Hey guys, I am trying to flash Cognition 2.3b3 from Cognition 2.3b2, and the flash keeps failing in clockwork recovery. I have voodoo lag fix disabled, I flash clockwork recovery, and I have even tried installing the update with the wipe option checked. I keep getting an error during the installation saying "installation aborted. Cannot open /sdcard/Cognition2.3b3.zip.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Did you try redownloading the zip file? It may be a corrupt download?
If not, I wouldn't know since I haven't upgraded to b3 yet
I did try redownloading the zip. I can't figure what the problem is. The file came straight from designgears sight. I do not have winzip installed on my laptop. Could that make a difference?
Just sharing my experiance.
I had stockish eclair with voodoo (deleted one system file by mistake and it wouldn't boot) so i flashed Cognition 2.3b3 thro odin , it went thro without problems kernel detected ext4 present (from previous voodoo) and everything works fine
So you don't need to disable voodoo lag fix if your next rom supports it. And you could also try flashing with odin if clockwork fails.

Give us a Step by step of what you did so we can help further. When asking for help it helps us alot to give as much information as possable
I think I figured out what the problem was. I was deleting some stuff from my internal sd card, and I deleted the update.zip I used to root my phone when it was stock. I didn't think I needed it anymore. The thought occurred to me just now to put that file back, and I was just able to flash the rom. Go figure. Thanks for all of the input guys. I guess I will always need to keep that update.zip on my root sd.

Put this on your internal SD card along with your ROM of choice. Reboot in to recovery and install packages 2 times. The second time it will be in clockwork recovery and you can flash your ROM.
I just had the same problem after doing countless ROM flashes in the past. Perhaps its something in their server preventing the download of CWM? Anyways, thanks for the .zip. Worked like a charm!
yes thank you very much for that zip u saved my life well appreciated
Keep that .zip on your HDD and you can bypass Rom Manager (and all the associated problems) altogether.
I have my phone rooted and unlocked. It's the AT&T Captivate but I'm using it on T-Mobile. I've had no problems so far with it.
I downloaded Clockwork's Rom Manager (v3.0.0.7) and tried to Flash ClockworkMod Recovery to begin experimenting with ROMs.
When I click on that it tells me "An error occurred while downloading your recovery."
I have over 4 gigs of memory left and I have 3 bars on 3g and WiFi going. No internet connection problems (i checked the net using market and using the browser, it works fine.)
What else could be causing the problems.
I'm just wanting to get a good stable rom going which ditches all the junk AT&T put on the phone.

I Can't get the update.zip file to work. After I reinstall packages is says E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip (No such file or derectory) Installation aborted. I've tried it probably 20 times today with no luck.
Thank You
Nothing like flashing to find out it wasn't working. Thanks for making my day go better.

if the update.zip is already on your /sdcard/ then there is no reason to try and download/flash clockwork recovery.....thats what the update.zip IS
thats what i thuoght but not true. even goin in normal recovery and selecting to install packages gets a error some about no such directory or something even though updat.zip is there even fix permissions gives a error
I'm having the exact same problem. After reading the development section I have decided to flash a custom rom from my stock rom. Installed "Rom manger" from market, then tried to run the "recovery" got the same error msg. Also uploaded the update.zip to my /sdcard the I got the below errors:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted

Did you flash back to stock JF6 first not JI6?
try this cuz this is what i did and the update.zip worked just fine for me
1. one click back to stock jf6
2. master clear
3. root with galaxy s one click root
(after the root there should be an update.zip in your sdcard)
4. replace the update.zip in the root of your sd card with the one here posted which is the clockwork recovery one and if you want while u do that you can throw in the rom that you want to flash in there as well to kill 2 birds with one stone
(i will re post the update.zip for cwm just in case)
5. power off the phone and boot into stock recovery and hit reinstall packages two times
6. you should now be in clockwork mod recovery and can now flash the rom of your choice
this is what i did and everything went smoothly but this is just me if this helps someone else plz let me know if this works for you
p.s. i will make a video if needed just ask
Try This
After flashing back to stock do a master clear from Odin3
Put update.zip onto internal sd
Boot into recovery
Reinstall packages
After boot enable USB debugging and mock locations
Get Rom Manager from market
Start Rom Manager
Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
Flash away

You guys are making it harder then necessary, the update zip I posted is the clockwork recovery MOD, just flash stock, reboot into recovery and reinstall packages 2 times and you will be in the green clockwork recovery then you can install zip from sd and choose your ROM you placed on your internal sd card. No need to root every again as long as you keep this update zip handy.
I too am having problems with Rom Manager. I just wanted to change modems. No go. So I used the power button to go into Recovery mode, picked the modem file, flashed it then told the menu to reboot system.

