Factory Reset - Captivate General

If I have cognition on my device now, would it be ok to do a factory reset. My phone keeps turning off by it's self and I want to try to do a reset since some people in other forums said thats what they did to fix their problem.

not sure if that is the problem, i've heard its actually a hardware issue, try odin one click to stock, and reflash! my cap is a 1007 build and i used to get random shutdowns while on stock, but when i started flashing custom ROM's it all stopped. the last person that did a factory reset on a custom ROM was asking how to build a jig... so maybe some of the other more expierenced people can help on this issue!

Has your phone shutdown on its own before running cog?
If your phone is experiencing the random shutdown issue, than it most likely will not matter which rom you are on as the problem is hardware related.
You could always try doing the reset - just remember you will lose your apps

So, how do you fix it? Should I have AT&T replace my device or what?

If you are in that return period, might as well! You will loose your apps, but if you use TiBu to back up, then copy all the contents of titanium backup to your desktop!

[Q] seemingly random reboots

Hello. I've had my skyrocket for few days and I've noticed it randomly reboot for what it seemed to be no real reason.
After trying for a while to figure out what might be wrong, I noticed the reboots seem to stop when I deactivate the "power saving mode". I'm still waiting to see if it reboots again though.
is this a known issue? a bug? I did search but couldn't find anything related.
maybe a custom rom would fix this? or maybe the phone defective?
Thanks for any info. the phone is running 2.3.5
you're completely stock? that's almost forsure a background app causing you problems, do u have any system/utility Alps installed at all?

yes, completely stock. haven't installed any system or utility apps. as far as I can remember it did the first reboot just a few minutes after I enabled the power saving mode in settings.
Is there a way to read some sort of log or something and try to find more info?
backup data with titanium backup. Flash cwm and do a nandroid backup. Flash darkside and then Odin stock back on phone. Restore Alps one by one over a few hours and check stability
That happened to me as well. Phone defective I would exchange it if I was you.

Huge problem with ICS Leak

After installing the ICS leak and rooting it, I can barely use the phone. It freezes constantly (for about 15-20 seconds) after any type of touch input, then I get an error message
"Unfortunately, the process android.process.acore has stopped"
Going to try clearing data, etc. but I'm not sure what is causing this, it might be the Play Store
Edit: I realized that the issue occurs after restoring using titanium backup. Not quite sure what specific app is causing the issue. Going to factory reset, wipe cache/dalvik, restore using titanium until it works!
Wrong section buddy but ya just boot into cwm and wipe cache and dalvik

I've got no problem. Keyboard lags a little but that's fine.
Try a factory reset

Amidst a bunch of problems
I've had, I've found wiping cache & dalvik and doing a factory reset cleared most of them up. Still have issues with Rom Mngr.
Wiped cache and dalvik but still having issues. What's happening is that it will vibrate once, freeze, vibrate three times, then say "Unfortunately, the process android.proces.acore has stopped." after about 15-20 seconds. I'll try a factory reset but I might have to end up reverting back.
re-flash the rom. I have had this issue before. You HAVE to re-flash.

Through ODIN?
Ok well it seems a factory reset solved the problem (for now). I'll try another Titanium Backup and if that causes any issues I'll probably go back to GB

factory reset solved the problems that everyone is having with serious ICS issues.
Well I think I found the problem. It did happen again but I found the source. After the factory reset everything worked fine. When i did a Titanium Restore, however, I then rebooted, but the phone froze (or so I believe). I pulled the battery and turned it on and experienced issues

Sounds like an issue with something that was restored then...?
Ok, even more issues now. Without doing titanium backup, just a factory reset, the home button doesn't work, the phone doesn't shut off without pulling the battery, and the lock screen doesn't appear. Reflashing the ROM through ODIN to see if this will work...

When jumping between versions(EX 2.1->2.2, 2.3.5->3.0.4, sometimes even 2.3.3->2.3.7), I've never seen a full TitaniumBackup restoration work. Literally the exact same issues you are describing.
At most I can restore games saves/app settings, and I have to use something like SMS Backup and Restore for text messages.

I guess I'll give up on the Titanium restore for now. I've only had this phone for three weeks so I don't really have any data that can't be replaced.
Thanks for everyones help

Were you using titanium backup?
I wonder how moving the data from /mnt/sdcard to PC for backup and then moving back to /mnt/sdcard after the ROM upgrade will affect the ROM stability...

