Factory reset - Captivate General

I've only done this on stock roms. What happens when you do this if your on a custom Tom?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

If you perform a factory reset on a rom using the phone's factory reset under privacy it will brick your phone more than half of the time... Would not advise.
Have the captivate odin3 one click stock flash on the ready and before you do anything, back up your apps with Titanium back up. Type "captivate bible" in google and it will take you to the proper place.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S HardReset

Hi,
I upgraded my Samsung I9000, from Éclair 2.1 to Froyo 2.2, with Odin, (everything is working fine), but...
My question is;
If I do a Hardware Reset does the phone downgrades to is factory default, in this case "Éclair 2.1", or it stays with the last OS installed?
Does anyone knows what happens??
Cheers,
Striken
A hard reset is different than a master reset. Hard reset only entails removing the battery from the device.
To answer your question, once flashed with a ROM, performing a MASTER reset, will bring the phone back to "factory" defaults, i.e. just like it was the very first time you booted it AFTER installing the custom ROM.
Hope that helps.

Thanks Man,
You are talking in a Master Reset, how exactly do you do that?
When I did a software reset it erases everything on the phone, contacts, apps I installed, everything except what belongs to the Rom I installed. Also the phone stayed like when was installed for the first time...
From what I've read an Hard reset puts the phone to is factory defaults, but when I did a soft reset it also stayed "brand new", like factory default.
My question is: does a hard reset erases the rom I installed and puts my phone like it was before I upgraded with Froyo 2.2?
I never heard anything regarding a "Master Reset", can you explain me more?
Thanks,
Striken
Also interested in learning how to Master Reset before playing with ROMs.
Bookmarked for later, thanks!
Hi Kops,
If you also learn anything about it please post it here ok?
Thanks
I believe you can find the stock firmware for your phone (2.1 or 2.2) and use ODIN to flash to that. By doing so, you will revert to 100% stock settings, no root, and no proof that you've flashed your phone at all.
In my opinion, this is your best bet for a "full reset".
When you flash a new firmware, the firmware is permanently installed. Performing a factory reset will NOT revert your phone to its older version. Only a reflash will do this.
Factory reset only resets things that are stored in user data space. Such as your contacts, custom settings and any apps that you have installed (not counting those that Samsung/Google have put into the system)
So there you have it. You can safely perform that reset if you want.

Thanks for the help guys,
So, there's no difference between a soft and hard reset? Or is the factory reset an hard reset?
When I did a factory reset it erases everything and restored the phone to is default settings.
So, the only way to put the phone back like it was when I purchased is installing Eclair 2.1 again...
Thanks,
The only way to get 2.1 back is by reinstalling an official samsung firmware. Yes. If you have an official samsung firmware though, the phone is as it should be.
A soft boot is generally where you send the device a reboot command or turn it off and back on. A hard boot to reiterate generally happens after the battery is removed and reinstalled. This is not what is known as a factory reset and will not modify anything.
A factory reset formats the userdata and cache partitions and resets all settings to default including deleting any apps that were not installed on the factory firmware.
I hope this has answered your question.

It did, thanks.
The only problem is that I never found an official Samsung firmware, in this case the Eclair 2.1 from Vodafone.
If you know any site that have that Rom please share it
I would like to have it so I can restore the phone in an urgency...
Cheers,

Already try that. They don't have it.
Or www.samsungfirmwares.com. they have an extensive collection of i9000 roms. Vodaphone is on the 3rd I9000 page.

Don't want to be a pain, but just one more thing if you or anybody knows...
When I both my phone it came with Eclair 2.1 from Vodafone like I said.
You presented me with a page that have the 2.1 stock Rom from Vodafone, but, originally the phone had a Vodafone startup animated logo.
Do you know if the rom in that page has that animation startup?
Thanks,
P.S. One more thing, when I said that I didn't find anything in that site I was mistaken, it was not that website but samfirmware.com website.
Thanks again,
Its a stock rom. Just like the one that shipped inside your phone. It will have all of the features of the ROM you started out with.

You can remove all user data that is located on internal memory by typing *2767*3855# in dial pad and NO it won't downgrade to previous firmware.

Factory Reset

If I have cognition on my device now, would it be ok to do a factory reset. My phone keeps turning off by it's self and I want to try to do a reset since some people in other forums said thats what they did to fix their problem.
not sure if that is the problem, i've heard its actually a hardware issue, try odin one click to stock, and reflash! my cap is a 1007 build and i used to get random shutdowns while on stock, but when i started flashing custom ROM's it all stopped. the last person that did a factory reset on a custom ROM was asking how to build a jig... so maybe some of the other more expierenced people can help on this issue!

