[Q] Anyone using the Omnia 7 in the US on AT&T

Is anyone using the Samsung Omnia 7 on AT&T? I know it has support for AT&T's 1900 band for 3G but wanted to know how the experience is. I'm in Germany this week and was hoping to see if I can pick one up [not really happy with any of the AT&T phones].
Also, with updates possibly being controlled by carriers what's the workaround for buying an unlocked device from overseas and using it in the US on AT&T?

can't tell you about omnia on at&t, but as far as i'm aware if your phone is unlocked from carrier, i don't see any reason/possibility for them to delay an update being rolled to your phone.

I'm sorry. this is my first post for this forum. Im not educated on on the compatibility of the EU phones on US carriers....
But is this really possible? I really like the SS Omnia the best so far.

it will work perfectly.. except for the lack of 3G. The omnia lacks the all important 850 band at&t uses... and the 1700 band tmobile uses.

An explanation for "The omnia lacks the all important 850 band at&t uses" would be useful as AT&T also supports 3G on the 1900 band that the Omnia 7 supports. So seems like it should work...

Dependa on the tower. Lacking tje 850 band is a big deal on att.

One advantage with the Focus is it has an SD card slot to extend storage.
If you use you phone for music,movies and games it's a big +.

lacking 850 is not a problem since only mayor citied like new york, san fran, dallas etc. have 850 and the majority of normal city only have 1900. so 1900 is fine given you don't have access to hsdpa and hsupa, only regular 3g. now if only i can find an unlock omnia 7 under $650.

There are maps available showing coverage for each AT&T 3G frequency band. I wouldn't dismiss one band over the other. It all depends on what city you live in.
Check into the coverage areas before you waste money on a phone that won't give you 3G coverage in your area.

Very interesting as I googled AT&T 850 vs. 1900 MHz Coverage and pulled up a very interesting map [can't post a link due to my post count].
Coverage of the two bands is almost identical. I didn't know that speed is something to give up on the 1900 band though.

I'll be asking at an AT&T store, perhaps they can shed some light...

i personally am not sure if all phones handle the varying bands straight from the OEMs. HTC lists what bands their phone supports to each region, but in saying that it would be good to know what would happen if you got a omnia to the US (or in my case if i somehow managed to get an unlocked focus to australia ).

I don't think the phone supports at&t's 850mhz band.

From what i've heard, ATT doesn't even really use the 850 spectrum much anymore...

Several people are selling this new on eBay for ~$600, but it does not support 3G. As per the one auction details:
* Works with AT&T and T-mobile EDGE but does not work with 3G networks in the USA
* Works with AT&T 1900Mhz 3G but not AT&T 850mhz 3G - Does not work with T-mobile 3G in the USA
I love the design of this phone too but is it worth paying all that money for a phone where you won't be able to take advantage of all its features? Edge is slow as Sh*t compared to 3g in my area. Just consider that if you really want this phone in the US.

HSPA+ 21 only works with T-mobile, AT&T doesn't use an AWS band, in this case is 1700/2100Mhz.
Someone may have been able to 'trick' the vibrant into using a basic UMTS band on AT&T, but I never heard of it, let alone heard that the Vibrant supported AT&T 3G. The Vibrant has GSM.support for them (2G), I haven't seen anything else.
Where's the supporting documents that people have been getting At&t 3G with a T-Mobile Vibrant?

Trust me.... I'm using a vibrant on at&t with 3g. It does support the wcdma 1900 band. There is alot of evidence of this...heck engadget made a post about this... google it!
Edit: What I was trying to ask is if the galaxy s 4g supports the 1900 wcdma that the original vibrant supported....

That would work....hopefully the galaxy s 4g can be unlocked the same way the previous galaxy s phones could.

In my research I have found that 4G is not backwards compatable with 3G. Someware I read that companys are putting 3G and 4G chips on the new 4G phones to bridge the gap between the 3G chip ability to handle voice and the 4G chip being able to handle data. I can't say for sure if SGS4G has both chips. It's a know issue that the 3G SGS misses calls when connected to a laptop because It does not handle data well in combination with voice. That's why I upgraded to the 4G. I don't think Its going to make a lot of difference until TM gets their HW in place with a backbone that can support it.

