Emergency Battery Chargers

I have noticed at least 4 threads in the last couple of days on here all discussing various charging options for when on the move.
These devices are often caller Emergency Battery Chargers and there are dozens of them for sale ranging from ones on eBay that cost £1.99 and take a single AA battery to solutions that cost 50 times that.
So as battery life is a hot topic and I am sure all the new owners are looking at options, perhaps we could use this thread to discuss the various products out there.
So if you have bought one of these things, why not post your experience here with details on where you got it and how well it works (or doesn't)

i bought one from ebay, sold by gpsforless-uk. its a small white box that comes with loads of attachments for other devices, eg ipods, nokias etc.
i have found it to be great for what it does- it gives my desire 1 whole charge, comes with an extendable cable too so can harge it 'handsfree'!
cost £14.99 and for my uses is perfect, i have a charger in the car and the stock one at home.
the coolest thing about is that i can charge the phone and the charger at the same time.

Must admit that the ProPorta kit is excellent however I have now settled on this

The main reason is that it can charge at 1000mA so the Desire registers it as an AC charger rather than a USB one (look at the battery info when charging).
At 4400mAH it is slightly higher capacity than the ProPorta but it charges quicker (and lets be honest, the Desire is not the quickest phone to charge). It is also a little smaller.
Having said that though, the ProPorta is also available without the ProPorta badge on here

For half the price. Makes it a bargain but does make you question how PP can charge almost double!
So whilst I love the PP kit, the Mobile Gum charges the phone in less time so for me, that gives it the edge.
If budget is more limited then the non branded equivalent of the ProPorta is a no brainer.

I think fuel cells have to be the future. The challenge now is to make them smaller and cheaper to a point where this technology will actually replace the battery inside a phone or other mobile device.
I have heard that Toshiba are doing a lot of work in this area with laptop batteries but early days.

Nice case - i saw these on the instructables as well.
But one question - isn't 5000mAh @ 1.2v? meaning 3.7v is about 2200mah?

The output voltage seems abit high but seems it can charge an iphone. Cant seem to find anything about the manufacturer or its dimensions.
Would be a winner if it could be trusted!

the only thing id say is that some of the cheaper chargers do not delivery enough voltage, in one bad experience i found that one AA booster actually drained the battery.
I've brought a powermonkey which is the bees knees. I get 1.5 charges out of it and the whole device serves as a charger for all my other devices too, as it delivers a nice 5.2 v and has many attachments. I believe there are a lot of competitors now with comparable functionality.

giving me up to 3 loads for the desire. And additional it has two usb-output-ports, so that you can also charge two phones at once (last time i use it with my girlfriend, we both laying in the sun and both enjoying music the whole day). Maximum Output is 500mA, so if u are heavy using your phone it runs out of energy

it has an build in 3000mAh Accupack and is able to load my desire twice. The solar Panels are very good, the 3000mAh-Akku is loaded in one Day (with good sunlight). I tried to hear mp3-music and read a book with aldiko, and after 6 hours the capacyty of my desire doesnt drop. So u can load the et-3000 at daylight and reload your desire overnight. But u cant heavy use your phone, but good for light use the phone when you are out of civilisation somwhere in the middle of nothing ;o)

OK ive taken a punt on the 5000mah one as I figure its perfect for taking on holiday and charging 2 phones. I have a spare battery in my wallet for on the move power.

the desire charges with no "AC"-sign, so probably with 500mA max. The Manual says, that it delivers 500mA on every USB-plug. So maybe it is possible to manipulate it and using both plugs for 1A.

OK arrived today so gotta give the ebay seller credit.
See pic - states on the box it charges at 700mah with a capacity of 5000mah so thats pretty good. Also says it can charge an iphone 4.5 times. Charges off a micro USB so need to carry another cable now which is a shame but at least i dont need another AC adapter.

OK so im sending the power junkie 5000mah back to the guy as it appears to be faulty. Such a shame because its a really nice piece of kit and the double USB sockets were a bonus.
Basically it charges my desire fully once and they fails half way through a second charge dropping from fully bars on the indicator to emtpy. Anyone else get one of these? Im not sure whether to try a replacement or get a refund and try the pebble.
On the chargers I dont think the cable really matters (although you can have chargeonly cables which do not sync) its all about whether the pins are shorted at source on the charger itself. Think about the USB that came with your phone - the cable has all 4 pins open as you can use for sync, its the charger where the difference lies.