Has your phone shutdown on its own before running cog?
If your phone is experiencing the random shutdown issue, than it most likely will not matter which rom you are on as the problem is hardware related.
You could always try doing the reset - just remember you will lose your apps
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
So, how do you fix it? Should I have AT&T replace my device or what?
If you are in that return period, might as well! You will loose your apps, but if you use TiBu to back up, then copy all the contents of titanium backup to your desktop!

Factory reset after Odin back to stock and rooting settings privacy factory reset. That'll fix it for you.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
If your just "stuck" at the samsung logo and had previously flashed a custom rom then you still have recovery....pull battery 3 button back to recovery do a complete wipe and flash another rom...if you dont have one on your phone, go to apply update zip and choose yes...your recovery should be green now...then go to mounts and storage>mount usb storage and now your computer will recognize your sd card and you can transfer another rom on your phone and flash...youll be all good then...

It's a friends phone and to be honest he can't handle the power of the root. He has no idea how to handle issues. I just want the phone to work normally. I flashed it back with the ultimate unbrick which unrooted it I believe but now the market dosent download apps. I just want the phone to return to out of the box normal working.
Please advise on how to fix the market not downloading.g

Go to settings>privacy and do a factory reset...the reason you cant download apps is because google talk authentication is failing...it happens sometimes on unbrick....a factory reset from phone will solve this..

For those with home button issues after ICS .exe

I used the DesignGears .exe with no issues on my phone. I then went to do it on my sister's phone and the home button did not work after booting into ICS. Here is what I did to fix it:
1. Odin back to 2.3.5 stock.
2. Root with super one click 2.3.3
3. Put phone in download mode
4. Run DesignGear's exe
Ymmv but it worked for me.

Darkside Super Wipe approach. Worked for me!
I used Darkside Super Wipe .zip, which I usually use before flashing ROMs. I heard before, that the CWM Recovery for the Skyrocket has a hardtime fully wiping some files, so I got in the habit of using this DS SuperWipe script, it wipes everything. After this all was working fine Home button, and all.
Please read the linked tread before using, I am not responsible for any problems, I am only providing my method of how I successfully Flashed ICS build to my Skyrocket, now on 4.0.3 kernel.
This will wipe everything so BACKUP FIRST!
I wiped with Darkside.super.wipe.ext4.zip
I opened the OneClick ICS.exe Odin file
Plugged Phone in, then went into download mode
hit start in Odin
After rebooting and setting up Phone I:
rebooted back into download mode
flashed SKyrocketCWMrecovery in Odin
unplugged the phone
rebooted into CWM recovery
installed SuperUser.zip
wiped Dalvike Cache
Fixed Permissions
rebooted
My next steps were to restore:
I started with restoring my internal SD card, which I saved to my PC
Downloaded Titanium Backup from the Play Store
Used Titanium Backup to restore the rest of my apps
Rebooted back into CWM recovery, maybe overkill
Wiped Dalvik Cache, maybe overkill
Fixed Permissions, maybe overkill
rebooted
Like I mentioned, the last part, about wipeing Dalvik Cache and Fixinf Permissions might be over kill. I wanted to do it all, now, and try to start clean it all worked out great for me. I started on Silvers SkyIceCream Rom with Fauxs Kernel10u and the UCLA3 radio. So as you can see I was not stock nor did I revert back to anything stock. Running the Super wipe script takes 1 minute, then just reboot into download mode, easy.
Hope this helps somebody, I only linked the Wipe file because all the other files have already been thrown around here in the last 24hr. No need for me to be redundant, or enabling.
I didn't unroot my phone. I just did factory reset of 2.3.6, flashed ICS, and everything works (home button, search, shutdown and restart)

do i have to go back to 2.3.5 stock first or can i just go to cwm recovery and use darkside wipe and then run ics odin?

Factory data reset worked for me. After setting everything up again plants vs zombies froze my phone up so I pulled battery. And it broke my home button again. Had to factory data reset twice to fix it.
Another problem I had was this morning my clock said 11:30 pm when it was 6am and wouldnt auto update with carrier settings. I had to manually set the time. Just wierd. So I reflashed via the original leak and still had the same problem. Anyone else?

I had a time issue until I unchecked auto set time zone, changed time zone, and rechecked time zone. So my time was accurate but not the right time zone.
I also had home button issue before and just did a factory reset and wiped cache. In fact, I had several problems after initial flash - videos would not play, everything was dog slow. At any rate, the factory reset fixed the home button, video is smooth, everything appears perfect.
Next step: Take the plunge with CM9

You have to do a factory reset in recovery. You won't loose pictures, music, etc on your sd card. You will loose all your apps which you'll have to reinstall if you don't have them backed up.

Did you have those backed up to Google? It generally does that by default. You're kind of between a rock and a hard spot. If you can't get past the boot screen you'll have to do a reset, but contacts and text will be lost if they're not backed up somewhere else
