[Q] [i5800] No free internal memory! - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hi there,
I have a Samsung Galaxy 3 i580 device, and whenever I want to put something on my internal (root) memory, I get a 'no space' error.
Now I installed Root Explorer, and it seems that there are A LOT of .apk files in my /system/apk folder.
Am I allowed to delete these .apk's, or are they actually used?
And what else should/can I do to clear my memory?
Note: I still have 40+ mb memory left on the phone to install apps, just not in the root memory.
Thanks in advance for your time!

have you tried to mount system r/w in rootexplorer

You can delete them with root explorer...just be sure you know which you are removing as some are essential for a stable phone
swyped....and I apologize for not proofreading

Yes, the system was in r/w from the beginning.
Question: When I use apps2sd, will my apps still be installed to the /system/app folder on my internal memory?

Most will and app2sd will notify you if they can be moved but some apps automatically install to sd. Angry birds is one example.
Sent telepathically using vulcan mind meld app.

So there is no way to make free space in my internal memory, except for removing apps?

[Q] What are the files inside .android_secure?

i seem to have over 1 GB of wasted space in that folder .android_secure
any 1 got a clue if those are safe to delete?
I've never found that deleting anything on my SD card caused major problems for the phone, including .android_secure. Of course, that folder has never been 1 GB in size for me, either, so I suppose your results may vary. Really, though, all the system stuff is in the protected internal storage, so I doubt you'll do much worse than delete media files or whatever apps you've moved to the SD card, if that. I say give it a shot and see what happens. Of course, I take no responsibility for anything that does go wrong if you do. >.>
apparently those are Apps settings or something along the lines
i flashed SuperAOS and during the wiping process it showed it was deleting .android_secure
App2sd
This is where the operating system stores a portion of the apps. Anytime you install a new app and choose to install it to the SD card, it puts a large portion of the app into this folder. Deleting the contents would delete your apps.
If you move an app to the SD card via the official (2.2+) method, this is where (most of it) goes.
Hi,
I recently flashed a new ROM and had to do a full wipe including factory reset. I copied some apps to SD, and indeed I see that the .android_secure folder has a lot in it, taking up space. I installed all apps again from market on the new ROM install, and they all say they can be copied to SD again, so they don't take information from the previously installed bits on the SD card. Is it safe to delete everything in this folder?
EDIT: I have an HTC Hero, but only noticed when I posted this that this is a Samsung Nexus S thread. I'm guessing that this is not that big a deal?

sorry to revive this thread after so long, but does this folder also store the app data? In other words, for games like plants vs zombies or angry birds etc, if I copy the corresponding files over to my new phone (after installing PVZ/AB on the new phone of course), does it also copy over my progress?
(recently swapped my EVO 4G to EVO 3D and trying to figure out how to copy the game progress over - esp for PVZ)

Also Titanium Backup will give you that choice, as well as a ton of other options, like to make a backup copy of apps and their data to the sd card. Flashed my phone and restored all my programs with saved passwords data and everything using this program. The ROM I have now automatically installs all apps to the sd card unless they are required to be on the internal mem. :)

[Q] How to make system partition larger

My Galaxy SL has 2GB internal memory and 32GB External.
When trying to set up avast! anti-theft I ran into a problem with lack of space in the system partition.
What I'd like to do is to make as much use as possible of the external SD for applications etc and use the internal storage just for system stuff and anything else that needs to be in the internal storage.
I would welcome any advice on how best to go about this.
Thanks in advance.
Eventually freed up space in system partition by moving audio stuff out.
The space allocated for the partition is 322MB.
Need to find a ROM that gives a larger partition or find some way of increasing the size.
try moving your few apps to sdcard.
I dont think we can increase the size of app partition.

Have used Apps2SD and Link2SD but didn't gain very much.
There are something like 140 unmoveable apps on the phone, quite a few of which cannot even be uninstalled.
Guess I'll have to weed out unused apps.
Strikes me as strange that so little is allocated for SYSTEM partition.
install the titanium backup and goto apps section in it.
look for those apps which are in red color (means they are on system partition) long press on them and then use convert to user app. (make sure you don't convert all apps just covernt apps like live wallpaper, swype, etc)
make sure to takw backup before converting it.
I too have system partition of 337 mb only.