Ok Im on stock 2.2 on my captivate and for the past two days I've been trying to flash Serendipity. Once I've flashed clockwork and then go to install ROM from sd card, when my phone boots into the option menu and I click reinstall packages I get errors "saying package can't be identified". Im in 3e bootmenu I guess because I see that at the top. Im noobish at flashing and Im lost. I've flashed cognition before with no problem . Please help.
in the instructions to install serendipity it says to flash back to stock, this was posted before the 2.2 ota im assuming you might have to flash back to some version of 2.1... im about to try it myself, i just flashed back to 2.1 just for this purpose... ill let u know how it goes, i started this project 1 1/2 days ago and i bricked my captivate trying to get back to stock using odin... becareful... gl
Yea you should always flash back to 2.1 before doing anything else; find the Odin program and use that.

problem with flashing Serendipity 6.3
I was running 2.2 and have done a lot of reading a video watching (thanks Mobile Tech videos) and finally conjured the guts to flash serendipity.
I flashed stock using odin...that went great. Copied the update.zip to sd card. Installed zip twice in 2e recovery. Copied Serendipity.zip file to sd card. started in recovery mode, selected "install from sdcard" selected serendipity.zip file and it seemed to go through that process rather quickly. Then I selected reboot and then everything just started FCing all over the place. Help please. I can get it back into recovery mode. Tried doing the wipe data/factory reset. That did help either. Help please. I really want to try serendipity. Thanks again in advanced.
I have a NS unlocked and rooted. I have ROM Manager, busybox etc. I followed all the instructions but I can't update ROMs or the 2.3.3 update or CM7 nothing. Each time it starts to unpack or whatever it gets about 1/3 the way and aborts. Something about verifying signatures or something.
Very frustrating.
Thanx in advance

try to download the ROM again
sounds like the zip file is corrupted
What version Clockwork Recovery are you using? Try reverting back to a older version or something.
Verify the ROM's MD5 Hash using HashTab (Google it)
I've tried several times with downloads and now the latest clockwork and the version prior.
Samething always aborts, can't verify signature. Tried manual and through rom manager.
When using rom manager is that suppose to do the whole install? Cuz that only gets me to the little droid and the triangle. I have to get myself into bootloader and continue manually from there.
Thanks

Hmm... It sounds like clockwork isn't properly installed. ROM Manager should take you directly to clockwork recovery without you having to do anything.
the problem you are facing is that you are still on stock rom. so even if you flash clockwork recovery and then reboot to recovery, you'll always end up going to the stock recovery. this is a new feature implemented by google.
what you should do is...
1) go to bootloader
2)flash the clockwork recovery using fastboot
3)DO NOT reboot the phone or quit bootloader. immediately after flashing the rec. using fastboot, just enter recovery (through bootloader)
4)flash you new rom
just for u to have an idea. the recovery should be orange in colour.
option 2.
you also have the option of using a file manager with moun/root functions such as root explorer and rename the recovery script in etc folder but i guess step 1 is much easier for now.
OK I played alot today and this is what happened.
After fixing permissions and flashing the new CWM and wiping data/cache it finally worked. Unfortunately titanium and my backup didnt bring everything over. So I went back and forth between stock and CM7 several times but I just couldnt get all my stuff back in CM7. So I thought Id try the 2.3.3 update but not wiping stuff. That didnt work. Then I tried one more time with CM7 but not wiping. I couldnt get pastthe little CM7 droid on the skateboard. So went back to stock for now. Ill have more time on Sat to give things another try.
At least I can get in it now.
Any ideas/thoughts/
Thanks and sorry for the long post.
My buddy has the inspire 4g. He bought it rooted by somebody else. I've flashed cynogenmod for him aqnd several updates over the past few months. We are trying to flash new roms and its constantly aborting. Ive rooted my droids and always flash roms and never run into this problem.
He has the newest clockwork mod should we possible get a different recovery?
I don't do anything with flashing a new radio, is that necesary and whats causing the problem?
I am trying to flash core droid or revolution, he wants the best sense rom any suggestions?
I would appreciate any help. If there is no way to fix it I planned to totally reset and unroot and then root it myself and make sure everything is done right, does that sound right?

