I just wanted to say, if your iPhone did it so well, then go back to your iPhone.
So many people that are coming from Apple don't understand the significance of having a phone that is this customizable and open source to boot. One problem with the device and they want to return it to the store.
There will be problems. If you decide to flash a custom ROM to your phone, there will probably be a few more. You surely remember flashing your iPhone with a new ROM for the first time...right?
Oh, that's right, you couldn't.
iPhone users are sure a different breed. So many wants, so little appreciation. (Also, I'm not calling out EVERY iPhone user on the planet, you all know who you are)
The Captivate is a really, really, nice phone. I don't look at the OS on the phone as something Samsung has anything to do with either, which a lot of people seem to do around these forums.
I purchased this phone, because I have wanted a phone that natively runs Android. I have had Android running on my old HTC kaiser(which is 1000% better than Windows Mobile and keeps the phone current), and my HTC Rhodium. The passion and dedication of Android developers and the willingness of Android adopters to help in any way they can is amazing.
Anyways, I will wait for new ROMs to be released for this phone, and I will be happy with the fact that there will be ROMs for this phone, that it has a stunning display, and that most if not all the shortcomings of the phone will be short lived by the persistently dedicated developers out there. The hardware is great, the OS is great, and will get better over time.
Now, AT&T where is my 4g...

I agree 100%! I also had a mini rant regarding everyone looking at their antenna and TRYING to lose bars. Just use the damn phone. If you drop a call, that is a problem. Until then, enjoy it!

This thread is great! This OS will evolve and it will change to what the users want and what doesn't get built in the OS most likely will be filled with an app or customized ROMs. I came from an iPhone 3G. I skipped the 3GS upgrade because I wasn't convinced Apple would make significant strides. With this upgrade, I could have went with iPhone 4. Its a nice looking device but I don't want to be shackled by their restrictions. Over a 2 year period they added what...a front facing camera, multitasking and folders??? GIVE ME A BREAK.
you said that perfectly and you know how some people switched from iphone 4 to this and they complain about no flash well all the other iphones didn't have flash either just to put it out there
I am going to wait and skip this phone. Within a few months they will come out with a 1024 x 760 or whatever the new Gingerbread resolution is.... Then I will sell my iPhone 4 and jump back into the fun world of flashing ROM's. That is the only thing I miss about all of my old windows Mobile device..... OH and I did miss the xda-developers for the few years I was away

I feel proud to have bought the fastest android device presently and i can live with some imperfections (in fact i love working my way around if i cant figure out things.) Dont you guys think that it makes you learn more stuff.

This thread is entirely unnecessary and as bad as iPhone owners complaining about the Captivate. I for one have seen almost no threads where someone was saying their iPhone was better and the Captivate couldn't do something. Don't piss off the Captivate community, because a LARGE number of people in the Captivate community seem to be coming from iPhones because this is the first decent Android phone that AT&T has offered. So far I've heard almost nothing but mature conversations between iPhone and Captivate owners until this one. Just a few people coming from iPhones or thinking about coming from an iPhone and wanting to know what the Android OS is capable of and if it will do everything they want so they can decide if they want to swap.

what you say makes sense. But my opinion was tied to the comments i hear from my friends who use iPhones.. so nothing against ppl participating in this community.
definitely have to agree with dewt on this, why? I'm the most anti-iPhone person I know, but I came from WinMo (see sig) and you know what, I love this phone. Sure there are a ton of features missing right now, but that's RIGHT NOW. I know it's gonna get bigger and better, so why complain about things? You know what you should be doing instead of whinning about features that aren't on the phone.... going through posts, searching the internet, asking around and finding out HOW to get them on the phone like I have been! I loved being able to view my Excel docs, so I found a way to have them sync'd online directly from my desktop PC with Offisync, then view them with the Google Docs app.... wow, so difficult....
Bottom line, if you're gonna complain, first think about the fact that you may be complaining for no reason if there is an app, setting, or work-around available. Next, take the iPhone out of your @$$, sit down for once, and relax!!!
Just to clarify, this post does not only extend to people on this forum. All of the iPhone users that I know personally would not even entertain the idea of switching to another phone. Laugh at it really. Even when presented with facts.

