Should I go for Desire HD or wait for the released of the next best? (UK resident) - General Topics

Guys... Im in a huge dilemma. My contract ended and it's time for me to sign another phone contract. But I have to either go for HTC Desire HD (which is current best phone in the UK market) or wait for other better android phone (e.g. T-mobile mytouch HD which has got front camera).
Open for comments and suggestions. Thank you very much in advance

wait for nexus s or samsung flipside

If you like the phone, get it... basically if you say that you'll pass and wait for another phone coming out, once that phone comes out you'll hear about a more awesome phone coming out. Just like computer hardware, the cycle is endless.
Also the DesireHD is a pretty nice phone.

Im in the same boat as you. I decided to wait for nexus s, there are just to many good phones coming out at the end of year/begining next that will leave curent generation far behind

Wow.. I havent heard of Nexus S before. As long as any better phone release I will sign a contract for it =)

Dude you are the one that is going to be using the phone. You know what you are going to use the phone for. You know what features you want and what you do not want on your phone. You have access to the internet and can research current and upcoming phones just as easily as anyone else can.
My point here is that it's your phone, get what YOU want. I understand you are just trying to make conversation on the boards or whatever but at the end of the day we can't really help you here. We are not going to be using the phone and everyone of us uses our phone differently than the person beside us.
Get what YOU want and I promise that YOU will be happy with YOUR phone.
And please dont flame me in a response, I'm not trying to cut you down or anything here. I'm only trying to help you help your self man.

I understand what are u trying to say. But here we are, most of us like the best phone, regardless what we use it for, how we use it. Im just like other ppl, who are looking for upcoming yet unknown phone provided it must be better than the current best phone desire hd. That's my point. Dont ask ppl what u want and how u want to use it, this is modern city life, ppl wont just want a phone that can make phone calls, text, internet. We want all rounded best phone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A best phone released is used to get out of time,so dont care too much about it!If you like it,go get it!

You should get what you want, but for a keyboard-less device you'd be crazy not to wait for the Nexus S. Just my humble opinion.

Agreed with the majority, I was this close to upgrading my contract with T-Mobile UK
I decided to wait after hearing about the next crop of dual core smartphones to hit the market early next year! Till then I have my beloved Hero and will be more than happy to use that till then!
I understand the cycle of "something newer every 6 months" but the Desire HD is the last hurrah for the current crop of smartphones running the single core snapdragon. Awesome phone but I shall wait till the dual cores start rolling out..

That's it. Spot on. But we will have to wait till febraury next year =(.
Btw are u sure it has a keypad?

Some advice please.

Hey guys, I'm having a bit of trouble deciding what phone I should get.
I really like the HD2 as far as having the huge screen and it's definitely a big plus, however Windows Mobile and it's upcoming demise is a turn off. Now I know that there are people working on porting Android to the HD2, and that's something I'm really looking forward to.
The obvious alternative would be the EVO 4G, but as I'm from England, I'm never going to get one that works over here.
The other possible alternatives in my eyes are either take a hit on screen size and go for the Desire, or wait for the Droid X. My gripe with the Droid X is that Motorola is a huge turn off for me, I've had a LOT of bad experiences with Motorola products, and I just don't trust the company.
As I'm guessing some of you can tell by now, I pretty much want a HTC phone, as I'm not so keen on any other manufacturers apart from Nokia (who don't have the kind of phone I would like anyway)
So with all this said, would you either...
A) Get a HD2, use some of the amazing custom WM roms on here and wait until a fully working and full speed Android port is available?
B) Go for the Desire and take a hit on screen size, but gain all the advantages of Android?
OR
C) Wait for a while and see if something good appears around Christmas this year and make my purchase then?
Hope I haven't left anything out, budget doesn't come into it so much as I just want some ideas.
Thanks in advance.
If you are not in a rush and can wait till December wait!
If you hardly need it now go for leo definitely!
Yeah, it all depends on how long I can stand using this stupid Samsung Jet, without throwing it in the bin.
The thing with technology is that no matter how long you wait, a few months after that there'd probably be a better spec phone. So buy one when you need one. =)

Yeah, I realize that, I was more just intrigued as to whether there might be another big screen HTC phone on the horizon.

