Still looking at the tablets. Part of me wants the biggest screen possible for browsing. But the flip side is the bigger the tablet, the less likely I will be to take it outside the house. How portable is your table and do you wish it was bigger, smaller or is the size just right?
Personally I think 10 inches is just right, I have played with the 7 inch tablets, I think the screen is to small. Anything bigger then 10 wouldn't be portable enough in my opinion, could get bulky too. Maybe if it was 12 and still the same thickness and weight, which will be possible later down the road of course.
For me 10 inches is right in that goldilocks zone. Video looks great at 10, Netflix is awesome.
i had a 7 in Sammy tab and I thought it was the perfect size for holding. The xoom is a little harder to hold in one hand. I guess it all depends on what you prefer to be doing on your device. If your into books and on the go internet emails I'd use 7 inch more. The 10 inch is perfect for movies and spreadsheets documents and big games and such.
i used to think 10" was too big, but then I got a case that didnt suck. My view on 7" is that I may as well just use my phone, which has a 4" and some change screen.
Ditto with the idea of 7 inch tablets for the ebook readers. Personally the 10.1 inch screens are perfect for me. I mean yes, the Xoom is a little heavier than the other Honeycomb tablets, but that's because it was the first of it's kind, but it works for me. I have used a 7 inch tablet before and it was not right for me. 10.1 inch screen sizes are perfect: not too large, but not too small, just right.
The future should bring a tablet with adjustable screen sizes. Lol! That way you wouldn't have to choose one or the other.

Well, I think the Xoom is a bit thicker and heavier (only a bit) because it has more ports and better hardware (cameras, true gps) than some of the others, not so much because it was the first (read older). I have a 7" tegra two tablet and it's really cute, but the Xoom is the one I use, not just daily but constantly.

That's very true indeed. The Xoom is an all out beast no doubt. That's why the newer build of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is thinner and lighter, because they stripped it of more powerful hardware such as the camera for example. The Xoom has a 5MP rear facing camera, meanwhile the Galaxy Tab 10.1 only has a 3MP rear facing camera. And other hardware related things as you mentioned. You are totally correct.
Down the road they will be able to pack all the power and features into a thin light weight device. I'd say with the quad core, 3D, ICS, and high resolution Android tablets and phones on their way... we are closing in on that gap of thin, light weight, extremely powerful devices.

I loved my old 7" for gaming, reading, etc. But it was failing for me on work related items. the 10" lets me read PDF's, type a little easier (still using swype), watch NetFlix in between appointments, etc.
With regards to portability my 7" went into my cargo pocket on my shorts. The Xoom I carry around in a stand/case that looks like a normal paper portfolio which works well and I haven't forgotten it anywhere. I honestly leave the laptop at home with TeamViewer setup and remote in if I need more than the tablet can do.
I wouldnt mind a play with a Flyer or similar just to see how much difference there is between the two..
10 inch is perfect for me, the 7s just feel like a really big phone to me.

Current Xoom size is in the Goldilocks zone for me...I like the form factor, too.
Dont get me wrong, I really like my Xoom, but I also have a DHD so my question would be get a smaller phone and get a smaller tablet so the whole lot is more portable or just stick with the sizes I have..
For a while the size of the Xoom was an issue for me. It simply wasn't "transportable" enough.
I even got one of those cheapo "ePad" 7-inch tablets from Hong Kong just so I could have the tablet experience in a pocketable form factor.
Anyway, the smaller tablet gave up the ghost, and I again began using my Xoom everyday.
The changing seasons has been a BIG help for me. Why? Jackets! I have an off-the-rack coat/jacket and two Scottevest items all with interior pockets big enough to hold my Xoom in the Motorola standard or AYL leather case without issues (and without it looking like I have a tablet in my pocket). Therefore, I can literally carry my Xoom everywhere without a man-bag!

I can't really advise about the phone because my phone is never special to me--just a phone--but the Xoom is really a perfect size. Small enough to carry everywhere and large enough to be really functional.
10" is just right. now, if there's a clam type tablet just like Sony's, then perhaps up to 12"
any more and it would have a very cumbersome surface area once opened.
the weight though cannot exceed the current weight of the xoom. as the xoom is already on the heavy side as it is now.