I'll tell you what though. Being a user of both, the Android fanboys are MUCH worse than the iPhone fanboys now. In the past couple of months the Android fanboys have gotten incredibly obnoxious, and it's posts like this, in our own message board, where you still have to try and tell iPhone users how stupid they are that do it. Why don't you just grow up and let people choose what they like and be done. There's no reason that any iPhone user needs to entertain the idea of switching. If they are happy, then good for them, leave them alone. Trust me, I like the customizability of Android quite a bit, that's why I have an Android phone now that AT&T has one worth buying. A lot of people don't give a damn if you can root your phone and make it install apps that the iPhone doesn't have. These topics aren't necessary and only make it worse.

You are missing the point ... i think both me and dewt are referring to iPhone users (friends) who try to argue tht iPhones are better than Android phones.
You havto agree tht Android is a competitor for iPhone and now when Android market is growing bigger, the iPhone users (3G , 3GS and 4) are always trying to condescend on the android users which should not be the case!

I think you are actually missing the point. He was saying that while there have been conversations pointing out improvements that can be made based on iPhone user experience (GPS anyone?), no one here is arguing the iPhone is superior. Posts like dewts just make you look as rabid, ignorant, and uncompromising as the iPhone users you hate.

I have seen a few users complain very harshly and unfairly compare this phone and the captivate. They like the iPhone so much they can't even see the good side of android.

I am a captivate owner and I have nothing to complain about.
The line above is a single sentence summary of this post. If you have no interest in the opinions of others or prefer to complain about a developers hard work then you should probably stop reading now.
After the countless hours I have spent in the Samsung Captivate section I am beginning to feel there is a growing void in the area of captivate compliments. It's as if people are angered by Samsung's apparent failure to achieve perfection. A post of positivity or satisfaction with our magical devices only seems to appear amidst the rampant firings of Iphone vs Captivate battles fanboy raids.
I do not intend to claim that Samsung has achieved perfection. Through the development and production of this device we can see that some apparent flaws have been made, HOWEVER!, these flaws are not attached to every captivate experience. After initially reading through this forum I would assume I have been blessed by the phone gods for providing me with the only fully functional captivate produced. After digging for some time though, it can be seen that there are a few who have had an awesome and intended experience with this phone. I never had a problem with GPS or Battery and I couldn't even complain about lag.
Rom after rom, my opinion has grown more positive. Through research and understanding I have learned how to make my device work more effectively for me. I have learned that most errors and malfunctions are simply user error or misinformation. A good and verified Master Clear can work wonders for a properly flashed phone's performance.
To the developers out there gilding the lily daily. You are awesome! Always should you receive an error log, but never should you hear a complaint.
I will end this with some things that have been making me smile since captivate release:
1. SAMOLED
2. Speed
3. Multitasking like a MoFo (Last.FM + My Tracks + HD video recording, simultaneously)
Updating with more smile factors:
4. Sleek sturdy hardware design
5. Phone sound quality and reception
6. Device/screen size
7. 3D acceleration
+1 to this. I too love my phone, it is a learnign curve and we have so many wonderful developers working hard to make out phones better. I agree that a little bit of learning goes a long way, most of the complaints I read and problems that are experienced are caused by over enthusiastic new owners that do not go through the proper steps for clean flashing and often have bugs do to this. Too many people improperly installing ROMS, not knowing the difference between Recovery and Download mode. Mostly due to not reading enough and following the clearly outlines steps. We all make mistakes and have all been noobs, no device is perfect and I know I had to spend two weeks of constant reading to know how to properly flash my phone, use adb, and various other usefull tools. I am constantly learning about Android and the Captivate, I am happy with my device and my current setup. These aren't I-phones thank god and you have to spend time to set it up the way it works for you, depending on individual needs and preference.
I also thing we have a wonderful comunity and need to work together to make it a pleasent atmosphere for all. I am truly enjoying my phone and appreciate the hard work the developers put into this.
The compaining gets tiresome, but with a little patience and learning these are really great Android phones. If you want something to work with no need to tweek and hack then Android id probably not the device for you, imo.