Ooh, I'm VERY interested in that! Thanks for the link, any news on release date?

Question: Change my Android device?

I Currently have a Samsung Galaxy Spica (Quite crappy if you ask me, but nice for the first android device i have)
I might have an opportunity to get a HTC Desire, but that would "chain" me to a mobile phone company for the next 18 months....
I know the improvement is quite nice.... but I know Desire has been in the market for some time already... so, my question is:
Is it worth to change to HTC desire, to not being able to change phone for another year and a half
OR
Better wait for a couple of months for some newer device, since HTC desire is quite "old" (Still better than Spica, definitely)
Well, more or less, what would your advice be?
Thank you!!
The Desire S is coming very soon with Gingerbread installed. Worth the wait for sure.
Or there's already the Desire HD or Incredible S on the market, both of which are better-specced than either the original Desire or the Desire S.
Then again, if you're worried about your phone being obsolete, you could skip HTC altogether and go for one of the new dual-core handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S2, Motorola Atrix or the two LG Optimus models, the 2X and 3D.
All of those will be a step up from anything HTC have announced to date.
Yes, the point is that this HTC desire is a special offer from a national carrier which gives you a htc desire for a really low cost (less than 100 euro), and has no internet contract (Its your choice to get it or not) and a really nice price for the calls and so...
The point is that i dont want to spend 600 euro on a new phone... hell, i dont want to even spend 200...... they get obsolete too soon...
The Desire is a great phone. I say go for it!
Then customise it with CM7
Yes, my current SPICA hardly has CM 6.1... the drivers are hardly finished, the community around the development are wonderful people and they do a great effort, but are too few..... we even dont have DivX working, and games like angry birds or thunder race are not working properly....
I will try to get my hands on one Desire, hoping they wont stop supporting it for the next 18 months.... I will keep my fingers crossed.
Thanks for the advise!
The desire is a very sturdy, trustworthy device, I've tried many different devices and can't manage to pull myself away from it
Even so, it might be better to wait around, maybe get a dual core phone since you'll be stuck in contract for a while. It should still be supported by the community for a while yet, but newer phones will start getting the updates first soon, as they'll be better suited for it, and dev's will be upgrading.
If you always have an itch to upgrade, then it'd be best to wait, but either way there's always going to be new phones coming out with better hardware/software.

And?
You say you don't want to spend even a couple of hundred euros on a phone because they become obsolete so quickly.
The Desire is basically obsolete already - at least as obsolete as any of the new dual-core phones will be in 9-12 months, probably more-so, relatively speaking.
It's obviously down to you, if you're not prepared to spend what it takes to get a newer phone, then I think you've answered your own question.

Best out?

Hi I am looking at getting a new phone currently I have a htc desire and it made me fall in love with android because with my desire I rooted and flashed custom roms.
Which phone would you suggest I go for that is either out at the min or is soon to be released.
It must be android in order to compete with my desire
Thanks for your opinions

I too am currently looking for an android phone.
I was pretty much sure I was going to get the Thunderbolt or Evo depending on if Verizon would match Sprint's current bonus minutes offer. But now I've been reading about other phones (LG G2x, EVO 3D coming soon...) and new developments such as dual core processors, etc... and I'm thinking maybe I should wait.
Depends what your budget is. Galaxy S II seems a favorite.
I think it'd be a good idea to think of what you want and then we could make some suggestions... I'm hoping for the Droid Pro II (eventually) but that's because I like keys and don't mind the smaller screen.