I have both a 7" tab and the 10" Xoom, and there is not even a comparison! I find myself not even using the 7" tab anymore (and they have all the same apps on)! If you go with the 7" I think you will find yourself wishing you had a 10". (lol)
I like the 10" for gaming because you can see whats under your thumbs while playing but then sometimes games or apps ask you to swipe in the middle or press a button and you have to change your position just for that command ( thats dev problem maybe they think you´re on a 7" screen and can do that swipe without changing your grip).
As a reader the 10" its really great you dont have to zoom the xoom (lol) to see well. i have a 7" huawei and i always have to zoom to read a pdf or a book. But then some readers dont have the change of page via tap and ask you to swipe from one side to another and thats a problem.
Also i find it really hard to type if it isnt in my lap. i got the thumb keyboard app but sometimes i wish there where no buttons in the middle because they are unreacheable (is there an app for something like the courier keyboard prototype from microsoft?) Anyway if you rotate the screen to write like in your phone then prepare to have thumb abs because its heavy in any tablet even the ipad.
First off let me start by saying that I just picked up the Note 10.1 and I love it. However with the Surface Pro right around the corner I am wondering if I should return my Note and wait for the Surface? I realize the the Surface will be a little more money and for the purpose of this thread I would like to leave the price out of it. I would like to focus this discussion on taking notes and comparing the two for that and that ONLY. My primary use is for taking notes by hand with the stylus. Does anyone know if the pen on the Surface Pro will be better then the Note? Is the lag any better? Any other thoughts? Will taking notes using S-Note be better then with OneNote? Again, focusing on note taking with the pen please...

Yes the Surface Pro has a pen input and comes with a pen according to the specification page on Microsoft homepage. I wasn't sure so I looked it up.

Surface pro isn't as portable as the note, it is very thick and large and will cost nearly more than twice the note, for sure windows 8 with android emulators is the best of both worlds (I have an android app emulator on my w8 laptop ) but is case of portability price and functionality I consider the note to be best for it, get surface pro as a laptop replacement not tab replacement, and personally I will go for samsungs ativ smart pro tab it is better in specs, screen and it is samsung

I agree. The touch cover keyboard is quite painful to type on, too. The type cover one is better, but adds too much bulk.
Note 10.1 is still the best.
Op perhaps you should consider a note 2 and a Surface pro? Best of both worlds.
Personally, I'm not impressed with the supposed battery life of the pro. Early suggestions give it around 4-5 hours, though early reports suggest around 2 - 3 IF you are using it for anything other then surfing. Even at 4 - 5 hours I am out. I used to love my x61 with its 5 hour battery life, now though it does my head in after using the note where I get an average 9 hours battery life.

I actually already have the note 2 and its an awesome device IMO. The lag btw that I was referring to is just the delay behind faster strokes which isn't really an issue except to the anal. The size is a concern of the pro, I guess I will just have to hold it and see. I didn't know how the pen on the note works compared to the pro. Are they both using the same digitizer dpi technology? Also I have heard the full version of Onenote is pretty much the holy grail of note taking apps. Hopefully the pro comes out before my note return policy expires.
On anoter note , are there any screen protectors out there I wonder to specifically give the tablet more of a "paper" feel?

I'm not terribly familiar with the Surface Pro, and I'm not too keen on Windows 8.
I do, however, have a Note 10.1, and a convertible tablet laptop, ca. 2008. It came with Windows Vista preinstalled, and I installed Microsoft Onenote.
I can say that, hands down, Onenote is the greatest note-taking application ever. Samsung's S-Note is a like a preschool toy compared to Onenote. I hope S-Note will be improved, but I doubt it will ever be as good as Onenote.
That said, S-Note is... satisfactory.
You are comparing a 450$ tablet with a probably 1000$ dollars PC. If you have the money(you obviously do) and don't mind the increased weight, there is no reason not to get the Surface Pro. You'll have a superior experience in every way.

Better Specs than Surface Pro
I have been running a Samsung Slate with W8 a while now.
Office 2013 with OneNote is superior to SNote and anything in the Android space at the moment.
The biggest drawback is still the power hungry Intel chipset, still even with the latest iterations.
For me for a tablet to be viable it has to have at least 6-8+ hours of battery life in normal operation (inking in OneNote, with good enough backlight on the screen). This is something Intel has not been able to deliver (if one do not con't the Atom, as that has to few horse power to run W8 in my opinion).
So I use the Note for meeting and light inking stuff, and OneNote for all the heavy inking lifting.
Just my 2 cent.
Ok, first things first. Do you want a Surface Pro or a Win8 Tablet? There will be a LOT of Win8 tablets with pens out (in fact, there are a few out now) in a variety of sizes and weights.
There are a few common things though.
ALL Pro tablets are running some kind of x86 processor (Atom, Sandy Bridge, i3, i5...) and ALL of these eat more current because they're more powerful CPUs. That means shorter battery life for the same battery size. They also tend to have higher resolution screens since the best resolution for Win8 is 1366x768, but most Android tablets are 1280x800, so it's not that big a difference and some have 1920x1080 or higher.
Unlike WinRT, you get full access to the desktop and can run all Win7 and Win8 apps.
In terms of price, it's kind of all over the place - the Asus Vivo is $500, for example. My Samsung Slate 7 is a hardware reference platform for Win8 and it's $1000-$1350 depending on the config.

