Help deciding on a new phone - Captivate General

Hello fellow captivate users. I need your help (if you are willing)! I am sick of AT&T's terrible reception (I get no signal at home or at work) and found that with some current offers, I can switch to Verizon free and clear. I cannot decide between the Droid X and the Samsung Fascinate. GPS is not an issue for me (if it gets me in the right city that's good enough). I am running Cognition and am afraid I will miss froyo fiercely if I go to the Fascinate but its users seem pretty dedicated. Anyone care to help me decide? Thanks in advance!

Avoid Samsung like the plague.

A few of my friends have the droid x and they all like it.
Sent from my Captivate

Fascinate will have more internal storage and the amoled screen, so better color.
Droid X has a bigger screen, comes with 2.2 stock and has GPS that works well.
Personally I love my captivate, but I would have gone with the droid X if I had the option.

Thank you to those who responded. I went with the Droid X. I guess I can't easily forgive Samsung for the mistakes they made with the Captivate (Craptastic GPS, and 5-6 month wait for Froyo). Not to mention that it's lame that the Fascinate has to be hacked to put Google search on it instead of stupid Bing.

[Q] Which phone to purchase

Hey guys,
I've been following xda-developers for last few months and it totally rocks.
Now I've been using Sony ericsson w950i (unlocked) until now.
Been thinking of moving to smart phone.
Now I'm confused, I don't care about carrier (though using ATT for now)
Here r choices: 1. Evo 2. DroidX 3. xperia X10
I don't want an iphone and I can't purchase Nexus One (which I would have if I had enough money :-/)
Anyway so here are criteria for phone:
1. Can be rooted, I like cynogenmod and I may hardly use original android
Here r few of my assumptions (PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong)
I can't use proprietary UIs if I put cynogen (it doesn't matter but I wanna confirm)
Evo is my ultimate choice but heard battery sucks (what about spare battery solution ?), How severe is battery issue?
Please feel free to provide ur opinion about other phones as well. I may eventually end up purchasing Evo still I want some experienced opinions
Thanks
Evo is a great phone. It IS starting to get old. Perhaps wait till christmas to see what new phones HTC brings out?
THe X10 is outdated and will most likely only ever see android 2.1 so Id steer clear of it. In fact, I dont intend on buying any more SE phones but thats just me. .
The droid x seems amazing, can be rooted but its quite big in hand (but i suppose youre looking at the EVO so thats similar )
Have you considered the Samsung Galaxy S phones? including the AT&T captivate?
They can be rooted, unlocked, will certainly see cyanogen mod development and because there are sooo many of them around now both locally and internationally (unlike droid x and evo), there will be lots of development for them. Specs wise, they are the top gun.
Personally, id wait a bit and see what comes around the corner. If you still want what youve listed here, youll get a better deal seeing as many will flock to the new devices
Cheers!
I love the Evo. It's my mini tiny PC. Battery wise, well it does juice it up quite much...but then again I am constantly on my fone so I got Ian charges, dock for home, n extra battery as well.

