For all of those still waiting to root their phone until "the dust has settled", "it is confirmed save", "more people have tried it", "instructions become easier" etc let's get a quick count of how many people have managed so far without bricking their phone.
No problems here. I used grankin01's Guide to permaroot and s=off!!!!! and was rooted without problems within 3 minutes. (used root explorer instead of adb)
I did.
My MyGlacier 4G MINE!!!
I did! It went pretty much according to the directions except when I rebooted I wasn't rooted, so I had to run visionary one more time and rebooted and perm root after that.

LOL Thanks again man!
Not a problem.
My MyGlacier 4G MINE!!!
Likewise, I used Root Explorer and entered all the commands through Terminal Emulator.
I actually recommend this method, as people seemed to be having trouble with the ADB bits.
BTW, thanks Grankin01 in the event I hadn't said thanks already!

I did my root process thru adb, but I'm used to doing most everything through adb
I rooted and removed a few of the unwanted apps like Amazon MP3, T-Mobile App pack, and a few of the games....
Went very smoothly!
I'm waiting until my grace period is over, as I'm still a bit unsure as to whether I want to keep the white, or go back for the Black/red that I originally wanted.
I did too, very easy root
I did as well

Woopty doo. What is the point of this thread? You want a cookie because you are rooted? I don't get it.
This was the easiest root I've done. Took me about 5 minutes.
I rooted. Finally got rid of all the bloatware. Now all I have to wait for is remapping the Genius button. Oh, and CyanogenMod support.
everything seems to be working on mine.

Are you trying to temp root or perm root?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
I'm actually trying to perm root but the guide I'm reading says I have to temp root first, and this app won't work
you can find out if your temp rooted by bringing up your terminal emulator and typing the letters "su" and if u get access denied then ur not temp rooted and if you get a "#" symbol then u are temp rooted and go ahead and proceed to perm root phone.

That is exactly what is supposed to happen. I am paraphrasing here, but this is the process:
1. Temproot via VISIONary
2. type 'su' via Terminal
3. Run the root.sh script (which you already downloaded to your microSD card)
4. Reboot
5. Permaroot via VISIONary
I understand that for some, it gets a bit "blurry" over on the Guide to permaroot thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225
...but grankin01 did a really great job at outlining the steps. Again, borrowing from his thread...
1. Download the root.rar file and unzip it to /sdcard on your device.
2. Run VISIONary to gain temp root.
3a. Start terminal emulator up on your device.(I prefer this method b/c you can see the output.)
a. type "su" + enter to gain root privileges.
b. Type "cd /sdcard/root" + enter.
c. Type "sh root.sh" + enter.
d. Follow the on screen prompts.
---
c. Now wait about 18 to 20 seconds and restart your device
5. Run visionary again and reboot again. This will make root stick.

I have done this on 6 MT4G's thus far and it couldn't be any easier. Other than the reboot itself, this literally takes like 30-60 seconds. I have used VISIONary R14 each and every time and I have never, not once, run into an issue.
Just make sure and read, re-read and then re-re-read again. The 'reboot' is in those steps, but again, I understand how some might miss it.
Let us know how you make out!
As stated above, r14 works just like that! (Did for me.) I think your problem may be that you are still on 2.2 and i believe r14 pre req is that you be on 2.2.1

Good call Fishy. I think it comes down to this, OP. It looks like you've missed a few steps thus far, at least one - i.e. you didn't reboot and then attempt permaroot. Make sure you're on 2.2.1 as Fishy stated and make sure you haven't missed a step. It sounds like the one thing every person on this forum will scream until they're blue in the face - i.e. read, read and read some more...then read it again - was missed.

To the OP: are you on 2.3.4 or 2.2.1? I'm surprised no one has asked this!

I believe that the OP has rooted his phone since January 2011. That would also probably be the reason why nobody asked him - it wasn't available back then
The only reason this post is up, is the question 2 posts above me. But why would anyone want to bring an old thread back with absolutely unrelated question - escapes me.

