Flashed to cog and now no GPS? - Captivate General

I went from stock eclair to cognition the newest and have no GPS function or lock. I reverted back to stock att firmware and GPS was defunct ,anybody else have this problem and how could newer firmware not have the GPS working and now original doesn't work.
Thanks
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

Captivate stock rom GPS was flaky under Eclair unreliable and slow locks , flashed Cognition v2.3b3 and bam GPS locks fast with 15m accuracy.
But i did not try it on the road yet...
Funny thing about GPS i also have Nexus One it suppose to have good GPS , with stock rom it was good , some weeks later GPS was crazy just like my cappy then some weeks later again and half a dozen ROMs played with. GPS works again so go figure maybe its crazy earth magnetic fields and doomsday is near

it can take quite a bit of time to get an initial lock. if the gps icon comes up it might mot be broken it might just need more time to download gps data from satalites.
if the icon doesnt show up even with gps turned on in settings or works temperarily but turns off after a few minutes then i have had luck with a factory reset. unfortunately you lose all your apps. generally speaking the gps on froyo builds has been quite good. but the phone is prone to errors when flashing.

[Q] How is the GPS with Froyo so far?

Is the GPS working now that Froyo is on your Captivate? I have a brand new one on the way to me via FedEx right now so I can't flash it till I get it and wonder if anyone can tell me if GPS is fixed since Froyo is now available to the phone.
It's a lot better. But its not perfect. I'm still in the 3 day "GPS is guaranteed to work better" window so time will tell
Mine doesn't work at all. With all kinds of combinations of GPS setting tweaks.
Thanks. I hope it works better. The phone is still nice so I guess I'll be happy with it even if it's not perfect.
I hope Samsung has another fix for it since it's not working for everybody
I'm doing better but it still sucks.
GPS, using GPS Satellites only with default GPS settings will not lock onto ANYTHING AT ALL for me.
With cell towers, it's 1400m accurate.
Not sure what changed between 2.2 and 2.1 but with 2.1 GPS worked great for me.
Very strange that GPS functionality is different from phone to phone, software to software.....
I do hope they release an actual total GPS fix someday.
Edit: I still like the Galaxy S phones. I know Samsung is still very high tech. It may take them awhile to catch up with what people really want with an Android phone but other than that they have have put together some very nice phones with the Galaxy S line.
mine will pull me down to 10-20 meters. and according to lbstest, it shows it as 15m accurate, full stand alone, lock in between 15s-90s.
Driving around, it was the worst it has ever been. I then used GPS Status and left it up on my dash. I generally could see 2 or 3 satellites. Once, it got up to 4. This is during a sunny day with full view of the sky.
People still seem to think they have something great if it locks in their house, but the real test is driving around and seeing if you can KEEP that lock.
I noticed using ANY of the "GPS fixes" destroyed my GPS performance. I need it set to Standalone, Cold Start, AUTO SUPL config (no supl.google.com) and none of the Jupiter XML "fixes". Stock froyo GPS seems to work OK for me -- I get locks in a reasonable amount of time, although accuracy still isn't great. I still have yet to test Google Navigation / My Tracks, however.
A lot better for me......Many sats in view. Quick locks. Google maps tracked my car pretty quickly on 2.1. I would say this is as good as can be expected from a cell phone GPS device. I have Gamins for the cars so I really won't use this as such. but on my motorcycle it works very well.
It will not be perfect and I accept that. It is A lot better though than 2.1 IMO.
It is marginally better than JH7. Still broken for sure.
Stationary it's fine and gets a pretty fast lock.
Car navigation is poor. I was getting better results in Cognition 2.1.5. Positioning is jumping around, putting me a block away about 25% of the time, getting various sizes of the blue "circle of trust" about 50% of the time. It freezes occaisonally but maybe less than in some of my previously used ROMs. I've tried all the usual setting adjustments and they haven't helped.
The GPS nav capability on the Captivate in prior ROMs has been good enough for me to declare it satisfactory. I'd say this version isn't- yet. I'm confident we'll get it back to at least what it was, but it will take some more tweaking.
Just wondering if anyone is able to get reliable GPS locks in airplane mode. I am beginning to question whether I should switch to Xperia X10. I use GPS quite a bit and don't see why I need to get another GPS when the Cappy should have a working one.
I do love everything else about the Cappy. Hate to go to an outdated system but having everything working as described is kind of nice.
In my testing and experience it is much better, but still not as it ideally should be. I get nice, fast locks in Maps, but GPS test apps are still confused. Perhaps the whole benchmark vs practice concept, but this case seems to a little outside of that realm.
I was able to get GPS lock to around 10 sats only after deactivating the "Use wireless network" option.
However, I had no nav app so i cant say how it tracks.. I am back to 2.1 now, waiting until 2.2 wont be so laggy