[Q] Not Enough Internal Storage

Hello,
Infuse 4g. I uninstalled Skype (which is apparently a mistake) because when I try and reinstall it, the phone locks up, black screen, and reboots upon install. The Skype app downloads fine, but will not install with out locking up the phone. Sometimes, I get a message which states I have too little of internal storage, which is at .93GB. Does any body have any suggestions for me about how to install Skype?
The phone is rooted and I have titanium backup, which I tried to reinstall that way to, same problem, the phone locks up.
Any ideas about how to get more internal storage.
Thanks
Charles
Hmm try cleaning your /data partition or going to ics

Use tibu to move some apps to sd card?

Check threads about what you can safely remove
I use TiBu and remove youtube, maps, voice apps, news apps, and other crap. I typically try to keep 90 to 100 mb free.
Do a search for things you can safely remove.
Do a tibu backup before removing. If something goes wrong you can easily reinstall it.
well, Ive removed alot of stuff I dont use, but internal storage remains at .91 GB? This is a major drag, not having Skype really sucks. What's odd, is I used to have Skype on the phone, I uninstalled it thinking it would be no big deal to reinstall it...but it will not install. Skype downloads fine, but upon installation, it will lock up the phone everytime and I must reboot. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Thanks GoSooners, but you lost me. How do I clean my data partition?

Well you can wipe your data partition but it'll uninstall your apps and undo anything you've done with your phone. Just move some large apps to sd card. You can do that by going into settings. You shouldn't see that message unless you have less than about 200-300 mb.
I am more than satisfied with the internal storage...
I dont install much apps, just essentials, it also helps when changing roms because u dont have to install all of them everytime...

unrelated that's all on the system partition which is read only and doesn't need free space..
the free space error is a market problem and unrelated to the actual free space. some kernels have a patch for this. i dont really remember the details for fixing it manually but gtg used to have a modified market and a init.d script that fixed it but that was on an old version of the market.
if you can get a current version of the apk you can side load it with a file explorer by either clicking it and letting the install program run or by moving it to /data/app with a root file explorer.
between 1+gb data partition for apps and app data and the apps2sd feature in android and 14gb internal sd storage you shouldn't have storage issues. even if you fill the sd with rom .zips and multimedia you should still never reach the 1gb /data partition because android apps simply arent that big with the exception of a few high end games that i beleive actually install to the sdcard
.93gb is a ton of space for phone apps! but is that the internal sd or the /data partition
Thanks Dani897. If I read you correctly, you believe it's a problem with the app, and not the phone? Which is what I always thought. When I first got the phone, Skype installed fine, now it does not.
Phone Info:
Samsung I-997 Infuse, rooted
Version: Froyo
Go Launcher
Internal SD Card Storage = 8.12 GB available
External SD Card Storage = 6.8 GB available
Internal Phone Storage = .92 GB
Maybe if I could somehow get an old version of Skype, maybe that would work?

[Q] FB,Gmail, other system apps to internal memory

I rooted my Xperia E C1504 ( single ). No flashing ROM. Nothing. Just rooted. I could move some of the non-movable apps to internal memory after rooting. But there are still apps like Facebook, Gmail, Browser, that are considered as system apps and unable to move to internal memory.
I use Titanium Backup.
And if I could move these apps, I think I can hibernate them in Greenify.
I searched for modules in Xposed Framework too. No use there.
Someone help please ?

I did use that app "link2sd". And no, it doesn't show that option "Convert to user app" for system apps, but it shows "convert to system app" for user apps. And it showed me an error when I tried 'Move 2 SD card' with Facebook, Gmail.
Now what ? And also, App shortcuts on the home screen disappears if I reboot my device. However, apps installed on phone remains on home screen but not the ones moved to Internal Memory. Any idea about this too ?

From the play store download /system/app mover. It is a free app, you need busybox installed though. Use that, it will convert the apps to user apps for you. Quick tip start from the bottom and work your way up.
And the problem about the shortcuts disappearing is common with apps installed to the SDCard and Internal Memory. Since they are stored on storage's what are loaded after the phone has booted the shortcuts get unlinked.
On older phones (Xperia x10) I was able to partition the sd card and have an ext-3 partition which is native to android/linux, link2sd was able to move system apps to it as it was already considered mounted at boot so nothing would unlink.. I have been trying to do this will the milo with little success, the phone considers either the internal sd or external sd card as 'damaged' when partitioned - I have tried a variety of tools which have been successful on other Sony mobiles, it then proceeds to reformat and partition the card(s) back to their default state.. Highly annoying, as by using an ext partition you could have gigabytes of system storage, so I can only assume there is something about the miro range which makes partitions unusable.
Performance is lessened when using ext partitions but that performance drop is significantly less than only have 50mb of ram available compared to 300 or 400mb!
If I have any success I will update you but at the moment im baffled..
