my battery life solution

Well my battery life is pretty good, I have the 2750mah and I'm running lightning rom 1.5 with the stock kernel and I get a solid 2 days, but just in case I ever decide to go back to the stock battery I made this nifty little thing. It's an altoids case with a portable charger and adapters inside, and the parts list is as follows:
1x 1N4742A 12V Zener Diode $1.59

Both of which are available at radioshack, I also had to cut up an old mini-usb cable for the input.

Lol that is awesome. How long for a full charge?

I haven't tested how long the solar panel will take to charge the battery in the case, but the battery is only 1000mah, so I get another 30% in about an hour, hour and a half ish

quite clever indeed what would happen if you used a couple solar panels in parallel?

I was thinking about it, at 14.99 a piece I just might. They produce 50ma each, so a second in parallel would be 100ma and charge twice as fast.

there are not alot of times when i am not near electricity but i agree for those times when i am this is a sweet idea... camping over the weekend comes to mind.

i wish i had the money/time/resources to bring this to market, it is perfect for camping lol, my fiancee and i spend a week in the catskills every summer and im definitely bringing this along this year

I went a slightly different route. My Altoids charger will charge any USB device from a readily available 9v battery and one battery will get you several charges.

And then my wife completely forgot that I built it and bought me one of these for x-mas.
It's called a Powerstick and has a small lithium battery inside that charges from any USB port, and comes with a bunch of small adapters to fit many different USB devices. The Powerstick cost about $25 + shipping, but the Altoids charger cost me about $15 to build, including having to replace the voltage regulator once after accidentally smoking the first one during assembly. The Powerstick is slimmer, but the Altoids charger wins for geek factor. Also, the powerstick needs charged off USB, whereas I can walk into almost any gas station or Wal-Mart and buy a 9v battery. So the Altoids charger wins on long trips.

mine has a standard usb as well, i just didnt show the proper angle lol, its in the pic below. the portable charger inside mine is an energizer xpal1000

It really depends on how much sunlight you have. Volts X watts determines the time it takes to charge. I am building mine tonight, and my calculations indicate about 8 hours for a full charge in bright sunlight.

Supplies auxiliary power to devices like cellphones. Specs on the Amazon ad state it is compatible with the HTC Sensation. I ordered one and saved $9 using the coupon code: ANKERSWT, which is good until 08/31. My final cost $22.66

I bought this product, but I personally wouldn't really recommend it.
The good:
- Easy convenient to recharge phone
- Include MicroUSB within the unit itself - no extra wires need to be carried
- Included flashlight
- Slim, sleek design
The bad:
- Battery charge remaining hard to see in the sun
- Requires a long time to recharge back to full
- Is supposed to have a 3200 mAH battery life, aka 2 recharges, but barely gives me 1.25 charges on a OEM battery
However it is really cheap at $21.

Expecting two recharges from a 3200 mAH source is completely unrealistic due to fact that energy transfer across such media is never efficient.

I got my anker slimtalk yesterday, it looks good, supper slim, easier to take than having an extra battery and having to open up the phone and replace it. And it charge fast as well.

I've been using this for about a month now. I can say that the plug is off and on, meaning it doesn't seat too well and can be charged in a certain position, users may vary. But when it works, it's a handy thing to have just in case you need an extra boost.

I got something very similar in design and size from a local super market (Asda).
It has a 5000mah battery and 2x USB ports on.
Was £8.
It's now gone up to £15:

Yes similar, but the anker has the cord built in. That was the buying factor for me.

did you try doing a double charge using the built in micro cord + an external usb cord? this is good for sharing a power source otg.

just a lol info on the anker slimtalk. I did about 3 charging cycles and then put it to the test. I drained my mugen 2600 mah on my hd2 to 3% and connected the slimtalk. I was able to charge to 75% before the slimtalks juice ran out. I'm no math expert but all I got was 72% of 3200 mah. still the slimtalk satisfies my needs for emergency power.

