Because of all of the issues about the Captivate S I've read about on this forum, I've decided not to purchase one. I travel a lot (read GSM/UMTS) and need an unlocked handset for local numbers. I also depend on GPS navigation that isn't functional on the Galaxy S.
Goodbye Android, hello Symbian ^3 in the form of a Nokia N8 I just ordered.
I really appreciate the good info I got from this forum. Next year I'll again consider an Android handset.
And Symbian dont have ANY problems? That is hard to believe.
ha great choice, not.
To each his own I suppose... have you tried using the Captivate? I have a feeling with even all the supposed negatives, it still blows any Nokia away. The GPS isn't a big deal for me and I'm sure a sim unlock is just a call to ATT away (I've called and asked for 3 unlock codes for an LG and two blackberries just last year).
The problem with coming to this type of board for the kind of advise you're seeking on getting a new phone is, a lot of people complain about the negatives. People are seeking out fixes or mods for this issue or that.
To be fair, I'm not a big fan of Nokia or Symbian. I owned a 5800 XM and it was pretty horrible and the N8 or Symbian ^3 doesn't really do it for me. The apps are sorely lacking, messaging and email left a lot to be desired. I'll probably get another iPhone 4, jailbreak it and run ultrasn0w baseband unlock so I can use international sim cards before going with the Nokia again.
I can tell you from personal experience that one of the better phones from Nokia in the past 3 years is the e71.
The n81 is a very cheap feeling phone, and you'll hate the buttons. The n82 is good, but only has european 3g.
n95 is still a beast of a phone, and the 8gb model is nice.
You should be looking at the n8 if you really want to go with symbian, or wait for their S-Series to come out running MeeGo!
And it is not symbian^3, it is just s60.
Go to any forum for any phone and you will see hundreds of negative posts, but most issues don't effect most people.
I have not had the gps issues or many other problems. Also, the users with no problems never post.

Wow. I used the GPS tweak on this forum and my Captivate has been rock solid since the tweak! I use the Google navigation all the freaking time! By the way, the Google navigation is > the ATT Navigation (AKA Telenav) & it's free!! Sorry to hear you didn't utilize the level of detail available to you. Good luck with the Nokia.
returned my captivate for an iphone 4 today...i wanted to love this phone and it just didn't work out. today was real bad and i had enough of it. it was lagging really badly, it would take 10-15 seconds to open an app, screen froze up for a good 30 seconds, and phone wouldn't turn on from being locked. gps is still an issue, even with the tweaks...it takes 15-30 seconds to lock on which is not good enough for me. The music player is terrible, its very sluggish and theres no set program to transfer music/videos/whatever onto the phone. It took me an hour just to transfer 300 songs over to the captivate...wtf. android market wasn't that great, the facebook app was terrible for it btw. there are some good points to the phone, it has nice widgets, swype, camera, and videos are amazing on this. i blame samsung, they pushed this phone out before it was ready, if they had waited and fixed the problems it would've clearly blown iphone out of the water.

Wow..... Seems like you had a "special" captivate.
Wow, I'm just really surprised that you researched some Captivate problems but didn't bother to research all of Symbians problems.
The biggest problem not having as much features as any Android phone does.
I've been happy with my Captivate, and it does everything I need it to do and a lot of times it does more than I need it to.
I even save $15 a month with free SMS with google voice. Picasa syncs and saves all my pics to my phone from my PC, and so does my calender.
Captiate has been the best phone I have ever had.

nope. mine was starting to get to that point and then did a factory reset and the phone is blazing again. I think it was all the apps because i felt like some apps like apndroid didnt uninstall right(yes i know i gotta enable b4 uninstalling).

i also did factory reset...it didn't help. i might have had a defective captivate maybe idk, but im the type of guy that likes it simple and get it done, with the captivate you have to do a lot of tweaks and stuff like that, until it gets fixed atleast. i was disappointed when i had to return the phone...i really wanted to like and i thought it was the phone i was gonna keep for a long time when i first got it.
Your experience hardly reflects the average user experience with this phone though....i love mine and so do a lot of people...sorry to hear about your issues but maybe you should have gotten a replacement or do you really think all the people praising it are just putting up with all the stuff you experienced?
I've used message boards for years. I've even adminned a few, and I still maintain my own small one. And I still don't understand why people start threads based on this kind of pap, other than to draw attention to themselves either for self-aggrandizement or to make martyrs of themselves.
In either case, I don't care. I'm not here to find out what phone anyone uses or why, nor do I care about the second-hand opinions that fuel those decisions. All I care about is learning more about the experiences of others with the one I've chosen in an effort to both expand my own experience with it and to share likewise.
I agree with not buying the captivate, I would have gone with a Nexus One or a Dell Streak though.

