[Q] Has anyone noticed LAG in their MT4G? - myTouch 4G General

I just bought this thing and I love it, but I've noticed it gets VERY laggy sometimes. I don't have very much running, since I just bought it yesterday, but it lags almost as much as my G1 did 2 years ago!
Swiping between homescreens gets very jittery and it just overall feels slow compared to my N1. Anyone else noticing lag and slowdowns or is it just me?

Hmm. I never have noticeable lag on my MT4G. Try doing a factory reset.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App

Nope, much quicker than my vibrant.

Solution: Launcherpro

I don't notice any. Snappiest Android phone I have had to date. And I have had a lot

I noticed the lag as well when comparing with my Vibrant that is stock. Also the MT4G screen doesn't seem to be as responsive as the Vibrant. The webpage scrolling was also jerky as compared to Vibrant. I was all set on getting the MT4g but what I saw yesterday at the store really disappointed me.

How do you stop the initial lag when you wake the phone up. I believe it is due to the opening animation of sense ui. it even happens when i use launcher pro. i know this because in launcher pro i can see the sun animation going off. this causes me to pause before i can do anything on the phone.
example: wake phone up from sleep with the power button.
unlock is ok
say i need to make a call, i press the phone icon but nothing happens if i press it too fast after unlocking the phone. i always have to wait a second.
how do i turn that off so i can operate my phone in stride?

no lag here still waiting on the ota my gf got it and she hit update before i was able to grab it -__-

Is it the weather clock animation that you have to wait for? If so, then remove the clock and re-add it. When you add it back it will ask you if you want animation, just uncheck and it wont do that anymore.

I had LauncherPro on my Nexus and loved it, but with MySense I decided not to use it since Sense has everying I liked about launcher pro built in.
Mine will be extremely fast sometimes and VERY slow sometimes, it's weird. I can't explain the extreme slowdowns. My Nexus felt a lot faster than this one with a slower processor and less RAM. I can only think it's the HTC UI, but I have animations turned off and it's still laggy.

I just ran quadrant and got a score of 1981! This is after the update. This thing is ridiculously fast for me with no lag at all.

hey i noticed the sun animation when i woke up my phone but that was not the htc sense weather thing. it was a weather app i downloaded from the market. i forget what it is called but it had an app on and it did the sun thing everytime i unlocked my screen even when it wasnt there. so i uninstalled it and never had that problem again

i dont have issues with lag but i think the vibrant has the best gpu on the market so that could help it with scrolling pages but my mt4g doesnt get jerky at all when scrolling pages. but also the vibrant gets better fps in quadrant test but the mt4g gets a much higher score stock vs stock.

I also noticed after a full day of use, when I check my battery usage "Android System" is the number 1 use of my battery, almost 50%. I talked on the phone for half an hour, sent 5-6 text messages and looked at 3-4 web pages. The only apps I had running were FriendStream (set to update Facebook only every 4 hours), the clock widget (updating every 3), News (updating every 4 hours), WiFi and Bluetooth on. My Nexus always showed Android System as maybe 15% of my battery with a TON of apps running. It seems like the OS on this phone is doing A LOT in the background that I don't know about...
Maybe that could be the cause of the lag I'm seeing?
Any ideas?

i use a task killer so i have no problem with lag

I noticed the lag too, it was a contrast for the first myTouch 4G I saw but still, it was pretty laggy on my second visit.

well idk but i got an update yesterday ota but not to sure what it did. now my android build says 2.2.1

Yeah I use a task killer too. Helps some, but not a lot.

I've had an Hero, EVO, N1, Vibrant, G2 and now the MT4G. This is the fastest most lag free phone I've used yet. Not that it helps, but I've not seen any lag at all.

I've had the biggest case of lag on mine as well . Turned out phone was defective. Call the store you got it from and see if they issue you a new one. I went to get my new one and experience no lag at all.