So to flip the question - why a Note 10? Well, for me, it's convenience and compactness. I use the Slate 7 for heavy lifting or complex graphics where I want to use full Photoshop or Painter. But carrying the Slate around is annoying. You need to have a keyboard and a mouse for programming on it. So I have a Golla bag with all of that in it and you're never sure the battery will be charged when you need it. I tend to see the Slate as a VERY portable i5 desktop system - I tend to see the Note as an electronic notebook on steroids. The battery lasts days, I can take notes, draw, watch videos etc.. and it's very seamless. I carry the Note with me everywhere... I don't carry the Slate everywhere.
They're BOTH good, useful devices, but the use patterns are different.

Hello, when my Note PRO 12.2 works, it is quite useful. However, when it fails, it is very bad. One time I fully charged the device in the evening. In the middle of the day, it ran out of power. I could not take photo with a beautiful girl I met. Last week, when I asked somebody to take photo of me and a cute girl, the device rebooted again itself when the guy pressed the camera app button. I also failed to take a few important photos when this malfunction happened. Although somebody pointed out that this might be due to a loose connection problem, it seems to be software related. Why always the camera apps (one built in and another 3rd party)? It seems that when the apps tried to access the camera, the device rebooted.
Anyway, I am considering to move to another platform. How many of you plan to get an iPad PRO, Surface Pro 4 or Pixel C? Due to the camera-reboot issue, I consider to stay away from Android device. Don't know the battery consumption and actual weight of the iPad PRO and Surface Pro 4 yet. I do want cellar phone function and a stylus. Is the Surface Pro 4 my best bet?

It's not beyond the realm of possibility for the loose connection to be such that pushing power requirements beyond a certain point causes stability issues. Like Beut said in the other thread, you could always do a factory reset and then immediately test the camera to see if you regain stability in its use.
As for buying into another platform, you say that you want cell phone function . . Is that even possible with the other options? Highly unlikely with the iPad for sure . .

I did not take many pictures with because i have my note edge and nikon d750 dslr but i did not have any problems with taking pictures with

I don't think that there is any tablet in similar size that can compete with the note pro
Maybe some specs are outdated compares to others but it function very well for me
If they make a new note pro with an amoled screen then i might consider buying it or the samsung view 18.4" if it is released
Mine has never rebooted itself.
Which is a vast improvement over my previous Asus Transformer TF700T... That thing rebooted constantly. (It had some serious I/O issues. Update 3 apps at once and it reboots.).
At any rate, I will certainly consider a Surface Pro 4, on one very vital condition: That it has an Nvidia GPU, as opposed to that IntelHD piece of ****. Anything with an IntelHD isn't worth more than 5 quid.
Edit: The Surface Pro 4 comes with an IntelHD. I will not spend a single euro on such crap.
It seems that the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Note do not have LTE option
Mine too never rebooted, and it is rooted with lollipop. The only problems I had was a couple of reboot stuck at samsung logo while installing applications that required a reboot, such as AD-Away.
Problem solved long pressing the power button and then booting again.
Even the battery still gives me 10 full working hours.
So, I plan to use it until Samsung releases a new comparable device.
A second one, not rooted, as it is in the hands of my daughter and the rest of the family, performs equally well.

Surface Pro 4 is too expensive and Windows applications (and many of it's internal components) do not scale well at high DPI. I had the Yoga Pro 3 (3200x1800) and returned it due to it's bad scaling. I got a laptop in exchange at 17.3" at 1920x1080 and still scaling is bad (not as bad). Windows 8.1/10 at high DPI is not as near as good as Android. So no Windows tablet for me, thank you.
iPad is too closed of a system for me, even for multimedia consumption everything has to go through iTunes, so no.
Pixel C, although a good idea with stock Android is too small compared to NotePRO 12.2, so no.
I' d love a "Pixel C" type of tablet at 12.2" with stock Android for smoothness and fast updates. If you come across one drop me a line.
My current tablet is the SM-P905, Lollipop, rooted (never had blue screens, never had reboots)
Windows tablets are better at productivity and Android tablets are better for consumption. Android fakes productivity way better than Windows tablets fake consumption. With 12" tablets being made chic by Apple it proves the Note 12 was ahead of its time. For me, there's no reason to go anywhere else. With the Pixel C there may be some developer interest in building more/better Android productivity apps that'll only benefit us.
I wanted the surface but battery life and lack of lte are holding me back. I have the 907a.
I was praying that the surface would have at least 10 hours.
I still have hope that Samsung will announce something between 12-13 inches with decent specs and battery life, as dell failed to impress.