Samsung Galaxy S 4G 1900 MHz WCDMA
I bought my Samsung Galaxy S 4G at a T-Mobile store in San Francisco. I subsequently upgraded it to the latest firmware provided by T-Mobile using Samsung Kies.
I usually use WCDMA only mode because GSM causes awful buzzing sound when I use it in my car (I have a FM transmitter connected to my phone).
Anyways, I was curious to see if I'd see AT&T, so I searched for network (still under WCDMA Only mode), and it found both AT&T and T-Mobile.
I pressed *#197328640# in the dialer, and then went to the debug screen/band selection to look at available bands, and it actually does have 1900 WCDMA.
It shows
GSM 850, 900, 1800, 1900, WCDMA 2100 (FDD I), WCDMA 1700 (FDD IV), WCDMA 1900(FDD II).
I don't know if AT&T SIM would work since my phone is locked but I can report back once I get it unlocked.

EDIT: Reading an old post of mine, I realized that my memory played a bad trick on me. My tests DID work on 1900 WCDMA and DID NOT work on 850 WCDMA, just opposite to what I wrote earlier in this post. --sorry

I don't think it would work. For reference, here is a side by side band comparison between my Vibrant (tested 3G on AT&T) and my coworker's SGS 4G (locked, untested).
The essential band here is the 850 1900 WCDMA, but the "overflow" 850 WCDMA is missing and I couldn't make it work anyways (I'm in Houston, maybe it is not switched on here).

My understanding is that AT&T usually uses 1900MHz for 3G, and in certain cities where they don't have enough bandwidth in 1900 MHz like NYC and SF, they use 850MHz.. so you could still get by with only 1900 MHz, no?

Yep, thats what I have heard as well. Now one thing of note. When I tested my Vibe, it only worked on the 850 1900 WCDMA band. Could not make it work on the 850 no matter how hard I tried. I'm in Houston for that matter and maybe this 850 WCDMA is not enabled here.

I'm currently unlocked on AT&T and i'm on 3G. I ALWAYS have an issue with upload speeds, but otherwise download speeds are just fine.
I attached four photos, of the available bands with my CURRENT galaxy S 4G unlocked on AT&T.
Also, a speed test I ran. That download speed is WAY higher than average because it was taken when the network was under the lightest usage possible, late at night.

Am I really just on HSDPA, not HSPA+? Is there a definite way to find out what my phone is using? Thank you.

Technically I'm on HSPA+, though this phone doesn't even cover all of the "necessary" bands.
Look, to edit what bands you're on go into the market and download SGS Tools.
Then, go into the first line (Secret Codes) and hit Band Selection.
I'm on AT&T so I'm not sure what bands you need, but you can manually select them in there.
To check the band you're on, go to GSM Status in the "Secret Codes" page again.

I downloaded Phono, and it says Network Type is HSDPA. Shouldn't it say HSPA+? I'm just wondering if there's an easy way to tell if I'm really on 4G (aka HSPA+) as opposed to 3G.
I actually messed around with debug settings last night so I'm worried that I screwed it up....

Which debug settings did you change?
And as for Phono (which I've never even heard of/used until now), my phone says HSDPA as well, which, quite frankly, makes no sense. I guess you can technically get speeds of around 5MBPS on HSDPA but it's not typical.
You should easily be able to tell whether you're on HSDPA or HSPA+ with the 4G/3G connectivity icon. in your status bar.
Now, I'm no expert, but hopefully that answers your question.

I played around with GCF settings. When I go into debug mode, there was something about choosing Rel.6 or Rel.5 or cancel settings.. And then also, if you do *#3214789#, you can enable/disable GCF Mode.. which I have no idea what it is about....