Anyone tried the Freeloader Pico (Pico) device? I know people think solar is pretty rubbish to charge a device, but once the Freeloader is charged, say by USB, do you think you'd get a full Desire charge from the specs? Pretty cheap for £14.

these are good. Ive got 2 and I usually get 2-3 charges out of it whilst still using the phone and they charge at AC rate (only when using the supplied cable, other wise 500ma with a standard usb cable)

but they used to be £20 a month ago, now they are more expensive than the veho pebble (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/images/B003F5WEMO/ref=dp_image_z_0?ie=UTF8&n=560798&s=electronics) which has a much nicer cosmetic finish to it so id probably choose the pebble now (they are essentially both the same device with different branding)

Those are all cheap toys.
You need something real to get the job done right and look good while doing it.

I bought it a month ago, same storage capacity as the one you're looking at, comes with USB cable and 2 adaptors (mini & micro usb) which is just enough to charge the pack and your phone respectively. Or a phone with a mini usb port...
I haven't done any serious benchmarking, but I'd estimate about 3 "full" charges. The pack itself does take some time to charge up, since it's filling up 500mah and I do it via the PC usb port, so a direct wall charge would probably be faster.
I use it as a top up, so normally I plug it the phone in for an hour or so, take it to 80% charge. Haven't done any 0-100 trials
There are a couple more vendors on Amazon, check them out. I have noticed that the price of this model varies over time: I bought it at 22.95GBP, then saw it at 29.95, and now it's 25...

I would think so. I'm not sure about the output the battery pack receives from my USB port (I have 2 ports on the laptop, and one is connected to a hub with 10 outputs of which 5 are normally in use, which is where the pack is recharged from) - but the wall chargers are normally faster in my experience.

Anyway, a slower charge is always recommended, as it's said that the battery performs better with slow chargers, and I can tell you it's truth, I now onlye charge the phone via USB and seems to have a better battery life(not much better, but still, bit better)

well, I have buy the one I posted and I charged with htc wall charger (it will charge my phone 3 times), that's good but today when I try to charge it again it's say that it's empty. I plug it in charger and in 5 min it's full. (it's take around 2 hour to full charge). when I plug my phone back on - to charge it - it's working normal.... it's that ok or it's going to final/death

It sounds like it isn't working properly, though I'm sure you noticed .

Wow... that looks physically identical (but in white) to the New Trent 5000mah casing. Even the charge/discharge indicators and button.

note these all charge via the mini usb conector , not the micro charger one that the desire HD uses,
its about the size of the phone again, so not an everyday item to carry around, but when your away from a power source for a day or two it does the job well.

I bought this product, but I personally wouldn't really recommend it.
The good:
- Easy convenient to recharge phone
- Include MicroUSB within the unit itself - no extra wires need to be carried
- Included flashlight
- Slim, sleek design
The bad:
- Battery charge remaining hard to see in the sun
- Requires a long time to recharge back to full
- Is supposed to have a 3200 mAH battery life, aka 2 recharges, but barely gives me 1.25 charges on a OEM battery
However it is really cheap at $21.

Expecting two recharges from a 3200 mAH source is completely unrealistic due to fact that energy transfer across such media is never efficient.

I got my anker slimtalk yesterday, it looks good, supper slim, easier to take than having an extra battery and having to open up the phone and replace it. And it charge fast as well.

I've been using this for about a month now. I can say that the plug is off and on, meaning it doesn't seat too well and can be charged in a certain position, users may vary. But when it works, it's a handy thing to have just in case you need an extra boost.

I got something very similar in design and size from a local super market (Asda).
It has a 5000mah battery and 2x USB ports on.
Was £8.
It's now gone up to £15:

Yes similar, but the anker has the cord built in. That was the buying factor for me.

did you try doing a double charge using the built in micro cord + an external usb cord? this is good for sharing a power source otg.

just a lol info on the anker slimtalk. I did about 3 charging cycles and then put it to the test. I drained my mugen 2600 mah on my hd2 to 3% and connected the slimtalk. I was able to charge to 75% before the slimtalks juice ran out. I'm no math expert but all I got was 72% of 3200 mah. still the slimtalk satisfies my needs for emergency power.