i admit, i think most captivates are fine but i also think there are plenty of users that are willing to put up with the problems of this phone, i wasn't one of those users though. those users that are willing to put up with this phone are hoping that samsung will come out with a fix for it and who knows when that is and whether that even fixes the problem. Like froyo, i hardly doubt it will come in September. I'm not going to sit and wait for that to happen when i can get a phone (iphone) that works flawlessly and can perform the same core functions as a captivate. i gave this phone a try and didn't work out, it's simple as that.

Looking at your complaints, seems to me that your biggest problem is that you never got off the Apple tit, and don't know how to live without iTunes.

to the OP...
Obvious Troll is Obvious...
So, I have had my G2X for more than 2 weeks. And to be honest, I've never been happier with an Android phone. And I'm sure lots of you hate me for this, but I have no reboots and minimal screen bleed.
I do have problems with the phone.
Call list is ridiculously crippled. My ages old Nokia 6263 flip phone has a call log that splits up MISSSED, RECEIVED, OUTGOING, and ALL, it also calculates times and dates for EACH call, plus logs total times called
The G2X's call log is a list with phone numbers, horribly inaccurate times [such as "1 hour ago" when it was actually more than 1 hour 45 minutes ago\ and NO SPLITTING UP, the only way to tell what is missed or outgoing is by the icons next to the call, but no way to filter through [for someone in business, this is a must when I'm calling many different numbers through the day]
Then there's the little things I miss from my Defy
Battery Manager, considering how quickly the G2X can run through batteries, why no battery manager? The Defy had custom battery profiles and three very well thought out preset profiles, all usable at one point. Performance mode made everything go full blast, data, screen brightness, etc. Battery Saver made screen brightness 0, turned off autosync, and got you on 2g. Smart Mode was like performance mode, but went into saver mode if you weren't using the phone.
The buttons next to the app drawer: It make no sense to me for the buttons next to the app drawer button to be call and browser. On my old Defy, the buttons were CALL and CONTACTS, and they were nice big buttons that stood out. Having browser next to app drawer button makes no sense when you can access browser from either app drawer itself or a small widget on my screen.
The alarm application, RIDICULOUS! It can't use my music as an alarm, only the default alarms. Why in the world? I have to make an mp3 into a ringtone from ringdroid for it to work. Is this an issue with file locations and the memory cards? or is the alarm clock guilty of this one fatal flaw?
Well, what do you guys think? Some of you have brought up valid issues, such as the way the phone handles the internal storage and external storage and how much it complicates pathnames and default settings. then there's also the way wi fi calling can drop in the middle of a call for no reason.
Last but not least, I hate how this is the first phone where it's hard to get excited about any new phones. It's so above and beyond everything else on the market that what can really get my heart racing? The phone still isn't even on Gingerbread, the Tegra zone is barely getting started, and the modding community is just heating up. Honestly, what's out there? I think for once, anyone who upgraded or added a line for this phone definitely gets their 2 years worth out of it.
Don't get me wrong, this is one amazing phone. I love it to death..but there's some things that are just wrong and I hope the firmware updates addresses.

Stock launcher buttons can be changed? I wasn't aware of that, if you know how please let me know!
I realize lots of these issues can be fixed by apps, but I have to admit, it impresses me when a phone straight out the box is usable. The G2X is quite possibly almost that kind of phone, it's a beautiful stock like user interface and some of LG's takes on things are impressive
If you get handcent, you can use it's sound picker to use any file for an alarm.
From your other complaints, it sounds like you've not used a vanilla android before. Most of those things are either features or things to get used to. The functions you want can be found on the market.