I feel the same right now about mine. Everyone that has watched any of the hd movies I have loaded says the same...WOW...OMG...that looks awesome..
Does the endless complaining and *****ing do any good..Yes..it does..and while you are quite right in saying this is a great phone..please don't try to silence those who do complain about theirs..they have every right to do so,provided what they are saying is truthfull.
I know many have a hardon for Samsung because of the GPS issue..and also the 3-button recovery fiasco..and people should be made aware of them prior to buying so they can do as I did and get one that works..but..with out all of those B&M'ng threads I most likely would have not known about it..so IMHO they do serve a purpose.
On the good side..I love how fast this phone is,and how great it works..I'll be (hopefully ) even happy when 2.2 or Gingerbread is released..I do recommend them to my friends wanting to get one..and let them know to come here and sign up so they too can learn all about them and all of the great developers work on all of the phones ..This is a great place..with lots of good people working hard to make things even better for us..

I do not intend to silence those with complaints about their device or experiences. I myself have listed my concerns with the device here on XDA. It is a crucial part of how our community gains understanding and shares information. I just think the overwhelming count of negative to positive posts can be frightening to a newcomer or perspective android convert. I don't want to silence the negative but encourage the positive.
The above being said, some refrain should be practiced when posting to a developers thread. I am no developer but I think some people have a tendency to be more critical than helpful when complaining about freely developed and distributed software.

I absolutely love this phone. The GPS is abysmal, the Facebook app is in severe need of an update and the lack of convenient stable visual voicemail, but beyond that the phone is awesome.
I love swype and the amount of apps and I seem to be constantly blown away by the screen. Also, the battery life is great compared to my 3g.
I was skeptical at first but I'm glad I dove in.
Well.. I do not have this phone.. But, I actually 100% understand what you mean..
The best example I can think of is a PC.
When you buy a pc, what is the first thing most (even remotely knowledgable) users do with it?
Install a few programs. I always use ccleaner, to get clear out extra files, you delete the "extra" programs you don't want (if you didn't build the pc yourself). You make quite a few changes as soon as you get it.
If your going to get a phone.. and really want to get the most out of it.. your going to have to mod it.. That means Jailbreaking it on iphone, Rooting it on android and voiding your warranty eveywhere.
If your squeamish about voiding your warranty and just want a phone for email/internet browsing.. The iphone 4 is a great choice and you are welcome to use it, Actually so is blackberry, Symbian, and a slew of other phone's.
The truth is complaints shouldn't be addressed to the phone.. but, more the respective manufacturers and carriers that prevent rooting and void your warranty for doing so.
If you know what your buying, I can't feel bad when you come back and complain... If you don't know what your buying, I can't feel bad for you at all.. Why? if your going to get the most out of *ANYTHING* in life your going to have to know what your getting into and be fully aware of your actions.. Those who aren't, I can't pity.
With that said.. I'm not saying people shouldn't strive to push manufacturers to fix problems, and being able to read warnings is nice before you buy something.. My biggest problem when I read complaints is, people don't feel the need to warn, express this dislike or try to address their problems..
They want to just run in cry, whine, and then blast the phone as if it killed their children, ate their dog and laughed in their face.
if I could persuade my parents to cover the data plan.. (not happening, they wouldn't even let me pay for it).. Then I'd spring for capt full cash right now..

People ask me about my phone(captivate), and if they should get an iphone or captivate. Simple answer, if your a simple person, and don't like customizing or if your not really tech savvy, then get an iphone. But if you're the complete opposite, then go with an android (this is of course not involving jail breaking)

They have every right to complain, sure. But does that mean we have to be audience to these continually barrages of people who don't realize they have the choice to get rid of the phone if it doesn't suit them? I understand that we can have concerns, but if they're not handled constructively (ie varying, gps, lag, battery) they're cries should fall on deaf ears because I frankly don't need to hear it. Its been rehashed too many times to merit new threads and is far from necessary.
I come to this forum to get help with minor issues or improvement of my phone which is one I already love over my old 9700. That is why I love reading these kinds of threads where someone instead of injecting negativity into the community is seeking to shine a positive light. So here's to threads that offer help or new ways to improve the experience. Thanks OP glad you're enjoying your phone!

Most people are pleasant and inviting in person then go to the internet to become complete troll nobs. I prefer to be an a repulsive ass in person and make people on the internet believe I am a nice and well adjusted individual. This process makes life more spontaneous and brings a since of humor to Online Dating.
In truth though, it is an engine reference for a "1984 Harley Davidson Shovelhead".
I love my phone. I love it more now that i have angry birds. Would like inter-op words with friends, but there are alternatives. I do wish the "issue" that people complain about gets fixed, but it doesn't bother me. I would barely use it anyway. To much like a leash to me. Did I mention I love my phone.