Sensation is a huge disappointment from a G2X owner

I picked up a Sensation at Walmart today to compare to the G2X and see what the fuss was all about. First impression was downright disappointing and the more I use it the more I am starting to miss using my G2X.
I'm going to force myself to use the Sensation for at least 2-3 days before I return it because right now I'm longing for my G2X. I really don't get why people are leaving G2X to get Sensation. I have both now and the G2X is night and day a better phone to me.
Things I've noticed so far after only a few hours:
- Sensation takes much longer to boot than G2X - I thought the Sensation had frozen at startup but nope, taking its time
- Worrying most to me - a few times the touchscreen will just stop responding to touches. I have to hit a soft key or something and then it starts working again. Very weird.
- Weirdly slow wifi speeds. I get 2mbps down on my Sensation while I get 30mbps down on the G2X - Same router/AP. No other changes?!?
- Screen resolution on Sensation is excellent for reading text and whatnot BUT it's horrible for color saturation and viewing angles. Just holding a G2X next to it really is quite a drastic difference
- Lag city due to Sense and other overhead. Scrolling homescreen, app drawer, lists, even apps like CNN, etc. is shockingly laggy. I hardly have anything running or widgets and it feels slower than my old Incredible with Sense. Not sure what the hell they did to this phone.
- Sense app replacements for stock apps (sms, email, etc.) are complete resource hogs and not fast like stock android. Takes forever to get things done.
I've installed Launcher Pro and am going to try running it with LP to see if it makes this phone livable. So far it's a big fat suck for me.
Will post more here.

Not a disappointment to this G2X owner. The G2X is ready to go out of the box but the Sensation requires some tweaking. First you need to turn off those silly Sense animations. Then get rid of the 7 pages worth of widgets. Go into the WiFi settings and turn on "Maximum Performance". Lastly, do not let the Sensation automatically install your applications and uncheck back up settings and app data under privacy.
-After the initial boot up, the Sensation actually boots much faster due to HTC's quick boot.
-Never had a problem with the display not responding to my Touches. It's actually miles more responsive than the G2X display since I found myself swiping 3 times to unlock the G2X. I believe you though. Some people have this problem.
-WiFi speeds are just as fast on my Sensation. I get around 20mb/s down and 8mb/s up on both devices. Want to see pics?
-Viewing angles are atrocious on the Sensation and it's contrast is not on the same level as the G2X IPS panel. That being said. Colors on the Sensation are much sharper and vibrant. I think it has better colors but this is more of a preference thing. I can tell you whats not preference and that's the brightness of the Sensations display. When viewing both devices in direct sunlight. The Sensation is a mile better than the G2X.
-The UI is not as responsive as on the G2X but when your in an app I think it's faster than on the G2X. The Sensations browser also loads and scrolls web pages faster. In the end, if you tweak Sense a little bit, there is no more lag but it's still not instant like the G2X.
-The Sense email app doesn't get used since I use Gmail. I never use manufacturer email apps due to the stock Gmail app having true push mail. The Text Message app is just as fast and better looking than the one on the G2X. I use to use Hancent until it lagged on the G2X. I am back to Hancent and it doesn't lag on the Sensation.
Everyone is going to have different experiences just like they do with the G2X. I am not biased by no means since I own both devices until I sell one. I am not in debt to either of the two.
In the end, use what you like. Everyone is going to have a different opinion. If you want to see a unbiased review than check mine out.

Either that or he's telling stories. There is no way in the world the G2X is going to boot faster when the Sensation has quick boot. It boots in 1/3 of the time it takes the G2X.

Sense has that fastboot feature which doesn't really shut down the phone, but rather puts it in a hibernate mode. From a dead start (after pulling the battery) the sensation does take longer to boot than the G2x. I say that from experience after playing with one at the store

When turning off fast boot mine boot within seconds of each other. When fast boot is on it is still rebooting the system and restoring all of your lost memory that apps suck up over the course of use.
I tested browser extensively. G2x won every time...

Is it just me or are applications on the Sensation quicker? It seems like my Sensation will load apps faster and also interact with apps faster. Just wandering if it's just me.
Sensation is slow and laggy. The sensation rom on my mt4g is way smoother, faster and less problems.

just wondering what the benfit of this is? "do not let the Sensation automatically install your applications and uncheck back up settings and app data under privacy."
If its speed, how does this really affect the speed of the UI?