I wasn't really expecting the slimtalk to keep my device at capacity. Just to have enough juice ICE.
I do love it for being thin enough and light enough to fit in my back pocket on the go. I have enough crap to lug around when going out, especially with a 3 year old.

yeah im in the same boat as you. i keep in in my tablet bag when i go to work. i have a lil correction on my post though. i said 72% of 3200mah when i meant 72% of 2600mah. (mugen battery = 2600, on a 3% charge it went to 75%) that would make the slimtalk roughly a 2000mah power bank and not a 3200mah. thats unless it takes roughly 1200mah just to transfer the juice over.

The problem you've highlighted there is present in all these devices.
The battery that is rated at 3200mah is running at 3.7v. The device then has to up that voltage to 5v to input into the phone to then charge the phones 3.7v battery.
With my 5000mah charger I can get just over a couple of charges out of it. Very handy when away from a power source for a couple of days etc.

you have a point but a way to answer that is to say... what if you need to charge anything else that takes a usb cord. (bluetooth headset, ipod, zune, tablet, a friends phone.) i like nerdy things like this charger bank.

For some reason, the charge dissipates quickly even when not in use. It seems that it loses 25% of battery life every day or two.
I fully charged it, then plugged my phone in a few days later in an emergency. It clicked at 50%.
As of now, I wouldn't recommend this device. I'd say, buy an extra battery instead. Anker batteries are good but this is crap.

That's weird because I don't charge my slimcharger every day. It's been sitting on my dresser for over a week and everytime I get dressed in my closet (walk in) I press the button to see if it did dissipate at all and mine still shows full even after a weeks time.

Many companies make these types of chargers. There are even the type you can put the AA batteries into that companies like Duracell and Rayovac make as well that are only like 15 bucks at walmart.
I had a friend use one of these chargers on their ipod touch and it seemed to work great.

I picked up two of these a while ago, they work fantastically great.
I carry them in a portable hard drive case, it holds both.
You can just plug in anything with a usb cord and charge it - charges this phone, my nook color, my verizon dumb phone, my girls' phone and both of our digital cameras.
Does not charge my friends archos 7o tablet for some reason. Tablet won't read power input from the battery pack.

you mistake bro! it's not used for put the AA batteries into it, it's a rechargeable battery itself. i already have one for a month, see my attachments. works so good, 5600mAh capacity, it definitly put 3 full charge cycle on my phone after itself full charged, let me easily get through 4-5 days with out power. so amazing, insn't it?

External battery pack for all uses-
I have been using the ZaggSparq for a while, and it is great. Charges multiple devices when plugged into power, and the battery pack has indicator lights for those (like me) who fret that power will die before I finish my tasks.

Congrats, you'll like having an external battery you can juice up with on the go.
I know the Energizer ones I linked to earlier have been serving me well since long before I got this device - talk about having a digital camera juiced for a whole weekend camping trip with no power to be found otherwise.
In the case of the doubleshot, something like this is a veritable lifesaver.
Given the reputation Anker has rightfully earned, i'd love to hear how well that works out for you. My energizer battery packs have one big flaw - they need a proprietary AC adapter to charge them (come from a time before standardizing those things was as important as it is today)
I'd love to swap over to something I can centralize my charging with - does the output of your wall adapter match the output of the wall adapter for the doubleshot? ( 5v 1A )
If so that's one AC block for both ...