This is interesting, as I keep thinking of switching to a Galaxy S because SE's so slow about updating to 2.1 (Maybe November?) and 2.2 which is a requirement for the latest Gmail and GDocs may not come until Spring 2011 if ever.
However, GPS is extraordinary on the X10. I live on the side of a hill and I can get a lock in 3 seconds, starting with 7/7 and then 8/8 sats by 30 seconds (every option turned on). Lattitude, Navigation, Maps, etc all work wonderfully.
WiFi and GPS are the two most 'additional' features for me on a phone. I have a bit of an issue with SE's Wifi as it's only working when the phone's awake and if the screen blanks, it switches to 3G. Leaves you tethered to a plug so you can set the screen to stay on when plugged in.

I just realized that I use GPS more than I expected. I think 2.1 without multitouch is ok for me. I am still having daily random shutdowns though mine is limited to unplugging from AC only. I am still waiting for something to happen to Cappy cause I still like it.
I have an RMA phone that I updated OTA to JH7 and yesterday i had to drive out of state and about 20 minutes before I left I updated to Froyo 2.2 stock and my GPS worked perfectly the whole way there and back. Granted it was only about two hours of total drive time ( I am really close to the state border), but it never showed me off the path it set for me and when I passed the spot I was suppsed to go to, it showed me drive past it. So I have as stock a setup as possible and my GPS worked perfectly for me. I cant tell you how many sattelites I have or how many seconds it took to lock etc., but real world road test was great. i will use it tonight on my way to and from work and maybe repost now that I have had it loaded for a day.

GPS no longer works [ns4g]

My gps used to work phenomenally, in my house with only satellite option checked it would find me between 1-3m consistently and that was before I got an airrave. I have been flashing cm7 nightlies since #12 and have had no issues until yesterday when I flashed 25 and that's when the issues started. GPS will not lock without the mobile network options checked, and that locks any where between 50-400m, yes a big blue 400m circle when I was getting a 1m lock in my basement 24hours prior. I have wasted the past day trying to fix this, I re-flashed back to what was working before with no luck, I have tried every "gps fix" that I could find. I have drained 2 batteries using "gps status" trying to get a lock.
I am furious about this now, coming from an epic 4g and the laundry list of gps problems with that and now add the ns4g issues, just plain awful reception across the board. I am officially fed up with Samsung products at this point.
If anyone has experienced this problem and fixed it your help would be appreciated. Thanks.

GPS Firmware?

I was reading that the samsung galaxy sII is also having the standard GPS problem that samsung is famous for. If you dont now what Im talking about, go use an HTC phone and watch the phone instantly lock on your position in <1 second with 3ft accuracy while you are indoors..
my Charge has been "Acceptable" when using GPS, but lately it has taken upwords of 20 min and a few reboots to get a lock on my location. Using GPS test, and Faster Fix do not work. GPS test just sits there showing me 9 satellites in view but locking on none.
apparently there is an update for the SGSII that actually fixes this problem.
http://phandroid.com/2011/05/23/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-gets-ke7-update-through-kies/
So to the devs that are in the know, where is the GPS modem firmware located? It is not in the base band modem sets as I was thinking. Is there a way we can use the sgsII update on our phones?
I love my charge, and Gummy2.0 is amazing... but I need a working GPS, the damn thing cost me a job interview yesterday when it refused to lock and get me to the place on time.
-cheers
I agree that the charge may not lock quite as fast as some of the HTC phones I have owned, but my GPS performance is certainly acceptable.
I am running gummy 1.9.1 and just returned from a one week trip all over New England and my GPS worked just fine the whole way. I used it MANY times to find locations I had no idea how to get to and it worked perfectly every time.
I used GPS Test Plus & did the XDA tweaks & it really does work just fine.
~John
My gps was working acceptable for a while. In fact since updating to gummy 2.0. I have no idea if roms change the gps firmware. I expect not. But this is why I am looking for a way to verify the gps firmware. Then the problem can be tracked down easier.
I know I am not the only one with gps problems. And I am a very heavy gps user. Something is definatly different now.. my gps is non functional in its current state.
Make sure you guys turn off google location and verizon location services and only use stand alone gps and test with gpstest app before saying your gps works fine.
My problem is basicly this.. I turn on google maps and it will simply fail to get a location. I don't get the arrow with the large circle with an accuracy of 1600 feet.. it just says 'unable to determine location'. And then quits.
So back to my OP. Where do we find the version number of the gps firmware?
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
Maybe I'm just lucky, but I just fired up GPS Test Plus & in under 30 seconds it said nine satellites visible with eight in use. I then fired up Google Maps & the arrow was right on top of the building I work in.
~John
By the way, I am a LONG TIME GPS/NAV user & understand how it works.
My first Garmin unit had a B&W screen with no background map.....