I wasn't really expecting the slimtalk to keep my device at capacity. Just to have enough juice ICE.
I do love it for being thin enough and light enough to fit in my back pocket on the go. I have enough crap to lug around when going out, especially with a 3 year old.

yeah im in the same boat as you. i keep in in my tablet bag when i go to work. i have a lil correction on my post though. i said 72% of 3200mah when i meant 72% of 2600mah. (mugen battery = 2600, on a 3% charge it went to 75%) that would make the slimtalk roughly a 2000mah power bank and not a 3200mah. thats unless it takes roughly 1200mah just to transfer the juice over.

The problem you've highlighted there is present in all these devices.
The battery that is rated at 3200mah is running at 3.7v. The device then has to up that voltage to 5v to input into the phone to then charge the phones 3.7v battery.
With my 5000mah charger I can get just over a couple of charges out of it. Very handy when away from a power source for a couple of days etc.

you have a point but a way to answer that is to say... what if you need to charge anything else that takes a usb cord. (bluetooth headset, ipod, zune, tablet, a friends phone.) i like nerdy things like this charger bank.
dont try this at home! slimtalk+usb hub+hd2+i9000+t989 lol. mind you that your only going to get a 15-20% charge on each

For some reason, the charge dissipates quickly even when not in use. It seems that it loses 25% of battery life every day or two.
I fully charged it, then plugged my phone in a few days later in an emergency. It clicked at 50%.
As of now, I wouldn't recommend this device. I'd say, buy an extra battery instead. Anker batteries are good but this is crap.

That's weird because I don't charge my slimcharger every day. It's been sitting on my dresser for over a week and everytime I get dressed in my closet (walk in) I press the button to see if it did dissipate at all and mine still shows full even after a weeks time.

portable charger, solve your battery issues once and for all!

i do alot of snowboarding, which typically involves alot of battery being used for my headphones/ internet radio and gps trail maps. there are also alot of situations where i am not able to have access to an outlet when needed. the one s has fairly decent battery life for a smart phone, but lets be honest, smart phone batteries suck. rather then mess with roms and optimizing battery life to squeeze an extra hour or 2 of usage i decided to just grab an external battery. i also dont like having much bulk in my pocket so i wanted something slim that was close to the same dimensions as the one s.
what i bought is the ultra slim touch control 4000mah mobile charger by power rover off of ebay for $39.99. its roughly the same width and thickness as the one s and is about 1.5cm shorter ( 65X115.5X7.5mm). its also constructed of aluminum so it matches the phone well. its got a nice heavy weight and feels solid and not cheap in any way. it has a similar feel and shape of an ipod classic.
the charger uses the same micro usb as the one s for charging, then it uses a standard usb port for the power output. the charger comes with a small usb to micro usb cable roughly 6" or 8" long, and also comes with a few adapters for different charging ports. the great thing about the included cable is that it can be used to charge the charger, then flipped into the outlet port and plugged directly into the one s so you shouldnt need to mess with multiple cables. i wouldnt say the cable is very high quality but should get the job done for a while.
ive now had some time to play with it an get an idea of the performance. the charger will fully charge in about 4 hours, and charges the one s in a similar amount of time as using the usb adapter. after completely draining my phone to the point where it wont power on anymore then plugging in the charger i was able to get 1.56 charges with practically zero use on the phone. in real world terms id bet you could get a full charge and a little more if you had heavy usage while charging. im a little disappointed as i was hoping for 2 full charges but its still completely usable. i dont have any other experience with portable chargers so i cant really compare its claimed output and real world figures. another small problem is the battery status is completely inaccurate. the charger drained to "25%" within 45minutes of charging, however that last 25% was able to finish off that charge, then charge a 2nd time to 56% so should be taken with a grain of salt.
with the phone stacked ontop of the charger its approximately 5/8" thick, and with it stacked using my distronic case its about 3/4". not exactly thin but pretty impressive considering it can extend your use about 1.5 times and your average cell phone was that thick (or larger) not to long ago.

