Flashing new rom - HTC Inspire 4G

My buddy has the inspire 4g. He bought it rooted by somebody else. I've flashed cynogenmod for him aqnd several updates over the past few months. We are trying to flash new roms and its constantly aborting. Ive rooted my droids and always flash roms and never run into this problem.
He has the newest clockwork mod should we possible get a different recovery?
I don't do anything with flashing a new radio, is that necesary and whats causing the problem?
I am trying to flash core droid or revolution, he wants the best sense rom any suggestions?
I would appreciate any help. If there is no way to fix it I planned to totally reset and unroot and then root it myself and make sure everything is done right, does that sound right?

Though probably not necessary, the peace of mind that comes with knowing what's been done to the phone from the ground up might be worth it.
As for a fix to your current issue, please provide a little more detail as to the error.

It clears the cache and everything like that but it has a line that says installing update then the next line is installation aborted. That happens very quickly when I try to apply the update.zip

Is this the same SD card for every try? It might be a flakey SD card. Try a different card if you can.

I have several sd cards so will try the one I use. Am going over to help him in a few hours. Anyone have other suggestions? Should I be able to just flash a rom or do I have to flash a new radio also? <Because Ive only done cynogen on his which didnt have a radio.
Thanks again.

Radio is not usually flashed as part of the ROM. As long as you have a valid radio, it should work. If you somehow managed to get an invalid radio flashed, then you've have bigger problems that you indicate (i.e. hard bricked).
The fact that you can boot into recovery indicates that all it well with the device from that perspective. That leaves only the ROM zip to be flashed which is why I suggested trying a different SD card (since you tried several, it's not likely that you always got a bad download).
If it still messes up with a new SD card, try complete wipe, then format system from nandroid before running the update.zip. System partition doesn't get formatted during a complete wipe, but most ROMs should format it as a matter of course before installing. It's unlikely, but it could be a corrupt system partition which should clean up with a format.

Wanna Save yourself some time and maybe some future headaches? Like posted above It helps when you know what has been done. I would start from the ground up. Get back to a stock base and go from there, this way you are not trying to track down something you may not have done but was done before he got it.
As for your issue, If a radio is recommended then it will/should state so in the thread.

I have threads on how to root his inspire but can anyone forward a link of how to completely unroot and reset. When i reset in recovery it still keeps cynogenmod on.

There's no good reason to go through all that trouble. If you have S-OFF, then you're good to go as far as being rooted is concerned. Since you appear to have recovery too, then you're 95% rooted no matter what the current ROM is doing.
If you have S-OFF already, then going back to stock and rerooting is just going to waste time.

In cwm are you trying to "apply update from sdcard" or "install zip from sdcard"
install zip is what you want.... then choose the ROM. IF you're applying update.... it's gonna abort.
You could also try reflashing recovery in Rom Manager or flashing an older version of recovery.

Since it has s-off and is rooted correctly what do you advise I do to fix my abort problem? Didn't see an answer in there, thanks.

I tried both ways and its aborts both ways. And Ive reflashed recovery in rom manager, should I maybe try a different recovery?

Since you are already rooted and having trouble flashing thru rom manager, why not try flashing to stock rooted thru bootloader? It's my understanding that attn1's Ace_Cingular_US rom will automatically do a full wipe and take you to the latest stock rom and radio. If that works, then you can install the latest rom manager and flash a custom rom. It's worth a shot.