I am on a kick to minimize the amount of extra BS I need to carry with me.
My current energizer battery packs are 4000mAh but require a proprietary A/C charging cable - so their portability is somewhat compromised by being able to re-charge them on the road.
I've had them for a long while, longer then i've had this phone, and at the time simply having usb battery available was the concern and the price was right to not quibble over details.
Now, though, buying something new has new requirements, which this item is near to meeting. One of which is standardizing of cables.
I have a retractable mini-usb cable, so i'm ahead of the game on the recharge cable for this battery pack - but it's not quite the micro-usb that the doubleshot uses and that would eliminate having another cable entirely.
( The redeeming factor that makes this an okay consideration, or at least an acceptable exemption for this ONE situation with cables - PS3 controller is mini-usb so when I get that working it'll be the same cable anyway... )
...at the price on the daily steals website, not getting this I think would be a mistake on my part. Being able to recharge it out in the wild (because I don't bring the energizer AC with me unless it's an actual trip, so aren't part of my daily arsenal) is a step forward.
It says compatible with all apple AC power blocks, so that'll work with the slim HTC AC/USB power block we have, it's the smallest one i've found and should work with my car adapter so I can keep it topped off.
Browsing through tha Amazon reviews leads to the notion that the power button is raised a bit and turns itself on if bumped, but I don't carry things like this out in the world without it's own case anyways so that just means it needs a hardshell one. Figure that out once I physically have it.
I don't like that it doesn't stop discharging on device full, but you can't win them all and in my experience I rarely actually fill the device while it's on the battery pack, it more turns into a cord running into my pocket until I get back up to 80% or so.
I used the doubleshot all night at a wedding I was the best man in, pictures and video, and what I did was to feed the power cord through my belt loops and into my back pocket, where I had the energizer battery pack. That kept it close to my body so people didn't get caught up with it, and I was able to work my way through the crowd of dancing people taking pictures and video using the battery pack in my pocket, having run the stock battery into the ground long before.
Reviews also lead to the notion that you can't charge a device with the battery pack while charging the pack itself, so that's a point of contention to be handled on the next upgrade after this one.
After having passed on the Mugen extended battery this week, too, this seems like a workable compromise on the road to consolidation.
9 hours left before it's a much less attractive options...

It came in today, I was only at my house for a few minutes but it's literally just a bit smaller then the doubleshot with a trident case on.
I plugged it in to charge it up, and when I eventually get home later I'll take a handful of pictures so you can see.
I haven't actually used it yet, but if it's anything like I expect it to be I think I'm going to be sad I only bought one.

Looks great! i also found a RAVPower RP-PB03 on amazon seems the same appearance and specifications as the ANKER one except the price, $4 lower than anker, only 29.99+ free shipping.

portable charger, solve your battery issues once and for all!

i do alot of snowboarding, which typically involves alot of battery being used for my headphones/ internet radio and gps trail maps. there are also alot of situations where i am not able to have access to an outlet when needed. the one s has fairly decent battery life for a smart phone, but lets be honest, smart phone batteries suck. rather then mess with roms and optimizing battery life to squeeze an extra hour or 2 of usage i decided to just grab an external battery. i also dont like having much bulk in my pocket so i wanted something slim that was close to the same dimensions as the one s.
what i bought is the ultra slim touch control 4000mah mobile charger by power rover off of ebay for $39.99. its roughly the same width and thickness as the one s and is about 1.5cm shorter ( 65X115.5X7.5mm). its also constructed of aluminum so it matches the phone well. its got a nice heavy weight and feels solid and not cheap in any way. it has a similar feel and shape of an ipod classic.
the charger uses the same micro usb as the one s for charging, then it uses a standard usb port for the power output. the charger comes with a small usb to micro usb cable roughly 6" or 8" long, and also comes with a few adapters for different charging ports. the great thing about the included cable is that it can be used to charge the charger, then flipped into the outlet port and plugged directly into the one s so you shouldnt need to mess with multiple cables. i wouldnt say the cable is very high quality but should get the job done for a while.
ive now had some time to play with it an get an idea of the performance. the charger will fully charge in about 4 hours, and charges the one s in a similar amount of time as using the usb adapter. after completely draining my phone to the point where it wont power on anymore then plugging in the charger i was able to get 1.56 charges with practically zero use on the phone. in real world terms id bet you could get a full charge and a little more if you had heavy usage while charging. im a little disappointed as i was hoping for 2 full charges but its still completely usable. i dont have any other experience with portable chargers so i cant really compare its claimed output and real world figures. another small problem is the battery status is completely inaccurate. the charger drained to "25%" within 45minutes of charging, however that last 25% was able to finish off that charge, then charge a 2nd time to 56% so should be taken with a grain of salt.
with the phone stacked ontop of the charger its approximately 5/8" thick, and with it stacked using my distronic case its about 3/4". not exactly thin but pretty impressive considering it can extend your use about 1.5 times and your average cell phone was that thick (or larger) not to long ago.