OP I have to say you sound incredibly biased. Not the least bit of objectivity in your post. You illustrate this when you say the difference in the screens is night and day. Anyone who has both (such as myself and jrwingate) will tell you if you sit them side by side there is not very much difference at all. The G2X has better viewing angles but that's about it. But one thing the Sensation does have over the G2X when it comes to the screen is uniform blacks. Since there is NO screen bleeding at all, the blacks are at least uniform..something I cannot say about the G2X. The sense replacements for certain apps such as SMS and email run perfectly fine and without lag. So your assessment is definitely without merit. You spoke about the difference in boot time...from a cold boot, they are almost the same, and when doing a quick boot, the Sensation boots MUCH faster than the G2X. All in all it sounds like either your phone is defective...or you don't really have one. I say that because too much of what you said is off base. Your description is very inaccurate (as you can see from the responses you've received in this thread). The only night and day (as you called it) difference is the difference in stability. The G2X is a good phone don't get me wrong, but until it's a stable device (freezes, random reboots, battery life) it won't stack up against a phone that is stable. I've had the Sensation now for 11 days and it hasn't crashed once. Care to guess how many times my G2X would have froze or random reboot in that same amount of time? lol ...let's just say A LOT. LOL

Side by side, they seem about equal to me. I can't really discern a difference.
Since I posted here is what else has happened:
- Was using the phone and launched Market...froze up, phone shut off wouldn't power back on. Had to pull the battery
- Phone may start fast from a warm boot but 99% of the time I never turn my phone off on purpose so the times I start it up is from a cold boot - in those cases it definitely takes FOREVER to start up compared to the G2X. Try this - the battery out of your Sensation and your G2X (assuming you have both). Now put the batteries back in and turn them on the same time. Done.
- Used Navigation and things were fine then noticed the GPS icon kept flashing and couldn't turn if off so it drained my battery and I had to do a restart (WHICH ALSO takes forever btw!!)
- LauncherPro is helping significantly, the scrolling is smooth and overall it's nice. Higher screen res is messing up some widgets
- Wifi speed is back to normal now for some reason so that's at least a good thing. No issues with data to report yet either thankfully
- My favorite thing about this phone is honestly and sadly the lock screen. Having quick access to apps from there is very nice but that's just software and sure not specific to HTC.
- HTC keyboard is garbage so I replaced with Keyboard from Gingerbread in Market.
So basically, in order for me to use this phone I've removed most of what HTC has on by default. I'm all for tweaking but this further illustrates the crap that skins do to phones. This thing running stock Gingerbread (or even Froyo) would have been quite wonderful.
I'm going to keep tweaking and keep it around for a few more days before I decide but I definitely am still missing the G2X. So far this thing doesn't do anything particularly better for me than the G2X. IMHO.
F THIS - I've decided to uninstall LP and go back to Stock Sense launcher. If I end up with LP, then I might as well use G2X. I'm going to live with this phone with stock Sense launcher so I get the real experience.

You've already decided you don't like it so do yourself a favor and return it. You've already had so many problems...funny the problems you named in here I've seen noone else have..but hey if you say you're having the problems then you're having the problems lol.... I'd still go with what the other people said, if you're really having that much trouble then your phone is definitely defective because the Sensation doesn't most of the issues you named. By the way, the data latency has a fix for it. By the way, just for good measure...I've had the phone since the 8th and have yet to experience a freeze or a crash, and the vast majority of others have had the same experience. Same can't be said for my G2X. But to be honest, the things you say in your post makes me really question the validity of it....just saying...objectivity is non-existent..
Just because I have had tons of problems with the Sensation you question my objectivity but people who post the same crap about the G2X is ok because you've had problems. Wow.
Any case, my Wifi on Sensation just slowed down again since I checked 5 mins ago...looks like I'm not the only one. Fix this for me and I'll avoid throwing this thing back in the box.

[Idea] A small idea to make Android that much better..

Well, as far as I know, this is an original idea I thought of the other day when watching my friend reboot his Iphone. As soon as it loaded up the main screen and he unlocked, it responded and moved as fast as it did if 2 hours after a reboot. That made me think, when i first boot-up my phone, it is laggy, slow, unresponsive because of the media scanner running, but this only happens for about 20-30 seconds at most, but why can't Google just start the media scanning when there's 20 seconds left on the boot animation. I realize this would lengthen the boot animation further, but personally, I'd rather wake to a responsive phone with no lag etc.
Yes? No? Am I just stupid? Opinions please.