Just download adw or launcher pro. They are way better than the stock launcher and can be customized just they way you want them. All of your problems can be easily solved by looking for apps on the market. Also eventhough we don't have official gingerbread, we already have a pretty stable cm7 build (at least it has been for me).
The only thing I would say I'm missing is Netflix support. But even that can be fixed by mods

I have to say that there is no reason at all that there is no default built in solution for battery management and or task management. LG or T-Mobile should have a solution for everyone, why give off such a critical feature to a slew of 3rd party apps.
All Thinkpads have a battery manager that manages how the laptop is charged, varies the charging and when it kicks in (ie start charging ONLY if under 85%) And has a battery reset that charges, drains, and charges, and resets the meter, all while plugged in.
No excuse for the phone builders to not manage that hardware...which the battery is a huge chunk of.

but my POS motorolas have these features and they're $379 and $249 phones
There's no excuse a high end premium handset shouldn't have these features. It has bloatware, but not a battery manager or alarm or proper call log? Not to mention subpar music and gallery apps.
Now, why, Motorola, with such horrible R&D and short coding staff can do it, but LG witha $600 MSRP can't?
The camera app on the G2X is proof LG can do things right and absolutely better than anyone. The rest of the basic functions should be at the same level.

Sorry to say, but this is a really stupid rant. Everything can be changed with a custom rom, or something from the market. Learn something before ranting about nothing. Also you're basically complaining about stock android...this is so stupid.
I use "AContact" for my contact list, call log and dialer. It is miles ahead of the stock Android contact list/call log. Best of yet, it's free to. A lot of things aren't included with Android because they know there are tons of 3rd party apps that people will download according to what kind of features there looking for. For a alarm, use "Alarm Clock Plus". It looks exactly like the stock alarm only it has a lot more features such as adding a song or a playlist of songs to wake you up.

So, where does that leave the average user? See, Android's nice, and I'm sure everyone would love for Android to become the number one OS, but if users who don't root and flash are stuck then why should they consider Android over iOS or WP7?
I have no problem rooting or flashing, I do it to a throw away phone like my old CLIQ XT running cm7
but I'd prefer to keep my 1 year warranty and extended warranty service valid for a $600 device.
You really should get an android phone from motorola or htc with their blur/sense services. You obviously don't want to do the research or work yourself to find apps. The htc sensation comes out soon. Return your g2x so we don't have to hear another pointless rant please, thank you. And how on earth did you figure out xda if you can't figure out this phone...

I'm sorry, actually no I'm not, but Android was not made for the average user. You want that experience then go get an iPhone. That's not bashing the iPhone but it has its niche. It's the Everyman device. You don't want or have the time to customize? Android isn't for you. This was a senseless rant and a part of me just has to wonder if you're a troll, especially if you're on a site as technically as XDA and are complaining about customization.
The wonders of Android are that if you don't like something, you can change it. That's why I've owned Android since its inception and I'll own it until it fades out of existence.
Last bit, rooting has nothing to do with changing the features you're wanting. There are easily found applications that remedy every problem you mentioned.
I don't usually rip into other users but this post just irked me.

Average user here ... I haven't rooted my phone, but certainly don't feel "stuck." I considered Android over IOS or WP7 because it offered me far more choices. For one, the contact list that bothers you so much is sufficient for me. What you consider obvious misses are clean, streamlined choices to me. I chose Android because I knew if there was something I didn't like (such as a contact list, alarm clock, etc.) there were hundreds of other options just a quick download away. I find it fun to try out different apps to find the one that absolutely fits my needs, and I always do.
The best thing you can do to help change your attitude is to personalize your phone, with just a little research, and maybe start with a new Launcher. I use LauncherPro and love how I can put any icon anywhere I want on its dock bar, in any order, and then also be able to use a swipe up gesture to get even more. So, on my phone icon, I use a swipe gesture to view my contacts so I have two useful features in one spot. Saves space and time.
I think once you adjust to having the ability to make choices for what you want where on your phone, you will truly see the beauty of Android.