Thanks guys,
As ozy pointed out waiting till Christmas/new year would be best possible option even for me, however don't want to renew my contract with ATT for one year just for that (will certainly look for something though)
And about Samsung phones I'm bit skeptic (fragile and get heated -- well thats 5-6 years back experience, never used it again so I'm not saying they r bad however I'm just being doubtful, though amoled screens r worth checking out)
And thanks anani exactly thats how I'm planning to use (though its on internet forever than on phone) I would appreciate if u can point out battery accessories links
lengthy bump..
If you are happy with AT&T I would get the Captivate. I have an Evo, love it, but my wife gets her phone through work so is stuck with AT&T. She recently upgraded from the Iphone, which she always hated, to the Samsung captivate. I have rooted it (simple compared to the Evo) and done a few mods, got rid of AT&T's market censorship, enabled side loading, and got rid of all the AT&T bloatware, and replaced most of the supplied apps with better ones from the market.
Running it side by side with my Evo I have to say, while I like the Evo better, but it has some advantages. The screen is much better looking, it has slightly more responsive touch input than the Evo, and Touchwiz is a less bloated UI than Sense. On the downside, the only two things I can find to complain about with it is that the bottom buttons are not as responsive as the Evo's, and the GPS on it takes a long time to lock and isn't as sensitive as the Evo's is. I am working on improving the GPS now though with some success. It will also be getting Froyo within the next few weeks, and rumor is the button issue may be addressed with the update.
Overall though, I like the captivate, especially since the phone call quality is really good, it is light weight and seems to be built very well. Also the screen fps isn't capped at 30 fps like the Evo is. If I was on AT&T that is what I would get.
You don't even need to think about it
HTC Desire with OLED mon ...
Thanks wfrandy and seals,
I'm kinda annoyed with at&t network at my place, most of the time I've had complains from friends saying "I tried your phone for whole day" and etc plus I'm not really in for data usage cap. Thats the main reason I'm hanging on my old phone else I could have renewed my contract by now.
But yea Captivate seems nice and Samsung strategy to make phones as open as possible is also tempting.
And about Desire - is it available with any carrier? I thought desire is not available in US market
hmm,
So I've a deal for htc droid incredible, verizon is giving it for free.
What are your reviews? I liked phone the only downside to the phones we were comparing seems to be 3.7" screen and no 4g connectivity
Please let me know if anyone have used the phone
Thanks

Captivate to Inspire 4G

This question is mainly for the former Captivate owners...
I am considering going from the Captivate to the Inspire. I am well aware of the hardware and software differences, so I need not to be schooled there. However, I would like to hear opinions as far as personal experiences go when going from the captivate to the inspire. Also, from a development point of view, the captivate is great because of the high competition and many choices of different custom roms...how promising is the inspire as far as develoment goes? Thanks.
seen your post in the captivate or iphone4 thread earlier, just go get the inspire dude, hands down without doing anything to it is way faster and wya more enjoyable, havent felt like that about a phone since droid x, had captivate 6 months sold on craigslist and got the inspire and not one regret at all. way more polished then cappy for sure. and im pretty sure devolpment is alot bigger then cappys, because inspire is basically desire hd.
I agree. I bought the Captivate back in August. I kept it stock for months and I was disappointed by the was Samsung treated us. Eventually I put Andromeda 1.2 and that made the phone much more enjoyable.
I am much more happy with my Inspire than I ever was with my Captivate. That includes the hard work and great job Team Komin did to make the phone good.

The captivate was nice but nothing like the Inspire.
I got sick of loading new Roms each week just to have it perform.
About the only Rom that worked for me was the cognition, everything else f k ed something up.
You will not be disappointed, this works right out of the box.
I hope I enjoy my inspire as much as you guys do. I should be getting it mon, or tue. Can't wait to give it a try.

Just bought the inspire a few days ago, off contract even, after pissing off my upgrade on a captivate last November.
This phone blows the captivate out of the water.
The difference is just...stunning.
Go get this phone.

Just go for it. You won't regret the change. Running a stock, rooted Inspire. Happy with it as it is right now. Just thankful to not have to flash a new Rom every few days.

Agreed. Went from Iphone 3gs to HTC Aria, to Iphone 4, to captivate (it's sad when a low/mid phone pulls someone away from iOS to Android) to streak to inspire (all since this time last year. yeah i'm a phone whore). Inspire is by far my fav
Inspire runs circles around Captivate, even in stock form.
Sent from a telegraph station somewhere in northern Russia.
I went from a Samsung Captivate to a Motorola Atrix (for a few days) to the Inspire. Samsung Captivate frustrated me to no end, and the Motorola Atrix build quality was just terrible. The Inspire is a great phone with superb build quality, and it's quite snappy to boot. I say go for it!
No offense to the OP, but I think it is time to start discouraging the over abundance of these " what kind of phone should I get " or " what is your opinion of the Inspire, compared to ..........." Again, no offense to anyone, but there are already a ton of these threads. Let's just search or bump one of those and make a Hugh effort to keep this forum uncluttered
Captivate to Inspire is like going from a Mitsubishi Eclipse to a Porsche. HTC is the most developer friendly phone manufacturer on the Android Platform. This phone has been out less than a month and we already have lots of ROM options out there including CM7.
On paper the Captivate is a great phone and it has some specs that are a little better than the Inspire, but the proof isn't on paper it's in actual phone use.
The Inspire is a solid phone with great hardware and a a thriving developer community. Make the move you won't be sorry.