I like your idea.
I came from iPhone and have definitely noticed that difference myself. Personally, I think it's worth it, but it would be nice to have ALL of the startup stuff done during startup. My iPhone 4 takes much longer than my SGS2 to actually show the lock screen, but the amount of time until I'm able to use the phone is about the same.
Maybe that's something the devs here could look into building into a ROM. Just have it do everything BEFORE showing the lock screen. Heck, I'd deal with a static boot logo instead of an animation if it would work better.
For me, I like the Android way. I can make calls and send sms while media scanning is in progress.
Ofcourse the initial show off is missing..
What I miss in my galaxy s2 is a reboot option in stock rom..

Hmm, either this issue is rectified in ICS or the Nexus is just blazing fast
I'm using my phone at normal speeds the moment it boots up.
I, believe there is in app in market that allows you to disable the media scanner on startup and refresh it whenever you see fit.

But see the thing is, what I would prefer is that it were to still happen, I just wouldn't mind it at the end of my boot.. even though my boot time is about 3 minutes for some reason

Good idea but that is the way Android works.....
It is a pain in the ass too that you cannot set the alarm and switch off the
phone to save battery in the night. It will never ring to wake you up in the morning.
That's something Google really ought to fix (and therefore won't).

There's something Apple has become really good at in my opinion and it's just that. Making the experience transparent. I'd rather prefer to see smooth transitions everywhere instead of snappy but choppy transitions. They both end up being the same on terms of real usability.

Spot on. Also just the little things they had, like the nice little flowing animation when you open a folder, or even their multitasking. They added multitasking after Android had it, except they made it nicer, smoother etc.

[Q] Lollipop feels unpolished

When I bought my Nexus 5 6 months ago, everything went buttery smooth. Google apps , third party apps, everything. Changing things to ART brought even a better improvement in performance. But after the Google apps recieved material design face-lifts , every thing ran ... sluggish and quite laggy. Moving between app sections was stuttering , scrolling aswell , and every "material design " animation lagged. I truly hope that this will change with the 5.0 update. But my God, I think things started to run worse, especially when I have low battery. No performance improvment , no nothing.
Am I the only one facing this problem? I don't find it normal for the Nexus 5 to act like that. It's just a year old, and when the Nexus 4 got android 4.4.4, it ran like a champ! What happen with the " you can run android now on 512 mb ram ", or the promised "60 FPS animations" ?
I've been running stock today and dev preview for a few weeks. Can't say I've noticed any lag.
Have you tried scrolling in the Google Calendar 5.0 ( schedule mode )

It's not Lollipop. Everything is smooth for me. Even schedule mode in calendar.
Not sure what you are seeing. But its like butter for me. Best update ever. I doubt I'll hardly mod it. At all.

Odd, my n5 is very smooth with lollipop
This is really curious , because my experience is really bad with it, and I don't know if the problem is hardware based ..

If it makes you feel any better, I too notice the lag in Caldender. Just scroll quickly. It has slight chop in the animations. Besides that, and a few other small things it's fairly smooth.

It's not unusable or something like that, but it bothers me , because the animations are not so heavy..and it should run kinda lagless like kitkat.
I really hope google will update the apps and make them smoother.
Lag in calendar, when you scorl up or down. Huge lag, when i play youtube music in backround (Bad App, or Lolipop? I think bad app). Lag is and will be there, if you want to see it. :silly:
Lag everywhere. I flashed 4.4 kitkat and it works perfectly fine. not the same with lollipop wich lags in every bit of the system when it's used more than 10 minutes. really disappointed

Then something went wrong with your install. Otherwise, everyone would be experiencing this.
it's just super weird. it has moments when it works like a champ, but if my battery is lower than 10% and I'm plugged, everything goes ludicrous.
EDIT :
I tried every method, factory images install and manual install, all multiple times.
It's one of google's most unpolished updates. No dedicated gallery app, no face unlock, no new sounds, sluggish google apps etc. I am a big google fan , but I find my self disappointed.
I'm waiting for app updates and wishing for the best.

Does the status bar and nav bar change colors? I don't know if the battery saver mode activates at 10% automatically since I never let my phone get that low. But if it does, it disable all animations and does become less fluid.