Hmm...that's awfully strange.....
I can't find anything about it anywhere....
Try restoring using ODIN yet?
I mean, if the phone is that messed up since you messed with that setting.

I put my friends att sim in my unlocked sgs4g to test and the 3g sign came up by the bars as well as the att operator logo didn't really test out speeds but im guessing that the 3g sign wouldn't have came up unless it was really picking up that frequency.

[Q] CDMA advantages? (DroidPro vs Galaxy for travel)

I travel a lot so I have a special prepay simcard for travel. At the moment I'm using a i9000 Galaxy which has 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz GSM & 900, 1700/2100, 2100 MHz UMTS bands.
However, I still have an unlocked DroidPro (XT610) and not sure whether to take it with me traveling. Unlike the galaxy the Pro has CDMA and also is similar in potential to the Galaxy with it's hardware, especially with a better battery. A very good thing for me is that possibly it looks a lot cheaper than the galaxy.
But the DroidPro has very poor community support and Motorola make it difficult for custom ROMS. The other problem I find is the keyboard doesn't always play well with Android.
The thing is, the DroidPro has CDMA and UMTS 1900 band coverage instead of 1700. Is this better global coverage or not? What are the advantages of CDMA? Do I need a new simcard to use CDMA?
The DroidPro also has "EV-DO Rev.A" whatever that is for data... I wonder if that might help me get data services with a local simcard in some places.
It's probably only a matter of $120 to sell the DroidPro... should I keep it?

As far as I can see there isn't anywhere without GSM coverage, but there could be a place where CDMA is the only prepay local simcard option.

Your phone can be used in many countries with GSM coverage since your phone is a world phone and uses SIM cards. The only network I got sure know it won't work with is T-Mobile USA since it uses the 1700 band.

I have a Motorola RAZR HD XT925 which was sourced from Rogers Canada. I was wondering how I can check the devices LTE frequencies? Is there any engineering code and/or menu that would assist with this? This device apparently supports LTE 800 / 1800 / 2600 or LTE 700 / 800 / 1700 / 1800 / 2600 according to GSM Arena. I am wanting to use the LTE 1800MHz frequency in Australia, though cannot get it to connect.
I have tried the following:
Searching for networks manually / letting the device select them automatically
Toggling between 3G only and Automatic (4G/3G/2G)
I definitely have the correct APN settings configured (for Telstra in Australia)
Data is enabled, the SIM card connects to 4G in another mobile
Any assistance would be appreciated, in finding out which LTE network frequencies this device supports.

Do not rely on GSM Arena those guys are rookies.
The Rogers RAZR HD has LTE 700/1700/2100 via the rogers website.

XT925: (international)
Secondary Cellular Networks: LTE700 (B17), LTE1700/2100 (B4), LTE1800 (B3), LTE2600 (B7), LTE800 (B20)
From what I've read, B3 is Australia's LTE band, so it is supported, but it might be turned off in roger's radio.
Have you tried installing the firmware for Telstra? It's available here: http://sbf.droid-developers.org/van...25_A045_WIG149790_Service1FF_fastboot.xml.zip from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1943879 Maybe switching to your provider's firmware will fix the LTE issue.

Hi. This is a good source here in Australia. Hopefully is updated and current. http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/mobile_phone_frequencies
Note, however, that LTE is really new here and not yet well implemented. I live in Sydney, but I'm outside of the LTE network at home. I'd have to travel closer to the business district to get it. I think its implemented around the airport as well. LTE is still a work in progress and Telstra is ahead of the game with the other telcos, but you're going to want to be able to connect to their "Next G" or 3.5 G to fallback on otherwise youre going to get 2G.
In any case, you want to make sure your APN settings are correct as well. There is loads of misinformation about that. You can have Telstra set them for you (or at least it worked on my Galaxy S2, haven't tried with this phone since I got it from their store). On my Galaxy S2, I had read lots of documentation and had things working but found that after going through a Telstra automated thing (I think the above link), that it set my APNs for me and I ended up with better speed and signal.

