I had been running cognition 2.2 beta1, put phone into download mode using vol up vol down and put in usb cord and flashed back to stock. Then I flashed Shep211's JPM\JI6 ROM via rom manager. Reflashed a JI6 kernel, then tried to use rom manager to flash to cognition 2.2 beta7. The update failed and now I only get the phone exclamation computer screen and I cannot get my phone back into download mode! I have tried almost every combination of vol up vol down power and usb I can think of to no avail. Can anyone at XDA help before I return the phone to ATT?
Any help is greatly appreciated!!
Pull battery. Just keep trying to get into dl mode. That's all I think you can do.

Have you tried doing it via the SDK? Really easy that way.

through ADB you mean?
I just get error - device not found whenever I try and run any adb command.
Yes, I had to do the "adb reboot download" with the SDK running.

can you be more specific? I can't get adb to recognize this phone in its current state.
1- Pull battery and USB cable out..
2- Press Vol Up while you connect your phone to the USB
3- Insert battery, and keep pressing Vol Up!!!
or
1- Pull battery and USB cable out..
2- Press Vol Down while you connect your phone to the USB
3- Insert battery, and keep pressing Vol Down!!!
or
1- Pull battery and USB cable out..
2- Press Vol Up while you connect your phone to the USB
3- Insert battery and, keep presing Vol Up, press the Power button..
Keep pressing Vol keys means that you must keep pressing the buttons until you get the Download Mode Screen.. And keep trying.. Sometimes it take some time to work..
What I did was download and install the SDK in the C:\Android directory
Then open a windows command prompt and navigate to the "Tools" directory
Then just run the adb command.
Not sure what to tell you if the phone isn't recognized, I'm pretty new at this myself. I'd start hitting Google.
Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions, I tried these all several times, waiting about 1 minute before I gave up each time. Should I wait longer, or do you have any other suggestions? I'm about ready to give up and make a trip to AT&T

I've tried all of the suggestions in this thread already, I have somehow managed to completely brick this thing. Thanks for all of your help!
If you were going to Cog 2.2.7, why wouldn't you just have wiped, flashed to stock, rooted and then flashed with Clockwork Recovery?
Anyway, good luck.
-Did you try to start pressing the Vol button AFTER you plug the USB cable? And before you plug it?
-Did you try another USB port or another PC?
Here is the Fix
I was in this same situation last week. Here is how to get it back into download mode.
•Be sure the Samsung USB drivers for the phone are installed on your computer.
•Remove and replace the battery.
•Connect the phone to the computer with the USB cable. The "phone-exclamation mark-computer" picture should display on the phone's screen.
•Hold the Volume Up+Volume Down+Power buttons down simultaneously. The screen should go blank, then the picture should appear again. When the screen goes blank a second time, release the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume Up+Volume Down buttons down

This is the only method that consistently works for me. I use the exact same method. The key is whatever picture (att, battery charge, etc....) comes up the second time and then goes blank, then release the power button.

Thanks for the suggestions, I really do appreciate them. I just tried this a few times but still no avail. I tried it with two computers just to be sure and still nothing. I guess I really have bricked the seemingly unbrickable phone
Have you tried Odin3?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I have seen this asked quite a bit around here lately. Thought I would put this out there for reference. Let me know if you have better ways/I have it totally wrong.
FIRST METHOD (easiest/most common)
1) Power phone off
2) Plug USB into computer
3) Hold vol up + vol down
4) Plug USB into phone while still holding the vol up and vol down
5) Yellow /_\ (triangle, Downloading, Andy shoveling, Do not turn off Target!!! symbol)
Your now in Download mode
SECOND METHOD
1) Power phone off
2) Plug USB into Computer
3) Plug microUSB into phone
4) Hold pwr + vol up + vol down
5) When Batt icon goes away, release pwr, still holding vol up + vol down
6) Yellow /_\ (triangle, Downloading, Andy shoveling, Do not turn off Target!!! symbol)
You should now be in Download mode.
THIRD METHOD
1) Power phone off
2) Pull battery out
3) Hold vol up + vol down
4) While holding vol up + vol down, plug in USB cable into the phone
5) While still holding vol up + vol down, put battery back in
6) Yellow /_\ (triangle, Downloading, Andy shoveling, Do not turn off Target!!! symbol)
You should now be in Download mode.
FOURTH METHOD (adb)
1) Enable debugging on your phone (Menu>Settings>Applications>Development>)
2) With phone on, plug USB into computer and phone
3) Open cmd
4) Type in "adb devices" (not totally necessary, but I always do it just to make sure everything is good), making sure it recognizes your device
5) Type in "adb reboot download"
6) Yellow /_\ (triangle, Downloading, Andy shoveling, Do not turn off Target!!! symbol)
You should now be in Download mode.
If you have CERTAIN GB bootloaders it changes the the way you access download and recovery.
Download mode = vol down + pwr (NOT - vol up + vol down + pwr)
Recovery = vol up + pwr (NOT - vol up + vol down + pwr)
Like I said, let me know if any of this should be changed.
*Edit- Changed steps 4 & 5 in "THIRD METHOD", per comments.
Perfect
the first method worked for me
For the 3rd method I plug in the usb cable first, then push both volume keys, then put battery back in while holding both volume keys.
Great guide, thanks!
ive got a bricked phone that doesnt even respond to the USB jig... and still none of these work for my "phone--!--comp" screen
Does odin recognize it? In most cases you can still flash odin on that screen.
not sure if you got yours fixed. If you can see your phone + !+ comp then it's not a full brick. Jig should work, it worked for me today.
I got this, what do I do next? I keep getting message "SIM network unlock PIN". I have tried everything I find in this site, only to be dazed...I have two SamsungS Vibrant's and I got one to work just fine...it's the second that has gotten the better of me...HELP, please and THANK YOU
4th method should be
open cmd then
cd/
cd androidsdk
cd tools
adb devices (to make sure its connected)
adb reboot download