You are not alone.
Animations and scrolling are in fact slower in Android 5.0 than in 4.4.4 by a large margin. You must be blind not to notice it.

no, I know that when battery reaches 10% or 15% it slows down the processing power and eliminates animations.

yes, it usually goes "wild" when I have low battery and it's charging, and that means animation lag, 1-2 seconds for the keyboard to open etc. in rest..well it's acceptable, it's not , from my experience , as smooth as kitkat, but it's usable and ok.
Haven't had any lagging issues, in fact this runs smoother then kitkat did, quite happy with the upgrade to be honest. There is always going to be bugs to be worked out, wouldnt be surprised if we see 5.x.x within the next 2 months.
there are 2 camps. the one who say it work ok and the opposite.
I don't think I have flashed it wrong.
It reminds me of the moto 360 problem. Same as now, some said it's choppy, some said that it's fluid and they had no problem
Anyone who says Android 5.0 not laggy is lying, sorry.
Animations must be instant from a perspective of allowing further instant interaction. Let me explain: when something is being animated the resulting screen must allow interaction as soon as you initiate the change in user interface. Right now in Android 5.0, animations are done such a way, you cannot do anything until animation has completed its transformation - and that's called a lag, a perceived delay in user interaction.
Hopefully Google engineers visit these forums and this problem is going to be fixed in future Android 5 releases.

Switched from iPhone but my S6 is SO slow it's driving me crazy

Hi everyone,
I've always used iPhone but we switched to the Galaxy S6 a few weeks ago as I wanted to try android. The phone is fine but man it gets SO slow to the point I can barely use it. I'll be just doing normal things on it, or it will be sitting unused for awhile and I'll press the app switcher button and nothing happens. Wait 3 seconds and then it appears. Pick an app same thing nothing happens, then it appears. Or you swipe and it's laggy and slow. A friend said use clean master which when I run it always says freed 600MB of memory and then the problem seems to go away for another hour or so, but I'm constantly having to do this. My iPhone's were never slow at all and you never had to close programs. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but it's driving me crazy to the point I might return it.
The other issue is lots of times when I swipe to unlock, the phone unlocks but then will be running Spotify or Amazon, neither of which are on my homescreen or were running before. Clean master always says Amazon keeps restarting over and over giving my device a fever, but not sure what I can do about that.
Is there anything I should be doing or could do differently? I'm on the Samsung launcher, was on Google's for awhile but prefer Samsung's since it shows notification count, and I have the Google keyboard as well. It's not all the time, and it's not always debilitating like where it's full on frozen, it's more it just feels really slow. I had the Nexus 5 last year for maybe 2 months before switching back to iPhone but I never had this issue with it. I feel like the S6 is even slower than the Nexus 5 was to the point I'd almost rather use that phone, but I feel like this is ridiculous since I paid $250 for the Nexus 5 and the S6 was $750 so you'd expect it would run better!
Don't know what to tell you but to try a factory reset. I've had my phone for two months now and it's been blazing fast the whole time.

My S6 is damn fast, real you should try factory reset.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ospolice.packagedisablerpro
Buy this app and disable all unused or unwanted things to free up memory. It should help you a lot.
Does it back up all my info when I do that or is it like starting over? Not a huge deal I guess but yeah maybe I'll try it. Like for example sometimes I'll press home to turn on the screen, but I'll I guess accidentally press it twice so it goes to the camera. That's fine, but then I'll press home again, or back, and like nothing happens it just stays on the camera, not frozen like the image is updating live, then a second or two later it will go back to the home screen. Or I'll swipe to unlock on the lock screen, it does the bubble effect and nothing happens. I wait a sec swipe again, does the bubble as well, except it unlocks before I fully finish swiping, as in it was in the process of unlocking and I was just doing it twice.
One quick thing also, do you guys use Clean Master? It seems like it's required as it clears lots of ram and then the phone immediately speeds up. Then I read somewhere that it's better to let the phone manage ram and not this app, but I feel like the phone doesn't do a good job of it, unless having the app installed is preventing the phone from doing it itself? Maybe I'll try without it when I reset it.