Please place all of your discussions about obtaining root on the Evo Shift here.
Temp root:Temporary root can be acheived a number of ways on the shift the easiest being either z4root app or the visionary plus root app.
Z4root:
download here and install as you would any other apk
open the app and hit temporary root
let it run till you are notified of its success
you now have temporary root!!
*Note you have to reapply z4 each time you reboot your phone
Visionary:
full instructions and the link to visionary can be found here. http://android.modaco.com/content/h...m/320722/19-nov-r14-visionary-one-click-root/
IMPORTANT NOTE!
PLEASE DO NOT ACCEPT ANY OTA UPDATES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
they patched the root exploit on the desire z when they updated you can most definitely expect them to do the same for the shift so please for that sake of everybody being able to get proper root do not accept any updates unless further notified!!!
unless you just dont care about root that is.....
so far, we got a temporary root.
No point in trying unrevoked as it scans for the device name and shows
"sorry, the device 'speedy' is not suppored" (paraphrasing)
wish i knew alittle more about this.
You can get to hboot by Holding down the vol down while powering on
Also in a previous thread bubby323 requested a dump of /system and dnalevelc obliged:
* http://www.digglesworth.net/evoshift/system.7z
In another forum (androidcentral) someone noted that an app called VISIONary works to auto temp-root the Shift upon boot.
* http://android.modaco.com/content/h...m/320722/19-nov-r14-visionary-one-click-root/
Edit: Also there's code to temp root the G2 using a different exploit below. I haven't attempted to run it on my Shift. Possibly not relevant since it has a newer version but could be if an update is pushed to the Shift:
* https://github.com/tmzt/g2root-kmod/tree/scotty2/scotty2/psneuter
got the shift today. MAN this thing is fast! i'd love to see unrevoked release a small update that supports the shift. otherwise i can do it the long way but i can't wait to see the scores once i get a custom ROM on it.
Visonary does work, I turned on temproot on boot and then i pressed temproot now and it rebooted the phone. The phone was either taking its time or got stuck on the 4G for 2-3 mins so I pulled the battery and started the phone up again. I installed connectbot and typed su and got a #. Tried the reboot command and it wouldn't let me so I went into root explorer and it prompted the su app, gave it permission and started hacking away at bloatware..... no luck, it still came back from the grave :\
I successfully Temp rooted with z4root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953) and I couldnt get the download off the market so I just went to 4shared.com and searched z4root and picked up 1.3.0 which is the latest version....
It worked great and I used Titanium back up and a screen shot app that both needed root.
does anyone think the rageagainstthecage exploit will work on this? i assume people are working on it? cause if it does, that means unrevoked3 could possibly release a new version with shift support, right? since unrevoked is just an automated rageagainstthecage, right?
edit: i mean, for permanent root, S-OFF.

yes, the rage exploit is what works and is what z4root uses. However I couldn't get the actual binary to work from the CLI using adb.

Great tip. It's just a matter of time now...
Just wondering where the MyTouch rates as far as rooting difficulty? Are other android devices generally harder or easier to root? I have rooted 3 MyTouches with no difficulty at all, but it seems like some people have quite the time trying to get it done.
Well the sticky root guide in the developer thread was pretty straight forward. It was my first time rooting and to me the guide was a lot less daunting than others I came across. But for some reason I lost superuser

The MyTouchHD is stupid easy to root. I had it rooted with s=off before i even left the t-mobile store.
I'm in the same boat i have no clue why some people have such a difficult time rooting this phone.
the process i used was
Prior to even getting the phone
Download the VISIONary.apk and stored it on the SDcard
Download the root.sh script file
when i got the phone
installed the Astro File Manager via the market
installed the Term Emulator via the market
installed VISIONary via astro
Ran VISIONary
from the term emulator
Code:
$ su
# cd /sdcard/root
# sh root.sh
and i was rooted with s=off.. no clue why it's so hard to manage to do that.
The method above doesn't work at least for me.... getting real irritated .... root just not sticking can temp root fine.... any advice ive tried over and over reading over and over i memorized the terminal part...pls help i really dont wanna do the gfree way just feels to dangerous to revert
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
I have only used the Gfree way. Yea it would take a little work to go back..but worth it.
Plus if it really came down to it I have insurance on my phone...I would just run it over and suck up the $100 for a new one.
Just use gfree. Its the only method that works %100 when done correctly.

Dude, you guys are doing waaay to much. Safest, fastest most reliable way is always "Super One-Click"... click temp root.. then when its done click regular root. Now u gotta perm root with s=off. Then goto market, install Rom Manager and install CWR and your on your way.
Idk why everyone made it so complicated when its easy as hell the way i just said.
I was stumped reading it because I do NOT like adb at all. But i tried something and found it to work within 10 minutes.
Hope this helps someone out.

I only know that in my own experience it seems hit or miss even with gfree. I've personally attempted rooting 4 different mt4g's with gfree and only 2 of them worked. The other two would not set the system r/w no matter what method I tried (Visionary, one-click, gfree), so I could never get them to root. The two good ones rooted right away with no trouble.

Rooting
Obtaining root ("administrator", or "full") access to the device. This means you can mount its internal memory partition as read/write, which lets you do various things: have USB or Wi-Fi tethering, uninstall applications you otherwise can't uninstall (e.g. the Amazon MP3 store), install applications that need root access (such as AdFree), disable the camera shutter sound (simply by deleting the shutter sound file), overclock or underclock the CPU, install and boot Debian, and so on.
With the ability to root and unroot these days, I don't know why anyone wouldn't root even just to get rid of the bloatware from t-mobile.