That was the best laugh I've had all day!
I love my captivate. I admit to being a bit obsessed with it. I had GPS issues, but that was the ONLY thing I didn't like about the phone. I was hesitant to exchange it because I didn't want to end up with a different set of problems, but I did exchange it.
Now I love my Captivate AND I have a working GPS I use every day

Coming from a jailbroken iPhone 3g, there is no comparison. This is my 1st Android phone and couldn't be happier with it. I've only had it about a month and i've learned a lot, mainly by reading these forums...hence why this is only my 4th post

Well, welcome to XDA and to your new mobile experience. Back in my WinMo days I spents weeks reading the Kaiser forums before my first few posts. All the new acronyms and software references can be a bit daunting, even for the savviest of geeks. Luckily I made a smooth transfer by running android ports on my winmo device before fully jumping in.

The annoying stab by the general uninformed public is an assumption that "Droid" is the correct term to reference all android devices. I blame Verizon and their conniving marketing department. The failed recognition of your device by a passing stranger does give you an opportunity to politely correct them with a showing of the wondrous features your technologically superior device is capable of.
So... I'm winding down from my day, drinking a couple beers and checking XDA for anything I've missed throughout the day. Keep in mind this is my first Android, coming from crapberry... I know it hasn't been out long and there are issues with ril(which I don't know anything about)... I feel like some of the things I have found here I really like have slowed down, if not stopped. Before I get flamed, I understand there is a tremendous amount of work that goes into every Rom and theme we see. I just hope to see that at some point, this phone gets to the point we all hope it will. I'm trying to learn as much as I can and help anyone with questions my limited Android knowledge can accomplish. Feel free to use this thread to vent and rant... Let's get it all out here. Many thanks to the devs still holding strong... I'm just looking for thoughts on how far the development will go with this phoned compared to the EVO's I'm compared to everyday at work.
3 things to keep in mind:
1) CM7 is damn near stable and they're working hard on it. That said, [nearly] everybody who isn't working on CM7 is essentially waiting on the CM7 team to finish since [nearly] everybody wants an AOSP-based ROM. So why would they keep pouring tons of time into their current ROMs since they'll very soon be thrown away?
2) Google I/O. Quite a few of our favorite devs are being distracted by either attending or closely following this event.
3) End of the school year. A lot of our favorite devs are either high school or college students. And many of those who aren't have children. As such, this is a rough time of year for them.
Look at all of this and you shouldn't be all that surprised that things have slowed down for a bit. But I promise you, the TBolt will be one of the main platforms that people will be hacking for a while. We'll have CM7, we'll have MIUI, and we'll have many other custom ROMs and kernels. Just be patient while they get the RIL stable. This is the FIRST phone that has supported LTE and this is also the first phone (that I'm aware of) that has supported eHRPD - there are definitely some lessons that need to be learned, and that takes time.

A good amount of stuff has came out with the RIL still not completed, once the RIL is completed, the flood gates will open and you will see a large amount of ROMs made.

Hey now... Pork sword fights are saved for after work. Haha. Not comparing to the EVO, just stating that its been out much longer and had more dev time.