You Mr. Average User do not have to root or flash to change anything you want changed. You chose a vanilla Android device...the flavor comes from adding your own toppings. If you want something pre-customized to someone else's tastes you should get an HTC device (Sense) , or gasp...a Motorola (Blur). Or maybe even a WP7 or retch...an IPhone. Point is you have choices. You wouldn't make yourself a big bowl of vanilla ice cream at the desert bar and the complain that you have to add your own toppings...that would just be...stupid. Just sayin'.
I agree the dialer is basic. It doesn't dial by name... just like the stock alarm doesn't play MP3s. But they are stock and can all be switched out.
I like the stock alarm. Simple and reliable. For dialer I liked Dialer One. But I conditioned myself to use stock dialer. Why? Well because we have awesome Voice Search.
Hold the search button for a second and say "Dial Dominoes 45325" and bam! Ordering pizza with no Google search or lookups. Same with contacts. "Call Dad mobile". Done. "Dialer One" is a good replacement though.
Launcher Pro is a good launcher replacement with lots of slick effects and options. Also ADW EX.
This is stock android where they keep things simple. Almost like they want you to explore your options. Welcome to personal user experience. You aren't locked down to any one app.
LG G2x - CM7 2.3.4
I currently have a Thunderbolt that just recently became close to unusable to me. (The power button does not work without me jamming it into an edge of a table or wall...I heard this is a common problem). I talked to Verizon, I didn't have insurance since I've never needed it before, all my previous phones have worked so well, and they could not offer me any good options, I'd have to buy a new phone at sticker price.
So I thought to hit up eBay to see what I could get. Then I realized, there are no phones out there that really call out to me as of yet. So then I had an idea, why don't I just get a phone that is easy to root/customize/hack, but use it normally until I do find a phone that does stand out to me. That way, when I do get a NEW phone, I'll have a secondary to "play" around with.
I am a software developer and know a thing or two about OSs and ROMs but not a whole lot. I've hacked various things like 360/Wii games down to the binary level, not "Hi I edited a text file and gave me more $$$ in my game, I'm 733t". That being said, I'm not interested in using easy 1-click install programs to customize the phone. I actually want to understand how it all works. Basically, I just want a phone that acts as a playground that I can just play around with. Any idea's what phone would be best for what I seek? Sorry, I am restricted to a phone that works on the Verizon network, but if there is a phone outside of Verizon that stands out too, I wouldn't mind hearing about it, but I need a Verizon phone unfortunately.
Also, I'd rather have a phone that has a little kick too (hardware-wise)...no sense in hacking an Atari when you can hack an Xbox, if you catch my drift.
I have a fascinate, and it's pretty easily hackable and nearly impossible to brick. very glad I made the decision to get this phone.

Hi,
I'm new to this forum and new to smartphone. After a few keystrokes, I landed here. Hope someone can help me on this.
I purchased an unlocked LG G2X two weeks ago from eBay. I have been using the phone for 5 days now. I noticed that sometimes, there was static sound in the background when the phone ringing. As soon as the the person on the other line picked up, the statis noise was gone, but there was an echo of my voice in the background. The echo lasted about 30 seconds.
Occasionally, the phone even made noise after I ended the call - the noise (tick tick) lasted for a good 3 - 5 minutes, not that loud but someone stood next to me would hear it.
I have been reading several posts in this forum and others. Some users recommend to "flash" the phone or "root" the phone. I am not that computer savvy, and this is my first smartphone, so I am afraid that I am going to destroy the phone if I do not do it properly.
Anyone has this problem? How do you do to resolve it?
Your suggestions are much appreciated.
Thanks.
Unfortunately rooting your phone is the only way to try to resolve your issue.... It is a really easy process using superoneclick I recommend doing some reading on backing up your phone and giving it a go. This phone is only good if rooted and flashed in my opinion... There are exstenive threads around here to teach a noobie enough to flash their phone. You are in the right place and welcome to xda!
Making bad decision's one at a time.

It is a really easy process using superoneclick I recommend doing some reading on backing up your phone and giving it a go. This phone is only good if rooted and flashed in my opinion... There are exstenive threads around here to teach a noobie enough to flash their phone. You are in the right place and welcome to xda!

Many thanks for responding to my questions.
If I could return this phone to the seller, I would like to buy a similar phone that has 4G, 8MP, dual core, HDMI capability, Android 2.3. Which ones out there (preferred t-mobile) should I get?
Thanks again.
You just named all the features of the g2x
If you flash any cynogen mod or weapon g2x rom you will have a superphone for cheap just have to install your own software which allows for limitless customization and preference. I would take another look at the phone you just got.