It's not gonna hurt. it sounds like the recovery is having issues with the script so it's aborting... an older recovery may resolve that issue.
But that's a good idea also... flash the lastest stock rooted ROM thru hboot. Then reflash recovery. see If that don't solve it

Cant update ROM. What am I doing wrong

I have a NS unlocked and rooted. I have ROM Manager, busybox etc. I followed all the instructions but I can't update ROMs or the 2.3.3 update or CM7 nothing. Each time it starts to unpack or whatever it gets about 1/3 the way and aborts. Something about verifying signatures or something.
Very frustrating.
Thanx in advance

try to download the ROM again
sounds like the zip file is corrupted
What version Clockwork Recovery are you using? Try reverting back to a older version or something.
Verify the ROM's MD5 Hash using HashTab (Google it)
I've tried several times with downloads and now the latest clockwork and the version prior.
Samething always aborts, can't verify signature. Tried manual and through rom manager.
When using rom manager is that suppose to do the whole install? Cuz that only gets me to the little droid and the triangle. I have to get myself into bootloader and continue manually from there.
Thanks

Hmm... It sounds like clockwork isn't properly installed. ROM Manager should take you directly to clockwork recovery without you having to do anything.
the problem you are facing is that you are still on stock rom. so even if you flash clockwork recovery and then reboot to recovery, you'll always end up going to the stock recovery. this is a new feature implemented by google.
what you should do is...
1) go to bootloader
2)flash the clockwork recovery using fastboot
3)DO NOT reboot the phone or quit bootloader. immediately after flashing the rec. using fastboot, just enter recovery (through bootloader)
4)flash you new rom
just for u to have an idea. the recovery should be orange in colour.
option 2.
you also have the option of using a file manager with moun/root functions such as root explorer and rename the recovery script in etc folder but i guess step 1 is much easier for now.
OK I played alot today and this is what happened.
After fixing permissions and flashing the new CWM and wiping data/cache it finally worked. Unfortunately titanium and my backup didnt bring everything over. So I went back and forth between stock and CM7 several times but I just couldnt get all my stuff back in CM7. So I thought Id try the 2.3.3 update but not wiping stuff. That didnt work. Then I tried one more time with CM7 but not wiping. I couldnt get pastthe little CM7 droid on the skateboard. So went back to stock for now. Ill have more time on Sat to give things another try.
At least I can get in it now.
Any ideas/thoughts/
Thanks and sorry for the long post.

[GUIDE]Updating to 4.22.651.2 OTA WITHOUT flashing a new ROM or wiping your Phone

This assumes you:
- Have the latest FROYO OTA installed 3.70.651.1
- Have some experience working with flashing things in recovery
- Have NOT deleted/uninstalled ANYTHING in /system
- Have defrosted any bloat you froze with Bloat Freezer or Ti Backup Pro
- Have S-OFF (Used Unrevoked Forever or a version of Unrevoked3 that includes Forever)
OK now let us get to it.
1. Go ahead and download the OTA like normal on your phone, but DO NOT install it.
2. Using a file manager copy the OTA zip file from /cache to /sdcard
3. Using Rom Manager, flash Amon RA Recovery 2.3 (Down at the bottom)
4. In Rom Manager, click the Reboot into Recovery button.
5. Select apply zip from SD Card and flash the OTA zip file that you put in /sdcard
--10 Minutes later.....you now have the UNROOTED OTA installed just as if you installed it normally--
6. Download the 2.6.0.1 ClockWorkMod Recovery zip from here and place it in the root of your SD card
7. Under settings > applications > disable FastBoot (re-enable this when you are done with the whole process)
8. Power off and reboot holding Volume down. The bootloader will scan and then will and ask you to press Volume up to install. Reboot.
9. Delete the PC36IMG.zip file from your SD card and place the attachment below in the root of the SD card.
10. Power off and reboot holding Volume down and then select recovery to start CWM recovery.
11. Choose apply zip from sd card. Choose select zip on sd card. You will see the SU file on the list, flash it to root your phone. Reboot.
You should now be rooted and can upgrade the recovery now to whatever style and version you want!
Enjoy! Please click the THANKS button if it worked for you!