Yeah I'm getting a surface pro 4. I'm going to use it mostly for photo and video editing. My note can process raw files OK with photometers r2 but it drains the battery very quickly. Would rather have the fully powered and featured windows machine. Plus I'll run something like bluestockings if I need a few android apps. Not that I use many apps anyways. Mostly lecture notes and the browser.
I'll keep my note pro though. Still trying to get the thing to work properly though....
Just picked up an i7 Surface Pro 4 to replace my Note 12.2.
I have been looking for a replacement for mine (lte on Verizon) because of the poor battery life I have been getting. I need it to last all day. The problem I've found is that there still isn't anything that would be an "upgrade" that would be worth buying. I think I just need to doggie out my battery issue for now.

I have had the note pro 12.3
2 since it came out. As a digital artist it was the best for me. Always being an android lover I stayed away until 3 weeks ago and several months of searching and trying Android and windows tablets and 2 in 1's. It really sucks that android did not continue with evolving the note pro 12.2. Finally after much internal torture I bought the iPad pro 12.9 gen 3 tablet and the Apple pencil. All I can say is wow! Now I'm not going to become an apple convert because I love my note 8 (have no desire to upgrade at this time). But the tablet is phenomenal for digital art and all the basic stuff I used to do on my note pro. The only thing I can't stand on the iPad is the file management system. It's like your personal files are top secret. Android is light-years ahead in that aspect. If Samsung decides to put out a larger more powerful tablet I may go back to Android tablets. I absolutely loved infinite painter. It just blows my mind that they don't even try to compete with apple in the tablet world... But maybe that says something about apple's tablets.
I am not an Apple fan, but I did have an iPad Pro 12.2 LTE with 128 GB. It was a very nice and usable device.
I did not play games on it. I mostly read books, news articles and watched videos. It even had split screen which was nice. Long battery life. I was part of Apple's beta group which got new iOS operating systems before the general public. I never had an issue with the iPad. I am a Samsung devotee. Even though Samsung is terrible at updates and supporting older devices, I still love their products. My Note FE is great. I also do android development, so my Note FE and other devices have custom ROMs. If Apple would install android on their hardware, I would buy in a heartbeat. Or, if they had a developers version of their devices (unlocked, jail broken), I would buy.