[Q] Does the gps suck for everyone?

Rogers infuse with infused 2.2.3, core B kernel currently. Never been able to get a solid lock... if I get lucky ill get accurate to 20 meters but it jumps around. with my old Acer liquid e I got instant locks and perfect street level tracking... am I the only one?
also, I've tried pretty much every modem, using j4 now. no difference between any of them.
Yup. You're the only one. Return your phone for another one.
My gps locks in about 5-8 seconds and it literally picks the right lot on my street at my house. I've had trouble before.
Are you rooted?
What rom are you on?
And have you tried any of the GPS fixes on this site?
my GPS has breen crap since the beginning.
It was only stock for a day.... maybe.. couldn't get locks with stock
tried rooted with infused, GPS still crap
now I'm on MIUI weekly, tried all the different modems and kernels.... still... SAMSUNG GPS CRAP!!!!
My wife has a captivate and she was running stock for almost a year, and I put MIUI on hers recently and she is now getting better locks.
As long as one of us has a decent working GPS I am happy.
Since owning this and doing research, it seems its a problem with the Samsung GPS... if that is the case... I will probably not be purchasing another Sasmung phone.. I like having a working GPS dammit!!!
My old HTC Aria would lock instantly indoors 99% of the time.. I'm actually starting to miss that tiny little phone... haha
Yes mines crap as well. Luckily I'm exchanging the phone for another infuse since its under warranty. I'll post if there is any difference. I doubt it though, Samsung gps isn't know for their performance. My old x10 xperia is getting lock in 1 - 3 sec indoors and even in the basement. The infuse is an embarrassment compared to the x10. The signal takes 30 secs or more to get a lock and when it does, it jumps around and makes navigation useless.
running perfect for me, I get locks in 2-3 seconds, while inside in my home or warehouse.
I live in SF bay area with my custom in my sig
GPS can suck at times and other times its perfect. I notice it sucks in large cities like when I go downtown or to NYC.

My GPS has been hit or miss, but it's been real fast over the past few days. I'm up in Maine where att service isnt even available 30 miles north of me. Strangely, I have faster locks here than I do when I travel to Mass.

Yes, the stock Infuse's GPS is pathetic.
I'm on Miui and it seems to work very well (after the 1st lock). There are other ROMS where it also works much better.
IMHO, fiddling with all the gps settings and various market apps was too frustrating...they would all work for a day or so but eventually the poor GPS performance returned. So, I quit fiddling, found a rom I like and with a working GPS and stuck with it.
GPS
When I was stock it worked with no issues, and im on serendipty IIV now and I have not had any GPS lock issues.
Alright, miui is giving me the fastest locks, but never perfectly accurate street level... oh well. I guess ill just put up with it.

Not really...I live in Central Jersey and every ROM I tries (dipity, miui, infused, cm7, hellraiser) didn't give me Amy trouble. Maybe I got lucky? Because over the past summer I went all around the East Coast and always uses my phone to find myself around cities Ans I never had a problem.

I've only had a good gps on stock and dlev. No go on infused/miui/sensation. It's a hit or miss rom, even on dlev It'll still lose my location.
MIUI has the best performance for me on the Infuse; the Captivate always sucked and continues to suck (although the tricks on the captivate forum and MIUI do improve it's suckeness).
Tried most of the ROMs for the Infuse (but never stock) and MIUI is by far the best.