I'm in the same boat as you. I loved my BB Bold dearly. So easy to pimp them girls on it. Just the simplicity of the keyboard, being able to connect with other people.
However now being on my first android, i felt that I made the switch at the right time.
With BlackBerry I felt i could write a good email and msg friends all day, but I could never ever use the browser or attempt to download anything because it really was useless.
Tbolt on the other hand, I was able to do everything that i couldn't do on my blackberry, Msging still sucks on the Tbolt, But it is way way better then trying to browse on a blackberry.
With that said, there is still something i miss about the blackberry, but honestly i couldn't be happier.
One more thing, When i first got into android i was completely loss. I have no idea what to do. It was hours and hours of mindless surfing on many different android websites. Hours of reading on root and roms.
Anyhow Android is the future. Long live Google!!!
I see it like this: the Thunderbolt is still an infant--it eats, sleeps, cries, pukes, and poops. When it gets more mature, it can crawl, walk, talk, and more! It just needs some TLC and patience!
It hasn't even been 2 months. It took a whole month if not more I believe to root the Incredible if I remember correctly. Learn some patience people.
You can't compare this phone to the EVO, the EVO has been out for almost a year now.
I gotta agree with the OP.
Development seems to be at a stand still. I understand most developers are waiting for the ril to be completed. But, while we're waiting other phones will be released and developers will start to look towards that phone for development support. I think we'll be left behind. And it really does seem like only 2 developers are working on getting the ril, but when the G2 was rooted it seemed like all of team douche was working to get the ASOP ROM up and running. With the Thunderbolt it's more like team Slayer. Progress was made quickly with the G2 and other devices. Quickly even with team douche building for all devices at once.
I'm not slapping other developers in the face. I'm currently running adrynalyne build, and I like. Great battery life. But I want the speed and stability other devices have with CM7. I really do appreciate the having the support we currently have. And I've donated to the developers of my choice in support of their work.
Coming from the OG Droid, I noticed that many ROMs are based on CM. So we WILL see many more roms.
I can assure you we will get 2.3.4 sometime in the future especially since HTC "promised" that we'll get some kind of 2.3 version. 3.1 was announced at Google I/O, but that probably won't happen until mid next year for us (if we are lucky).
This is the first Verizon 4g phone. The ril is brand new to all. The phone will take off when the ril is polished and released.

While I don't have a Thunderbolt and I'm still rocking an OG Droid, I do believe I can say something about this.
I suspect that a lot of people share in these sentiments, myself included. But I believe the reason why is because so many people were amazed at the community that developed after the Droid 1 was released. The Motorola Droid really revolutionized the Android ecosystem. With Android 2.0, Android changed big-time. The Droid (and Android 2.0) was leaps and bounds over anything that had predated it in the Android world, and there was all sorts of development options that opened up with the creation of that new phone.
Unfortunately, I believe that the days of new findings and developments like in the days and weeks in November and December '09 are gone for good, and won't be matched by anything in the near future in the Android world. New phones will come and go, the Thunderbolt included. There will be big-time phones (again, like the Thunderbolt) that people will naturally be attracted to, and those will be the centers of development for the community for a good period of time. But I don't believe you will ever again see a surge in development like you saw for the Motorola Droid.
There is definitely still plenty of development going on in a community like this. It just doesn't seem like as much as there was in the Android community in the past, and it definitely wasn't as much. But I don't think we can ever match those numbers again, so don't let that comparison get you down.

I fully agree with what you said. So far there has been some really good to great stuff but I feel personally this is only the beginning of what potential lies within what could be done with ROMs on the Thunderbolt. I can't wait for the RIL to be finished.
I got my OG Droid in Nov. 09 and I personally do not think ROM development was the golden age like you are so fondly remembering. Verizon's first android phone brought a lot of new people to android. It still took quite awhile for community to evolve.
People seem spoiled now ... TB is new tech, we need to give it time. The Devs are bringing out some very Nice sense based ROMs and AOSP will follow... give it time.
"Is dinner ready yet?!" No. "Is it ready yet?!" No. "How about now?!" No. *shoe to the head* "Ow! What the hell was that for?!"
You get the picture. This is exactly what you guys are doing here but it won't be a shoe that you'll get to the side of your head, you'll have pushed a good developer or two away and then you'll really be crying.
Btw, first paragraph is a true story. Actually happened to me a few times.

So how, exactly, do you expect other LTE devices to leave us left behind? EVERY SINGLE Verizon LTE device will build upon what is done for the RIL with the Thunderbolt. If anything, add'l LTE devices coming will actually HELP the Thunderbolt community! At some point, yeah, we'll move past the Thunderbolt. But that won't be until multi-core phones blow single-core phones away. And we're not close to there yet. Perhaps Ice Cream Sandwich will make that a reality (we hope) and that's still 7(?) months away!
I'll throw my two cents on the at&t jelly bean update.
As some of you can see, I've been on these forums for a VERY long time. I've seen the forums go from basically an HTC win-mo board to the amazing place it has become today. Sadly, it seems like people seem to come here to whine more then to either innovate or at least take control of their devices.
Yes it's frustrating that AT&T hasn't released the jelly bean update for our device considering the update has been out for nearly 5 months now. But at the same time, this is XD-freaking-A! Where if you want anything on your device (short of Google wallet apparently), you cane make it happen. Root your phone, unlock your bootloader, and enjoy your phone as you want to.
I remember when people wouldn't bat an eye to dropping $600-$800 on a HTC TyTn II and it would come with 850/1900 HSPA so you didn't have to get stuck with ATT's crap and terrible support.
Lets get back to enjoying our device, and if that means going the Nexus device and/or unlocked device route, so be it. Don't let the carriers control you.