Update: I just returned the G2X and bought a brand new HTC Sensation. That G2x had other issues (LCD bleeding) besides the sound quality issue.
Thanks much for your time and responses.

This is my e-mail to HTC
English is not my primary language so please bear with me.
Multitasking: The phone can not multitask at all. Games, or apps. ex; I was running Runkeeper auto pause mode enable. Stop during my ride to check phone settings and make some changes. The phone killed my application deleting all my data. unacceptable browser refreshing, stopping music applications, closing games, and the list go on.
Games: It might not be HTC fault but as a customer I have paid for a lot of high end games that I can not play with this phone. I know the phone has the hardware to run the games. HTC need to work closer with the game developers to adapt the game to the phone. Ex, GTA 3 runs but I am having issues to save the game, exit, or pause.
Camera: I should be able to decide the quality of the picture detail even if that means slower shutter speed.
Front Facing Camera low lighting exposure is too low. Next to an iPhone in medium dark light conditions my phone performance is terrible. The iPhone looks great.
HTC Live weather wallpaper makes my phone to randomly reboot.
Picture Contact Resolution from G Plus or Phone is unacceptable.

WIFi issues already acknowledge by HTC
AT&T Network radio seems to hop between towers higher frequency than normal.
2G, 3g, 4g network toggle. During football games or big events, it is easier to switch between networks to be able to make phone calls or send text messages. I have not doubt 4G battery life on the HTC phone is improved but it is not as great as 3G or 2g networks.
Some memory lagging
SMS notifiaction issues already acknowledge by HTC
Gmail Push not working properly.
Google Voice is not installing correctly.
I know some the issues mentioned here are not under HTC control but as a customer I don't care. I have invested money on buying top end games and it is easier for me to find another phone that it is compatible with those games. I should not be the one hassling with the game developers.
Please take into account that I do not have any obligation to write you any complaints and my return window is in 23 days.
I love the phone design but the more I dig the more I keep falling out of love with the phone.
Could you please offer a clear direction if any software upgrade would be offered to improve your product and when?
Thanks.
I agree with all of the above. I love this phone and I continue to use this phone, but there are definite issues. The multitasking becomes a huge issue when I am using Google Navigator.
Xda forums is not the place to be lodging a complaint to htc. Not only does it take up space and clutter the forum, but there is no guarantee that they will ever read it. Email them directly instead of posting this here.

lol pretty sure he is just showing the letter that he wrote to them.....
I sent the letter to HTC. The letter is here so others can copy, edit, use the letter as guidance to log the complaint to HTC or AT&T.
I seen someone mentioned the bbb. I think thats a great idea. I think everyone should file a complaint with the bbb for htc and att. ESPECIALLY the locked bootloader. Companies shouldnt be able to say one thing and do the exact opposite. the whole lag/latency issue with a lot of stuff with this phone... I never had that issue with my amaze, and my dx NEVER has to load the home screen and I almost have the memory maxed out.
And I agree with the gaming issue. the hox cant hold a candle to my old g2x game wise even with basic games.
Something tells me htc doesnt give a crap. We all know att sure doesnt.
3/4 of that stuff has nothing to do with HTC...
"I know some the issues mentioned here are not under HTC control but as a customer I don't care."
You know that, but then you say you don't care. So, lets ***** at HTC anyways... great plan... I am sure if you call up Verizon and piss and moan that will help too! I don't support this type of crap, if you are going to contact HTC, do it intelligently, otherwise your email will just be ignored.

I understand what you are saying but this is the reason people move away from Android phones. It is not anymore if it is HTC fault. I paid for a high end phone and I want the phone to behave as a high end phone. HTC should have done a better effort coordinating with game developers before lunching the phone. Most or none of the top end games are working with this phone unless I root or do something to the phone. This is my complaint I wont ***** anymore, I will return the phone when the time comes. I sure would like to keep it.