None taken, however I created this thread for a very specific purpose. I am aware of other posts about "what phone should I get." I did look for a thread specifically for this topic and didn't find one. I wanted to see what other captivate owners had to say about going from the captivate to the inspire because an opinion from somebody coming from an iPhone or something else is not going to help.
Anyways, I finally decided to head down to the ATT store and picked one up. Needless to say I am very impressed with the inspire. The salesmen tried to get me to buy the atrix. He said the inspire was not only selling like hotcakes, but it outselling the atrix and said that the atrix isn't selling as good as they thought it would. I told him the deal breaker for me for the atrix was that it has a smaller screen, motoblur UI which I don't like and its not development friendly.

I can tell you this, you will not regret your decision. I can't believe the night and day difference over the Captivate. It is a whole new world.
I loved my Captivate. I love my inspire even more. It's definitely a step up. I'm not one to load roms and such, but I've seen a plethora of custom roms available for it, as well as, heard others speaking of roms.
Via the XDA app for the HTC Inspire
I just got mine three days ago. I cant go back to the cappy now. Harder to root but once done easier to flash roms, and battery life sucks but blows the cappy away lol

I went from a Captivate to an Inspire and have liked it so far minus one major flaw, ROM space. On the Captivate I had loaded TONS of applications, so much so my wife constantly complained that I had too much junk on my phone. But I was testing, playing with new programs and seeing what worked for me. The Inspire has so much less space that when I initially set it up and the market tried to reload all my applications I ran out of space. I had to purge a ton of applications from my list. But since I never used many of these applications it wasn't a major issue.
That being said, I would make this trade every time, this phone is so much nicer and everything just works, including the GPS. I am very happy with the new phone and within a week of getting it I have rooted it, put on a couple tests ROMs, played with them then went back to a rooted stock ROM. So it seems development here is very lively, at least for what I do with my phone which is replace a ROM once in a blue moon. Now I have a captivate to play with as my toy phone and this phone as my work phone. Two phones for only $80 isn't bad (the original Captivate I got in August was essentially free after they rebated me $200 over the months for all the trouble then I upgraded a family line with the Inspire for $80).

The great thing is that with Froyo from the factory, you can use app2sd with no trouble and have quite a bit more apps than you otherwise could with ROM space.

(Q) Best Current Verizon Android Phone

Hey All,
I am a TMo user with a MT4G, but my wife doesn't like TMo and wants a verizon phone. I don't know much about their lineup and was wondering what is the best Android phone for Verizon.
Any help appreciated!
Thanks!!
I would say the Th-bolt
Of course many people may prefer different one, depending on what you really need and daily using ( features).
I'm going to go with the thunderbolt right now. I'm currently on ATT however so I don't really keep up with all the phones. The Arc is coming/ is out on Verizon right? If so, you should definitely look into that.
Amazing design, amazing screen, and an amazing camera. If I weren't planning on getting the Galaxy S 2 (and if i was on Verizon of course) I'd definitely think about picking one up.
Of course the Thunderbolt is a great phone too; if you live in a city where you can get 4G, you should definitely take that into account.
I still think if you can pick up a Droid X, go for it, I know people who will live and die for that phone
I like my Incredible 1 personally, still by far gets the job done.
Thunderbolt may be your best bet for the top of the line though at the moment.
Thunderbolt IMO
Thunderbolt if you're in a 4g area. If not the Incredible 2, while not a huge improvement from the original, looks pretty nice and is coming out soon.
Even if you don't have 4G currently in your area I don't think it will be long so keep that in mind.
Yeah, I say the Thunderbolt also. It's actuallu an HTC Desire HD with slightly altered appearance and is HTC's flagship phone.
I'd see when the Droid Bionic is launching if it still is
Im pretty sure the bionic has been scraped and moto is now gonna focus on the targa as its next flagship phone
I agree with you guys Thunderbolt is definitely the best option as of now
I did forget to mention the Thunderbolt only if you're in an area with 4G or getting it very soon.