so chillll...till the next episode....
First off ...seriously chill. Like the man says as long as you follow directions to the t, you'll be fine. secondly first rule of thumb when modding...anything... dont listen to any one who says "hey TRY this!"
don't try. DO.
I know it sux, but reading is your friend. read read and read some more. GO to the android forums and read there as well(im talking like android general/development)
Chill is your friend. smoke a doob, or drink a brewski, do yoga or whatever it is you do to chill out. The last thing you wanna do is work on your phone/computer/whatever in a frenzied panic state of mind.
rooting is easy.
like the man said super one click. the way to go.
drivers? zip?
check it:
dl zip to desktop. make a folder with said file name. put zip inside. unzip.
right clik and runa s administrator.
your pc will do the rest. hit run or just dbl click or whatever you gotta do
I made a folder "superoneclick" inside is the exe file which should be andy with a red glow.
BUT FIRST make sure you got usb drivers!
usb drivers? easy. No need to worry because if you dont have them your pc wont recognize the phone.
go to lg and get them. OR google. or search this forum.
DL and instal dont worry about where your computer will do that for you!
now plug in your phone
make sure usb debuging is on also probably a good idea to set the "allow unknown aplications"
do not hit "mass storage"
your GTG!
now hit S1C
it should recognize your phone
hit root!
DONE !
Woot!
easy no?
I hate to be an ass but if you are that nervous about it maybe you should wait.
spend a few days reading and when you are confortable....root that bizNATCH!
root rules but....its not the end of the world if you dont have it.
Hey,
I was wondering, is there anyway to gain temproot until we have full root? Am I right in thinking that temproot allows programs requiring root access to work e.g. AdFree?
Thanks

There's an app called gingerbreak which works on the S E Arc (it roots anything on Gingerbread) so I wonder if it will work on the Sensation?
I'm waiting to get mine at the moment...
Hopefully tuesday

Is that saying you need to remove HTC Sync from the device, and then run Gingerbreak?

1. First download the Gingerbreak.apk file.
2. Save on your computers desktop.
3. Connect the phone to your computer. (do not connect using htc sync)
4. Mount SD card as flash drive as you generally do for USB cable file transfers.
5. Copy the downloaded Gingerbread apk file to SD card root.
6. You should have any File Manager (e.g., Astro File Manager) on your phone. If not, download from Market. These are generally free apps.
7. Disconnect your phone from computer and launch File Manager. You will find in the menu of the phone.
8. Follow the onscreen instructions on File Manager to install APK to your phone from SD card root. You may also use the default application installer software to do this.
9. After installation completes, open the APK.
10. Press ‘root’ button. Simple, isn’t it?
11. The APK exploit will run for some time. Usually it runs for around 10 minutes. Your phone will be rebooted. In case it takes more than ten minutes for auto reboot, please reboot it yourself. Not to panic, this happens a lot of times.
12. Your device is now rooted. Congrats!
13. Make sure that SuperUser app is installed and is running. This is very important for you to enjoy the benefits of rooting.
In order to test if your phone has been successfully rooted, just click a screenshot of your phone. That should show that your phone has been rooted.
Yeah, but does it REALLY work?

Gingerbreak exploit is patched on the SGS II so doubt that will work. Also if phone needs to reboot, no way will root persist due to signed locked bootloader. Go ahead and try but we will need some L33t devs to break this phone.

Yeah, I'm not really willing to believe it works either mate.
If the guide has some proof (i.e. a bootloader photo) then I will try it. If not, it's all just based on theory, but nothing practical.

Well, I have tried it, doesn't seem to do a thing so far.
It does say it fails a lot, but still, zero proof that is works, I'm very suspicious that it's all ********
It would be great if we could get this partial root. I personally don't mind not being able to flash custom ROM, but it is very important to me to be able to use some apps that require root permissions like adfree or titanium backup. From what I understand, this 'half-root' should not be very difficult to achieve cause it is not needed to mess with the bootloader for this purpose. The only requirement is to be able to uninstall htc sync for some time.
Here also a link detailing the differences between root levels and clarifying vocabulary. I am posting this cause it has been very useful for me to help understand, so it might also serves others..

Thank you for trying it. I think you should now do a full factory reset, to totally get that thing off your Sensation. It does not do what it's supposed to do and who knows what it might be doing behind the scenes. Yea, be very suspicious!

Yeah, doing a full reset was in the back of my mind. Think I will go do that now
I'm not optimistic thought. They who owns the website emailed me (I posted a comment doubting it, and it was deleted, so I reposted, and he emailed me), to say the guy who posted it hadn't got back to him, so he was removing it from the site until he had confirmation that it did work. I am still VERY sceptical of it. He said, uninstall HTC Sync from the PC, as that causes problems with root? VERY random thing IMHO.

Well, a factory reset and trying to run GingerBreak right after hasn't done a thing. It says to reboot after it doesn't succeed after 10 mins, and that this happens a lot. But EVERY attempt I have been rebooting after 10 mins.
If the guy who "discovered" it can't even post proof, it sounds like a load of ****.

Yea, if they discovered it they can prove their claim with a simple photo.
This speaks to not only the lack of credibility of the person who posted it, but also to the site that allowed it to be posted and remain till the complaints came in. A very untrustworthy source is how I view them because of this.
Gingerbreak won't help you, as there will be a nand lock, and the fact the kernel will be patched...

Yeah, I didn't think it would work to be honest. That really as wishful thinking. The person who posted that seems like a proper idiot
this will work once we get s-off to perminate root and then you can flash the recovery from fastboot or rom manager

Even the website states we need s-off so when that is achieved it will work and i will test it once we find a crack for the radio to get s-off/nand lock.