To complain about what? The bootloader which isn't something 95% of people buying the phone would even know or care about? Or that HTC's memory management is too aggressive causing you to have to re-open apps in less than a second rather than have them sitting in memory? From observing the forum the biggest real issue is some radio funkiness which isn't unusual when a phone first launches. The i9100 had three updates in three weeks to address radio issues when it launched.
Companies shouldnt be able to say one thing and do the exact opposite.

1) Neither HTC or AT&T have officially said they're not unlocking the bootloader. If that actually happens then there's a beef. Anyone not wanting to take a chance should return their phone while under the remorse period and re-buy it once the bootloader's unlocked. And this is on the front page of the HTCdev site with a warning symbol and has been since the program started...
HTC is committed to assisting customers in unlocking bootloaders for HTC devices. However, certain models may not be unlockable due to operator restrictions. We continue to work with our partners on this, check back often for ongoing updates about unlockable devices.

Seriously? You think the issues that the One X is experiencing are remotely as severe as what G2X users had to put up with? That phone is the reason I left T-Mobile.
Other than the bootloader which is a philosophical issue, it's way too early to storm the castle with pitchforks and torches over some of the other issues. The phone’s been out two weeks, at least give HTC a chance to push out a couple of updates. They’re not idiots and didn't diabolically plot these issues to make purchasers of their flagship phone’s lives miserable. If you actually take a step back, for a device using a new OS, new overlay, and a new SoC the number of issues are pretty tame.
Coming from a Galaxy S and before that 3 iPhones that died for various reasons within a year of purchase, this phone is near perfect for me (knocking on wood now). I've had one lock-up and one random reboot. Beyond that, battery is fantastic, screen is out of this world and the speed is incredible. It does everything I want and more.
I'm a satisfied customer. Could things improve? Sure they could but I'm comfortable waiting to see what comes next. If nothing else is done with the phone, I'm good.
You have 23 days. Why wait? HTC/ATT aren't going to fix your complaints that fast. Heck nobody fixes things that fast.

You need to return that phone and get an iphone ASAP. Seriously, you expect HTC to work with game developers?? You clearly don't understand how Andorid is working right now. 30 different processors, 20 different GPU's, 50 different screen resolutions, 30 different memory systems. 3 or 4 different software versions. No company can work with ALL game developers to make the phone "compatible" with all of them. With all the variables I just mentioned, its simply impossible to catter to all of them. (Easy example, no Tegra 3 because of no LTE, so no Nvidia game zone for ATT H1X).
The phone DOES behave as a high end phone. Your standards are just looking for something different. Go back to the iphone, 1 piece of hardware, 1 software version, 1 screen size, Apple IS able to work closely with game developers to make the iphone "game compatible".

Who says I own an Iphone?
but it shows HTC needs to work closer with consumers and software developers to create a better experience. It is not about providing great hardware but itself anymore. The phone looks great but I am afraid to loose my bike ride log info again. I cant play any of my games. I have to mess with camera settings to get excellent pictures. It shouldn't be that difficult

Thanks for showing your letter. I often visit these forums before ordering a particular phone. I like to read about the good and bad experiences. Most often users are too excited when they get their new phones or too embarassed to admit they made a mistake to make a post.
My advice is to try the phone. My girlfriend came from using an iphone and she is loving the phone. Of course, She didn't know anything better. Other iphone former users friends are loving the phone too. I think CM9 set a bad precedent in my taste (spoiled)

Thanks for sending the letter. I too have sent letters about wifi, gmail push, and multitasking.
Flame me if you will, but if wifi and gmail push aren't fixed (officially -- leaks do not cut it) within the next 2 weeks, I will have to return this, despite the fact that I absolutely love the hardware.

If you don't own an iPhone, it's time to get one.
This phone has blown me away, completely. The only real issue is the memory management performed by the OS.
Most of these issues you've mentioned are software issues. Hopefully, HTC will push enough updates quickly to fix all of them. However, the devs on XDA Developers are crafty sons of *****es and will make great ROMs for us to flash once we crack the phone open.
Again, if you are expecting a "perfect" experience, move to the iPhone. The iPhone has many limitations to provide its end-users with a "perfect" experience.

That's a bit harsh.
If you flip the One X over and look at the back there are the letters "HTC" prominently displayed. It's their phone, it's their choice to work with AT&T and compromise on things with AT&T. HTC deserves all the blame in the world.