Though probably not necessary, the peace of mind that comes with knowing what's been done to the phone from the ground up might be worth it.
As for a fix to your current issue, please provide a little more detail as to the error.
It clears the cache and everything like that but it has a line that says installing update then the next line is installation aborted. That happens very quickly when I try to apply the update.zip

Is this the same SD card for every try? It might be a flakey SD card. Try a different card if you can.
I have several sd cards so will try the one I use. Am going over to help him in a few hours. Anyone have other suggestions? Should I be able to just flash a rom or do I have to flash a new radio also? <Because Ive only done cynogen on his which didnt have a radio.
Thanks again.

Radio is not usually flashed as part of the ROM. As long as you have a valid radio, it should work. If you somehow managed to get an invalid radio flashed, then you've have bigger problems that you indicate (i.e. hard bricked).
The fact that you can boot into recovery indicates that all it well with the device from that perspective. That leaves only the ROM zip to be flashed which is why I suggested trying a different SD card (since you tried several, it's not likely that you always got a bad download).
If it still messes up with a new SD card, try complete wipe, then format system from nandroid before running the update.zip. System partition doesn't get formatted during a complete wipe, but most ROMs should format it as a matter of course before installing. It's unlikely, but it could be a corrupt system partition which should clean up with a format.

Wanna Save yourself some time and maybe some future headaches? Like posted above It helps when you know what has been done. I would start from the ground up. Get back to a stock base and go from there, this way you are not trying to track down something you may not have done but was done before he got it.
As for your issue, If a radio is recommended then it will/should state so in the thread.
I have threads on how to root his inspire but can anyone forward a link of how to completely unroot and reset. When i reset in recovery it still keeps cynogenmod on.

There's no good reason to go through all that trouble. If you have S-OFF, then you're good to go as far as being rooted is concerned. Since you appear to have recovery too, then you're 95% rooted no matter what the current ROM is doing.
If you have S-OFF already, then going back to stock and rerooting is just going to waste time.

In cwm are you trying to "apply update from sdcard" or "install zip from sdcard"
install zip is what you want.... then choose the ROM. IF you're applying update.... it's gonna abort.
You could also try reflashing recovery in Rom Manager or flashing an older version of recovery.

I tried both ways and its aborts both ways. And Ive reflashed recovery in rom manager, should I maybe try a different recovery?
Since you are already rooted and having trouble flashing thru rom manager, why not try flashing to stock rooted thru bootloader? It's my understanding that attn1's Ace_Cingular_US rom will automatically do a full wipe and take you to the latest stock rom and radio. If that works, then you can install the latest rom manager and flash a custom rom. It's worth a shot.

It's not gonna hurt. it sounds like the recovery is having issues with the script so it's aborting... an older recovery may resolve that issue.
But that's a good idea also... flash the lastest stock rooted ROM thru hboot. Then reflash recovery. see If that don't solve it

hi, i've got CyanogenMod 7.2 (Alpha9) on my galaxy 3, i initially used odin, then found i had the 0kb free space issue, but then used CWM to flash from a zip file and it's now working fine.
i'd like to put the MTD version on it, and i'm trying to follow the instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2309390, but i can't get odin to flash the 1Ghz overclock mtd kernel.
the version of odin that i initially flashed the rom with has no problem establishing a connection with my phone, but says the .tar file is an invalid image when i try to load it in the PDA section.
i've tried a couple of other versions of odin, and they all accept it as a valid image, but none of them get past the point where it says setup connection.
alternatively, a link to a version of the same kernel that i can use CWM recovery to flash would be ideal, i've got to grips with CWM and find it easy to work with, but i'm struggling somewhat with odin.
i've realised my problem all along was that my copy of the mtd update was corrupt. i have re-downloaded it and all is going smoothly so far.

thanks, i'm very happy with it now that the battery isn't draining really quickly like it was with the non-mtd version. i'd been going about it the right way all along, lol, it just never occurred to me that i had a corrupt file. was only when i double clicked on it to look at the contents of the zip that i realised it was corrupt. i was beginning to worry that the world of android modding was hopelessly impenetrable.
