So, I've been debating on whether or not i should take the plunge and root my Hero for the past couple weeks. It does scare me, as i cannot afford to brick my phone, recently i have heard of unrevoked, which put me at ease a bit more. As for rooting i do have a few questions, I've been looking around at other sites at the pros and cons..but cannot find an updated write up of all the things i can do and the little must have programs after rooting. I love my hero, tho it is getting slow. the app2sd interests me quite a bit. I don't think id use the tethering much as i only have a 500mb cap on my data. I do not know code..have tried Linux with great failure lol. With that being said, do i have to know code to be able to do anything with a rooted hero? Can i go back to normal if it doesn't work out?
I am new to all this, so i apologize for my ignorance. Flame on!
I have been a loyal HTC owner since 07 and a member here since 08 (i believe, lol). As you all can see I rarely post anything. I do however have a good reason... Everybody says search before you ask. So i did and always find the answer, every time. Sometimes it takes a bit of work but I find the answer.
It is just now that I started posting because I believe I graduated from super Noob to quasi Noob. I have flashed, installed, bricked, recovered bricked, and tweeked all my phones and finely believe that I have something to contribute.
Anyways I started this thread to simply say Thank You...
Thank you to all the members, moderators, developers, cooks, and everybody else. It is because of everybody here that we are able to take cutting edge and bend it to out will. It is because of you all that we are able to reflect who we are though electronic style, much like a hot rod designer or fashion designer.
Again THANK YOU and keep it up!!!
x2 from another quasi-noob (Though I have not bricked a phone...)
You are right though. Just put a little effort into searching and you will find the answer.
Now on to the serious question... How do I install Android on my hd2?

Hay... it was my first flash ever and something went wrong, LOL. I recovered it. I guess that does not count at bricking does it???
The easy way? Drop t-mobile and get sprint with an EVO or Verizon with the incredible. Other then that... Or, gotta wait till some super phone Einstein dude\dudet takes the core of the android port for the TP2 and adapts its to the HD2. Least I think it can happen like that.
Huh? It just occurred to me we have the same... issue. I want the EVO but DO NOT like android. I use my phone for business. I own my own repo company and I'm always working with PDF's, word, excel, e-mail, ect. I know android does SOME of these but I need all of them no questions asked. It should be a choice. I think when you buy a smart phone (especially HTC) you should have the choice of android or WM. Don't cha think? However, I guess that's like asking for you cake and eating it too.
Yes thank you all here, i've spent hours reading through posts and helping myself to many great roms and addons.
I was just kidding about installing Android on my hd2. I actually like WinMo quite a bit. I guess sarcasm doesnt translate to text well.

Lol... I've had many of those. There are loads of Android on hd2 threads in the T-Mo hd2 section. It cracks me up, there is a new one everyday.
I am not a noob to flashing, not a noob to computers, and have a decent amount of programming background but i havent seen anyone post new developer client programs. I did see the kernal source code posted im just wondering how to use it, make your own, compile and so forth. I can learn from there. If im posting in the wrong area my apologies feel free to move it (course you dont need my permission just admiting to my possible faults.)
If anyone knows where or would like to post a breakdown of what is needed to creat ROMs/Kernals for this phone please feel free to do so. I would love to try to brick my phone and let you know how well it doesnt work!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246
Take a look at that. You should get a feel for where things are and what better way to start than messing with the kitchen and tinkering with your own roms. I wouldn't mess with kernels just yet until you feel you are up to par on the android basics.
Thank you! I know a little linux, played with backtrack, took a couple networking classes in college hopefully thats enough to get started.
cool, love to see more developers emerge. Good luck
I learned to compile my own ROM and kernel for my nexus. The summary is to install ubuntu, then pull down the source. Change any code you want, then compile and flash it. I'm actually setting up same thing now for ginger bread.
Good luck! I always love to see more developers and what they can do!
Knowing BT and networking isn't really the same. Not saying you can't or won't learn android, but the firmware is a different environment.

Well i can try, see how to get things made the way i want. Brick my phone a couple times and tell you what not to do at the very least. For the most part i cant put a lot of time into it because im always on call for my job. But im going to start and play with it and loose hours and hours of sleep till i cant stand it anymore!
Its like a World of Warcraft addict but different... lol
There used to be some great ebooks for Android development on TeamWhiskey's forum. I wonder if they're still there...

Brick means its only use is a brick. If your phone isn't past repair, it isn't bricked.

I bricked my TP2 all the time. Hell, the first time i started flashing roms on my TP2 i accidently put a SPRINT rom on a VZW TP2...just going into bootloader and it rewiped the phone and allowed me to start over. I guess i dont know the "real" understanding of brick heh. Oh well i will find out soon.