[Q] Help me choose a phone + mod (Android)

Hello,
I have always had Blackberry phones (a Pearl and a Tour) and have really enjoyed them. However, in July I will be switching phones, and I think I will get an Android phone. The biggest reason is the app availability is so much higher for the Android devices.
My wife has had the Droid Eris, and just recently got the Droid X. I hate touchscreens, and hated her Eris. However, the X doesn't seem so bad as far as the typing goes. Here is what I am looking for:
1. Has to be available for Verizon.
2. 4G doesn't matter to me at this point.
3. I mostly browse the internet, would love to use Flash. Watching videos would be nice. Big screens are nice too!
4. I would like Gingerbread.
5. I am not afraid of modding/rooting.
6. I tend to put a decent amount of apps on my phone.
Here are the phones available to me in my budget:
Droid 2 Global
Droid X
Samsung Fascinate
Droid Incredible
Battery life, signal strength for 3G, phone speed/power, voice clarity, good speakers, decent camera (still and video) are all big factors.
What do you recommend? I am leaning toward either the Droid X or Samsung Fascinate, and modding it to get rid of the bloatware (and in the case of the Fascinate, have Google be the default search).
What do you recommend? What stable, reliable mod would you recommend me use with that particular phone?
Droid 2 Global: Probably the slowest of the 4 you mentioned. Only recommended if you must have a physical keyboard
Droid X: Great aftermarket accessories and support. Gingerbread in process of being released. Speedy, but lacking in screen capabilities.
Samsung Fascinate: Fastest of the 4 once you root and ROM it. Amazing screen. Great developer community here on XDA
Droid Incredible: Still a good phone, but a little on the old side. With the Dinc2 released, don't expect much more support on the original Dinc.

The D2G has the fastest CPU in terms of clock speed, is it really the slowest?
What do you mean by lacking in screen capabilities for the X?
For the Fascinate, what would you recommend for a ROM?
Id recommend the evo its fast and has a ton of memebers to help u if ur stuck

I would even narrow the 4 phone to only 2. I would either chose between the:
Droid 2 Global (better specs on paper)
Samsung Fascinate (2nd on paper)
Since I don't have any experience on modding an Motorola i will skip that part and leave that to someone who does.
The Samsung Fascinate has a big community on XDA for modding and optimizing your phone. Great mods are MIUI and Cyanogenmod both are able to run on 1.3 Ghz (stable). Als good rom is GingerReal (don't know if its already available for Samsung Fascinate).
Good luck chosing,
Nick
Motorola does have nice feel and build quality, however, the fact that they're locked down really limits what you can do with them if you're the type of person that likes to have control of your device and play with fun root things. I originally had a Droid 2, which was fine, but ended up buying the incredible because of the awesome development community, custom roms, kernels, etc.
I haven't used the fascinate, it seems like it would be kind of so so out of the box, but could be pretty awesome with a custom rom. Another plus of the fascinate would be the super AMOLED screen.
I don't even think Verizon is selling the incredible anymore, they've phased it out in favor of the incredible 2 (ok specs, but locked down), but you could find a pretty good deal on eBay/Craigslist if that's the way you want to go. I love my incredible, only downside is that the battery life could be better, but that can be helped with kernels, underclocking, undervolting, extended batteries and the like.