Great info ..hey if I follow these steps and skip the last part will my phone be stock / uprooted and good to go.for a trade in or repair? I've been trying to figure out the best way to unrest when.e3d comes out
I never updated to 3.70. I'm assuming I can do that the same way, root again, download the gingerbread, and root again?
I'm thinking it might just be easier to flash the rooted ROM and radios, but I'm not sure what's best.
if you have amon ra recovery (and a stock rom), you can simply download and click install.
I clicked install, amonra booted up, detected and ran update, click reboot, then the stock recovery will be active and updates the radios, once back in to sense, you can reinstall amonra or clockwork, then SU
worked for me.

im curious why the title says "WITHOUT flashing a new ROM" yet you are clearly flashing the rom in amon ra. sorry just got to nit pick
what happens if you have deleted some system apps. Such as nova and blockbuster. I saved the APKS on the SD card however but I did delete them?

Well I wouldn't want to try it unless your prepared to do a full ruu reset if it fails.
the OTA is like a patcher, it deletes unneeded files, adds new files, and updates existing files... if its not completely stock it may (or may not) cause an error which the updater can't handle, and then you may be left with a half upgraded system.
if you nandroid *before* downloading the ota, you should always be able to go back, assuming you have perm soff from unrevoked forever.
it should run whether you have removed files or not. if it tries to delete a file that does not exist the script will just skip it. op i think you have bit of confusion going on though. you were only able to reattain root because you are s-off from unrevoked forever. if you are not s-off and do your method, which is no different then just excepting the ota and letting it do its thing btw, you will loose root until this new ota is cracked. just fwi, there was no "magic" from you flashing manually, the same script is ran and the same files are moved and patches are made regardless.
cant I reinstall the apps and put the apks in their original system folder?

Lol OK so which one is it? Can n just accept the ota and run? I'm rooted on stock rom, but I deleted nova and blockbuster from the system? I know I will loose root which I got by using unrevoked 3, but I just want to know if I can do it without bricking the phone. Ty

shouldn't be any worry about bricking but make 100% sure you are s-off from unrevoked forever and you should be able to re-root pretty much how the op outlined.
im currently running cm7. if i go back to a rooted stock froyo rom, will this work???
confused. I just don't understand why you wouldn't download the rooted version of the ROM from here on XDA and just flash it like a normal rom. Maybe I'm overtired and missing the point.
To me, its like this. If you're rooted, and want an OTA update, just wait for the devs at XDA to go through it and root it, and make it available for download. Then just download it and flash it. You get the same exact update that way, as if you took the OTA from sprint. Except this way you don't risk losing root, and your good to go.
If you're not rooted and your phone is stock, accept OTA like normal.
I don't understand why all this extra stuff needs to be done, and add more to the confusion. If your rooted, updating to the latest is simple. Download it and flash it in recovery.

Do a full wipe and flash like any other rom you've ever flashed before. You'll then be on the latest and greatest . (you'll probably be going right back to CM)
EDIT: and to the OP, sorry that I don't agree with you. I just find it more confusing that way, and I guess that whatever the point of doing it that way is, is sailing miles above my head.

That link I supplied a couple posts up is a completely 100% stock and rooted version of the OTA update.
This is from the first paragraph of the first post of that thread.
"Stock 4.22.651.2 ROM, rooted and ready for your flashing pleasures. This is a completely stock ROM that has had nothing done to it outside of rooting & deodexing, it's not even zip aligned yet (sorry DrMacinyasha)
As always make sure your wipe your dalvik and create a nandroid before flashing."

thanks for your insight. only thing I am confused on at this point is why there are kernels listed to flash from May just below it? wouldnt the htc stock kernel from the ota be in this rom already? seems like alot of folks are looking for newer kernels to flash after flashing xhaus rom. I was a little curious about why those kernels were linked there too. I honestly haven't really kept up with thread, because I don't have an interest in flashing the update to begin with. I noticed those kernels are from May 4th, so it doesn't seem like they'd be the most current one. Without reading that thread, I first would've presumed that the kernel that comes with the rom would be the one to use. So, you've read through the thread and you're seeing that people are having trouble with the kernel that the rom comes with?? I'll take a gander over in the thread in a few minutes and see what I make out of it.
Well I f'd up and installed the latest update straight from sprint, instead of waiting for the rooted version to come out. I guess I thought I would find something exciting, but now I would realize it was kind of worthless and want to go back to a different rom like miui or vaelpak. I am s-off with unrevoked. Is there some combination of the steps listed I can use to back out of this?
Let me take a guess...did this update my radios and hboot to a version that would be incompatible with these roms?