I would start Here. Mr. Clown, our moderator, made a nice thread of everything you would need to get started on this quest. Take a look under the Guides | Rooting: (The guides to the basics) topic. There you would find a whole bunch of threads that tells you what to do. As others have said, READ READ READ before you do anything. There is even a video guide too. Goodluck
First thing you need is root and s-off (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952352)
Next you need to pick a Gingerbread ROM (CM7, MIUI, Gingerbeast, TPGB, AR HD, Coredroid, Leedroid) the list goes on. You can find them all in the Dev (http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1018) section of the Inspire forums. I STRONGLY suggest reading threads in their entirety before jumping into any of these processes. Yes, they're long. Yes, they have a lot of pointless posts. But the important, informative posts that are there along the way make the read worth it, and will leave you with a MUCH better understanding of what it is you're actually doing
And I'll apologize for the people being pricks. It just seems the same questions are asked over and over again, before anyone even takes a look at the forum. It's easy to forget that we were all noobs once, hell, I still consider myself being in the process popping my Android cherry, and my understanding of these things has grown 10 fold since I got my Inspire. We all have learning that still needs to be done, it's unfortunate that some people have to take such an elitist attitude all the time

Honestly, what did you expect? Take a look around you. This isn't "gettingstartedwithandroid.com."
It's like asking "Hey, have you guys ever heard of rooting?"
It's going to be mocked, plain and simple.
As I said i wasn't trying to be mean (or an ass as you so well put), I honestly didn't think this was a serious question.
You kind of left your |OP| kind of vague, you could have been referring to getting your hands on the OTA gingerbread update( a leaked version), or you could of been talking about custom roms (which there are many gingerbread roms). I assumed you were talking about custom roms, which is why I asked if this was a serious question.

Don't apologize. What that guy just did is the digital equivalent of running into a fly fishing shop, knocking over a display and shouting, at the top of your lungs "IS THIS WHERE HOW DO I GO FISHING?!?" Okay so I had a G2x and tried rooting it and I think i did something wrong. With all these instructions ramble on about one thing and another hard for me to really understand all the correct steps.
So can I please have someone give me a hand with this? As in a step by step process of everything? This is my second G2X brand new from T-Mobile has the Gingerbread 2.3.3. So if anyone can actually tell me step by step and what files I am going to need so I don't brick this one because 300USD is getting expensive.
u payed for ur replacement? lol
use the one click flash nvidia tool, to flash the clockworkmod, you dont evne have to root it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kG08Uc8pQT0
yeah I had to pay for a second one. GRRR T-Mo actually checks their phones with sprint if I bricked or something just dip it in water and send it in. They would never check to see if you rooted it. So anyways do I install Clockwork or only do the steps in the video with the nv flasher?
And whats the best rom? I really like the looks of MIUI sorta looks like my wifes iPhone.
i think you screwed yourself on this one... this phone is like virtually unbrickable, nvflash should be able to bring you out of any soft bricks you might run into and ive run into a fair share of them and never had a problem...
i would recommend you sift though the development section and read all of the tutorials and have a very good understanding of what you are doing instead of having someone spoonfeed you everything when you really dont know what you are doing... (im a high school math teacher and cannot stand it when students are just spoonfed information because in the end they really dont understand what they are doing)
start here though http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
Yeah, what he said. maybe you shouldn't be messing with your phone if you don't understand the implications.

Best thing I've ever read. It helps shine a light on why so many people almost daily are asking for help on how to do something when this forum is riddled with tutorials. I personally stopped helping months ago with any questions on how to root or flash or just anything that there are tutorials for. It just gets crazy redundant.

Then why even post in here? Don't be a ****. Even more frustrating than people who can't use a search feature are people too uptight and high-strung to help someone. Yeah, maybe the OP could have found the answer himself. But he's obviously been following a tutorial (likely in this very forum) that's not working for him (hence his replacement phone). The guy just needs two seconds of help from someone. In the amount of time it took me to copy/paste the following links, I could have torn him a new one thirty times over. But I'm not a ****. So, if you absolutely HAVE to post here, at least make it constructive. Incessant *****ing does no good for anyone.
To the OP:
Firstly, you'll need to flash CWM. This is super simple, given you're on a PC. If you're on Mac, things will get tricky (i.e. virtual Linux environment, headaches, etc).
Next, you can find an easy to follow rooting method here. It even has an unroot .zip option given you have to send your phone in again (will save you another $300 ).
And of course, you can PM me if you need any help. If these are the steps you have already followed, here's a YouTube video with some visuals. When I'm stuck on something, that usually helps me a lot.