Motorola's are locked down? In what way? I can get a refurb Incredible pretty cheap through Verizon, but if the Motorola's are limited in some way, I will definitely lean toward the Fascinate!
Motorola locks their bootloader meaning no truly custom roms, kernels, radios, etc. No cyanogenmod on moto. There are "roms", but they're essentially just skinned versions of the official Motorola rom. If you like customizing, the incredible or fascinate will be the best bet.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Samsung Fascinate. I was using it for the longest time before I got the G2x on t mobile and the Nexus S 4g on sprint. The fascinate can be rooted to gingerbread and several other custom rams. It is very fast with that awesome Super Amoled screen. Video streaming and stuff is great as well as the fact that its one of the only Galaxy phones that have a flash.
Great thanks everyone!
Droid 2 is slow due to issues with the RAM used and how it is configured, so I have heard.

I just check with a friend who owns a D2G and he tells me te same. If you really want to mod and customize your phone when stock just doesnt cut it go for the Samsung.
90% leaning toward the Fascinate now...
Fascinate, hands down. amoled screen is amazing, crazy fast, almost impossible to brick. gotta decide on the rom/mod on your own, lots of choices
samsung's is really gud....+1 fascinate
Not to hijack this thread, but what do you guys thing, the DX2 or the Fascinate? I just want a phone that has a nice screen and is fast. I know the DX2 isn't rom-able yet because of the lack of sbf files, but what do you guys think?
I have read stories of people having signal/reception problems with the Fascinate, and they trade them for the DX with much better results...that makes me nervous.
Also, what is the status for Gingerbread for the Fascinate? The Droid X has it...

[Q] Fascinate or Incredible 2??

I just found out the Incredible 2 is in my price range. From what I have been able to find, it has not been rooted yet, whereas the Fascinate has a great community. What would you do in my shoes. I will be purchasing in about a month -(I need a Verizon phone less than $100). This will be my first Android (going from Blackberry). I want it to be a good experience.
Assuming the DInc2 isn't rooted prior to my purchase, what should I get? What are the odds looking like for getting root, Gingerbread ota, or anything like that? I fully intend to have this phone for 2 years.
Thanks!
i would go with the dinc2, but im a huge htc fan.
I have a Mesmerize (fascinate on a different carrier) and I definitely recommend the fassy. The dev community is fantastic. We almost have a fully funtiinal gingerbread cyanogenmod which will be amazing, by the time you get the phone it will definitely be done. It is a phone that will stand up well against newer phones. The dinc is not bad, but as you noted, it hasn't even been rooted. There is no development at all. I've used both phones, and I say, if you want to make your phone awesome on your own, get the fascinate but if you want it to be good out of the box get the dinc.
Sent from my CM7 SCH-i500
Hmm...one vote for each...
if the inc2 is not rooted, i would go with the fascinate. If it is rooted, hands down i would pick the incredible 2 if you plan on rooting and romming it. I loved my original incredible and still use it even though i have moved on. It is a great device. IMO sense is a little better than touchwiz on the fascinate, but that is just me.
Well it isn't rooted yet...so that's the question. I don't know if it ever will be rooted.
I would go with the Incredible 2. The root is coming out soon and plus imo Sense is much better than Touchwiz.
I'd get the incredible 2 in my opinion it has a better camera, more ram , better build quality the only thing fascinate has better is an amoled screen
I like both phones a lot, but I would have to give the edge to the Incredible 2. The only advantage I would take the Fascinate for would be the sALMOED screen. It is truely stunning. But the Incredible 2's screen is also great (any screen on an Android phone would be a giant improvement over a BB screen lets face it). Slightly better specs plus Sense is much better than Touch wiz.
Fascinate........................
Thanks everyone! It looks like the bootloader is just about unlocked for the Incredible 2, so that is what I am going to go with!
Good choice.