Since the OP hasn't been back I won't feel bad hijacking this thread.
Looks like now I'm deciding between the Galaxy S II and the Evo 3D.
Since the GS2 is going to be open source, does that mean we will probably be able to put HTC Sense 3.0 on the GS2? I really wanted an HTC and I like their UI but I think I'd rather have the better camera than 3D.
Is there another HTC phone that will compare with the GS2? Also, I read Samsung is bad about updating, but if I'm rooting and flashing a new ROM that is moot, right? The devs will update ROMS here and I can grab those, right?
It's really more phone than I think I need but I've had mine for almost a year past my contract expiring so I'm not someone who needs to replace my phone asap, I will probably live with new phone for 3-4 years. And I don't mind waiting a few more months for price drop and devs to do their thing. So I'd like to future proof it a little bit even if it costs a bit more right now, I think.
Or I get the Thunderbolt right now but it seems like I should go to dual processors and 1gb ram for future OS updates but that is kind of guessing on my part based on what I've been reading the past few days.
I'm going to use it mostly for phone, texts, email, music and internet browsing. Then once I learn more about the android apps I'd like to integrate it with my home AV system as much as possible. I'm coming from a dumbphone that I dropped my data plan for so it's just calls and texts and casual pic taking right now. Kind of excited to get a smartphone.

[Solved] One X EU Roms.. On ATT One X?

I stumbled upon my target store and decided why not; i want something better than my x10 Sony Ericsson. On their store computer I came through here also seeing all these amazing roms. However my question is, Will the EU One X-Roms be easily compatible with the AT&T version? Due to different hardware I wouldn't think it would take long to port between EU and AT&T's. But I have layed out my pre-order in store for it and I can pick it up sunday night *does a little dance*, But i'm a flash-a-holic so... If the roms won't be easily ported [if at all] I may go back and swap to the Atrix and get the little laptop-dock on it. I'd prefer the best I can get, And I really like the look of the One X. Not if It wont gain much activity fast on here right away though.
Maybe a att rom will be better than a eu rom...
Just wait and see to see what the devs cook up..
They're not cross compatible but I would imagine porting wouldn't be too hard.
Really, that impatient? lol
To answer your question, no, you can't use "EU" (International) ROMs on your LTE One X. As for how easy they will be to port, that depends on the dev doing the work!
But seriously, the LTE One X hasn't been officially released in the US yet, so not many people have it. On May 6th, the flood gates will open and we'll have plenty of ROMs. I'm sure you can make it without flashing until then
Well I would expect that there be little->no activity for the phone since it isn't out yet. But seeing as I got my main question answered; The next one probably has an easy-to-guess answer.. Is there going to be a lot of activity on it?
I'm assuming yes. I mean, my x10 still has dev's working hard at it. In the tech world, its falling behind. Yet they're still there. Plus all these replies in only a short amount of time tells me I'm not the only one who's interested in the phone . Only reason I suggested the Atrix 4G is simply, I need a cheapish laptop because my last one just gave out. Probably due to a liter of soda but that's besides the point... I saw the One X, The specs amazed me. I saw the Atrix, wasn't amazed. But the dock for it is what caught my attention. Thinking ahead however, It's probably a dumb idea to "downgrade" to another phone just because of an accessory for it. I'll probably stick with my pre-order for the One X, Simply due to the quick response from the community about this :b.

And there's your answer. Look how active this forum is, and the phone isn't even out in the US for another week lol
There will be a ton of buzz around this phone once it's actually out, you'll see.

Scream @ HTC on their FB page for an update!

This was a good idea (however fruitless it may turn out to be) that I stole from the Galaxy 7.7 forum.

Honestly I don't think anyone would care whether it was ICS or Jelly Bean at this point, but the phone desperately needs an update to the stock ROM. Would be nice if we could get at least ICS with Sense 4!
Not gonna work

There might (just might) be an update coming from HTC at some point. One of the gov't agencies (can't remember if it was FTC or FCC) ruled against HTC last month in a major case. The result is that HTC will have to update a LOT of older phones in order to comply with the ruling. There were rumors that HTC had been working on an ICS update for our phone but ceased work due to budget issues. So, to comply with the gov't ruling, they might resume work on what they've done and release the update. Or, they could just release some lame-ass patch just to comply. But, regardless, there will probably be some sort of update coming from HTC/T-Mobile for this phone in the coming months.
EDIT: It was the FTC, here is the ruling: http://ftc.gov/opa/2013/02/htc.shtm