The 2100 frequency on their 3G or NextG (3.5G) may have been turned off at this point; I don't remember. They may still be using it for legacy phones and people on bring your own phone plans but I beleive they had wanted to either shut it down or sell it to another carrier. I don't recall that my SGS2 got 850 ... I just noticed there's tabs on the Telstra page that explains their coverage. Click on them and that's more accurate than what I just typed
I suspect your problem is that you may not be in an LTE covered area. Either that or its your APN settings. Let us know how it goes.
EDIT: Sorry, I didn't read your post properly that the SIM works in another device. If it isn't your APN settings, you can take it to a Telstra store and ask them if they know what the problem is. On occasion they do know what their talking about. You can point them at this web page if need be and it might encourage them to look a little deeper:

I no longer have this device, and unfortunately never tried flashing the Telstra firmware on the device.

The device that I had was sourced from Rogers Canada, and didn't support LTE 1800MHz out of the box. They wouldn't have been able to help.

Telstra's 3G 2100MHz network was part of 3GIS, an agreement between Telstra and VHA, which ended on August 31st. Telstra still uses the 3G 2100MHz network frequency, it is actually part of their Next G network now, they however do not advertise this, as very few sites are still using this network frequency, and it is far more important to have a device that supports 3G 850MHz. Telstra lost quite a few 3G 2100MHz sites when 3GIS closed, although all of the areas would have had 3G 850MHz anyhow, so it was not really a big deal.

European HTC Desire Z to Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G?

Im wondering if anyone has gone from the Desire Z to the Galaxy S Relay 4G in Europe.
I ask for Europe to make sure it is compatible with most networks over here.
I see there is even ROM development over here with 4.4.4 running I imagine codename "Android L" will probably run as well

I went from Desire Z to Galaxy S Relay, it works well in Norway.
You need to unlock the phone from T-Mobile, see this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2255892.
Be aware that this phone is not enabled for 4G (LTE) network, only 3.75G (HSPA+). HSPA+ is marketed as 4G in USA, not in Europe.

3G works in Norway too?
I think by frequencies sadly 3G wont work here where Im at A shame.

900 MHz 3g doesn't work!

I upgraded too from Desire Z to Relay, didn't even realize any 900 Mhz problem. I get always an H or E icon (HSDPA or EDGE), so 900 MHz should be working.
According to specs, the phone should work with these networks:
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 850 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100
I have it in Telekom in Slovakia and in the meantime I travelled to NY and got no problem at all (I had it set to manual network selection to save roaming charges).
The phone I bought via ebay was locked (even the seller described it as unlocked) but after firmware downgrade I easily unlocked it. I recommend LiquidSmooth ROM, you'll fall in love with that phone!
My other finalist was Moto Photon Q, it supports GSM but lacks SIM card slot. If you want, there's a guy in Prague, the author of the sim card mod instruction post on xda, that can do it for you. But I chose the easier way. Now I have a small problem with display flex cable (probably too much openings/day) so I'm considering buying another Relay before they're gone with no decent qwerty phone around. And I can leave the current one for spare parts. I had to put away my DZ because of the keyboard. Some keys started to write several characters instead of one and there was no easy way to fix it.
FYI ebay deals in your name with customs, so they charge you immediately and the phone is delivered to your door without customs holding it for a week.

I did not owed the HTC, I used an Xpreia Pro prior to my S4 Relay. However I have the S4 relay for almost 1 year and I had no problems using it in the UK. I have traveled in Europe (France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania) and I was able to use it without any problems. AFAIK it works just fine on 900 Mhz but in 2G. The big question is what freq of 3G is your network provider using. For example, in UK I'm on EE network which is using 2100 Mhz for 3G and 1800 Mhz for 2G so the device works perfectly. Ifyou are on Movistar Spain than your phone will work fine, since the company is offering 2G on: 900/1800 MHz (both supported by S4 relay) and 900/2100 MHz UMTS ( from which 2100 is supported by the device). In very simple translation 2g will work everywhere without any problem, it might happen that is some places you will not get 3G signal.