Looks interesting and would like to hear how many chargers it manages. Looking at it some small plastic grips could be glued on to use it like a phone cradle which can be picked up cheap on ebay then modded for purpose. Depending on how it performs I may get myself one of these.

Agreed this is the way to go. I bought a 9900 mAh that has 2 usb outputs. As I also have a smartwatch.(what I really bought it for LOL) anyways glad someone else also decided to try these things out. I love my portable charger if people are interested ill do a review of mine

These portable battery chargers are great. I had picked on up from frys after killing my battery in a half day taking and streaming pictures for an event I went to. I can't remember off the top of my head who makes it, but I can get almost 3 charges out of it. It also has the second usb port for a tablet.
I can look at the model when I get home if anyone is interested.

I haver recently purchased a power bank MKPBST-002. However, when I received it, I plugged it int an outlet for first charge but it apparently did not work. I tried to charge the power bank both in power and laptop but any led switched on. Could you help me to start up my power bank?

Yup, I (re)found the USB version.

Fasttech USB Qi Charger

Says Qi and works with N4, but can't find it in the Qi site and there's no Qi symbol on it, so probably not approved (but neither are all the N4's currently out there [pre-rev 12])
$40 shipped and could be the basis of an in-car solution...

On an unrelated note, I've never heard of this website before, it looks very promising! I have a feeling I will be throwing my money at my screen soon.

Efficient output is just 500-700mA? Too small to charge N4?
I thought the standard one is around 1A or over.

500-700 mA is perfectly ok for charging. When you charge from a computer via USB, the max current is 500 mA unless you use kernel tweaks.

It's got to depend on the output (mA) the USB power adaptor has to offer too. They even show it connected to a laptop USB port. So I think it WILL charge, but maybe significantly slower than a direct power connection.
By using a lower output USB power supply, sounds like you might be able to trade charge speed with temperature rise. If so it may be ideal as a charger to keep your phone topped up. Kind of like a low power trickle charger, which would be fine if my phone is on it most of the day... I actually don't like the idea of Qi chargers that make the phone get hot - seems to be trading convenience and wear on the phone's USB connector with reduced battery service life as it keeps going through nasty heat cycles?

not sure about that, it might charge If your not doing anything, but say if using gps it might not supply enough juice to charge fast enough

I agree, Used in a car with GPS on, maybe pulling 3G data for maps, bright screen, etc., it's likely that despite this charger, the phone will slowly go flat. And get hot doing so... All that energy from the battery/charger has to go somewhere - mainly heat once the battery is charged. If the phone's consuming, say 750mA at around 4.1v battery voltage, that's around 3W of heat to dissipate.

I am investing time looking for a Qi charger but that problem appears to be present on several cheap alternatives, the current they supply is not enough, or you might expend a couple of extra hours charging your phone

Just a quick update, ordered from fast tech on Jan 29th and received shipping notification today (Jan. 31st), registered airmail with tracking from Hong Kong post.

I do have this wireless charger. Ordered from aliexpress, it's always the same with different branding and logos.
It does the job, charging.
But:
Need to be very precise when positioning it
Back glass make the phone sliding, and cancel all the effort offered in the above point, making the phone not charging
I recommend to wait for a charger with more than only one wireless charging chip/antenna.

Ok I have this charger now. On first charge and working ok so far... Seems to be best in this position. Has now cut off an an indicated 99%...

Lining up the edge of the charger with where the bottom of the LCD is, seems reliable. Using an XtremeGuard style protector on the back, which gives enough friction to stop sliding if the charger is horizontal and the phone vibrates.
Above is FastTech image. I'm using stock N7 charger and cable at the moment because it was handy. Unit came with a USB charger and cable (with EU plug - I'm UK based)

Picked up phone and used it to 98%. Returned to charger and it charged back to 99%, but didn't beep this time when charging started. Maybe it needs to be more discharged before this happens....

Now at 100%. Charger seems to poll the Nexus about every 30 secs (solid blue light for a few secs) to see if it needs charging. Then light goes off. When it charges, the blue light flashes slowly but continuously.

Did anybody try the Large models?
For some reason they are cheaper even though they come in black or white and have the Qi logo/writing on it.

They are reported to work. I wanted the flexibility of being able to use alternate sources of power (car, pc, wall adaptor). have yet to try limited power available from a PC's USB port...