Done; and answer.....from HTC USA
HTC USA Sorry, .... The MyTouch 4g Slide will not be upgraded to ICS.
maybe more post on their side will change something...((
P.S I'm very fu. angry because there is nothing good / new with slide keyb, and, despite the fact that this equipment has a good performance, they do not want to update it, but it does not give anything with slide. ahhhh!!!!!
HTC deserve all the spam for not updating this device. Its all their fault because they didn't market it as a high end device which it is. And also failed to release an international version. The DS is a great device and still deserves more from HTC
We ALL understand your frustrations. But I'm afraid this flagship has already sailed. This is really a Sensation with a slideout KB and look what they've done for it. But really the only thing that big companies like HTC pay any attention to is marketshare. You know....their own bottom line.
Do what you will but when the time comes, I'm taking my business elsewhere. When they finally figure out that people are sick of being taken in on a worthy $500 phone by sending it out with a big hole in the hull & they all know it's sinking they MAY rethink their business model. But until that happens I'd love to see them have to name the next "biggie" they put out the Titanic.
Maybe they will see then that THEY weren't sunk by an iceberg but by a little ole Ice Cream Sandwich. KWIM?

I'm definitely NOT buying HTC anymore. They suckered me in twice, on this phone and a Flyer tablet. Never again. And I think a lot of people feel the same way, HTC is sinking, their sales are in the toilet, nobody is buying their stuff.

I'm definitely in agreement here, and it seems that a lot of us share the same feelings ever since HTC and Tmo decided to pretend our phone never happened. I only found out about the phone because it was an insurance replacement for my g2, which apparently wasn't available at all for replacement (refurb or not). I hadn't heard anything about the MT4GS, and the phone had released about a week prior to my swap, which goes to show you how Tmo dropped the ball on marketing. I will say that it was a marked improvement over the g2 and that i've enjoyed my time with it for the most part. However, even bone stock I would get random soft reboots and other quirks that generally went away once I rooted and rom'd.
It wound up being my third HTC phone in a row, and probably my last for some time because of the way we got treated on this device. Not to mention their current lineup (minus DNA) is pretty meh. A friend has a One X that I've had some time on, which is a pretty cool phone mind you, but not that impressive. I guess I'm going to take business to Samsung for the next one, as they irk me the least out of the android OEMs these days. I'd jump on an N4, but the whole cloud thing doesn't go over too well when you don't have consistent 4g or wifi all the time. Unfortunately, New England's geography wreaks havoc on signal in a lot of places and reliance on cloud storage just isn't ideal. Locally stored files ftw.
At the time, the official excuse for our device not getting updated was something about user experience and not working out to expectations, but as we all know that is a load of bull, since the devs here have pulled out the stops in keeping the device up to date. Granted not everything works 100% on these roms, without any source we're doing pretty darn good in this corner and there are no complaints from me about their hard work. Members of this community (and beyond) have attempted to get HTC to budge to no avail... about a year ago. There's no hope at this point of any official anything. And that sucks.
As an aside, has anyone else noticed how visually similar our mysense and sense 4 are? I definitely remember seeing the sense 4 launcher when it first dropped on a few phones and thinking that it looked a lot like our stock one.
I tried not to wall of text but I can't help it. Sorry guys and gals.
I've been looking at the Sony phones. For many years, I never considered anything Sony (after their rootkit fiasco), but that was a long time ago and I do believe their corporate policies are not as draconian. For their Android phones, they're putting out some really nice hardware and they are UPDATING them regularly. Even some of their older stuff is getting updates to JB. And their build quality is markedly better than Samsung. The Nexus phones are probably my primary interest because I'm just tired of hoping for updates. But, I'll probably wait until the next Nexus as I'm just not blown over by the Nexus 4.

With only chatter about what the next Nexus "might" be I'll stick with my Nexus 4. There is not.... Let me say that again while I still can...there is not a faster device out there. Yeah of course some have huge screens and huge 6k mah batteries but they still can't keep up.
I don't keep much on my phone so I rock the 8GB with zero issues.

If the leaks of the SG4 are real, it's just a huge honkin phone/mini Note 3. I don't WANT a giant screen held to my face, and when I want to watch a movie or do some power browsing I have a TABLET for that.