[Q] Please help me! Flashed a nexus s 4g rom onto a nexus s 3g phone

model: Nexus S (I9023)
History: Installed ICS 4 couple of months back.
Wanted to try out cm7. But, saw that there was cm9, so didn't actually pay attention to which rom I was going to flash. Downloaded the rom from the cm official website (cm_crespo4g-ota-eng.burnsra.a18).
After reboot, I am not able to connect to network and in system settings all 4G options are being shown!
Not able to flash any other ROM's too (Tried installing 2.3.4).
Don't have any backup (I thought I may not run into any problem, as I had done it once already)
How can I restore the communication functionality?
you have to flash a radio that is compatible to your phone from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116884
Update: I just found that before installing ICS, i did make a back up. I tried to restore and I got the following msg:
Checking MD5 sums...
MD5 mismatch!
If there is a way I can restore, from the back up, I would prefer that rather than messing up with anything else. Because now I feel, I should read more first before actually doing something!

this may help too cwm nandroid backup ics for i9023 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1396224 just place in cwm backup folder on your sd card
Here's what I would do if it were me ...
Assuming that you still have recovery, d/l a copy of the proper radio for your device and a solid rom like Peter Alfonso's "Bugless Beast". You will also need the "Wipe All" zip. Place everything on your sdcard, wipe cache and dalvik, then flash the radio. Next, back into recovery, flash "wipe all" zip, and then flash the full rom.
If everything goes ok, allow phone to completely boot, and then back into recovery. Again flash the "wipe all" zip, and then restore the back up you made previously. Good luck.

Now that I could recover my phone, I would like to try another ROM. Before I do that, What all are the necessary things I would have to back up so that, if in case I run into any problem, I can recover everything from back up?

Just do a nand backup of the working rom, and keep the "wipe all" zip and radio zip on your sd card.

Aroma semi-bricked my phone?!

I saw that the new CleanROM was using the Aroma installer for both versions of the ROM, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I don't have any experience with Aroma, but it all seemed to be working at first. However, I guess the file may have been corrupt because it just stuck at "Installing ROM" and never finished.. I hit the next button and it said it was finished even though I never got a status update. Stuck at HTC load screen, and will NOT boot into recovery even from the bootloader.
Since I can still load the bootloader, but not recovery, I still have some hope, right?
All I should have to do is run the AT&T RUU, right?
Halp!

Relock then try the RUU

Or push twrp recovery and flash again.
Thanks for the responses -- was able to boot into recovery (CWM)... Not sure why it wouldn't work before.
Now it says it cannot mount the sdcard...
doesn't sound good.
Waiting on RUU to finish downloading, then I'll relock and try that.

You should not use cwm, use twrp, CleanROMs op stated that, try pushing twrp, and flashing before you ruu, it causes issues that hasn't been fixes yet.

Can't use clock work. Use team win.
If everybody is saying use TWRP and the person is still using CWM; one has to wonder how intelligent that person is.

This is a known issue with CWM, mount SD simply does not work. Use TWRP like everyone is saying.
Did you try wiping anything in Aroma? Because that is a known issue as well (results in soft bricks). Only wipe in recovery, and use Aroma only for picking the various ROM options (not for wiping anything).
Got it working -- used fastboot to flash TWRP and formatted SD card and now everything is lovely.
I've been flashing CleanROM since the beginning before there was TWRP and never bothered to switch recoveries. I guess I should have read the notes more closely.. oh well, no harm done
thanks for the replies and help

Am I hard or soft Bricked?