I've used a lot of ROMs....
S7: Worked fine, and worked quick. Locked on in ~5 seconds
Stock: Meh. It worked but took forever to lock
Infused: Worked alright. 10 seconds or so to lock
Dlev: Didn't work
CM7: Works good
Live near Minneapolis and never really had that big of an issue with the GPS. It was noticeably slower to find and lock than my HTC Tilt. Just drove down to Kansas City, where I found while in Iowa I lost almost ALL GPS connectivity. Now down here in Kansas I have to be directly outside, takes about 10 minutes to get a lock, and even then is pathetically inaccurate. Been trying in my spare time several of these GPS fixes. The original one I tried, changing to supl.nokia.com actually would see sats quickly, but just never locked.
I really wish I had known just how bad the GPS is on this phone, along with the poor performance in general. I would have avoided this like the plague. Part of the reason we wanted these was for the large screens to use with GPS. Now I learn the GPS is unusable AFTER the return period has ended. Yay. Next phone will be HTC, and honestly maybe Windows one as well.
The problem isn't really with locks for me, its with the accuracy... I can never get better than a 9 metre radius. Quite annoying, especially when my liquid was so accurate...

My Liquid E had Amazing GPS lock. Almost instant. Stock Rogers gave me a lock after a few minutes. CM7 27oct has given me 0 locks in just over a week. :-(
Some tips:
After flashing a ROM or changing gps.conf the GPS occasionally doesn't like to work. Enter angry gps through the dialer (never sgs tools, secgps.conf doesn't update I'd you launch it that way) and toggle the operation mode reboot and toggle it back.
If using Msbased location and the nmea data is old locks can take a long time. This happens if you turn GPS off and use it infrequently.
The google IP based location service (network location).can wreak havoc on the tracking, turn it off! this is especially true in cities where public wifi is everywhere, it will show you're location bouncing from store front to store front. Though it can be helpful on highways with public wifi like i've seen in Pennsylvania and new Jersey on my way to Philly I still prefer actual GPS locks and Samsung phones have a hard time deciding which to use.
Also any smartphone will have threads like this, I have seen mixed experiences in several forums, and my and others personal experience with 2g and 3g IPhones has been negative despite the common opinion that they have good performance. Even my aria was lacking in acceptable gps. Fact is that we are dealing with sensitive components and there will be bad units. What I will say is that the infuse is much more capable than the captivate, my captivate had great reception, better than my infuse, but it didn't seem to like the data running with the GPS, if I used Ms based location it wouldn't track well, and it didn't agree with google maps at all, apps with maps stored on the phone and standalone GPS made tracking impeccable though. The infuse can use Ms based location with few issues and the recent leaks use it by default and I have been more than pleased with the GPS on kj2 without changing any settings at all.
The update when ever it drops may not fix a bad unit so it won't help everyone but I think some people will stop complaining about the spastic moments that Samsung phones can have.

GPS Stopped working

Friend of mine recently told me her GPS on her verizon S3 stopped working. she brought it by, i flashed the newest build of cleanrom on it today and sure enough the GPS still doesnt work. everything needed is turned on but it doesnt get a lock. i checked it with the GPS Status app and it shows like 0/20 satellites and doesnt lock to any. only way i was able to actually get somewhat of a lock on google maps was to hook it up to WiFi and let it gather from that.
any suggestions?
Somewhat common problem. I haven't found a fix as of yet. There is a gps fix somewhere in these forums though that sort of helps. my phone had the same problem. Going back to stock or to any custom rom, nothing worked, the gps was just dead. After flashing one of the fixes I finally managed to get it to get locks, but it needs like 7-8 satellites to get a fix, is highly inaccurate, and loses gps lock a few times on every trip.
Here's the gps fix page
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1880411
I use Galaxy s3 test 3 alt, it's the only one that gets any lock for me. The first time and other intermittent times can take up to 10 minutes or more though, and rebooting the phone or trying again another day does sometimes help.
I know it is definitely the phone, as my pantech marauder which has the same SoC which should be very similar for gps location, finds and locks on to 6-8 towers in like 10 seconds or less all the time, even indoors, and gets location accurate to less than 100ft with 4 satellites while the gs3 needs 7-8 satellites to get a lock to 300-600ft
If none of the software fixes work. And the stock unrooted software does not receive GPS lock.
I would highly recommend replacing the GPS antenna just in case.
I'm 90% sure the headphone jack. External speaker. WiFi antenna and GPS antenna are all in one unit.
This piece is sold for cheap on Amazon. Or eBay or whatever.
Replacing is simply a removing a couple screws and popping the old one out.
Here is a link to eBay
http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=160890063224
Possibly you could find one cheaper.
Hopefully this is it for you.
Let me know how it goes.

the phone recently did an update to jb 411 and now no gps fix w/o data.
I do NOT believe its the antenna.