Looks interesting and would like to hear how many chargers it manages. Looking at it some small plastic grips could be glued on to use it like a phone cradle which can be picked up cheap on ebay then modded for purpose. Depending on how it performs I may get myself one of these.

Agreed this is the way to go. I bought a 9900 mAh that has 2 usb outputs. As I also have a smartwatch.(what I really bought it for LOL) anyways glad someone else also decided to try these things out. I love my portable charger if people are interested ill do a review of mine

These portable battery chargers are great. I had picked on up from frys after killing my battery in a half day taking and streaming pictures for an event I went to. I can't remember off the top of my head who makes it, but I can get almost 3 charges out of it. It also has the second usb port for a tablet.
I can look at the model when I get home if anyone is interested.

The mine doesn't work
I haver recently purchased a power bank MKPBST-002. However, when I received it, I plugged it int an outlet for first charge but it apparently did not work. I tried to charge the power bank both in power and laptop but any led switched on. Could you help me to start up my power bank?

Poor performance of Choetech Adaptive Fast Charger, 5 port 60 watt

I've been a fan of Anker chargers (and other products) as they tend to be high quality and fairly affordable. I have several of the 5 port chargers floating around my home and office that I use to keep various gadgets juiced up throughout the day. I was hoping to find a multi-port charger that was also Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 capable so I could bring it with me when I travel. Choetech is the first company I've found on Amazon that advertises a multi-port charger with 2 QC 2.0 capable ports, so I picked one up.
Physically it's about the same size as every other multi-port charger on the market. What's immediately obvious as different though is how light the unit is. It weighs in 5.6 oz (158g) which is less than half the weight of the Anker 60W charger which competes head to head. In this case, I don't think that's a good thing. I haven't cut it open yet but I'm guessing it doesn't have the proper internals to handle power. The other weird physical attribute is that it has recessed USB ports. The actual ports are sunken in by a fifth of an inch (half a cm). I guess the cables can still make contact however, it's a puzzling design decision as you'd imagine that the more contact area the better for power transfer.

Something odd I noticed right away is my Note 4 wouldn't consistently register the charger as fast charger. I swapped out cables, tried unplugging cables from the other ports, jumped and spun around a few times, etc. With my Anker QC 2.0 charger, it would register as a fast charger every single time. I first thought something was amiss after leaving my 2013 Nexus 7 attached to a "standard" port for several hours and then came back to find the battery percentage had only risen 16%. That's really really low.
I reached out to Choetech customer service and they sent me a replacement unit citing the original unit as faulty. It shipped directly from China and took a few weeks. Comparing the two chargers side by side it's clear they've been making small changes to the text on the unit, font size/weight, as well as changing the stated power output from the fast charge ports. At the end of the day it doesn't matter though.
So I tried to be fairly rigorous in my testing and tracked battery percentage over time as well as charge rate over time. A real QC 2.0 charger will hit a charge delta of 80% per hour during bulk charging and taper off as the battery nears full capacity. The Choetech charger comes in at a measly 10% per hour. I put it on at 40% battery and it took all night to get to 100%. You can see from the graph that the charger behavior is to switch on an off instead of providing a clean source of power.
I've attached the same graph (same phone, battery, cable, etc.) with the same axes and time scale but hooked up to a standard charger (non QC 2.0) and it hits a 50% charge rate easily before tapering off. I've verified across two units and two different devices that the Choetech charger is a complete sham when it comes to meeting its advertised specs. I ended up returning my original unit to Amazon and the 2nd unit to the seller in New Jersey.
Reading through the reviews on Amazon, either they're shill reviews or they're from people who haven't actually taken a hard look at what the charger is doing. I'll admit, it does seem to "charge" your devices, but at a snails pace.

I bought one of these units recently. Mainly to charge my non QC2 device.
I thought I'd get one, for when I get the Note 4 or S6.
Anyway, I returned it, it charged slower than my original plugs.
Hopefully another company will release a multi port charger with QC2 soon.

I'm waiting for these to become available. The 3 and 5 port models look enticing.

Yes, number 3 and 5 is what I'd be interested in too.
Hopefully Amazon UK or similar will stock them.