I tried all these methods after updating to 2.3.4 and can not get back into the download mode. Any suggestions please? Thanks in advance.
Hold volume down + up and insert usb while phone is off
I did that. It didn't work.
EDIT:
I evidently did it wrong. It worked the last time I tried. Thanks
i'm on 2.3.3 and am having this issue with not being able to get back into download mode anymore or recovery mode. tried every combination and all four mentioned in another thread. is there another way to flash a rom without being in download mode? can i just do it straight from odin after plugging it in?
mine didnt seem to work with any of those but i saw a video based on the epic by holding down the #"1" button on the key pad and the power button takes you to download mode ,and it worked for me
It Works
Volume down + Power..It works Thanks!!
But am still stuck with bad IMEI ..
omg!
thank you so much! it worked for me. but my imei is still null . and wont read my sim card. any of them this happened after i tried to unlock it . does any one know how to fix it? ive used odin and flashed the stock rom still didnt work. ive upraded it to 2.3.3 still didnt work. idk what the deal is . but it wont work. can any one help me with this? i have a galaxy s 4g for tmobile. it keeps saying searching at the top
What I do, is take the battery out, put the battery in, plug in the usb, take the battery out, volume up down up down up down up down, unplug usb, take out the battery, take the dog for a walk, put the battery back in, hold down the volume keys, then plug it in, and it works!
jk, great guide. much thanks
Hi,
I have an Samsung Nexus S [not rooted] with a broken power button (stopped working after I updated to ICS). So for a couple of months, I was using the "pull batter" trick to power on and off my phone.
Now I am stuck in a bootloop and I can't seem to get out of it, despite howmany time i try to pull out the battery.
I manage to enter into the fastoboot mode screen, but then my volume buttons won't work and I can't scroll up and down the menu.
Is there a way out? I am really a noob at this and haven't rooted an android phone before. Please help!
Thanks
i think the best think is to unlock the bootloader and doing that it will prompt to you asking for erasing all your phone (sdcard included), maybe this hard factory reset will help you bcz like that ur phone will be back to stock ics.
to unlock your bootloader (wich is the first step to root, if u want to) do this:
download this (the entire nexusrootics folder): https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B7O2O1p4iWXTWWxha0pUcXNud2s
put the folder on the root of your hard drive of your pc (for example mine is C:\)
then install the drivers (wich are in the downloaded folder), so plug your phone go to driver management and choose to select the fiolder and select the usb_driver and choose ADB... (first one)
then click windows button+ R and type "cmd" (no "")
now type "cd.." (no "") to go back to the root of your hard drive and type cd (name of the downloaded folder)
now type "adb devices"; if a number appears it means that your drivers are well installed
after that, type "fastboot oem unlock"
on your nexus a question will appear to ask your if your are sure to erase all your content, use the volume lockers to say yes. (if your volume buttons dont work here i think u are stuck)
NOW YOUR PHONE SHOULD BE BACK TO STOCK, WITH THE BOOTLAODER UNLOCK BUT NOT ROOTED so it's safe for warranty issues
please click the thanks button
---------- Post added at 07:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:05 PM ----------
if you want i can make a video and send to you
respond to me by mail: [email protected]
to lock it back just type "fastboot oem lock"
I got the same problem, yesterday the power button was not functioning properly. And after a couple of battery pulls, I can't start the phone unless I put a usb cable in. The phone starts but it is stuck in bootscreen. If I hold volume up button and connect usb cable + put the battery back in I can get into bootloader (Rooted and unlocked) but I can't navigate in boot screen with volume up or down, and pressing power button does nothing, which btw is clicking when pressed as usual.
I think the powerbutton is continuously pressed, and thats why I can't navigate or execute any commands in bootloader.
Any help to this problem would be appriciated, since I'm working abroad and using this phone as gps here and have no backup phone at the moment.

