As I have been checking out the features of the phone, I noticed that when I went to look at the specs in the About Phone section, the header that usually be at the top, System Updates, is missing. Any thoughts on why this is so?

You should be able to use *#*#CHECKIN#*#* still. I think they removed it to keep us from hammering on the update servers and only getting OTAs when they are damn good and ready for us to have it.
Maybe part of TMo's wanting to control the device rather than us. I got the update notification right after I back off Visionary temp root.
Turned it back on after it was done.

That feature isn't available in phones running sense, you will only see it in Vanilla android, not sure about Blur/Galaxy/etc.
Thanks. I was able to receive the firmware 2.2.1 update yesterday. I thought that it was a glitch.

Anyone else have an issue where "Check for Updates" is 100% non-functional? Since I first got the phone, checking for updates always results in the window vanishing and nothing happening. My girlfriend's Thunderbolt always pops up a window saying no updates available. Today when the OTA finally rolled out, her phone picked it right up when I checked for updates. My phone still sits there like it's staring at a wall confused. I've done probably ten factory resets since I got the phone and it maintained the same behaviour each time. Is this a hardware issue or am I not clearing something that the factory reset does not get? Not really a dealbreaker as I can update through HBOOT, but annoying to say the least.

I'm having the same issue. Well explained btw.

You are probably in a non-4G area and the problem is due to eHRPD. Revert to revision A and then try to update and see if it is any better.
eHRPD has issues... (though Verizon keeps claiming they've fixed it).
I have the same problem and it happens on 4g too. If I press the check for updates button enough it will tell me network isn't available when it is

Sorry to hear that bro, are you rooted? I did glance at you op again and we were having different results. You said your update search window would disappear, but mine would say network not available. I also apologize for misleading you. I'm not sure if this would be a hardware problem, probably more of a software one. But if you really want to I would just root and get the update from jcase's thread or if that isn't the route you want to take maybe Verizon can help. I know, I know, they normally don't but you never know.

I may just go ahead and root. That way my inability to update would be a "feature" and no longer a bug.

Root is definitely the way to go as long as you've done your homework. If you haven't taken this step before make sure you read through everything and understand what you are doing before proceeding. If you have any problems or questions feel free to pm me.

By doing this, will it wipe my phone or will everything still be intact (like the true ota update)? I still havent received the update and everytime i hit the check new on my phone, the box comes up saying Checking for new Software available now but then quickly just disappears. It seems like it it not fully connecting to servers to check for an update. It has been doing this since day 1 and im getting the feeling I will never receive this update over the air.
A software update will be available for the HTC ThunderBolt beginning at 8 p.m. ET on 07/08/11. Enhancements: Improved data connectivity. Enhanced Call History view. Backup Assistant has been added to the All Ap menu. Preloaded My Verizon, V CAST Music and V CA Videos. Desktop cradle App is now available, showing clock in landscape mode. NY Times site has been added into the browse bookmarks.

READ THIS POST IF YOU HAVEN'T GOTTEN THIS OTA YET! Sense 2.1 I would think. Has anyone captured this OTA? Please run adb logcat before accepting an ota update if you haven't gotten it yet so the devs can capture it. PM me if you need more info on how to do this.
I give this till the morning before I do it, if I don't hear anything bad by then I may give it a go. Don't wanna risk anything like MR1.
Gotta be rooted to do this? I don't mind if someone tells me how.

Short answer - Don't do it. If you are rooted, trying to receive an actual update from HTC or T-Mobile is bad news and could break your phone.
Longer answer:
It's possible to do it, but you would have to do something particular to be able to do it.
Once you root your phone, you forego any future manufacturer updates. Bad news.
There are several threads on this around here, I suggest you read up on them for more information.
Get titanium backup.
Type in filters update.
Freeze updater x x x
Never worry about an update again. You can always defrost if you want too as well.

I just deleted 6 about a week ago. I would be amazed if google, what with previously being fairly public about wanting manufacturers to leave their roms unlocked, would impose a limit per year unless they made a way for those new roms to be detected as the same device...
IMEI? or is there some range of privacy concerns or technical issues related to this?
I heard this news yesterday and tried it out myself, I was able to deactivate 6 devices no problem, so either they switched it back or they haven't changed my account's limit yet, but try to deactivate them now, there's no downside. Either they haven't changed your account yet, or they have and you are using up your four now, as opposed to when you need to.

so for the moment - http://support.google.com/googleplay/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2621412&topic=1663424&ctx=topic
hopefully either they will abandon this strategy (and not make it go the way of google movies) or they'll come up with a very clever way of getting around it.
I personally re-downloaded my entire collection and am back to storing them on my microSD card - less data to use, and no more worrying about activating/deactivating too many devices.

This is a widespread issue among thunderbolt users, but I haven't seen a thread here yet.
I haven't accepted the OTA update from earlier this week, but last night my phone booted with what I assume was a update. Now, any URL can only be directed to the Web browser, not an individual app (for example, Google play links link to the play website, not the app. Same with youtube links). There's not too much out there about it, but from what I've seen, this is due to a new patent lawsuit from apple directed at HTC. Apparently HTC laid down and just removed the function. This is terrible and pretty much ruins the phones functionality.
As of right now the only work around I've heard of is custom roms. Personally I don't have that option as this is a corporate phone. Has anyone heard anything or does anyone have any ideas for a work around? I imagine what would work would be a fake "browser" that you would set as the default and just would reroute to apps, but I certainly don't have the developing know-how to make such a thing.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA
With the HTC One series, there's a new "App Associations" menu that allows you to assign what apps will be used for various link types... is there no equivalent in the new OTA update for the Thunderbolt?
After the update there is that setting in the applications menu under settings
Sent from my HTC Mecha using XDA
This is frustrating.
I updated to the software update and regret it to the fullest extent. Now NO videos of Youtube open in the app. This is a headache.
There is a new "apps association" menu in settings now, under Applications menu. But there is NO option to set YOUTUBE as a default like it used to be with ease.
Anybody here have a way around this??
What I found is using Opera Mini helps this by making it one less step to open videos in the app. But still miss the old direct way.
Help people!!
This is due to the patent judgment against HTC by Apple. The same judgment that recently delayed the release of the One X and the EVO 4G LTE. This feature will be removed in all future HTC releases.

You can't. Apple patented the tech, all they will do is go after a new developer of such an app. Your best bet is to root, run titanium backup, and flash a custom rom that is based on an older Thunderbolt ROM if you want the feature back.

That's not exactly some HTC key/core feature. It's in every Android phone and part of the Android source itself. Even the Galaxy Nexus does it. It's not even a phone specific feature. PCs have done it for years using file://some-local-filesystem-point and using sockets to link apps to other apps. That's all Android does pretty much. Since everyone should be rooted on here (the thunderbolt is painful if you don't), it doesn't affect anyone.
Also I see no source links in your post. Means nothing if you can't link to something verifiable.