Funny, I was just thinking along similar lines today. This board has changed a whole lot in the time I've been here. I also joined during the WinMo days, back with the TyTn II (AT&T Tilt). In those days, folks with smartphones were mostly early adopters. Sure, XDA existed long before that time, and there were even earlier adopters, by far. But back in 2007, smartphones and especially moddiing them were the realm of tech geeks only.
The smartphone world has now exploded and become mainstream. The demographic of people that visit this site is now very different. Lots of n00bs asking for one-click root solutions and video tutorials, instead of just reading and doing. A lot more n00bs asking the same questions over and over, without bothering to do any research. And asking for help without providing any background information. I remember the days when nobody would even help you, if you didn't have your carrier, phone version, firmware version, and radio listed in your signature.
So my specific peeve is a bit different (less about the whining, and more about users not wanting to learn and research). But the basic premise is the same: the user base here has changed a whole lot over time.
Hmm I'm not sure I follow Ya about people whining , we get sometimes a bunch of people who don't follow instructions or read any previous posts but it seems its just the normal new user issues until they get broke in. The hoxl community in my opinion is the best group around in xda. With s off and our awesome choices in many android based versions it seems any update from carriers would be a severe downgrade and at this point serves us no purpose. I guess to make long story short I'm not really sure what the point of this thread is ( no offense meant)

Think this board's bad? should have seen the hp touchpad section right before it died. There's a new thread/post asking for someone to port win7 and win8 almost every day, and it's never going to happen lol.
Back in the day people who bought smartphones were geeks and tech heads, plus this site was mainly HTC devices WinMo devices. Now almost everyone has a smartphone so you get a lot of annoying people on here.
Ha! As bad as this place can get with noobishness, the iOS jailbreak community is worse because the barriers to entry are a lot lower. Pretty much everything is one-click once the exploits are found, and there's no division by handset like there is with Android. Bricking is next to impossible because you can easily recover and go back to stock through iTunes.
I haven't been at xda all that long, but I was into jailbreaking from when the 3G was released, which was mid-2008. Back then, it was only hardcore geeks and most people didn't even realize jailbreaking existed or had only the vaguest understanding of what it was. When I came over the divide last year, it had gotten so bad people thought you could jailbreak over wifi because iTunes does most things over wifi now. You would go through ten posts trying to help someone only to discover they didn't even have their iPhone plugged into their freaking computer. Plus you would have people showing up for the express purpose of arguing that you shouldn't jailbreak and that all of us were going to jail.

The only thing I ever seen her do with it is look up celebrities net worth on google now :laugh:. I have never understood why would there be anyone here waiting for AT&T to release their JB Sense ROM when we have had it here for over 2 months. I'm here because I want to get the absolute best out of my phone that the purely stock experience cannot match.

Everyone and their mom has a smartphone, but not everyone and their mom comes here and talks about flashing ROMs. I expect stupidity in the forums as a whole from outsiders who just come here from a Google search, but people in the ROM threads are just as lazy and entitled. ROM threads are nearly impossible to keep up with because they're 1000 pages long and 980 of those pages are repeat questions. I'm new here so maybe that's the way it's always been but it's frustrating to say the least. If I don't come here for one day, I have 30 pages to catch up with on the single ROM I actually follow.
When I first bought my phone a good six months ago, coming from 3gs, All I did was troll up until now. The first thing I found was the thread to unlock, supercid and , root my phone, for att 2.20. I found two threads that would do it, the all-one-tool kit, and the x-factor exploit. I decided to go with the x-factor instead of the all in one because i wouldn't learn anything with the tool-kit. After that I ran into the problem of no rom, recovery, and an un-mountable sdcard. I did a quick search about the un-mountable sdcard in our forums here and found the Team Nocturnal SD Fix for evita. Once that was done i had a working sd card, trwp recovery but still no rom. So i did another search and found one of the best informational posts ever, Gunnyman's quick and dirty adb/fastboot primer this got me on track to start pushing rom zips to my sdcard without having a bootable rom and also told me that i had to fastboot flash boot boot.img every time I installed a new rom hboot 1.14+. And I still haven't had to ask any question on how to do something because guaranteed 100% that someone else has asked that very same question you just have to read and read some more, the only way someone hasn't asked your question is if you've been doing your own mod work that nobody else has seen.
I'm nowhere near as active as I used to be. Cooking your own winmo roms was fun in those days. But that was in College and at att when I actually had time to learn that stuff. Generally if you follow instructions to a T, you will be fine.