Uhhhh... i really dont understand how i was being a ****... I simply stated that he should have a holistic understanding of what hes doing before he starts tinkering because the figure it out as you go method can lead to a 300 dollar paper weight. Not to mention I pointed him in the right direction to start....
All I did was give a bit of advice that I felt was in his best interest and then sent him on his way...
If you think what I originally posted was flaming then you clearly have never seen me tear somebody a new one lol

They are being difficult. What they realize is that the OP has already stated that he's bricked one device because he cannot follow directions. He obviously does not know what he's doing, and has problems following instructions because, as he put it..they go on and on... In the end even if he successfully roots his phone, he may wind up causing himself problems by having access to system files because it's obvious he doesn't really know what he's doing. Everyone shouldn't root. If you cannot follow the simple instructions to root without "bricking" a device, and you cannot follow simple instructions to bring the device back to an operational state, then perhaps rooting is not for you (OP). It just sounds like he is going to cause himself even more problems.

I can't believe no one has said this yet.
Most phones have water sensors, so dipping it in water would just void the warranty. Sorry if you were joking. But as many have said, it's pretty easy to flash the phone back to normal so the TMobile doesn't know it's been hacked. Did you ask here first?
I am thankful for all the responses. Sorry if I caused grief and headache to anyone. I was finally able to get my phone rooted giving the information that someone provided to me on here. I sent him a PM to personally thank him.
By all means I should probably be *****ed at if I don't follow instructions very well. I have always considered myself a visual learner. If I don't have hands on and able to see it done, it really complicates things for me. I guess you can call it a disability.
Anyways I have come from a long line to HTC which I can say is way different in rooting then these phones. I root them to begin with to get rid of all the stupid software T-Mobile places in my phone and to normally switch to CM7 which I have found out is giving me problems which I am currently trying to figure out.
So please negative comments and put downs are always accepted it comes with the questions. But I don't want to sound like an ass or anything when I say this because I mean it in the upmost respect to everyone, but isn't this a forum? A community forum?
Someone once had to show you, all I did was ask for the same help. And this whole GSM network ways of doing things is different from my typical Sprint CDMA network that I am used to. Everything was pretty much the same when it came to that.
Again please I AM VERY SORRY truly if I caused any problems. Please don't be upset at me. Thanks.

Do not sweat the whiners. Here is the way I look at it... It is a forum for developers. I can not develop crap, so I try to do my part by being helpful when I can. Everyone here was brand new at one point. Make sure you do your part by reading as much as you can. If you still have questions/issues, send me a PM.
Why does every noob question get followed up with a bunch bullshizz. We were all noobs at one point, I remember when my Huawei ascend scared me. Nothing is worse than bricking your phone and being upset than a bunch of know it all asses being pricks. Is the g2x forum the only one full of d-ckheads? I've never heard so much whining and holier than thou bs. I'm surprised we have any devs, ungrateful bunch of *****es. Wah, nvidia never, wah, everyone else has ics, wah, that noob asked a question, wah, I suck. I love my g2x, it's a typical musclecar, way over powered and finicky as hell. The g2x is not a beginners device, this is for big boys and girls. I wonder what the whiners would do if they owned a ferrari? Newsflash, they break down, a lot! I remember when xda was where you went for help and support, now I come here to be entertained by the ignorance of the know it alls. Go ahead, blast me, I'm a writer for an Android website and I'll make it painful. OK, then, how bout all these new roms and updates? It's like the g2x is reborn. Hey, wait a minute, I thought the g2x was a useless, unsupported piece of ka ka? Frickin morons!

Well first I am glad you were able to fix the phone however I understand knowledgeable people get frustrated because this phone is simple to root. With a phone that has been out this long there is no reason anyone can not find out what to do on there own.
There are so many YouTube videos and forums like this. You are not the second person to too your phone or to brick it so why create a new post looking for help when you can simply Google it. I know your lazy and expect someone else to do your work for you.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...9l19l0l3l3l0l1535l5020l1.0.3.0.2.2.1.0.1l10l0
See plenty of info on the subject I am sure one of these other people have been helped.
This is why devs are tired of these questions they have been answered over and over. You may find this mean to say but you most likely found this forum by using Google so use it to fix your phone. Stop wasting peoples time by being lazy and use your head.

The problem is this. Ppl dont know how to research their issue. Also ppl in our generation cant seem to follow directions worth ****. I was the same way. I learned on my g1.