Well, that might be a key to solving your problem. Before Reset try first just to uninstall that "garbage" of app. It may solve your problem right away. I had some friends that also have that app installed and also problem with slow phone. Just uninstall of Clean Master solve that.
Let us know what happened.
Well that's the trade off between android and iPhone at the moment probably. iPhone may require less tweaking and trail and testing and how a phone can work.

Clean Master is real good to clean junk files or temp files but for the memory part, plz buy the Package Disabler Pro as this is the only one real works now on S6.
I believe Samsung got PC software to backup your data on Windows.
If you do factory reset and no use then it's safe to guess your phone got hardware problem and you should ask for a replacement.
Question though, where did you buy the phone? Are you 100% sure its an authentic galaxy s6? I came across a similar thing but its with the iPhone, a friend of mine was complaining about having drop calls with his iphone 6, I decided to play around with his iPhone 6 and was wondering why it was hella slow and lags a lot, I use iOS a lot(iPad, iPod Touch, and previous iPhones) and i know it should't lag especially a new version of the iphone, and also noticed somethings are off like the apple logo, screen resoluton, etc. After 2 min, I realized its a fake iPhone6 than runs an iOS skinned android, I was actually amazed how well it was made for a clone. If factory reset didn't help, then it's probably hardware defective or its fake.
Depending how long you've had it can you take it into the shop you got it from, show them the problems and get a replacement?
Mine is pretty much super quick, although I do use Nova Launcher Prime as my launcher, and Tesla Unread to show unread notifications for apps, and it is much quicker than the Samsung Launcher and a lot more customisable.
Also I have noticed some themes can slow the phone down immensely so unless you really want to customise the phone leave it on the default theme. (Nova Launcher Icons and different wallpapers don't slow anything down).
Also the Smart Manager on the phone, helps to keep the recent apps menu working nice and quick as it can slow down to the point that pressing it takes .5 of a second for the recent apps to show up.
Lastly, the S6 is notorious for faulty home buttons, so weird home button behaviour could be a slightly faulty button.

I second that. You can use the following ways to confirm by downloading Antutu Officer from Google Play.

Thanks everyone, it should be authentic I bought it from Rogers directly, not a dealer store but actual corporate one and we bought 2 at the same time. I did a factory reset last night and it's WAY faster now. I didn't put Clean Master on it yet just been using it as is but been great so far. I didn't put all my apps back on, just the ones I use, where as last time I'd just put on everything even if I seldom use it, so will try to add them slowly. CM was always saying before that Amazon was giving my phone a fever, restarting 50 times in the past 15 minutes type thing, even though I use that app constantly. Thanks!

There is something wrong with your software. I have been using my phone for about a month. No issues here.
Yep there is something wrong with your device. I always try to do speed test whenever I gets a chance to have my friend's i6 on my hand. With 250+ apps and 3gigs out of 32 free I can say that s6 opens apps a second faster than i6. There's some scroll lag on chrome but I fixed it with tweaking flags on chrome. If any app lags on this on this device then it's the result of poor coding.

+info? :good:
How is the phone so far?

Phone is laggy, any ideas?

Hey guys, I bought my A9 yesterday, it would be a great phone, but scrolling is laggy. It can even stutter for a bit in Settings, not even mentioning some websites and apps. And multitasking doesn't work at all sometimes. I just went to the phone's settings from a very simple website with no pictures for 10 seconds, and it reloaded. Sometimes it works better.
It must be the optimization right? I'm already running the latest firmware available for my phone, but it was released in, like February. Comparing to my previous SD800 phone, it opens up apps the same time etc, but these two bugs ruin the user experience for me, I don't think that the SoC is that much weaker. Is there a faster, previous firmware to use? I immediately updated after setting up the phone. And since I've read many feedbacks that said there aren't any lags, I thought something is wrong on my side.
Thank you for any suggestions.
Hi man, restart thé phone recover 90% problem
But when I have the same lag, I use "high performance MOD" in devlopper setting for 5 minute and the lag gone.
Thanks, but is this tolerable with a high price phone like this? I mean, it shouldn't act this way. When I use the phone from idle, it opens up things pretty fast, without a lag. But when I'm using it as I should (not killing apps, etc), it goes a bit crazy, even the lock screen animation lags.
my htc A9 speed test.