That's really interesting. I always assumed kids growing up these days (God I sound old) would be friggin' wizards of technology having grown up with it since birth. But maybe the opposite is true : where my first computer required a lot of WORK to do anything with (custom boot disks to run DOOM and whatnot), nowadays everything just "works" so kids will be proficient on the basics but absolutely clueless on anything beyond that because they never HAD to do it...?

As the father of three school-age boys, I can tell you that in some ways, not a whole lot has changed. The baseline has moved, but the divisions are the same. Everyone has a phone and a computer, but there are still big differences in how much they care about them.
The average kids (the same crowd who wouldn't touch a computer when I was their age) are uninterested in the guts and only know the basics of how to use them. And there is still the geek crowd who wants to know everything and play around with it.

I feel like I'm getting old, watching everyone around me. I'm a senior in college now, getting a bachelor's degree in telecommunications & systems administration. You'd be suprised to hear that most of my classmates know relatively little about computers, especially at a lower level. Hell, one of my friends who just scored a great job at target corperate IT didn't know what a CSV file was until I scolded him yesterday. Kids these days are stupid.

I guess I get not knowing the innards /lower level stuff, but you'd think general USAGE would at least be second nature by now.
It's like with cars. Almost everyone knows how to drive and uses a car daily, but only a small percentage can fix them or understand how they work.
Most people, young and old, don't know/don't care about how computers and phones work.
Glad I didn't yet sell my S4, because I believe the Verizon S5 is soon to be the most returned phone in Android history.
While Verizon/Samung/Android didn't "actively" mislead anyone about the capabilities of this phone, they clearly allowed people to believe things to the contrary, and it royally pisses me off.

You're being a bit dramatic...this phone will get some returns being so locked down, but the number of us that care about root is small, less than 3% I would bet. This will be the best selling Android phone of the year for any carrier most likely.
1) Fingerprint scanner can be greatly improved if you scan the sides of your fingers as well.
2) Agreed and explanation would be nice, but on the other hand they could be trying to avoid a lot of people using this and unknowingly eating up all their data allotment. Consumers have come to understand that being on your wifi doesn't use your data, so if they enabled this feature, they would be using their data while on wifi as well, many without understanding. Then lots of people get overages and get upset with the carriers, causing a headache and more bad PR.
3) Agree again, but Google is asking OEM's to do this with KitKat, it's not unique to Samsung.
4) Rooting/ROMing is not even close to being what Android is "ALL ABOUT", but it's a nice perk with most phones.
5) Okay
This phone will likely get root at some point, but who knows for sure. Luckily, there's other great options to pick from as well.

Your forgot the fact the 98% of S5 users don't care about those facts, you are a minority. I am glad you didn't buy an S5 so we don't have to hear you whine about what we already know. Those that bought in know what we are getting into, coming from a former S4 user w/ Root. If we don't get root, that will suck, but I will be just fine, the less I tinker with my phone, the more I enjoy other things in life.
I have a great idea for you, go to TMobile, they will pay your ETF and get your dream phone.

Guys, cut him ssome slack. I'm sure each and every one of you has *****ed about buying a 600$ phone and not being able to modify it at some point.
I was able to successfully obtain f-off on the Galaxy S5.

Then go to the M8 forums, we don't care about your thoughts on the S5 and why you bought the M8. I'm not in the One forum posting that it is a POS and why I didn't buy the One. I went to buy the One on launch day but chickened out because the camera sucks and the bezel is huge and it is too tall. But that is my choice, I'm not ****ting on everyone else's who bought the One by telling them that in their forums. We know this phone will not be cracked and who cares, works fine as it. I just want root for tether and debloat.