Can't backup even through clockwork Rom Manager mod, because when in recovery the power button might be interfering with the scripted backup....

I'm in the exact same boat. What the hell did Samsung make the power button with??? Mine died on me barely 6 months after purchase of the phone. It's pretty pathetic.
I would like to know how am I able to browse bootloader screen if my power button is dead??
Mine did the exact same thing, I was online chat with Samsung for warranty and all of a sudden the volume buttons started working in fast boot...and amazingly I pressed power after select recovery and it works...right before the volume buttons "unlocked " , I was kinda tapping on the power button trying to get it to do anything, then I saw the USB init and whatnot

I can get to download mode using the volume buttons only.
Is there a way to do a normal reboot without power button??
If you can use adb, the command below should work...
Code:
adb reboot
Or you can refer to this for more adb commands that can help you...

My Galaxy S3 just faced the bootloop issue because of a faulty power button. I had CM12 installed, so couldn't use warranty. I opened up the phone, and cut the power switch off with a razor blade. Now, I can boot to download mode using the volume and home buttons while plugged in, and cancel download mode to boot phone. My issue is that I experienced a huge battery drain on a ROM, and dirty-flashed another ROM over it. Now, the phone won't boot. I'd like to go back to CM11, but can't figure out how to boot to recovery. Thus, this is what I need:
A way get to recovery, without using a power button, or booting up the phone

If you can boot to download mode, you can get to recovery mode. Here's how. I figured this out when my power button broke and I removed the power switch from the phone's motherboard, so it should work for you:
1. Take the battery out of the phone and unplug it from USB power.
2. Plug in USB power.
3. While holding down the volume-down button and the Home button, insert the battery (this is a little tricky).
4. The phone should start and warn you that you are entering Download mode.
5. Press Volume Down to reboot and then *immediately* push and hold Volume Up and Home simultaneously. The phone should reboot into recovery. Mine does.

Yes - thank you very much! FYI - when I read @Jacquestrapp 's instructions, I suspected the battery gymnastics wouldn't be needed since I had already learned (in this informative video) that I could boot the phone from a powered-off state WITH THE BATTERY INSTALLED by plugging in USB power and immediately depressing home and vol-down. This gets you to step #4 above, and proceed from there.
So this is cool! My trusty-old d2vzw's power button had stuck in the "On" position last September as they apparently tend to do, so I set it aside as a brick and bought a used HTC One m7. Needing a WiFi skype device for a friend, I searched and read about scraping off the S3's power button and operating without one. Now, I see how much I missed the S3's AMOLED display colors and contrast compared to the 1080p display on the m7, and I'm reluctant to part with the S3 .
Help - when pressing volume down it does not reboot.
I9300. could there be a difference in different regions?
edit: volume down switch (not the plastic bit, the hardware connectors) was a bit flimsy so I had it replaced. Still not working though.
I read the instructions wrong. I was using a USB jig to directly boot into download mode. But I need to get to the prompt before it. However, when following the steps the phone just begins charging instead.

Boot the phone, when it gets to the unlock screen try connecting it to PC and open an adb terminal then type:
adb devices(press enter, if it returns a serial number your device is recognized)
Then type:
adb reboot recovery
Or
adb reboot bootloader
Try unlocking it and typing the reboot commands while it is frozen.
Or you can order a USB jig for $5 US or less from eBay.
Or you can use an old USB cord and a 300k resistor(or any combination of resistors equaling no more and no less than 300k) to make your own jig, there are videos on YouTube for making your own jig.

I don't know if you are been cheeky or not, but I will go check if I can actually touch the option. Lol.
In case I can't what ROM can I install via Odin that will give me touch recovery. Or what other options do I have?
I really don't want to take it apart again to remove the plastic button so I can short the power leads with a wire to mimic a power button press.