I had been running liquidsmooth rom. There were issues when it booted up, would always boot twice then went into the system ok. I decided that I'd rather have a more stable rom on my phone, so I went into ez recovery and tried to flash back into cwm 6 recovery. When it came up, the restore backup option was not there, and I couldn't boot back into the rom. I tried several times, but to no avail
Since then I have tried Odin on the phone, and have gone through the soft brick recovery steps that I had to do one time before. I flashed both files and the stock file for the third step. I do get the error messages that I normally would where normally I would factory reset and clear cache, however I then get two more.
e: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Instalation aborted.
I cannot get beyond that, I do the wipe and reset each time, however when I reboot I just get funneled back to the same error message. I've scoured the forums and the internet but cannot find a solution to my problem. Am I SOL, or is there a solution I haven't found yet?
What you could do is on your computer, download a synergy ROM like 1.5 1.6 1.7 since those don't require an unlocked boot loader. Connect your phone via USB (I don't know if it will register in the state its in) or you can get a micro SD card reader and pop that into your computer, and transfer the synergyrom on your SD card and pop it back into your phone..get to your custom recovery wipe data/factory reset wipe cache and dalvik cache. Then install .zip from SD card and choose the synergyrom. From there it'll take a bit for your phone to boot up, but you should be up and running and then you can do what you want. I usually keep one ROM like this on my phone so if something doesn't work out I can start over. Let me know if you need more help, I'll try my best to see what I can do from work.

I actually had that on my sd card from last night when I was messing with it trying to fix it. I did try that and this is what I get
--Install /sdcard...
Finding update package...
opening update package...
verifying update package...
E:signature verification failed <in red type>
Instalation aborted.
Thanks for your suggestion, Part of the problem could be I'm not getting the traditional cwm loader, every time it starts it comes up in tiny type at the top: Recovery Booting.... dont know if that makes a difference or not?
signature verification error means your booting into stock recovery instead of cwm recovery...thats why there is no back up/ restore option.

I can't get it to do anything other than that. I've held the up and home button to try to get elsewhere, but it always goes to that. The only other thing I can do is get to the Odin download screens, but even then, after flashing it boots back to the same place with the above errors.

wipe data/factory reset then reboot from stock recovery. use my guide for proper instructions on flashing back to stock. research then flash, dont flash then research.
And Liquid is supposed to boot twice. It's kexec.

Why don't you Odin back CWM recovery, boot into cwm recovery and use this to toggle secure signature off and flash synergy rom?

no problem...really its not a huge deal as the app triangle away can reset it, but i prefer to just use odin for stock purposes only.

I had actually followed those steps already, but still get the recovery booting problem and can't seem to get past that. I can try it again after work, but have done those steps at least 3 or 4 times to no different results.
Thanks for the help though. I'll keep trucking on, just missing my phone today....

I'm willing to try it if it might help me get back, I just dont want to do anything that will mess it up anymore than I already have.
At this point I just want to get back to stock /synergy if I can and be happy with it. I've never had issues like this when rooting/flashing on other phones that I've had, but at this point will just be happy with a useable phone.

As droidstyle mentioned that when the flash counter tripped, it won't allow you to re odin cwm. My question is can you Odin back cwm (clockmod recovery) and boot directly to it?

Then why is it that flashing a rooted "stock" /system partition, which is technically custom, through Odin, doesn't trip the flash counter?
Is there any other downside to tripping the flash counter besides having to use triangle away to reset it if you ever want to return your phone?

No, I ran home on lunch and tried, and it wont let me do that. Odin wont flash it and I just get a FAIL, and the phone say security check fail.
I After trying a few differnt times with a couple versions of the stock rom I found, I got it back up and running.
As much as I love custom roms, I think I'm done playing with this phone. Thanks everyone for the help.