Eh, people just need to reinforce their decision to go for prettyness over functionality. But we all cannot be teenage girls. And yes, sometimes the most popular device is actually the best.
I think this whole "rebel against popularity" stems from the battle between iOS and Android. Unfortunately Samsung is being seen as the new Apple in the android environment when clearly the provider, in this case VZW, is the oppressor.

No, I doubt most of us have. Apart from it being an old argument that accomplishes NOTHING, it also is pretty naive to buy a phone THINKING that people who VOLUNTEER and work on donations would spend time to find an exploit, as if this is owed or expected. The sense of entitlement for people who believe this is ridiculous.
S5 does have root, does have custom boot loader, and already has roms. It is VERIZON that has your phone locked.
I'm sorry to say it, but I jumped over to T MOBILE and they paid my ETF fee....up to $350...
$50 A month unlimited, instead of $90 or so, plus additional line too. ...
So far I'm happy with the switch though.

2. I wish I was so naive that no explanation, would be considered an explanation.
3. You do know that "My Files" is not a third party app, right????? I understand that most of these issues would be a non-issue with root access, but please oh wise one, explain how this apparent increased root difficulty is peculiarly carrier-specific?
4. No one in the history of the world has ever said "I'm going to get an Android so I can have relevant ads." At least one person has said, "I want to customize the **** out of my phone, therefore, Android."
5. Thank you, I had no idea that there was information about this phone anywhere other than XDA. Perhaps in my quest, I may find this elusive information about the Verizon S5 fingerprint scanner usable with Paypal you speak of.
6. I do NOT feel "entitled" to root. I understand that what you call "volunteering" isn't also about NOT getting paid, which is why I have no problem supporting the awesome efforts of root/recovery/rom/app developers. I DO feel entitled to features advertised to be available in a product, and if/when those features are deliberately disabled, I DO feel entitled to an explanation. Unless you can provide explanations instead of a cult-like defense reserved for Apple Forums, please limit your responses to the tools that may kiss you ass elsewhere.
This is no different than if a car company was to release a model of vehicle with a set of unique features, only to have the dealership remove them, and not bother to tell anyone about it. Then when you realize that those features are missing, and take to a forum (typically) full of enlightened people with explanations and solutions, you instead receive rhetoric like "Stop *****ing about the car not having heated seats(albeit not a unique feature), it has a steering wheel, doesn't it you ungrateful prick?"

Thanks for your input, I am seriously weighing my options, I've been checking out the T-Mobile S5 forums, and see a lot of interesting things going on over there. I haven't been under contract with Verizon for years, and frankly, coverage is the only thing that's preventing me from leaving, and they unfortunately have no competition in that regard. Still considering throwing my grandfathered unlimited data plans on ebay, and exchanging coverage for capability.

Same boat. I have piece of mind, that wherever I go I have service with Verizon. Although tmobile has great service where I live in Atlanta, I've also traveled north and south and felt so cheap and angry having a phone with a G and edge icon for data majority of the time. I mean it's 2014 for crying out loud. LOL! Also the fact my family lives in West Virginia where there's no tmobile service and it roams on att at the worst capped speeds. At that point I promise to not let Verizon go because it has a stellar LTE icon at least 90% of the way. Once I get back to Atlanta, I say, well I have great coverage where I live, costs is cheaper, and mainly bootloaders are unlocked with tmobile. Once I travel on the road again it's the same cycle of me back pedaling leaving Verizon because they're hands down the most reliable, I have a 20% discount, and unlimited data. I'm tempted to suspend my service with Verizon and only reconnect when I travel until tmobile gets there coverage wise. Since I've been off contract forever I can suspend my line for at least half the year without being billed. I feel ridiculous going through this as an adult because I like to flash ROMS. Help me? LOL!

This is hands-down the funniest post I've ever read on XDA. I agree, after my Note 3, I'm all done with Samsung devices permanently. They don't care about their customers at all. They've been most unhelpful after I've exhausted every channel of support imaginable looking for a solution. I wish Motorola would make a high-end device again, which I bet they are. Regardless, don't get too excited about the S5 getting unlocked. I've been working with another S4 developer for about 6 months now, and while we've got a great understanding of what's going on, there's not much we can do. We're still working, but don't get this device expecting custom ROMs and kernels. Root is realistic though, and I'd imagine it'll be here soon
Remember that you have 14 days after renewal of contract or purchase of the device to bring it back and tell those red trolls that you can't root this bad boy.