I've had my note 3 (n9005) for almost 3 years now and it is has been perfect since then - no issues whatsoever.
I am mainly changing for a bigger screen as I grow tired of watching videos and clips on a 5.7" screen.
That's why I am here to ask for your opinion regarding this matter.
The Mate 8 seems like a natural upgrade as it is quite good - yet not as expensive as the note 5.
Also I'd be happy to get rid of TouchWizz and still have an SDcard slot - pity about the irreplaceable battery though.
I might also miss the stylus and the 4K recording as well, but what can you do.
BUUUT..I feel like the 6 inch mate 8 won't be of any help regarding my request for a bigger screen. These 0.3" might not distinguishable in my opinion.
So I am currently thinking about the 7" X2 and the 8" M2 tablet as they can make calls, have a bigger screen and fingerprint sensors - all the things I want in my new phone.
Unable to make a decision but atleast I know the following:
Mate 8 - flagship and would be the best all-around upgrade for the Note 3
X2 compromise between bigger screen and specs - but realistically the specs aren't way higher than my 3 year old Note 3
M2 going all the way to the biggest phone I could carry in my pockets(very important!) but the specs are still similar to the X2 and the note 3 - also more a tablet than a phablet - not a great camera etc..
What do you guys think?
Should I go with the logical upgrade or go for the main thing that bothers me and on which I put a great weight in all of this - the display size.
I went from note 3 to mate 8. My note 3 had the zerolemon 10k mAh battery, and I can tell you the mate 8 battery doesn't disappoint. Always lasts me the whole day and still got plenty left. This includes playing coc. I think the fast processor in here actually make that game not so battery hungry. Some issues initially with google contacts etc, but everything is fixed without having root. So far I'm very happy. For me I just need to get use to such a slim phone as compared to the note3 with the huge battery.
I have the X2 and the Mate 8. It really depends on what you prefer. I prefer the larger screen on the X2 but it's a little tough to pocket sometimes. The X2 fits in my pocket but you really can't sit down with it in your pocket or else it will bend a little. If you're at a wedding or club or anything like that it's a pain to carry around. It's great at home for anything web browsing or media consumption. My fiance has an M2 it's pretty much a tablet so it's definitely too big to use as a phone unless you're sitting at a desk. The Mate 8 has all the bells and whistles and the fingerprint scanner and having LTE here in the US is beneficial. I'd go with the Mate 8 first at this point. You can always pick up an X2 at a later date as they are inexpensive.
I went from note 5 to mate 8 with no regrets. You can't beat the performance and battery.
I am starting to fall out of love with my tablet. I bought it shortly after launch after seeing it on display while my wife was looking at an Apple tablet. The display blew me away, and the specs were awesome... two + years ago.
The problem that I'm running into, and from my research many others are too, is that there really isn't an "upgrade" to the note pro. I might be willing to go down to a 10" screen, but I like the size. The Pixel C seems like the specs aren't up to what I have now.
So I thought I'd come here and seek the advice of people using the Note Pro 12.2 - what are you considering upgrading to?
I just bought a refurbished one off eBay to replace my original one which has a cracked screen (but still working.) I kept waiting for something new to come out, but finally gave up for now. The finally straw was Samsung coming out with a 12" Windows tablet, but no Android version.
There's nothing spectacular out there on the tablet market to begin with anyways. For now I'm satisfied with my Note Pro. I'd jump on a Surface Pro 4 if handwritten note taking on it were as good as it is with LectureNotes but nothing else comes close.
Thanks, I guess I'll just have to wait and hope for the best to come out. I too was very disappointed to see the windows version come out.

You can get MM on your devices through CM13. But if you have the Verizon variant you get at least LP 5.1.1. http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/56136/P905VVRUBOH1_P905VVZWBOH1_VZW/
I have read a lot about MM, and the battery saving you can get from it, also some claim spotted improvements, but I was just waiting for someone else to take the plunge on the Verizon version!

I've seen pretty much the same myself.
The only options with roughly the same form factor with reasonably close or better specs are the ipad pro and surface pro but neither one is an android tablet.
Really the only option for a true upgrade is to drop to a 10 inch tablet.
The Pixcel C is better specs-wise by quite a large margin in the processor and graphics department and at least equal in most other areas.
The things holding me back there are Screen size (10.2 inch), Aspect ratio (4:3) and from what I've read there are a some software/driver issues (This is likely to be fixed pretty quickly by google for what its worth)
In comparison the Galaxy note has a 12.2 inch screen, a 16:10 aspect ratio and against popular opinion, I'm pretty fond of the extra features in touchwiz.
but if you can deal with the smaller screen and 4:3 aspect ratio the pixel C is really the only solid upgrade I've found.
for me I decided I'm sticking with this tablet for the foreseeable future, its great with the right peripherals and gets everything I need done and the snapdragon 800 keeps up pretty well at this point.

I had hopes for the 18.4" Galaxy View, but that turned out to be a bigger joke than an iPad.
(No, seriously, it has a 1080p res on an 18" screen, 5700 mAh, 2GB RAM and a 1.6 GHz CPU. Useless.)
The Surface Pro 4 sounded very interesting at first, when the rumours mentioned an Nvidia GPU. Turns out is has an IntelHD, which means I can't use it properly and thus isn't worth the money. If I have to spend 2000 quid on a "laptop replacement" tablet, I bloody well want to be able to run Mass Effect 3 on it. It has all the specs to run it, except for that horrendously massive bottleneck of a GPU.
Ipad... No, just no.
Everything else either has a low resolution, too small a screen, too low RAM, too low CPU or a ****ty GPU. And no Spen. (And yes, as a designer I use that pen. A lot. Hell, you can even use it as a Wacom tablet for your PC with a simple app.)
So no, nothing worth upgrading to.

The other problem (other then drop in size) I had with that is almost all the tablets are dropping LTE. I really like the flexibility that LTE provides when traveling - using in a car, avoiding hotel wifi charges or slow speed, etc.
Thank you everyone for your responses. It seems that you have all confirmed my fears: that besides the Pixel, which doesn't have the s-pen, I am just going to have to live with what I have for now.
