located on the same forum, you would have all kinds of tardos flashing files to incorrect devices.
If youve been on XDA for a while you know that these conversations come and go. XDA does their thing, they are the big dogs on the block so its not a big deal if it takes another site to fill in the gaps that XDA cant cover.
I post most of my work on alldroid.org because I would like to use that site for software related things and then use XDA for hardware related things for my G1. I think once more non-HTC phones hit the stores there will be a big influx of people looking for a site to mod on and I dont think XDA will be able to support it unless they dramatically change their ways.
Was going through my past subscriptions and I came upon this thread. Oh how the tides have changed
Ahhh this brings back so many memories. It's great to see how much XDA has progressed over the years!

[Q] Will there be a Samsung Prevail Forum?

I was wondering if there will be a Samsung Prevail forum, or space, or area, to just talk about the phone, like there are other places. I love my phone, as derpy and low end it may be, so I would like a place to discuss about it as well. I've searched the site and did not find anything, but I've found all sorts of other forums for similarish phones.
So that's my question. Will there be a Galaxy Prevail forum?
Samsung maintenance service is rubbish...
I have only just started searching but a lot of the stuff on the prevail is from mid 2011 and isn't much up to date. There isn't even an entry in the wiki for this phone. I love my prevail! I'm currently learning development so i'd like to get some stuff on here

Sick of XDA's biasedness.

Well I post this in the Sony Xperia S' forum. But I think it should be addressed here as well. If you're a Samsung fan boy feel free to walk.
Ok folks here's my sentiment about XDA's biasedness towards Samsung. If you're a samsung fan boy feel free to walk.
So the US versions of the Samsung Plasticky s3 have not come out yet and yet there already are forums for them? Sprint Samsung galaxy s3
Verizon Samsung galaxy s3
ATT Samsung galaxy s3.
Tmobile Samsung galaxy s3.
But the Sony Xperia Ion is coming out in the same time and it's the only Sony phone in the US but it does not have a forum? I remember when the international s3 had not come out yet and it had its own forum. What bs is that? I'm not really a Sony fan but I'm so sick of how Android is morphing into a Samsung-only avenue. Why not just rename the forum from XDA developers to XDA Samsung's ass kissers to not mislead newbie Android users? I know I will get warnings and stuff but I dont give a crap anymore.
Update: Excuse for not having a Sony Xperia Ion forum:
As I said here a few days ago:

Mainly because the people involved in those kind of decisions will most likely not see it here.
Not every phone can have a home in XDA.
There are many factors affecting the decision, one of them being interesting and continuous development, this is xda-developers after all.
P, U and Sola are relatively new devices, borderline low-end, middle-end at best, so it could go either way.
You need to be patient and in the meantime, try to make the accomodation of more than one phones under the same section bearable.
It is your responsibility to post in the correct sub-section, provide clear and to-the-point thread titles ("HEEEEEEEELP " "OMG wtf happened to my phone" "???" etc, are NOT acceptable) with tags ([P], , [Sola], ) so that the forums are as clean and helpful as possible.
Thanks!
Ion, even though definitely a high-end phone, is just not that popular at the moment. I do not think XDA favors Samsung, users do, so they render their products popular.
Please make your requests here, keeping in mind that they may or may not be met after all.
Thank you!
Now look at the image attached. I call BS on this.
Yawn.

i dont really agree with your sentiment,
Sammsung has flooded the market with their phones they hit every carrier and every pricepoint so there is gonna be alot more users. the GSIII has been a very highly antisipated phone in fact it may even kick the iphone off its pedestal as the single most popular phone.
i find XDA's coverage of Sony to be exceptional the news feed mentions a Sony related item at least 3 times a week. that is impressive because market share wise sony is almost non existant. The forum is very active for most of the Sony models. way more than i have seen on any other site.
What us sony useres have going for us is the fact that Sony has been very accomodating to the Dev comunity and all we need to do is enjoy it and continue to encourage it.
1. I do not see an ATT, VZW or a Sprint dedicated Galaxy S III forum. Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place? Using xda app and don't see it under forum alphabetical names anywhere.
2. The s3 is the most anticipated Android phone of all time, it has something like 20 million units sold/pre ordered already.
3. WWWWHHHHHAAAAAAAA (baby's cry)

So do you think that just because a manufacturer releases a phone that XDA should open up a new forum for it? Got news for you, XDA is FINITE. Hard decisions have to be made about where to allocate resources. That is why there is a specific thread for this purpose. It is sticky noted to the top of the general XDA-developers.com subforum.
New Device Forum Requests
Perhaps if you can get enough people to request a new forum for your device then the admins will see enough of an audience to warrant allocating those resources.

Sony Xperia Tablet S section?

No Sony Xperia Tablet S dedicated forum? Seems like this device is integrated on the Tablet S section. It has been out since September, had some issues and sold well.

Well posted a comment let´s hope we get a separate Xperia tablet section soon though i think we might get a 4.2 update sooner
There are a few metrics behind adding a new forum mate. The device needs roughly 1,000 hits in the 'Request a New Forum' thread to be added, unless there is an anticipated high demand, such as for US major carrier releases.
Somewhat unfortunately, this puts International and unsubsidised devices at a disadvantage. My best suggestion would be to search for Tablet S in the 'Android Hacking' forum and, if you don't already turn one up. Start a thread to consolidate all the known information about the Tablet S and associated exploits.
If you don't have the 'popularity' for a forum, that doesn't stop you having an awesome one-stop shop thread!