Ah, I see.
I seem to have fixed most of the problems with before. I'm noticing a very slight delay with the home key, but none of the other capacative buttons, only home. Slightly frustrating.
if a titanium restore is truly the cause of your problem you should tryto restore apps only (not apps & data) you will have to re sign in to everything but you shouldn't have any freezing and such going on....
*note you will also lose any progress in any games and such but already your phone will be functional again!

Who still has the "Turning Off" problem and who solved it?

After my phone got back from repair I had the "phone turning off" bug, I tried almost everything but can'T solve the problem at all. Who else suffers from the problem and who solved it so far?
What android version are you on I thought it was fixed with gb
sent from my acidhazard thrill
no, the problem started with gb, the reboot problem was on froyo
Ahh I thought that's what you meant my phone has never shut off

Have you ever used overclocking?
Are you on a custom rom or on stock?

Mostly when I get into that problem, I'll backup all my application+data and wipe factory reset the phone and fresh install custom firmware. Then restore app and certain important data only such as contacts, sms etc.

things really get crazy somehow ! as i was sure that the problem was hardware related, I remembered that the phone never shut down on froyo, so I downgraded to 2.2, but no matter to which version i revert back, I just don't have signal !

How did you revert back your ROM? And how do you do an upgrade? Is it by flashing .zip from recovery of by KDZ method? If by .zip from recovery I believe you did it wrong since ding it that way is not include flashing baseband.
Wipe dalvik cache, Wipe battery stats, wipe cache partition and full wipe/factory reset from recovery. Then flashing.
Proper method to upgrade/downgrade is using KDZ method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1287236
It will install the ROM and the baseband. After that don't restore any application yet. Check it first, is it still shutdown? Is it still no signal? Is it still have battery drain problem? If it is, then it's a hardware failure. Send it to LG Service centre.

Man nothing against you, I know you wanna help, so thx for that, but I'm trying to get advanced help, all these common things aren't any problem and I know almost everything about them. I am asking if anybody succeeded to get rid of the shut down problem and if anybody else had signal loss after reverting back to froyo ? And the main reason why I started the thread, is because I know that there was the reboot issue on froyo and the shut down problem on ginger and this was a serial bug

[Q] Oops I Killed It

I have a rooted and unlocked GS3 with liquidsmooth running on it. I tried the encryption feature which turned out to be a horrible mistake, every time the phone locks it turns off then restarts(Which I am pretty sure it isn't supposed to be doing) and now I am stuck in safe mode hell with a phone that keep restarting, should I just reflash it, or is there a way to fix this issue? Sorry if this is the wrong forum, I am rather new.

Odin back to stock and reroot, easiest way to solve the problem
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
You can try to reflash the ROM to see if that works. Don't forget to do factory reset when flashing. That should get you back to factory settngs of the rom and reset your setup including the encryption mess.
Alrighty, thank you both for the help

Need urgent help.

Okay so I am running CM10 stable on i9023. Its been fine for like a month I think with just a couple of reboots. But today I have been getting reboot whenever I turn on bluetooth. Its a very ugly situation where upon boot the phone reboots again as soon as trying to turn on bluetooth. I then clear dalvik cache and cache to make it work again. However it seems like I really am stuck now it just wont boot anymore.
I have tried clearing cache again but it still wants to turn on bluetooth and reboots. Even took out the battery for several minutes but to no avail.
My titanium backup is a bit old so please what should I do here that doesnt require data reset?
Does nandroid backup also restore those apps which were moved to SD card?? Would it even solve the situation here?
Thanks.
Okay I finally got it running again but what do I do about the bluetooth problem now? I am scared even touching bluetooth now but I really need it from time to time. :S
So everything was fine for a few hours then I decided to do a normal reboot and bam I get the bootloop again. Something has seriously got messed up I guess.
Please anyone what would you suggest me?
Do a factory reset from recovery. If that still fails, flash the factory images and see if everything works.

How can you blame CM for that? Or any rom for that matters?
You had multiple reboots, the early ones which might have be caused by something unrelated to the rom, and the later ones something was probably corrupted. If data was being written when it rebooted on you, it's no wonder you'll have problems...

Well my bluetooth is now working fine after a factory reset.
Infact yes I did install/uninstall this app a few days ago but I suppose I cant be sure about blaming it for it.

It wasnt the first time CM rebooted on me, stock rom on the other hand was very stable.
And then this whole mess happens.
only had some bugs with newer nightlies.
reflashing the rom w/o factory reset did the job
